I rode the M3s for many years. They have a much better ride than the M7s and M9s. The M3 seats are a bit wider and they don't rock as much. Glad to see them back in service.
Do you think that Port Washington will be serving those old LIRR trains during the rush hours as well to Penn Station? Anyway, good video. I myself as a LIRR commuter since 1998.
They’re coming back and staying temporarily for ESA….let’s goooo! Miss these M3s so much. It will be sad when they get replaced by the rest of the M9s but that’s life and the M9s will greatly improve reliability. With that being said, enjoy the M3s while you still can!
@@qolspony Listen carefully They still have 32 M2s still around because they are paseting them just in case if anything goes wrong with the M8S . I'm just letting you know now . However the M4/6s M1s for the long island Rail Road or gone and the M1AS on the Metro North is gone.
New Jersey guy here, but that means for me the M3s (and M1s for that matter) are an essential part of the scenery in Penn Station, ideally seen through the side window of one of the cabs in the middle of an Arrow III train following a windy ride through the tunnel. Cool to see them back.
I’m in 11th grade I remember the m3 when I was a kid and didn’t get to ride it now that’s it’s finally back I have a chance to experience this old gold
For now it’ll run on the mainline I assume but after ESA opens they will mostly be on the Atlantic branch. Not to mention after ESA opens the Atlantic branch will become a shuttle line permanently

What ever many M9S they have running do to a delays they will have mix equipments. That's what we are definitely gonna be seeing M3S M7s M9S.
Definitely not a retrofit... They were delivered with those windows and as a matter of fact that was one of a couple of cosmetic differences from the M1's that would help me quickly identify them as M3's... I also rode them when they were brand new back in 1985...
@@banksrail yeah but they changed that design for it to fit mainly lirr m7/m9, I guess maybe for the grand central line to be fully electric and with newer trains?
They’re both technically the same. The only differences are different third rail contact shoes (since MNR uses a different style of third rail) M3As have the refurbished interior while LIRR M3s retain their original interior from the 80s and lastly, MNR M3As only have one headlight on the top while LIRR M3s have 2
There’s currently one set in service right now, which apparently runs the most during PM Rush Hours (3-6) on any given LIRR branch. (Not sure if I’m correct, I got this from sources)
Usually it's so the railroad doesn't make the mistake of retiring them prematurely. They will keep equipment around until they are 100% sure they will not need them ever again. The first few months or years after anything is retired, they are stored and traffic levels monitored to see if they would need them at all until the next batch of new equipment arrives.
I use to be a metro north rider back in the 1980s and could remember a similar car m1/2. They closely resemble the R44/46s. But they are a better built!
As much as I love the M3’s. The LIRR shouldn’t have had to bring them back into service. The pandemic delayed the delivery of many of the new M9’s because of the supply chain issues. But I’m definitely counting down the days until Grand Central Madison opens it’s doors!! Three months to go!!
2:33 Lovin’ that beautiful Leslie RS2M Horn!

Was on a M7 today… the screech is retarded
The M3s kinda smell bad; especially the bathroom cars. But if it works it works I guess
@@bababooey5059 You are so right. I remember they always seem to have plumbing issues from the time they were new. Stunk enough to make me gag.
Long island almost as a whole, don't keep their transportation clean, Suffolk county, and Nassau county bus in bad condition
I love them but I thought they did rock more
I'll never stop loving the M3s just love them
I grew up along the Metro North Hudson Line when everything was on the M3s. Seeing them back on MNR and LIRR brings back a lot of nostalgia.
They cleaned it up!
I am very glad to see that the M3s are back in service.
It’s nice to see those back in service, I love those cars
@Lighthouse in the Storm It gives us railfans more time to catch these old workhorses before they're scrapped.
@@waldwickperson right!

Oh Wow Welcome Back Long Island Railroad Trains Cars M3’s 💝🎁🎀🎊🎄.
Love to see these gals running the rails again!
I love M3 and I am glad to see them back in service
Awesome! One of my favorite M3 videos!
Really great to see the older M3s return to service
Loved the way it pulled out of the station
I am glad to see all those smiling faces (with no mask). Makes me think I can visit NY in November.

For sure, id like to have the lovely LIRR RFWs back. Now the M3A has its competition back 🤝😎😏
Great video, I was in the first car 'round 2:45 in the vid before heading back to the last car
Would be cool if the very first inaugural train to Grand Central was an M3 these are the best trains in the LIRR
Sadly the M3s aren’t allowed to run to grand central terminal for ESA

@@banksrail they aren’t strong enough to exit the steep portals. If they stop on it, they can’t start moving again.

Like the painting man of this train
Also why does it say "Title" briefly around 3:51 lol
Edit: now its around 3:49
I noticed that as well. There used to be one in the beginning but he removed it.
Are they tracking on TrainTime? Do they have the capacity calculators installed?

Why is the conductor’s window so out of place on these cars. They weren’t delivered that way. Why the retrofit?

LIRR will need these M3’s for a lot longer than Metro North for Grand Central Madison
3:33 why did they repaint all the fronts, except this one?
Obviously the cars are quite capable of doing the job. No need to retire them.
Yeah, in a perfect world...
Exactly. Scrapping a fully functional locomotive in great condition makes about as much sense as taking a working honda accord to a scrap yard.
Rode these from penn to Farmingdale many a time.
Some legends never die!
I mostly love this train a lot. I love the red version and I like the blue version.
The seats look pretty good
Time for the M3 to get back in service
I was just here today to find this as well :D
Why do some cars have a blue stripe but some don't?
YAAAAAAY I see them on the PWB before.
Why do some M3s on LIRR have a blue stripe like the M3As?
M3A’s are painted to look like the LIRR (I think) And for the M7A they paint them too.. It’s probably that
oh wow, didn't think they'd put them back in service!
I’m glad that M3 are back but sad thing is that M3 won’t go to new terminals of Grand central as well as DM30AC
Why?
@@kevin-cy3cf they may not be able to make it through the portal to and from grand central as they might be too large to fit
