What scares me the most are as follows: Social isolation and being vulnerable in the process of creating community. A fear of being taken advantage of particularly from a fiscal standpoint as I would be identified as a “foreigner.”
Visit the lower KwaZulu-Natal south coast when you get a chance. Stay in Manaba Beach in Margate 😊 Edit: I’m originally from KZN and I moved back here after a few years in Joburg. I wear shorts and t shirts every day and can sea the ocean from inside my apartment. I can also walk to the beach and the water is still warm enough to swim in winter.

The dryness is more of a JHB thing rather than a South African thing. Visit the coast to take a break from the dryness 😅 The dryness was too much for me too when I moved to JHB from KwaZulu Natal. Even my natural 4C hair was brittle in JHB and needed way more moisturising.
Lol I suffered moving to Pretoria from cape town. And when I returned to cape town I couldn't be more happier to breath fresh breathable air .I even missed the winter rain and the wind. But I will miss the thunderstorms and beautiful skies over there
JHB is best for businesses. Capetown is for tourist business and attractions and is really cold and windy like SF. Durban has more warm tropical weather. Even the ocean is warmer. I’m still exploring Durban though to see what it’s best for. But JHB is a happy medium. Just visit the surrounding provinces or countries around when the weather changes if need be.
I'm sorry ashley , This is the coldest weather we have had in the last 5 years. South Africa has 9months of warm weather and 3 months of cold weather. Petoria is the warmest city in Gauteng or the West Rand of JHB is warmer. Provinces that are not too cold during winter are Limpopo, Northwest and Durban. This is the most coldest we have been, and the damn Loadshedding is back .

Hey there Ashley, I too do not like this winter cold. However, it will soon be over. Next month when you will notice the winds, that is nature showing us that the season is about to change and the cold will go. I moved to ZA in 1981 when it was not a good time and I could not get to understanding any logic around apartheid. However, I just knew that change will happen and I wanted to be a part of the change. I am so glad I stayed and by 1994 I had become a ZA citizen. The rest is history as they say. People always make the mistake of assuming its Africa so therefore it must be hot all year round. Tourists are always shocked when they visit and its cold. I am Cape Townian and since I can remember it snows almost every year on the mountain and its snows in Ceres and Matroosberg (1.5 hour drive from Cape Town) almost every year.

As someone deep in my mid life, I have only experienced snow in Joburg twice. I didn’t get any snow in my neighbourhood like other areas did , it’s definitely not a common occurrence. But I agree with you about the dry skin. Winter happens to be my favourite season in Joburg, and for nice moist, plump skin during this season I highly recommend using 3 drops of castor oil on each side of your face. Massage in gently all over, including over eyelids, it’s a treat for your skin, and even your hair. The healing properties of organic, hexane-free castor oil are also well known.
And the weather differ from province to province, which I found weird since a young South African, I am from North West, I come to Gauteng I feel cold but if I go visit makulu in limpopo there a dramatic change in weather.
Am from the carribean, lived in new york. And walking in snow wearing heavy coat etc was litterly terrifying experience, atvthe age of 15 but i learned to adapt quickly and cry to my mom to go back to my sunshine country ,so don't be discouraged, you're a strong black woman .😊
Yep it's cold in South Africa which was shocking to me since I thought it was a warm weather place year around . I'm here on a work assignment in Pretoria but originally from New Orleans . We dont experience snow here even though we are 45 mins apart . Despite load shedding which was the biggest adjustment, I love my time here thus far.

