      hey Scotty, i drive a 2000 ford expedition and i have steam or smoke and a smell coming through my heater like pancakes and its slowly putting out less and less heat. i have told people about it and they are telling me i have a heater core leak but i haven't had anyone look at it, my coolant is kinda low but i never had to top it off before i'm not running hot or anything but of coarse i haven't changed my coolant in a few years and it looks like its sludgy orange/brownish, i was wondering if you think it could just need flushing and replacing the coolant or if its really the core leaking? do you have any other videos on this?

      Yes I agree, badly mechanics have a bad reputation because honest mechanics are hard to find, no long ago I had to pay $200 for a radiator flush/bleed just because he said it will fix the engine from overheating and get the heater core back to work WHAT A SHAME !! Didn't work

    Just flushed the heater core on my 2007 Chevy Equinox using the exact methods you described here, including the Lime-Away. Worked like a charm, heater blows nice and hot now. Thank you Scotty!

    Your video helped me confirm why the heater on my grandpa's old truck wasn't working. I told him and he had a mechanic look at it and it turned out that the heater core was partially blocked. He had it flushed out and lots of crap came out. After that, the heat could bout drive you out of the truck. Thanks Scotty Kilmer. 😊😊🖒🖒

    Another trick when flushing is to attach the garden hose to the hose where water normally leaves, rather than where the water normally enters. This is because clogs sometimes break free easier when they are pressured from the other direction.

    i had to do that on my sierra... don't use the rad sealant stuff it will "seal" up a heater core too but after i flushed mine out it was nice and toasty again

    Flushing your coolant every 2-3 years prevents things like this from happening!

    Thanks Scott this fixed my problem with my heater core. It took over 2 hours to get a big clog out had to use limeaway twice. The only thing I didn't like was all the smoke that started flying after you started the car again. My pipes where long to keep the water away from the engine.

    Lime-A-Way is just relabeled, diluted hydrochloric acid, and fragrance (but probably much, much safer than trying to use the undiluted acid). However, the knowledge I gain watching "everyone" of your videos is priceless.

    I once cleaned out a heater core that was really clogged, no water at all went through, water pressure alone wasn't enough, so I hooked it up to compressed air, BANG a massive plug of clay like substance resembling a dog turd came flying out! LMAO! Heater worked great after that!

      Will a clogged heater core damage the engine? I would like to purposely to clog mine because the mixer door is always open and making the interior hot all the time. I don't need heater in my tropical country.

      Covert Person I’m all out of ideas literally I have replaced almost everything. Replaced thermostat, temp sensors, new radiator , new radiator fans (running direct) , new water pump and still no luck I’m about to give up

    Tried it and it worked. Didn't use any chemicals though, instead applied pressure in both directions and played with flowrates for a longer period of time.

    Great cheap fix, Scotty! You forgot to mention that it's most effective to BACK-FLUSH the heater core, meaning spray into the hose that is usually the outlet (the cooler one to the touch). I've done a few GMs this way and a whole bunch of rust chunks came out...probably from that DEX-COOL crap they use haha. Nice and hot after the flush, just in time for this 0F weather up here in PA!

    I did this to my old car last winter. On the REALLY cold days (-25C) I would get air barely a few degrees warm coming out; and this was especially bad because my windshield kept freezing on the inside. Before I flushed out all the crap that built up in the core, no amount of running would heat the car up enough to actually melt the ice.

    I used CLR once and it worked just fine. Also I made sure to run the flush in the opposite direction that the fluid normally flows to help break up the contamination stuck in the very tiny veins and passageways.. Seems like the gunk just kept coming.

    Great points about the blend door actuators and the heater hoses going to the core. Hot going in to core eliminates the entire cooling system. And like you said even if actuators where bad would be 2 separate issues (unlikely).

    Nice video Scotty. My wife was having no heating issues with her 2013 Chevy Sonic TL 1.4 L. after they replaced her water pump at 10k miles. I had to take it back to the dealer. Turned out they didn't burp the system when doing the warranty repair.

      I can't imagine the heater core in the Volvo costs anywhere close to $1000. Most likely a big chunk of that is labor, if the mechanic has to largely disassemble the dashboard to get to the heater core.

Is it okay and safe to just switch the hoses’ positions on the heater core and run it like that? Somebody suggested that I do that instead of replacing the heater core itself.

    Thank's Scotty Kilmer I had this same happening to old 96 GMC Yukon and did the same thing that you did in this video but with out the fancy computer scanner tool that's nice but did not need that for my old ride. The bend doors were open in and closing becuse I could her them oping and closing. Also my Yukon is reaching operating temperature like normal so the Thermostat is working. But found that one hose going to the heater core was really hot and the other just warm. So I did what you did and flushed out the heater core like you did and not much com out but after 30 minutes with the Lime Away and fished aging to get the Lime Away all out it flushed out nicely. so hooked back you the heater hoses topped of my coolant level and drove it a round and I have heat now when driving and idling and it the heat blows nice now as my old Yukon warms up like normal as it gets up to operating temperature like normal. Thanks Scotty that was very help video and saved my a lot of money.

