Blanching is a lot like when farmers spray their crops before a freeze. It protects the inside from getting frost bitten but in this case we call it freezer.burn.

Peel your broccoli stems. The inside of the stems are delicious. Cut into broccoli sticks and dip in ranch raw or just cook them up with your broccoli florets. Corn, peas and beans do best if they are directly sowed. Sometimes you have to seed them a couple of times because birds, moles and other critters like to eat the spouts. I’m glad the cantaloupes got planted. Would have been sad to throw them plant out lol.

you will not run out of milk so much if you stop throwing away the milk after you have scopped off the cream:- you are wasting food and money!!!!! READ THIS:
Skimmed Milk, Not “Skim Milk” -When skimming your milk, it’s best to skim off the heavy cream and the half-and-half cream but leave the light cream. The light cream is then mixed back into the milk (usually by shaking the container each time before pouring a glass of milk). We refer to this as “skimmed milk,” not to be confused with “skim milk” or nonfat milk (0% milkfat) from the store.
Heavy Cream - Once you’ve milked the cow and placed it into the refrigerator, the cream will continue to rise to the top of the jar for up to 48 hours. If you allow it to sit a full 48 hours, the very top of the cream will be what’s considered heavy cream. This heavy cream is wonderful for churning into butter, homemade cream cheese, or making homemade ice cream.
Half & Half or Thin Cream - The middle cream, just below the heavy cream, will be a thinner consistency than heavy cream but thicker than the cream just above the milk line. This “thin cream” is equivalent to that of half and half from the grocery store. Half & Half is excellent to use when culturing cream into sour cream and can also be great when making ice cream and some other soft cheeses.
Coffee Cream or Light Cream - Finally, the very lowest part of the cream is called light cream. It’s just about the consistency of the milk itself, except the color will be that of cream. This thinnest cream is often referred to as coffee cream. This is what we recommend leaving with the milk. The amount left behind will usually represent true whole milk (about 4%).

    • @patriotmama
      @patriotmama 5 месяцев назад +11

Truth. We skim cream off and drink the rest of the milk. Also make cheese of all kinds with the milk after cream is skimmed off. I never understood why they throw all that milk out. I make butter and use the cream for so many other things. We use it all. Never throw it out like that.

It would help the kiddos weed/know what not to pull. I adore how he says yes I want cantaloupe, plants it, says we should keep the brocoli, says he won't harvest it. Advocating for what he wants, doesn’t want, & boundary setting shows a great job of parenting!

I think Jonah appreciates the problem solving and He loves his family, no doubt he will go on in life with the skills to run a farm and all that goes with it. I love to see your daughter in the kitchen, she may need to do her own farmstyle cooking show someday, but she is so much more than that. Henry is adorable and loves being a part of everything and having jobs to do. Your other sons are coming right along with responsibility and knowing when to ask for help is commendable. Just seeing them operating vehicles is crazy to me, but learning early gives them the skills. I was a wreck when my kids needed to learn to drive after their Dad passed away. I wish I had let them practice early with him, like you do with your family. I think we have gotten away from giving kids responsibility. Pile it on and be there for guidance. Always the best way. Rebecca is amazing too!

Jonah wants to get more production out of the garden, and instead of seeing that as a good thing Justin throws it back at him “well then you harvest and blanch them.” You actually think one wagon of broccoli is going to sustain a year. So much for not going to the grocery store. Gardening is hard work. Canning; blanching and freezing is all part of the process. Probably end up paying someone to process their garden before long. Oh wait they hired smiley. Half a@@ing it is a waist.

If you have the roofers put a layer or two of shingles turned 90 degrees from how they ordinarily run, along the edge of the roof, underneath the existing shingles, it will slope the rain from the edge toward the middle of the roof, just a little. Replace that flexible downspout with a rigid one that includes an elbow at the end, pointed toward the middle of the roof. Also, I think you could modify an existing length of gutter with some tin snips to make it shallower over that wall. Cut the bottom out, bend the sides up to be the bottom supports and rivet the bottom back to the folds. Seal the heck out of the seams with silicone. You could have a metal fabricator bend one up, or modify some existing gutter.

It’s obvious. Maybe it’s time to step it up and help them get their farmhouse back to a point that they can manage. It’s obvious that not only the stress of a high risk pregnancy but the state of the farm house that they were trying to recover from threw their family into a state of something that didn’t need to happen if community had actually been paying attention and helping. Just saying. I know y’all can make it happen. They are worth it.

When you do the past/muted colour shots you should keep voice at the same level as normal shots. It is hard to make out with lowered volume. For any other audio it is fine though. Voice is very delicate that lowering it throws off the average listening level of the rest of the video.

Wow, lot of waste with broccoli plants. Save the stems and chop for broccoli/cheddar soup. Plants would have set heads again. Broccoli does not cook in 3 minutes.

Gideon on the pig reminded me of a fun book. "Real Ponies Don't Go Oink" by Patrick F. McManus. Any farm kid would get a kick out his work.

They plant corn here in W KY zone 7a all the way up to July 4th., so I would think you still have time to start more.

Im confused, are you going to replant broccoli! Is that enough for the whole year

I'm sure they'll do a fall planting, but if they want enough for a year, they'll have to do a lot more. They sure have the ability to do it though! I have yet to successfully grow anything bigger than a quarter. 😢😅
