It really is a struggle. I fight it everyday. Some days are better than others, some are not. If I get really nervous, I can't get a word out at all. It'll take me about 20 seconds to get one out. And I'll always end up saying the wrong thing most times or not making any sense at all.
Mel actually did have therapy and improved his speech quite a lot. I heard him when he was older and I almost wished for the stutter back, except that he was so much happier to speak freely. But he made the stutter such a positive thing. Have you watched _The King's Speech?_ I put off watching it but I saw it recently and I feel like they did justice to Bertie's struggles and his determination.
I just prayed for healing and God healed me..Most times we make ourselves nervous before speaking, once you set your mind to not concentrating so much on the shuddering it gets easier..Just relax before speaking..
I met Pam Tillis at a concert in Salt lake City, I was her security guard. I stutter and Pam thought I was messing with her because of her father. People laugh at people who stutter but they don't know how hard it is to deal with and the pain it causes. I admire Pam and her father for making the best of a problem that has followed them for a long time.
My beloved, Father, and I both stuttered and there is NOTHING wrong with it. I have, learned to appreciate my unique quality. God, bless your Mel Tillis.
several of my cousins of the same family stutter. i think it ws because of their father. as they grew older the stutter wasnt so pronounced. their father was very strict and unforgiving
Gung-Ho Bigfoot Adventures He sure didn’t. His Dad stuttered and his brothers, so he was raised to pretty much stutter due to environment. On his first day of school, he came home and asked his mom if he stuttered.. she said “yes, son”. He told her that the kids were laughing at him. She told him “well give them something to laugh at..” So he said “That was my first day in entertainment.”
Hog wash you don't know what kind of hell it is to stutter!! Stupid people laugh at those who stutter but the facts are people who stutter have to listen more and talk less so they are smarter and have a higher IQ.
I remember seeing him in concert and saying, "I have stuttered all my life and for the last 25 years, professionally, and making a good living at it." He did embrace it and made it work.
Mel Tillis was a class act. I loved him telling stories about his Cousin TT. RIP Mr Tillis. Your daughter, Pam is a force to be reckoned with. From a proud Canadian fan. 🇨🇦❤🌹🙏🌈🦋
For all you youngsters getting all bent out of shape and PC about the stutter comments (and the audience laughing about it), Mel's stutter was real and he made it a part of his act. So relax.
I don't care myself.People always told me I should try singing till they heard me sing then they told to never sing again. I was told to try singing because I stutter like he did.
I can’t believe I finally found someone telling this story! My dad would break out into this randomly & I always used to wonder where the hell he got it from! THANK YOU for posting this!
bless mel tiillis...sorry to here that he went to heaven today..loved everything he ever did.. cant wait to see him there.. hes making everyone happy , singing and joking for ever more..an american hero
Me and my girlfriend use to clean his hotel room at Hampton inn in summer of 2005ish in Branson Missouri ( later called Angel inn) He would play his guitar and tell stories. He was one of the most genuine people on Earth. You will be missed Mr Tillis.
If I may ask, which Angel Inn and what room number (if you can recall)? My family and I have stayed in the Angel Inn near the IMAX a few times. Would be pretty cool if I've stayed in the same room as Mel haha
I used to watch him on talk shows back in the 70s and I really appreciated how he incorporated the stutter into his act. When I went to college, I had a friend who stuttered and he told the most fabulous stories about his real life experiences. I think watching Mel as a teen gave me the understanding and grace to respect his speech. If not for Mel I probably wouldn't have heard all the stories my friend had to tell.
The best story I heard Mel tell was the one where he was at a party and he saw Tom T. Hall. He walked up to him and said, "Tom, I just got done writing a new song and want your opinion". So they walk up to the piano and Mel starts singing the song to Tom whereby Tom stops him mid-way and says, "Mel that song ain't goin' nowhere, won't be a hit so I recommend you sell it if you can". Mel takes his advice and sells the song whereby it is sung by another artist and it goes on to sell 5 million copies and makes the artist a household name! You see the song was Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town, the artist Kenny Rogers and that's how they say is music history!!
Mel stuttered because he had malaria as a kid; he was a bit self-conscious about it when he was younger, and lots of people made fun of him for it. Minnie Pearl showed him he could use his stutter to his comedic advantage, and I suppose he got over it (the self-consciousness). She was kind and understanding like that for a lot of people.
Mel Tillis will always be an inspiration to every stutterer that's ever lived. And I know he came to terms with it and could joke about it but that first laugh he gets when they think he is doing the stutter for comedic affect just kinda hits hard. Stutterers learn they can get a laugh because of their stutter even if they weren't trying to but that first laugh just always hurts. You're not laughing with me but at me
This man is hilarious! And I admire him for using his speech impediment To become even more famous than he was when he got started to in the music industry! He will definitely be missed!.m
I saw him live at the Allegheny county fair about 40 years ago and he told the story about when he got a job as a auctioneer once..... " I got fired" 🤣😂🤣😂😂 we all still love you Mr Tillis your spirit lives on forever as we pass your music down through our generations 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

You hear his songs, even though I'm not a country fan, other than Hank Sr. Johnny Cash, and Very old Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson of course. Everyone knew it was real and not a part of the act. Even so, he played that stutter for everything it was worth. People laughed about it, because he laughed about it.
My dad and I both stuttered. I still do, he doesn't. Well, he's a preacher, when I was little I would be teased a lot because we both had it bad. Well as I got older I realized it wasn't so bad after all. If anyone died and went to hell it was their own fault, they heard the message thrice in one sermon 😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😅😅
I wonder if he has had seizures all his life. Stuttering can be small seizures in the speech center of the brain and people can sometimes, sing but can't talk well with them.
As somebody who's stuttered their whole life it helps hearing other people with success who fight the good fight, inspiration is truly missed....
