    Teachers are so important with Bio specifically I think. At GCSE I was awful at it, then I re sat at a different school and even went on to do it for AS. it’s mad how teachers can affect your subjects so much.

      Emma Jane I know! I was getting 2s in RE in my old school and I absolutely HATED it (loved the teacher but I couldn’t learn with her). Now I have a new teacher at a new school and I’m getting straight 9s because I love her teaching method, and I’m taking it as an a level next year and I’ll probably be a university lecturer in religion, theology and philosophy when I’m older :)

      IKR? I'd left KS2 primary school with a level 6 [National Curriculum, not GCSE. It's equivalent to a grade 3] in both english and maths.
      The teacher in english [years 7-9] was CRAP I'm telling you! He just likened my struggle with coming up with ideas to write with being 'bad' at english, and he'd always send me to my head of year's office for things like smiling or getting slightly restless. From years 7-9 I was stuck at a grade 2-3.
      But after getting my teacher changed in late/mid year 9, I was instantly surrounded by enthusiastic kids as well as a fun and helpful new teacher. After my first unit test in that class, I got a grade 6. And in year 10, in another unit test, got an 8.
      Teachers affect your EVERYTHING when it comes to school but I hate how the system would still blame it all on you even if your teacher never lets you stay in class.

    Doing (OCR A) A-level Biology at year 12 atm, and I approve. I've skimmed through the spec and there's a distinct difference between GCSE and A-level Bio. GCSE Bio is a joke compared to that of A-level's. Learning it is quite easy (to me at least), but as Jade said the sheer size of it is the problem. Too much content needs to be covered and memorization plays a key role. Overall, it's very interesting but challenging. Welp, thanks for scaring us Jade!

    I'm in year 13 currently just finishing biology, chemistry, and geography spec. I 100% agree with all of this it's so difficult to apply and analyse and explain things and for very few marks. A grade C is currently about 48% and a grade B is around 55% and its hard to even get to this level. Half my chem class failed their June mocks and most of my geog class don't get 3/4 marks on essays cause A levels are so hard. My bio teacher said in my first lesson in year 13, it's called advanced level for a reason. Everything is relevant. The bio text book is 500 pages in tiny print. It's killing everyone. Only take it if you need it as a particular subject for your uni course. Don't take it as a side quest.

    The key to doing well in A level biology is not taking anything for granted. Make sure you start even before you start preparing even before you enter sixth form school. That way, when you start officially, you are able to work at your pace because things get crazy very first. Also, ensure you have a target of finishing the syllabus at least two months before the actual exam. Practise as many questions as possible and study the techniques used in answering questions. Good luck to all you newbies.

    Great advice and video! I did Biology with English Lit, History and French and have to agree that it would be easier with maths and chemistry. I still got an A*, so it's definitely possible to do well without having maths and chemistry, but I think you have to be willing to put in a little more effort to understand some of the maths stuff - like the t-tests and chi squared. Also I feel like one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given on answering biology exam papers was to not be afraid to state the obvious. So often on the questions using graphs and tables, you can lose marks by not pointing out what seems too glaringly obvious and easy to merit a mention.

  • @warwickwagner4797
    @warwickwagner4797 6 лет назад +6

    I loved the video! I'm thinking about doing Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Further Maths for A levels, but it's a horrendous workload, and the video gave me a lot of information to think about :)

    • @MrBrandonHDGamer
      @MrBrandonHDGamer 6 лет назад +1

      Warwick Wagner 4 is honestly stressful, (I started with Maths, Further Maths, Economics and History) and although the workload is manageable. It led me to have to be working 24/7 which is not what I want. So therefore I dropped one (history). I’ve also heard that further maths isn’t really needed for medicine/science related courses, but obviously if you want to go into maths then it is essential

    • @btsniki113

      Thanks for the advice - Annoyingly I don't know whether I want to go into Maths or science at uni, so that makes the decision harder. Also I heard that for top universities Further Maths is an advantage (but never a requirement) for sciences, but I might be wrong.

    • @lururu
      @lururu 6 лет назад

      Warwick Wagner you're right about further maths not being a requirement; it just often means that the grade requirements are slightly lower for maths courses. for example, for my uni (uni of leeds) the normal requirements are AAA, but they are AAB/A*BB if you have a further maths A level or an A in further maths AS level. i haven't researched these unis but some of the really high unis like oxbridge might require it, but if you're not aiming as high as that, you should be fine not doing further maths. everything covered in further maths is gone through at university where necessary to put everyone on the same level, and same with statistics and mechanics because not everyone has done those either

    • @lewisbulled6764

Having such a dilema at the moment, im in year 13 at the moment and really struggling with biology! so much content and markschemes are vile! I work so hard for it but aren't really getting the grades I want (normally Ds and Cs). I know the grades really aren't awful or anything but im also just not happy cause I just feel constantly confused, and am only scraping passes in tests beacuse I spend all my time revising and learning the content (i struggle with the application of knowledge)! I completely agree with producing resources after each lesson at GCSE, but at A-Level using as many textbooks as possible and compiling all of the information together is so important due to the super picky mark schemes. You can’t really use textbooks though until you’ve finished an entire topic so (as stressful as it is) I 100% believe it better to leave all resources until after you’ve finished the full chapter. Otherwise you can end up with resources that aren’t explained in the way the mark scheme likes and subsequently drop marks. 💗💗

    I am not from the uk, but I had biology in a similar way compared to A levels, at least I think so. I'm from Germany and I did as a “Leistungskurs“. And I started studying it last year (finished second semester last week) aaaaaand I really like it still. After school I thought we had learned so much during the 2 1/2 years, but honestly just one semester is more... plus I had to take physics (two semesters), chemistry and math which makes the first year really hard. Looking forward to brighter times ahead (and more interesting lectures) was nice to see how different A levels is compared, even though there is also a great difference between school and uni here.

    You know what's annoying? In Germany we don't get to choose our A level subjects. (at least not in my type of school.) I currently involuntary have to suffer from Biology and Chemistry lessons, that I never wanted to in the first place. Ugh. Well whatever, I know I'm going to need my Biological and Chemistrical knowledge for studying Psychology at University but not all the topics we discussed. And as much as I love learning new things, I think it is such a waste of time for me to sit in these subjects when I could have another Psychology lesson instead.
    Anyways, I thank you for this video and the tips you give and just want to tell you that you are such an inspiration and I love you.

    Hard agree with the difficulty of a level biology maths questions!! As someone who did pretty average in gcse maths, the amount of maths and the complexity of it in a level bio was very shocking to me. It’s just something that you really need to put the work into in your own time, because for the most part your teachers just won’t have to time to dedicate in lessons to maths questions due to the sheer level of content that has to be covered. In my experience, the maths aspect of each topic was largely left to us to work through independently with maybe half an hour in the last lesson of the topic being spent on explaining those questions. Maths is a significant chunk of the a level so do make sure you’re solid on this as well as the content!!
