Crippling Perfectionism: Why I Wish I Didn't Get All A*s at GCSE & A Level?

  • I hope this video kinda somehow makes sense. (& please watch it before commenting! I know it's a mad title haha). ✨ Of course, I value all the time and effort and everything that went into the grades I'm SUPER proud of, but having only ever achieved the "top", having gained that reputation of a 'high achiever' at school... it cultivated a perfectionistic mindset which can be so crippling. I tried to portray some of my honest experience in this video. Enjoy. ❤️ x
If you've ever struggled with perfectionism, school pressures or the weight of expectations, hi hello I feel you! 🌻 Genuinely, doing your BEST is the most anyone can ask of you. I wish I could give my past self the perspective I now have. Work hard, have your goals and dreams and grades to aim for, but don't feel tied to the expectations of others. Lots of love x

Try being a high achieving perfectionist who DIDN’T get A*’s. Crippling self deprecation and disappointment yay. Every time someone says they got an A* it kills me because I put in so much effort and didn’t get the results to reflect that. I know my results were good but they weren’t the best, and I will never forgive myself for that

Jade!!! I think this is my favourite video you’ve ever uploaded. It is just SO IMPORTANT and I can relate with what you said very much (as can so many people on this platform!). Obviously I didn’t get all A*s at A Level but what you said on the debilitating effect of perfectionism, and the continual pressure and fear surrounding the comparison of others to yourself is very much relatable. You articulated this *perfectly*. Thank you for sharing xxx

but it’s hard to maintain... i mean, when you start getting all A*s, you are pressured to always achieve that thing. Then you get disappointed when you got grades lower than expected. When I was in elementary school, I don’t really pressure myself even tho most of the people around me keeps on comparing my *lazy* behavior to their *successful* children. Then high school came (we don’t have middle school thingy). I started to try and achieve for something higher. It’s great because I can achieve my goals... however, the higher my achievements are, the higher my next goals will be aaaand the higher the pressure.
so for me, i’d rather go back to my old state (if that’s what u call it) and don’t let anyone put so much burden to me...
*in the end maybe it’s just me*
thanks for reading if u reach this part...

Jade, you have no idea how relatable this video is to me. When you were talking about how those annoying people say: 'Oh my god, I got higher than the smartest girl' and feeling embarrassed in class when you answer a question incorrectly, I could relate and understand the struggle. I am a perfectionist and there is no doubt of it. I am very proud of my achievements, but sometimes getting one result which is lower that my expectations clouds all my past achievements and makes me question my abilities. Thank you for making this video and letting me know that I am NOT the only student who feels this way. x

THIS!!! Thank you, just thank you so so much for sharing your thoughts (and experience) on perfectionsim. I already know that I'm going to watch this over and over again. Not because it is "perfect", but because it is real. I read some comments on this video and was stupidly suprised about how many people can relate to this. On some days I feel like everyone around me can handle things easily. That I may be the only person, not working hard enough. But we all work hard enough. Our happiness, effort, productivity, selflove, motivation. We as a human being are our own full-time job. Juggling all that and at the same time dealing with the struggles we face along with it, makes us more than "perfect". It makes us strong and understanding. I think we all should take a step back and be proud of ourselves once in a while. Appreciate the effort we put in things that we love and things that we don't. So again, thank you for inspiring me (and others). Thank you for being honest and most importantly thank you for being you.
    Lots of love, Sophia.

I think they’re trying to same that it’s the same because whoever you are if you personal goals for yourself and you don’t make them it can be crippling to your confidence. Good students have it just as hard (especially if they don’t understand everything at first) to get the top grades every time.

I think we can often forget that our lives are very much a personal journey and so we often compare ourselves to other people rather than to our own previous achievements. It is key to remember that life is not just about competing with other people but about bettering ourselves and so if someone beats you in a test and everyone starts talking about how someone has beaten you, it is important to stay grounded and remember it is not all about what other people get. Jade, your video points that out very well so thank you for giving us the reminder that I'm sure many of us need. We are all on a personal journey and sometimes that 'you have to do better than other people mentality' can hinder us and our personal development. Once again thank you Jade for reminding us all!

this!! video!! omg!!! preach the truth sister
you are so right about "invisible standards", that those standards are placed there by you and not anybody else. I realized this after I was accepted into university, my parents were proud, my teachers approved, and yet I STILL felt like I couldn't get any less than an A. It was never about any practical thing like "I need these grades for university." It was always about seeming good enough for myself, and those invisible standards that I'd built up for myself. Those standards never stayed the same, either- once I had all 90s in my classes I would begin thinking they needed to be 95s. You're chasing an unattainable goal because you will never reach true perfectionism.