You can't control what nature does. When winter season comes along stay indoors more. No matter where you go within a country the will be an unpleasant day or terrible weather at some point. Something in you chose Joburg so just take it all in the will be better experiences.
I grew up in a career military family. We would live across the world in many different climate zones. Cultural and racial challenges. I am so grateful for all of those experiences now as an adult. Its okay to have your own preferences in people, places, and climates.
Thanks Ashley for your honesty and balanced assessment of the whole situation. South African weather patterns can be very stressful sometimes even to us South Africans. This winter season came with sickness in my whole household…something we never experienced especially my 6 years old daughter who hardly get sick. We recovered then, this cold front during this week brought down temperatures even to lower levels than before. It gets even more chilly at night, and we actually pulled my 6 years old daughter out of the crèche this week. Please, soldier on my sister, you are a very strong, gentle and loving person with lots of positivity, joy and grace. We really love AFRICAN AMERICANS and very honoured to have them living with us and among us as one of our ‘own’. We love you guys, plz don’t give up due to this cold or any other situation. South Africa, though a beautiful loving country do have some strange things such as this new phenomenon of trucks burning. These things are foreign to South Africans just as much as it is to people watching this on TV and social media. In the midst of kind, beautiful, friendly and ever nice South Africans, there are some strange characters living in our midst….truck burning characters including xenophobic ones are very strange to our ears even to us as South Africans. Please stay with us and journey with us in this new path post 1994, things are getting better and will continually getting better. The new chaps dealing with loadshedding challenges seems to be gradually providing solutions to this challenge. We have been through white oppression from 1652 until 1994 and we will continually improve and conquer all our challenges. Yeah the reason African Americans are seen as family is because we grew up watching and liking the same things as you guys. So it’s easier to have a conversation with a South African as and African American, than any other African. Plus we both experienced White Supremacy at its worst, there’s just a huge element of relatability. Plus we believe that you guys are the coolest black people in the world, the lingo, the swag, the attitude…etc.

Believe you me you will get used to it and prepare for it better next year. I lived in Tanzania, it was too hot and too humid for me, fortunately i returned to SA in 1994 with all the exiles. I could not take that all year round heat. Johannesburg has a mild and bearable weather but sometimes it is influenced by the cold fronts from the west coast. But generally, the winter lasts for three months at most, thereafter you have 9 months of perfect weather. Just visit a pharmacy and get professional advice on good skin products to use during winter. There are many good skin products for different skin types in SA.
Born and grew up in Cape Town, got married, live in JBG, and love both cities and the whole country, I'm saying, sister Ashley welcome to SA and smarter move to pick JBG , I know what I'm talking about. JBG has four seasons. Two seasons prepares you for the transition to harsher seasons. After summer which is hot to mild for a period of three months , come a season called Autumn , which is warm and slightly cold. Autumn is from March to May and is preparing you to colder and harshest Winter season. that is. June to August. The worst season in all provinces of SA . Then from June to August is the harshness weather that you have recently experienced. The last transaction is in September to November called Springs , where change clicks on. Very nice weather where everything comes to life eg vegetation get green, trees growing leaves, fruit trees blooming flowers birds returning from hiding and people filling streets and malls, and braai spot getting busier again. All that come to life and all is well again until rain season announced itself, which is the part of the very Summer, HOT and RAINY , I mean raaiiiin that start in mid September to June. Then December to March ie is summer. Gauteng has more rain in SA until winter starts in June. Maybe that's why we never lack water even when they say preserve it in case we might struggle with at some point, but water mhmm uhm , not Gauteng, not in that sense. It's true that JBG is the best in everything and is good for business. People are warmer, friendlier much welcoming and entertaining. Freedom that's JBG. Good choice sister and welcome to Gauteng province and stay well we've got your back. Remember Johannesburg is the most developed, most populated , and most diverse to a point there will be some crime spot here and there at some areas like any most populated country, but not all of it . Many good places to choose like Rosebank or Fourway for example. It's up to you to choose, JBG for stay and Cape Town for summer holidays maybe. Ghebera city the most warm, friendliest people and very beautiful city and it's warmer right through the year. The city names are , friendly city, windy city and beautiful people of Xhosa nation. Visit it one day you'll see real culture / tradition, history, religion and their beliefs. But warm hearted nation. We love you stay well ❤😊
Luckily, SA winter is really short. By August the Jhb weather will be warmer. For now, probably getting a gas heater (due to loadshedding) may help for now.
I heard Durban has more tropical weather. Try visiting there to get a break from the cold, but I love that South Africa has many different types of weather in each of its provinces.
I moved from ATL back to Florida because of the cold there. I was used to the tropical weather and the cold would mess up my mental, no matter how much I attempted to prepare for the winters.
This winter they’re having there isn’t they’re usual winter weather. Especially the snow. It’s a new phenomenon. I’ve experienced every season in JHB and SA as a whole and even in the winter the weather was nice when I was experienced it in 2021. I’ll send you pics on IG. It will get better in a few weeks. It's great to have cold weather so that you can truly enjoy spring. I do feel for you since you're from the south here in the states. My advice is to visit Durban for its tropical weather, especially during school break. Joburg is the vibe for me, the good and the bad.
I understand how you feel. My move was from NYC to Alabama, to be near my family. I absolutely hate Alabama. It was like slamming into a brickwall when it came to the difference in culture, diversity, intellect, etc. I moved back to NYC in 2.5 years bc I was unwilling to dumb myself down and stuff down everything I learned in nyc about myself about life and about how to hustle and survive mentally and physcially. I knew it wasn't just a season of unhappiness, i HATED Alabama. At first I felt trapped and I felt like I needed to plan my escape. The alabama city planners purposefully keep Alabamians as ignorant as possible by not allowing national or international convention or music festivals to come to the state, just Alabama football. The atmosphere in Montgomery, the capital, was like the 1600s. I have ptsd from that experience. I still go visit my family, but I don't stay long.
same from California to Florida. I lasted 5 years and ran out of there asap. the type of racism that is integral to that culture - I Hated it. Just couldn't accept it. But moving from USA to Nigeria was Perfect for me on so many levels. I love almost everything especially being Free from Racism.