    He Scotty, it looks like you go to a bunch of cool places. :)
    Also last year a friend of mine and I did almost that exact same thing to his Ford Taurus. We had to run the water though backwards though because of how clogged up it was. All kinds of gunk and crap came out. We kept the garden hose pushing through until the water was clean comming out. Then we went the normal way until it was clean again.

    Hey wassup Scotty i got a 1995 ford mustang 3.8l v6 , when i first turn it on for the day my car its good but once i go for like a 10+ min drive and wanna turn it on again it dont turn on only the dash emergency lights and radio everything but engine dont start but once i let it sit for a while it turns on again , what you think is the problem?

      often a bad starter does that, they get hot, and short out

    Would this method also work for a 2007 LR3? No hot air on driver's side, but passenger side is fine.

      you can try, but more often that's being low on coolant or a bad blend door actuator on the drivers side

    Scott whenever i step off the gas pedal and re apply it when my automatic car is in movement I can feel like a jump it does it sometimes. What can the problem be? Its not a hard jump its really not that noticeable

    Hey Scotty I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 v6 that has the temp gauge moving up then down with hot air coming on when it goes down. I put a new thermostat in and still same issue with engine smoking after driving for 20-30 minutes. Could it just need a flush ?

    I actually put a male adapter on a piece of heater hose so it will attach to my garden hose and ran the water in reverse flow to my heater core.... Just ran it till the water came out clear... You'd be surprised how much crud came out... That helped out a lot.... But my main problem was that my car had a restricter that was partially clogged.. The previous owner poured a bunch of sealer with the pellets in the system before replacing the radiator and there was a lot of residue from it..

    earlier volvo SCV 70's are easy to replace the cores, Couldn't you use shop air or compressed air on it? Thats been done with some success. After doing that several times I had to replace my core anyway. It was amazing what I found when I opened it up. No matter how much caustic or acid I poured in it was still gunged up with all sorts, I'm sure the PO had used rad-weld or block sealer as I had to replace the radiator previously. But flushing a core I would say is just putting it off to replacing it.

    mr kilmer need your help my 2004 civic ex is acting up on me when i turn the heater on my temp gauge is moving up towards red the heat is blowing good hot air i check the coolant level and is low i added coolant but again when i use the heater is going low again please help

      odds are you have a leak somewhere. Pressure test the system and fix that first, it could cause all those problems

    Hey scotty, question when its cold in the morning and after my vehicle warms up while driving. I will turn on the heat and my temp gauge will start to fall.? I have a new thermostat and flushed everything out the weird thing is i still have heat. Any other suggestions? I have a 07 mazda cx-7. Much appreciated.

    Wont the tap water cause probles in the cooling system? I think you should remove all water (flush it with coolant) from the heater core before you put it back together and fill it up with coolant, the minerals in the water will form limescale in the raidiator causing it to clog up. Correct me if I am wrong.

      I think that if you just blow some compressed air through it that you will get most of the water out and what's left will probably evaporate from the heat of the engine. Flushing it with coolant is just a waste of good coolant to me.

      Sorry, I meant destiled water not the actual coolant antifreeze, but yea copressed air might just do the work, but I dont think there is any way the water can evaporate in a closed circuit, which cooling is.

      tap water doesn't hurt to flush, but if you're a fanatic, you can air blow it out when done and put in distilled water and coolant

      xJoey_NL It won't make much of a difference at all for such an old part since tap water really isn't that hard. I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong so I learn something) that you really only need to use distilled if you're replacing old junk parts with brand new ones especially since gallons of distilled are super cheap. But if you're just flushing old parts and hoses, tap water can't hold a candle to the particles and gunk that is already in your system from years of use.

    If I have a faint scent of antifreeze when I put on defrost in addition to fine mist, only when I first turn on vent fan, does this mean my core is bad and needs replacing? Can a simple flush really eliminate my issue? I have heat when set on low (1), but cooler on higher settings. I thought I had a leak and put Barr core fix solution in and then my heat went away. Mechanic, I am not!

      Car runs like a top and never burns a drop of oil. New water pump last year, and replaced it back then. Never had heat problems until this year.

    Quick tip use hot water from your washing machine. Your hose will fit on it. I say this from experience with mt 96 S10. I had Chevy and two other mechanics use cold water and every year it would have to be done and finally the fourth used hot water and BAM! heater perfection!