I spent the weeks going up to results days having reoccurring nightmares about failing. I ended up getting SO stressed that I ended up having health problems and it was ridiculous.
The “what did you get?” question is so annoying sometimes, I had amazing friends who also got great grades (through so much hard work), which led to me always feeling like I wasn’t doing enough etc. I’m also taking time away from education and I’ve realised this lesson too.

Oh Jade! Thank you for this video. Everything you have just said sums up my entire thoughts, feelings and emotions in 5 short minutes. I feel so ready after watching this to just DO. Because, like you, I’m always waiting for the perfect conditions until I can start something or hand something in. For example, I remember last year I took my geography end of topic test home and never handed it in because I was so afraid of not getting the highest, as I am known as the master of geography and earth sciences. Which although i knew was counter productive, maintaining the reputation of knowing everything geography related (and I don’t know everything anyway!) took over. Thank you. I truly love your videos - they never fail to make my heart glow and a smile to spread across my face!! 💛☀️☘️

Jade, I can relate to this so much, and the fact that you made this video honestly means a lot to me! I have always had good grades and worked hard for them, but everyone acts like it just comes naturally to me. The fact that I´ 'm terrified of failure doesn't help at all, and it´s so scary to feel all of those invisible standards and expectations, like you are not ever allowed to make a mistake. And I get it when you talked about people saying "I´ve got a higher grade than a studytuber?!", since when some people get a higher grade than me make that statement, like it´s getting a higher grade than me that is amazing, not their grade itself.

I got 12 A*s at GCSE and 4 As at AS (taking A Levels in summer) and I do kind of relate to this- everyone expects you to do the best, but they don’t expect you to need any time to learn and revise in order to do so! I feel like people assume you just naturally get top grades with no real effort, which is frustrating because (at least for me) it requires a huge amount of organisation and hard work over a long period of time.
Biggest piece of advice would be to try and stop taking yourself so seriously and appreciate academic failure as something you can always learn from. Get motivated by “bad” results to find out exactly where you went wrong and how to not do it again (and learn to laugh at a horrendous score)! It’s hard when you’ve put a lot of effort into something but trying to remember that in the big picture it doesn’t actually matter is much better for your mental wellbeing.

Whilst I do respect that this in itself is a personal challenge, due to the pressure that building expectations will exhibit, at the same time the sheer notion of making a video about this is really inconsiderate and closed minded.
Lots of people would try extremely hard in their exams, and still could only dream of getting the grades you managed to procure both at GCSE and A-Level. In my opinion its not helpful to then say 'you wish you hadn't' gotten these grades because frankly, it *does* come across as ungrateful despite you saying you're not being it. Saying you're not being ungrateful doesn't mean that the exogenous view other people have isn't that of gratitude lack thereof in the big picture. Personally I do find it a bit snobbish to sit there and 'wish' you hadn't gotten these grades. No. That's not helpful for anyone.
I understand the message of the video but the title completely contradicts that and yes, is ungrateful. You should change the title to 'the challenges of being a high achiever', rather than the obviously click-bait and ungrateful, snobbish title of 'I wish I didn't get these grades'. Your choice of lexis really contradicts the message you put across and really makes me question the authenticity of what you say - I used to respect what you say but now I feel you have given into the fame and success of you-tube that you choose to title your videos in such a way that elicits nothing but ungratefulness.

    • @elm2908

It’s not “ungrateful” of her to say this because these grades were not handed to her, she worked her arse off for them so she can choose how she feels about them. I understand that some people work hard and would have loved to achieve the grades that she did, but they don’t have more of a right than jade does to feel upset about their grades.

this makes me uncomfortable. just from the title. I don’t even want to hear you out. there are people who want to go far in life who genuinely struggle to even pass their exams but try their absolute hardest. Yes, it’s “hard” having expectations, but it’s even harder not reaching the standards set by others like you, and being someone who struggles deeply with mental health issues because they don’t think they’re good enough. “Crippling perfectionism” - there are people who have it so much worse and perfectionism has its benefits, a lot more than what it would be like to not give a fuck and to fail everything. So please, even if you’re feeling hard done by or you’re struggling (we all struggle from time to time), we don’t need a video about it.