Johannesburg does not have snow people were so excited as they were seeing the snow for the first time in Joburg including myself as old as I am. Maybe another thing would be assess seasons and plan your life around it. Visiting and staying in a place are 2 different things. Life has seasons hope you make a wise decision that will benefit you take time also.
I am South African and I live in Canada. Winter in South Africa is a walk in a park compared to Canada. I have been in Canada over 20 years and some days I HATE CANADA with a passion. But then some days I try to look at the positives. Despite the challenges in SA, there is no place like Mzansi❤
Cape Town is pretty cold in winter too! With the added factor that winter is the rainy season here. So it is often cold, rainy and stormy during the winter months. A general issue in SA is that homes are not build to deal with cold weather (there must be some historical reason for this!). Perhaps Durban would be closer to what you expect from a more tropical climate.
Most of the prewar houses/apartments in Cape Town are built with fireplaces or built-in electric heaters. Newer houses are built with the idea that the owners would heat their own homes using store bought appliances as needed.

I coming mid August toward the end of winter. Hopefully by that time the weather will reach 70 degrees that not too bad. Having problems how to dress should I bring winter clothing or some shorts. I doing both. If I need to I will buy extra stuff, when I get there. I thinking about the long flight but I will managed.

I’ve been living in Zambia for nearly a year and a half. it’s a huge culture change moving from the richest country in world, to the African continent where every country has 50 to 60% poverty. In Zambia I live in a nice house, smack in the middle of unfinished houses that are made of cement block, maybe a tin roof (usually a makeshift roof) and windowless holes in the walls. Countless people live this way. The average person in Zambia makes less than two dollars a day. The government is socialistic, and those who have jobs work for the Government making $300 a month if they are lucky and most making $150 a month. The roads are dirt roads with huge potholes except for the capital Lusaka which has decent roads but many huge potholes. Driving on these roads is challenging because most people don’t drive and everybody else walks on the sides of the roads cutting across the roads whenever they see fit, making it very dangerous for the person who has a car. It’s very dusty and smoky in South African countries as they burn their trash and their fields during the dry season and The wind sends the dust from the unpaved roads into the air mixing it with the smoke. These are just two examples of the culture change you will be experiencing. It took me over a year to get used to the changes, still there is many things I tolerate and will never get used to here in Zambia. There’s much I miss about America. It was the greatest place to live in the world until the left-wing Democrats took control of American culture around 2000. The racism and their woke ism, ruined everything ideologically dividing the country. Thats why I left.
Ashley, well we hv winter in SA but this year its really too cold. The last time we had snow in Jhb was in 2012. It comes once in a while. You just need to check the weather and prepare yourself. In Cape town there's more rain in winter and cold and in summer it's windy and the weather changes 3 times a day so unpredictable. I think Gauteng generally has a stable weather. It can be cold in winter while its sumny.
I'm in Egypt and I love it. The weather changes too but the winter I loved. I'm not a fan of too hot, but the AC is on, and I go out at night when it is cooler. The overall vibe is good. I'm at home, days I forget I am in Africa. Just doing my thing enjoying life.
If Joburg was miserable for you, then stay away from the Free State and the Northern Cape. 😅😅They dial the notch up in cold weather and dryness. You’ll go several days in a row at a subzero temperature and humidity hovering around the 40s. Best place to be in South Africa during winter is Durban, the humidity is perfect and the weather is warm and tropical.

