Join us for this virtual city walk in the city of Stirling, Scotland. Stirling is a city in central Scotland, 26 miles (42 km) north-east of Glasgow and 37 miles (60 km) north-west of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The market town, surrounded by rich farmland, grew up connecting the royal citadel, the medieval old town with its merchants and tradesmen, the bridge and the port. Located on the River Forth, Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. Proverbially it is the strategically important "Gateway to the Highlands".
It has been said that "Stirling, like a huge brooch clasps Highlands and Lowlands together".Similarly "he who holds Stirling, holds Scotland" is often quoted. Stirling's key position as the lowest bridging point of the River Forth before it broadens towards the Firth of Forth made it a focal point for travel north or south.
When Stirling was temporarily under Anglo-Saxon sway, according to a 9th-century legend, it was attacked by Danish invaders. The sound of a wolf roused a sentry, however, who alerted his garrison, which forced a Viking retreat. This led to the wolf being adopted as a symbol of the town as is shown on the 1511 Stirling Jug. The area is today known as Wolfcraig.
Even today the wolf appears with a goshawk on the council's coat of arms along with the recently chosen motto: "Steadfast as the Rock".
Once the capital of Scotland, Stirling is visually dominated by Stirling Castle. Stirling also has a medieval parish church, the Church of the Holy Rude, where, on 29 July 1567, the infant James VI was anointed King of Scots by the Bishop of Orkney with the service concluding after a sermon by John Knox. The poet King was educated by George Buchanan and grew up in Stirling. He was later also crowned King of England and Ireland on 25 July 1603, bringing closer the countries of the United Kingdom.
Modern Stirling is a centre for local government, higher education, tourism, retail, and industry. The mid-2012 census estimate for the population of the city is 36,440; the wider Stirling council area has a population of about 93,750.
One of the principal royal strongholds of the Kingdom of Scotland, Stirling was created a royal burgh by King David I in 1130. In 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, Stirling was granted city status.

I studied English and history at Stirling University in 2011. I miss the Baynestreet fam. And our nights at the Dusk Club. Still feel homesick. Best time of my life. ❤
What about the Fubar? 🤣

Hoy descubrí este canal. Amo Escocia, así que me encantaron los vídeos! Gracias!!! Saludos desde Argentina 🥰
Thank you so much for your kind comments ☺️ I’m really glad you are enjoying my videos.
Stirling's historic centre deserves to be rated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site yet in the 1980s the council wanted to futurise it.
The Royal Burgh's history is layered. There is Celtic & Roman Stirling, Dark Age Stirling, Early Medieval Stirling and Stirling of the High Middle Ages.
What other small city in Britain is clustered with so many iconic names from King Robert the Bruce to John Knox giant of the Reformation ?
What a beautiful city lived there in my student days for almost 4 years, still missing this amazing city. ❤
Couldn't agree more! I hope you enjoyed a little walk down memory lane? 😊
@@scottishjourneys very much enjoyed and recalled the memories of streets and places as well much appreciated.
Wow clean and calm 🥰🥰🥰
Great video
Greetings from Pacific

I am after watching this video. Scotland is a wee country , not muckle at all. I'd like to stay in Scotland. I am wanting to be Scottish. In Scotland you have beautiful kirks , snibs , rakes , and castles. How not ? I have a jotter.
Sorry,we have enough asylum seekers
What a pretty town!
It really is ☺️ so lucky to live near a city with so much history! Have a great day & thanks for watching
Love the history of the town. Looking forward to see more videos of Scotland and surrounding towns etc. From Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
Lots more coming up Patty 👍🏻
Yes.
Hi there! I am a new subscriber to this channel and could you please cover the country side view of scotland if you don't mind as nothing can ever beat the beauty of a village no matter where you live, you just have to love it and probably more so when it comes to UK.
Thanks in advance.
My last video was literally a walk in the Scottish Countryside 😆😆😆👍🏻 hope you managed to check it out? Many more of those walking videos to come 😉 thank you so much for subscribing 🙏🏻 means a lot 👍🏻
Stunning place with such rich history, As I watch and listen It makes me think of what good shape your in. If it was me you would hear heavy breathing and possibly gasping at the elevation, these May be odd things to notice but I've never seen any type of water hydrant for municipal fire fighting, Also thank you for the short pauses near the signs explaing your location so when I see things Of interest I can ask the Google's for more information,
Please take care and have a blessed day.
Hello 👋🏻 again David 😊 I feel very lucky to live such a short distance from so much history. There is a little heavy breathing occasionally 😆 but thank you anyway 👍🏻 we don’t have free standing hydrants like yours in the US, ours are covered by manhole covers on the street. Happy Holidays to you when it comes!
👍👍👍
amazing video - see you!!!
Thank you! ☺️
Wonderfull❤
Thank you! 😊
I'm looking to stay in Edinburgh. But I would like to get around Scotland. So also going to Glasgow. Now Stirling is on my list😊. Anywhere else to go and see by train or bus. Thank you
This is why I make these videos Lucy. So people can see parts of Scotland that they didn’t know about ☺️ really happy my walking tour helped! It depends on how long you are staying for? But here are a few other suggestions. St.Andrews, Inverness, Oban, Skye. If you have any other questions, please leave another comment & I’ll get back to you 👍🏻 have a great trip! 🙂
If you are interested in the landscapes i'd recommend checking out loch Lomond and 100% Glenn Coe, the cities in Scotland aren't incredibly impressive compared to our nature.
The Isle of Arran is also beautiful if you are into your nature although I'd plan ahead for these places so you can get the best experience and see the hidden gems
Aberdeen, Inverness, Skye, Glenkoe, You must see 🤩🤩🤩👍🏼
I’m looking for accommodation in Stirling in a shared apartment please I will really appreciate all the help
شكرا
You are very welcome 🙂 hope you enjoyed it?
Is there much to do in the evening there, like restaurants, bars, entertainment, music?
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes is the answer 😆 lots of bars & great restaurants (Brea) being one of the best ones in the city centre 👍🏻 the Albert Halls have live music performances nearly every week, as does the Tolbooth, which showcases poetry nights, plays, live performances etc 🙂
What a picturesque location ? What is the name of this area and roads too ?
The name of the area in my thumbnail is Port Street, in the city of Stirling.
Please am coming in January can you do something about the weather and what you should do
It’s great you are coming in January 🙂 I don’t make content like that on my channel, but there are a lot of wonderful videos on RUclips dealing with what to wear in Scotland 😊 hope you have a great time!
It looks nice. Is it a nice place to live ?
There are some really nice places within Stirlingshire 🙂 it’s a wonderfully historic city. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
@@scottishjourneys I'm glad there are still nice places in the UK.