El M yh like this video solved all your problems. People with OCD have “crippling perfectionism”. CRIPPLING in this title bothers me; it is much more serious of a word than she is making out. People actually have crippling conditions which mean they can’t function properly. This girl herself has everything she could ever need to prosper. Being intelligent has its drawbacks but far more positives.

    • @millie7289
      @millie7289 5 лет назад +4

M x please stop being so judgemental.Jade may have everything she needs to achieve good grades and get a good job but that’s not what this video is about, it’s about realising that not everything has to be perfect. You claim to care so much about mental health yet you fail to accept the fact that videos like these can help people suffering with mental health problems and you get angry that Jade put the word “crippling” when describing her perfectionism. It’s not your place to decide wether she finds her perfectionism “crippling” or not.

  • @anonsecondname5810

I’m a high-achieving student, and like ... I get what you’re saying. I agree there’s too much pressure on students. I’m just not sure about the statement I guess, something about it sounds wrong but I’m struggling to explain it. My cousin goes to a bad school and has autism, so although has potential, can’t get the grades to get into the same secondary school as his brother, he’s working well below his age because apparently no one knows how to teach autistic kids. Like, pressure sucks, I know, but I hope you know you’re incredibly privileged, like it or not. So am I, even if I doubt to the same extent, based on your videos. Making the statement you wish you hadn’t gotten those grades because it made you a perfectionist ... just gives me the impression you don’t understand how horrible it is to have real barriers - not laziness, not pressure, those are in a different category - in the way of you achieving what you deserve. I’m not sure if there are flaws in this example because I haven’t analysed it, but to me it sounds a little like a wealthy person saying “I wish I didn’t have all this money, everyone expects me to buy the nicest things and makes jokes when they buy something more expensive, it’s so much pressure!”
    I don’t know if I make sense.
Just my thoughts. I don’t mean this like, “you should feel bad for saying this!!!!”, I’m more hoping it’ll make you think about people in other situations, show a different perspective :) I’m not saying it’s wrong for you to feel this way, it’s okay to have these emotions and I’m not saying you didn’t work hard for your grades, I just think the statement shows naivety, idk

It makes you think that you‘re going to fail, and no one ever sympathizes with you and everyone is annoyed by you, like so many people in the comments, because they all hate your guts because you always have perfect grades and they don’t. But they never understand how much of an emotional toll it takes on you.

hitchinaride94 I know this wasn’t stated in my original post so I get the misunderstanding, but ...
You’re talking to an autistic kid with OCD who has been in top school groups since age 7. Whether regarding grades or obsessive rituals ... perfectionism is and always has been my unwelcome room mate. Been there, had the therapy, done that. I get perfectionism and the effects it has, trust me.
And I’m not saying it doesn’t suck.
However, to wish high grades away because they come with it suggests the person has a lot of privilege, to me. Perfectionism may suck, all the things you listed are not nice, but for you to consider it bad enough that you wish you didn’t have high grades? You probably don’t know what it’s like to have a real, physical barrier between you and those grades, unable to achieve your potential because of circumstance. If perfectionism is high on your list of problems, you are pretty damn lucky. Which isn’t a bad thing, once identified privilege people can use their voices to defend people in less lucky positions. None of that progress can happen if we don’t remember to acknowledge it though, or even in the case of this video, possibly don’t understand we have it in the first place.