We are from the US but moved to South America 9 years ago and can relate to everything you are saying 💯. Especially when it comes to the whether....I had to become accustom to 6 months of blazing heat and 6 months of rain.

You think Joburg's air is dry, come to Windhoek, Namibia and you'll experience zero humidity 😅. Keep hydrated and moisturize more often and you should be fine. Adapt and have fun.
HI Ashley, sorry I only saw this a bit late winter is almost over but if circumstance permits you next time or next winter try to move to eastern part of the country Mpumalanga. The winter is not that harsh that side only when there are cold front. It still a bit dry but not as harsh as extremly cold places

Yeah. Johannesburg and Cape Town gets really cold in winter. I am in the North West and I usually don't go to Johannesburg or Cape Town in winter because it's very cold.
Hello Ms.Ashley, I'm living outside of Mombasa Kenya, the beauty of the country, and people is awesome, it's a challenge at times but the peace is worth all of these challenges.
Here the winter is generally cold, Joburg is not even the coldest place SA. Central heating is more of a concept in the northern hemisphere where the Winter is not only colder but longer as well. Here Winter season is relatively short, people just put up with it, without investing in other forms of central heating. Central heating options here involve installing air conditioners or underfloor heating (under the floor tiles or carpet). These options, however, use electrical energy and are not an option for many people. Load shedding reduces heating options even further. Gas and Paraffin are other heating options that people use to keep warm, Paraffin heaters are used mostly by lower income households where electricity and gas costs are unaffordable or unsustainable. In Europe (not sure about USA) they traditionally use hot water radiators in the house areas- which is linked to the house gyser/ water boiler. This option is not available here as far as I know. When Spring comes in late August or in September, everyone feels good again for the next 9 months. The areas in the East Coast experience higher minimum teperatures. This includes Durban, wild coast areas, all the way to East London and possibly Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province. This is, however, only true for the coastal towns only as the sea (Indian Ocean) influences the local temperatures in these places - in varying degrees.
Joburg is not the coldest. I am originally from the Free State. As a result of the Free State being centrally located province it is the coldest. I don't visit home during winter months as temperatures sometimes go up to -6°Celsius.
I could be wrong but watching your videos from TZ and comparing it to your videos in South Africa. You seem more relax in TZ but I'm glad you address it. It's ok to take breaks from your host country when there certain seasons.
I’ll take a Joburg winter over this heat dome humidity in Houston any day of the week. Weather can impact people’s mood, it’s seasonal you’ll be okay. People here in the states especially here in Texas, down south and the southwest are literally dying and being rushed to the hospital because the heat is too much. And this is a region that’s use to hot weather. So yeah give me that dry winter

This is not typical winter for Johannesburg. Snow and these freezing temperatures are not usual. The past decade or more the winters have been quite mild. The mornings and evenings are chilly but the middle of the day is gorgeous. Johannesburg has the best weather in the world come spring, summer and autumn. So hang in there.
I think the issue is African Americans don't want to admit to themselves they are more American than they want to be.Not to mention the violent crime rate in SA is off the hook.
Glad im currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the US, & the 1st yr at my current house we had no heating and it was winter and Wisconsin winters are no joke. So i have experience with the cold!!!

Just like the Chinese and Italians, please do open American restaurants which will serve your home traditional menus, it would be a great way of creating jobs and growing our economy And do bring your African American friends who have the natural skills for hair salons and barbershops to teach our local natives,
Winter in JHB can be brutal on your skin and hair. You have to wear a thick body cream like eucerin to cope with the dry skin and we live in our winter gowns when at home to keep warm 😅 but summertime is my favourite in JHB once the season changes the mood in the air changes, summertime is a vibe everyday in South Africa
I have lived in Johannesburg for over 20 years & love everything about this city! But the Joburg Winter really breaks me down😢. Now that am financially independent, I move out of Joburg in winter & come back Spring time!🎉
I lived in Los Angeles for 13 years then moved to Maryland where I hate the cold weather. I arrange to travel and be away during winter months. Sometimes I go back to California for two months during winter and in the coming years, I'll spend the winter months overseas in Africa.
South African winters are rough, especially in Johannesburg. Perhaps South Africa isn’t for you, if so that’s also ok. I myself happily moved from Jhb to Pta having lived in Jhb all my life. Don’t feel bad. Jhb is a strange city, things will change in time.
Does it really snow in Joburg, never heard about that. I lived in Zambia and left about 10 years ago. I was a frequent visitor to Joburg and never experienced any snow in winter. Has global warming brought snow to Joburg. I know it snows a bit in the southern parts of South Africa especially the Cape province. Please update me on the Joburg snow. I currently live in Canada and it's 100% snow here in winter, no exceptions.
Hot steam humidifier can assist with both keeping dry air moist while simultaneously warning the place. Humidifier also assist to minimise sinus problems and glaucoma. We use it a lot here at home.though it consumes a little bit of electricity