    Hey Scotty, I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant that blows ice cold air when I turn the heater on. When I got the car I noticed that when I switched the temp from cold to hot that I could hear a vibrating/rattling noise for a couple of seconds and then the heat would start working.
    About two winters ago I would have to keep turning it from cold to hot when I first started it to get it to make that vibrating noise and then the heat would work. I took it to my mechanic three different times when it would go days without working but when it came time to bring it in the heat would start working again. He said it could be either the heater core or the blend door but since it was working when he got to my car that all he could do was guess which it was.
    After that it worked fine for the rest of winter, but a couple of months ago I turned the A/C on because it was an unusually warm day. It's now gone two months without working. Which does it sound like to you? Or would I need my mechanic to see it when it's not working?

    My 81 928 has blend doors and a heater valve as part of its auto climate control. It seems like modern cars got more simple after the transition from analog to digital back in the 80's in cars. BTW great video Scotty.

    I highly suggest you do not do it this way. If your core is brittle and you snap off one of the terminals you're going to have to yank the dash to replace it. So disconnect them further downstream and flush from there. Do not mess with the hoses at the core itself.

    hi scotty i wanted to ask you that i have civic ek its heater core was clogged i clean it by this method but the problem is that car is soo old and its heater core also clogged up for air flow throug it and its very difficult to tak out heater core its back side of central dash board what should i do to clean that core to flow air through it is there any other method to to clean junk dirt from it except taking out whole dash board and central console

      Mister H don't use CLR it is too hard on aluminum. Just use a flush treatment chemical like Prestone flush kit.

    Hi Scotty, will it damage the engine if I just clamp the rubber hose to the heater core to block the flow instead of bypassing it? I don't need the heater because Malaysia is summer all the time. The heater core flap doesn't close properly making the interior always hot. My car is 1995 Nissan Primera with SR20DE engine.

      +Arthur Rostomyan first remove both heater hoses under the hood where they feed the heater. Then flush the heater core using a garden hose to get crud out. Then fill it with the garden hose and quickly put the hoses back on the heater core that you removed. Then jack the front of the car up, so air will come out the radiator with the cap removed as it warms up and opens the thermostat

    that is really good to see. I have to replace a radiator when it gets warm and I intend to flush the engine and heater core. It's a dodge ram, but similar enough. thanks!

    Are you able to tell me what Lime Away to use (please)? Is it a regular cleaner product, etc. Or specifically made to clean a clogged heater core.

      jimmynitr - if limeaway is not handy, you can use regular kitchen vinegar as well to remove rust and corrosion.

    I think I should do this once spring rolls around. My heat works just fine, but I figured I'd do it sooner than later before my heat actually stops working

      I've flushed the radiator twice in the 6 years I've had it, it has a new thermostat and gasket, I just haven't done the heater core yet.

      It was in excellent condition when I got it at 66k miles. I want to try and keep it that way for as long as I can.

    Believe it or not, the heater core is actually very easy to access on that Volvo and you don't even have to remove the dash. It just slides out from underneath the drivers kick panel.

      not on this model, the book pays 6 hours labor to pull the stupid thing out, including removal of the steering wheel.

      Yeah I've noticed that. Though I do think they hold up better than VWs and other European cars do with age.

      Still some have millions of miles on their volvo's..One guy in Maryland has a million or two on his volvo 240 I think. His name is Selden I think. Irv Gordon in Long Island has over 3 million miles. I have 2012 s80 3.2 that I use on occasion. My 88'olds ciera is my daily driver. My heater is completely cold. Mechanic said on the phone it could be thermostat. If we get a break in this snowy winter I will get over to him and have NYS inspection as well.

    As long as you feed the pressure through the exit pipe, cos otherwise it wont do it properly Ypou gotta back flush.

    My heater core on my 2002 crown victoria was clogged. What happened was the police department that owned it before me never changed the coolant.....so it got so dirty, it formed a thin layer of sediment on the inside of the heater core. Tried flushing it out, but the sediment was just stained inside the heater core...not even CLR worked. So I had to unfortunately replace the heater core....did it myself. Yea the heater core is barely holding on to the heater hoses (had a hard time getting the box assembly to screw back into the firewall. It is only hanging on by 1 bolt instead of 3), but Its been 2 years and so far so good. lol

    Good Day Mr. Kilmer! 2013 Jeep Wrangler has heat on passenger side, but not driver side. I've replaced the door actuator before, and recently just flushed the heater core (not your method). Still no heat. How can the heater core allow for one side to get some heat and the other side no heat???

    Clogged is one thing, leaking coolant is another. Swing by house and change the heater core in my 96' Dodge Ram...Dont forget to bring a lunch...

    Hello Scotty, I have a civic ex I'm having a oil leak problem don't know from where is coming but it's between tranny and the motor. I have checked the motor oil and so far the oil still haven't gone down. But I have noticed that it's getting hard to shift.