Anon SecondName Read my post again. I never said it’s acceptable to wish your good grades away or that I do. I don’t understand why a person is in a privileged position when they have something that is so upsetting to them that they wish they didn’t have it, even if it‘s something nice. Who are you to judge anyone based on what they wish they didn’t have. How is it totally appropriate for underachievers to wish they had something and totally rude and condescending for overachievers to wish they didn’t have the same thing. I have never claimed that I wish I never had good grades. believe me when I say that I have chronic illnesses that you have never even heard about and it’s appalling that you just assume that my biggest worry is having good grades because that is far from the truth, however, it is quite high up there and that should say enough. You said that people are lucky and privileged if they have good grades, both of these terms have very positive connotations, does Jade look happy and positive and privileged about having good grades? Will having good grades help anyone if they crack under the pressure? no it won‘t. People that don’t crack under pressure and have solid but not perfect scores are way better job applicants. The education system should take better care of those that are physically unable to get good grades. But in all honesty, having good grades is not a privilege, it‘s putting hours and hours of solid hard work in and getting the results of your hard work. It’s not always about being born intelligent and having a special gift.

hitchinaride94 First of all, there are different kinds of privilege, which is why people can have “something so upsetting to them they wish they didn’t have it” and still be privileged. Take both of us for example: we have chronic illnesses. I’m disabled and not born into a wealthy family. Those are examples of areas where we don’t have privilege. But, we are still in a position of power because we may have other advantages. I’m white. I go to a really good school. You get the picture, hopefully.
I think overall you’ve misinterpreted my comment slightly.
Good grades does not automatically mean I think a person is lucky and privileged. They may have worked extremely hard for those and managed to overcome those privilege barriers, and even if they have everything in the world handed to them, it was probably still their work to some degree that got them the grades. What I’m saying is, in the majority of cases such as Jade’s, it’s important to acknowledge that you had the opportunity to achieve those grades thanks to the circumstances you were born into, to publicly say you want to throw that gift away just because it comes with some different downsides is pretty gross, because other people would kill to be in her position, and have pressure form perfectionism high on their list of problems. The video comes across as ungrateful and ignorant.
I agree with your hard work point, but I think you’re oversimplifying, it’s a mix of hard work and circumstances. You can work as hard as you like, but if you aren’t given the opportunity to progress and have no resources to create that opportunity yourself ... it becomes incredibly difficult to get to the same point others can easily reach. In a perfect world, you’d be right, but unfortunately that’s not the case, your views are very idealistic.
And finally, on the “who are you to judge” point ... I’m allowed to express an opinion, observation or make an argument. I can easily counter you with, who are you to say I shouldn’t?
I hope I addressed most of the points in your comment, there was only a few I missed if I didn’t really understand what you were saying :)

The fact that you think merely getting all A*'s is perfectionism itself shows you have a lot to learn. And no, I don't mean in some philosophical terms about life experiences etc. Even in the academic domain. Even compared to students your age. A*'s is NOT high-achieving. On the contrary, it's quite low-achieving.
Counter-intuitive ? Ok. Here's a test (not the only way to test)
Did you ever sit for the Math Olympiad ? Did you manage to crack it ?The Chemistry Olympiad (since you say like you Chem) ? Physics ? Biology ? Informatics ? Astronomy ?etc ..Did you represent your country at the International level in any of these competitions ? That's where you meet and battle it out with the best brains from all over the world. The REAL perfectionists! Challenge: Go try any of the past IMO problems. Forget solving, if you understand a single one of them (they are all school level syllabus, Infact, all Olympiads are meant only for school kids..so no advanced knowledge required) you're golden. Merely UNDERSTAND, NOT even inviting you to solve.
If not, forget perfectionism, you're at the bottom of the pyramid. A*'s don't mean a thing there. Core concepts, problem-solving skills, imagination, and application of your knowledge taken to the PERRRRFECT level! Even the last ranked student selected for the Olympiad can reduce the best A* topper to dust. (provided the two sets don't intersect). How do I know that ? Been an integral part of the journey.
Why am I saying this ? Not to demean you ( I really admire you!), not to disrespect the hard-work, effort you've put into acquire those frivolous grades that are not a reflection of true mastery. There's only one reason for me to bring this to light - PERSPECTIVE! yes. You lack perspective! You are setting a wrong notion that A*'s is perfectionism. A* is child's play if you just set your butt working at it. Also it's not a great goal to pursue. Olympiad problems are a true test of your understanding- neither is that a great goal to pursuit. But all I'm saying is it's ridiculous all you've got is A* and you're thinking yourself to be a high-achiever. It's like the frog in the well who took that to be the extent of the world. Again, no offence. Really. Just ridiculous, that's all. I mean it in a good way. Mostly this comment is gonna get ignored, but if you do read, I'd appreciate your take on it through a response. Much love.