For me moving from one country to another or from one city to another has become clear that it is a matter of trade offs, there is no place that is all good or one place that is all bad, each place is a mix bag of these things and you have to make trade offs.
When I moved from California to Las Vegas it was adjustment getting use to the heat. Lived there for 11 years. Then in 2019 I moved to Louisiana. I still haven’t excepted this weather! I hate the humidity and rain. Also my allergies are not good here either. Can’t wait to leave this state. 😂
@@PlutoniumSol Nope. Which is why not everyone should relocate to a foreign country. Sometimes people who can't adapt do relocate, but then it quickly becomes evident that they are incapable of adapting, and that likely should have stayed home.

S.A is very cold in winter but we cannot control the nature,here in Johannesburg we had some flakes of the Snow but Eastern Cape it was Snowing you must also travel to other provinces

The dryness is more of a JHB thing rather than a South African thing. Visit the coast to take a break from the dryness 😅 The dryness was too much for me too when I moved to JHB from KwaZulu Natal. Even my natural 4C hair was brittle in JHB and needed way more moisturising.

JHB is best for businesses. Capetown is for tourist business and attractions and is really cold and windy like SF. Durban has more warm tropical weather. Even the ocean is warmer. I’m still exploring Durban though to see what it’s best for. But JHB is a happy medium. Just visit the surrounding provinces or countries around when the weather changes if need be.
I'm sorry ashley , This is the coldest weather we have had in the last 5 years. South Africa has 9months of warm weather and 3 months of cold weather. Petoria is the warmest city in Gauteng or the West Rand of JHB is warmer. Provinces that are not too cold during winter are Limpopo, Northwest and Durban. This is the most coldest we have been, and the damn Loadshedding is back .

Hey there Ashley, I too do not like this winter cold. However, it will soon be over. Next month when you will notice the winds, that is nature showing us that the season is about to change and the cold will go. I moved to ZA in 1981 when it was not a good time and I could not get to understanding any logic around apartheid. However, I just knew that change will happen and I wanted to be a part of the change. I am so glad I stayed and by 1994 I had become a ZA citizen. The rest is history as they say. People always make the mistake of assuming its Africa so therefore it must be hot all year round. Tourists are always shocked when they visit and its cold. I am Cape Townian and since I can remember it snows almost every year on the mountain and its snows in Ceres and Matroosberg (1.5 hour drive from Cape Town) almost every year.

As someone deep in my mid life, I have only experienced snow in Joburg twice. I didn’t get any snow in my neighbourhood like other areas did , it’s definitely not a common occurrence. But I agree with you about the dry skin. Winter happens to be my favourite season in Joburg, and for nice moist, plump skin during this season I highly recommend using 3 drops of castor oil on each side of your face. Massage in gently all over, including over eyelids, it’s a treat for your skin, and even your hair. The healing properties of organic, hexane-free castor oil are also well known.

Yep it's cold in South Africa which was shocking to me since I thought it was a warm weather place year around . I'm here on a work assignment in Pretoria but originally from New Orleans . We dont experience snow here even though we are 45 mins apart . Despite load shedding which was the biggest adjustment, I love my time here thus far.

You can't control what nature does. When winter season comes along stay indoors more. No matter where you go within a country the will be an unpleasant day or terrible weather at some point. Something in you chose Joburg so just take it all in the will be better experiences.

I grew up in a career military family. We would live across the world in many different climate zones. Cultural and racial challenges. I am so grateful for all of those experiences now as an adult. Its okay to have your own preferences in people, places, and climates.

Thanks Ashley for your honesty and balanced assessment of the whole situation. South African weather patterns can be very stressful sometimes even to us South Africans. This winter season came with sickness in my whole household…something we never experienced especially my 6 years old daughter who hardly get sick. We recovered then, this cold front during this week brought down temperatures even to lower levels than before. It gets even more chilly at night, and we actually pulled my 6 years old daughter out of the crèche this week. Please, soldier on my sister, you are a very strong, gentle and loving person with lots of positivity, joy and grace. We really love AFRICAN AMERICANS and very honoured to have them living with us and among us as one of our ‘own’. We love you guys, plz don’t give up due to this cold or any other situation. South Africa, though a beautiful loving country do have some strange things such as this new phenomenon of trucks burning. These things are foreign to South Africans just as much as it is to people watching this on TV and social media. In the midst of kind, beautiful, friendly and ever nice South Africans, there are some strange characters living in our midst….truck burning characters including xenophobic ones are very strange to our ears even to us as South Africans. Please stay with us and journey with us in this new path post 1994, things are getting better and will continually getting better. The new chaps dealing with loadshedding challenges seems to be gradually providing solutions to this challenge. We have been through white oppression from 1652 until 1994 and we will continually improve and conquer all our challenges. Believe you me you will get used to it and prepare for it better next year. I lived in Tanzania, it was too hot and too humid for me, fortunately i returned to SA in 1994 with all the exiles. I could not take that all year round heat. Johannesburg has a mild and bearable weather but sometimes it is influenced by the cold fronts from the west coast. But generally, the winter lasts for three months at most, thereafter you have 9 months of perfect weather. Just visit a pharmacy and get professional advice on good skin products to use during winter. There are many good skin products for different skin types in SA.
Nairobi has good weather year round .

Born and grew up in Cape Town, got married, live in JBG, and love both cities and the whole country, I'm saying, sister Ashley welcome to SA and smarter move to pick JBG , I know what I'm talking about.
JBG has four seasons. Two seasons prepares you for the transition to harsher seasons.
After summer which is hot to mild for a period of three months , come a season called Autumn , which is warm and slightly cold. Autumn is from March to May and is preparing you to colder and harshest Winter season. that is. June to August. The worst season in all provinces of SA . Then from June to August is the harshness weather that you have recently experienced.
The last transaction is in September to November called Springs , where change clicks on. Very nice weather where everything comes to life eg vegetation get green, trees growing leaves, fruit trees blooming flowers birds returning from hiding and people filling streets and malls, and braai spot getting busier again.
All that come to life and all is well again until rain season announced itself, which is the part of the very Summer, HOT and RAINY , I mean raaiiiin that start in mid September to June.
Then December to March ie is summer. Gauteng has more rain in SA until winter starts in June. Maybe that's why we never lack water even when they say preserve it in case we might struggle with at some point, but water mhmm uhm , not Gauteng, not in that sense.
It's true that JBG is the best in everything and is good for business. People are warmer, friendlier much welcoming and entertaining. Freedom that's JBG.

Remember Johannesburg is the most developed, most populated , and most diverse to a point there will be some crime spot here and there at some areas like any most populated country, but not all of it . Luckily, SA winter is really short. By August the Jhb weather will be warmer. For now, probably getting a gas heater (due to loadshedding) may help for now.
I heard Durban has more tropical weather. Try visiting there to get a break from the cold, but I love that South Africa has many different types of weather in each of its provinces.

My advice is to visit Durban for its tropical weather, especially during school break. Joburg is the vibe for me, the good and the bad.

I understand how you feel. My move was from NYC to Alabama, to be near my family. I absolutely hate Alabama. It was like slamming into a brickwall when it came to the difference in culture, diversity, intellect, etc. I moved back to NYC in 2.5 years bc I was unwilling to dumb myself down and stuff down everything I learned in nyc about myself about life and about how to hustle and survive mentally and physcially. I knew it wasn't just a season of unhappiness, i HATED Alabama. At first I felt trapped and I felt like I needed to plan my escape. The alabama city planners purposefully keep Alabamians as ignorant as possible by not allowing national or international convention or music festivals to come to the state, just Alabama football. The atmosphere in Montgomery, the capital, was like the 1600s. I have ptsd from that experience. I still go visit my family, but I don't stay long.

Maybe another thing would be assess seasons and plan your life around it. Visiting and staying in a place are 2 different things. Cape Town is pretty cold in winter too! With the added factor that winter is the rainy season here. So it is often cold, rainy and stormy during the winter months. A general issue in SA is that homes are not build to deal with cold weather (there must be some historical reason for this!). Perhaps Durban would be closer to what you expect from a more tropical climate.
Most of the prewar houses/apartments in Cape Town are built with fireplaces or built-in electric heaters. Newer houses are built with the idea that the owners would heat their own homes using store bought appliances as needed.

I coming mid August toward the end of winter. Hopefully by that time the weather will reach 70 degrees that not too bad. Having problems how to dress should I bring winter clothing or some shorts. I’ve been living in Zambia for nearly a year and a half. it’s a huge culture change moving from the richest country in world, to the African continent where every country has 50 to 60% poverty. In Zambia I live in a nice house, smack in the middle of unfinished houses that are made of cement block, maybe a tin roof (usually a makeshift roof) and windowless holes in the walls. Countless people live this way. The average person in Zambia makes less than two dollars a day. The government is socialistic, and those who have jobs work for the Government making $300 a month if they are lucky and most making $150 a month. The roads are dirt roads with huge potholes except for the capital Lusaka which has decent roads but many huge potholes. Driving on these roads is challenging because most people don’t drive and everybody else walks on the sides of the roads cutting across the roads whenever they see fit, making it very dangerous for the person who has a car. It’s very dusty and smoky in South African countries as they burn their trash and their fields during the dry season and The wind sends the dust from the unpaved roads into the air mixing it with the smoke. These are just two examples of the culture change you will be experiencing. It took me over a year to get used to the changes, still there is many things I tolerate and will never get used to here in Zambia. There’s much I miss about America. It was the greatest place to live in the world until the left-wing Democrats took control of American culture around 2000. The racism and their woke ism, ruined everything ideologically dividing the country. Thats why I left.

Ashley, well we hv winter in SA but this year its really too cold. The last time we had snow in Jhb was in 2012. It comes once in a while. You just need to check the weather and prepare yourself. In Cape town there's more rain in winter and cold and in summer it's windy and the weather changes 3 times a day so unpredictable. I think Gauteng generally has a stable weather. It can be cold in winter while its sumny.

If Joburg was miserable for you, then stay away from the Free State and the Northern Cape. 😅😅They dial the notch up in cold weather and dryness. You’ll go several days in a row at a subzero temperature and humidity hovering around the 40s.
Best place to be in South Africa during winter is Durban, the humidity is perfect and the weather is warm and tropical.

Especially when it comes to the whether....I had to become accustom to 6 months of blazing heat and 6 months of rain.

The winter is not that harsh that side only when there are cold front. It still a bit dry but not as harsh as extremly cold places

Yeah. Johannesburg and Cape Town gets really cold in winter. I am in the North West and I usually don't go to Johannesburg or Cape Town in winter because it's very cold.
Hello Ms.Ashley, I'm living outside of Mombasa Kenya, the beauty of the country, and people is awesome, it's a challenge at times but the peace is worth all of these challenges.
Here the winter is generally cold, Joburg is not even the coldest place SA. Central heating is more of a concept in the northern hemisphere where the Winter is not only colder but longer as well. Here Winter season is relatively short, people just put up with it, without investing in other forms of central heating. Central heating options here involve installing air conditioners or underfloor heating (under the floor tiles or carpet). These options, however, use electrical energy and are not an option for many people. Load shedding reduces heating options even further. Gas and Paraffin are other heating options that people use to keep warm, Paraffin heaters are used mostly by lower income households where electricity and gas costs are unaffordable or unsustainable. In Europe (not sure about USA) they traditionally use hot water radiators in the house areas- which is linked to the house gyser/ water boiler. This option is not available here as far as I know. When Spring comes in late August or in September, everyone feels good again for the next 9 months. The areas in the East Coast experience higher minimum teperatures. This includes Durban, wild coast areas, all the way to East London and possibly Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province. This is, however, only true for the coastal towns only as the sea (Indian Ocean) influences the local temperatures in these places - in varying degrees.

Joburg is not the coldest. I am originally from the Free State. As a result of the Free State being centrally located province it is the coldest. I don't visit home during winter months as temperatures sometimes go up to -6°Celsius.
I could be wrong but watching your videos from TZ and comparing it to your videos in South Africa. You seem more relax in TZ but I'm glad you address it. It's ok to take breaks from your host country when there certain seasons.

I’ll take a Joburg winter over this heat dome humidity in Houston any day of the week. Weather can impact people’s mood, it’s seasonal you’ll be okay.
People here in the states especially here in Texas, down south and the southwest are literally dying and being rushed to the hospital because the heat is too much. And this is a region that’s use to hot weather. So yeah give me that dry winter

This is not typical winter for Johannesburg. Snow and these freezing temperatures are not usual. The past decade or more the winters have been quite mild. The mornings and evenings are chilly but the middle of the day is gorgeous.
Johannesburg has the best weather in the world come spring, summer and autumn.
So hang in there.

I think the issue is African Americans don't want to admit to themselves they are more American than they want to be.Not to mention the violent crime rate in SA is off the hook.
Glad im currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the US, & the 1st yr at my current house we had no heating and it was winter and Wisconsin winters are no joke. So i have experience with the cold!!!

Facts: Africa is not everyone.
Winter in JHB can be brutal on your skin and hair. You have to wear a thick body cream like eucerin to cope with the dry skin and we live in our winter gowns when at home to keep warm 😅 but summertime is my favourite in JHB once the season changes the mood in the air changes, summertime is a vibe everyday in South Africa

I have lived in Johannesburg for over 20 years & love everything about this city! But the Joburg Winter really breaks me down😢. Now that am financially independent, I move out of Joburg in winter & come back Spring time!🎉

I lived in Los Angeles for 13 years then moved to Maryland where I hate the cold weather. I arrange to travel and be away during winter months. Sometimes I go back to California for two months during winter and in the coming years, I'll spend the winter months overseas in Africa.

South African winters are rough, especially in Johannesburg. Perhaps South Africa isn’t for you, if so that’s also ok. I myself happily moved from Jhb to Pta having lived in Jhb all my life. Don’t feel bad. Jhb is a strange city, things will change in time.
I love a good fireplace during cold months, but the dryness can be challenging.
You learn to be content within yourself. And come to the realization there going to be challenges everywhere you go.

Does it really snow in Joburg, never heard about that. I lived in Zambia and left about 10 years ago. I was a frequent visitor to Joburg and never experienced any snow in winter. Has global warming brought snow to Joburg. I know it snows a bit in the southern parts of South Africa especially the Cape province. Please update me on the Joburg snow. I currently live in Canada and it's 100% snow here in winter, no exceptions.
Hot steam humidifier can assist with both keeping dry air moist while simultaneously warning the place. Humidifier also assist to minimise sinus problems and glaucoma. We use it a lot here at home.though it consumes a little bit of electricity
If you dont love the coldness CPT is the last place you wanna be rather Durban.
FACTS!! Durban is the ONLY place in SA that's warm year round. Anyplace else you'd better have a SPOUSE in your bed ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

For me moving from one country to another or from one city to another has become clear that it is a matter of trade offs, there is no place that is all good or one place that is all bad, each place is a mix bag of these things and you have to make trade offs.
I noticed that a Safari Guide was dressed in a turtleneck, puffer, and knit cap as I viewed sightings from hot humid NYC.
When I moved from California to Las Vegas it was adjustment getting use to the heat. Lived there for 11 years. Then in 2019 I moved to Louisiana. I still haven’t excepted this weather! I hate the humidity and rain. Also my allergies are not good here either. Can’t wait to leave this state. 😂
Woohooh! California and Louisiana are totally different climates, I’m sure it’s taking a toll to adjust to the heat in LA especially this summer

One adapts. When Africans move to Europe, USA or Canada, they also find the winters harsh and the summers are often unremarkable. They adapt. 🤷🏾♀️

@@PlutoniumSol Nope. Which is why not everyone should relocate to a foreign country. Sometimes people who can't adapt do relocate, but then it quickly becomes evident that they are incapable of adapting, and that likely should have stayed home.
Cape Town weather is good and its cold in winter but bearable
Im African American but I have severe mental health issues from social media and bullying. I am in student debt and would like to save up to move to South Africa

S.A is very cold in winter but we cannot control the nature,here in Johannesburg we had some flakes of the Snow but Eastern Cape it was Snowing you must also travel to other provinces
