I love this kind of photography. Chasing mist can be stressful, I much prefer hunting for light and colour, it allows you to slow right down and enjoy the moment.
Hi Stuart (yep I have my coffee as I’m typing!) and to everyone watching - Stuart is an amazing teacher, it was without question a half day elite masterclass and for my first pro workshop Stuart was my first and only choice. I went back the day after you Stuart! (this video) to put into practice what you had taught me and it was like all the lights had come on composition wise, just need that laptop! 😂 till the next time 😁 🙌
Another very informative and interesting video. Thanks for mentioning the Black Mist Filter and Kase Polarizer, it is always nice to see what you used to capture the photos in the video. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing them. Best Regards
Hello Stuart, thanks for a very enjoyable video. In the last image, l find the tree in question works better because it's grounded and becomes part of the scene, whereas the other image it becomes a bar-like intrusion. The colours are here in Cornwall and light winds but the light continues to be so flat! I've put a lot of things on hold, so l can spring into action should conditions improve!
Always good watching your approach and thought process when looking for a composition and thr practical realisation that sometimes the conditions will not play ball for that 'keeper' image!
Lovely to see the autumnal colours as I am currently enjoying a road trip in New Zealand in spring. I loved how the branches were acting if presenting the beautiful colours to us in your earlier composition....the image with the light with Andy is my favourite from both
It's been a strange Autumn. Just returned from a weekend in Dartmoor and the tree's were all in various stages of colour. We found Oaks that had lost half their leaves and what was left were a mixture of dead or still green. We also found Oaks that were still fully green as in summer and Beech Tree's in similar stages. I assume due to the poor summer and mild start to winter. I'm guessing a cold spell will really force the colours to appear. I do struggle to prevent overlap in the branches. It's very challenging. You certainly managed to achieve it
Hi Stuart, another interesting and enjoyable video, thanks for another grand day out. I know I usually say this, but again super images, and as you say its very nearly peak Autumn for colour. Keep up the good work, and all the best to you and yours.
Thanks for the recommendation Stuart - much appreciated. Lovely images despite the flat light, and I agree that sunlight playing on all the scenes makes all the difference. Take it easy and all the best with your workshops.
I always enjoy your video efforts. Nice pace, nice content and best of success with the new location for your gallery. Sympathies for your trials Stuart, good to see you keeping on keeping on.
Here in missouri, USA all we have had are sunny days with 25-30 mph wind with 40-45mph gusts, hard to get anything decent but didn't stop me from trying, lol
What a lovely place to be with a camera, the brightness that you managed to control on the ferns were really well captured, and you got some really nice autumn pictures, well done and thanks for sharing them with us!
The light makes such a difference, Stu, along with nailing the composition. I still look back at an image I took with you in Borrowdale Woods and think I would like to shoot it again, as I didn't quite nail the focus first time around and it niggles me everytime I look at it.
Some lovely images there mate. Couldn't believe the vibrancy of the autumn colours this weekend when I came up. As you say the birches have all but gone, but the oaks and the beeches were looking stunning
Hi Stuart, I remember this woodland well from the workshop last year and an enjoyable day it was. Love the compositions and use of colour and light. Great work. You make it look much easier than it is.
Enjoyed that Stuart. I gotta be honest, I wasn’t expecting the backlit scene to trump the flat light shot at the end. I thought the contrast would have been awful with all that added colour of autumn, but how wrong was I! It was a stunner. As for the fluff, it’s better than a bogey. Be grateful for that 👍
Well caught Stuart, worthwhile time out in Nature., enjoying the Pubcast too. though there are some strange beers being drunk, may as well use straws lol.
Enjoyed this Stuart and interesting reading the comments about the 2 versions of the final image along with your own opinion and insights about the composition you lined up on both days. Also a nice surprise to see your latest newsletter in my email this morning, so will look forward to sitting down with a cuppa and having a read through it today
Have to agree Stuart, 'yesterdays image' was the better shot. The light in it added more warmth and highlighted the colours more, I think. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
Great video, really nice images, must admit for autumnal woodland shots i much prefer flat light to make the most of the colours. Of course.. a bit of mist always helps.
It wasn’t Saturday was it? Fog was forecast till 11am at Grasmere and Rydal, got there at 9am and it had lifted. Another cracking video and lovely images bud 👍
Yesterday's image is miles better, but also the dead looking tree has a base . The "today" image doesn't show its base so that for me makes the yesterday image again much better. For me woodland images shot in flat light are generally, well flat. Woodland photography imho is much better with dappled patchy light highlighting branches and leaves. Colour saturation can be an issue but that's controllable in post anyway.
Cheers mate, it’s a filter a few companies make, mainly for videographers though it has its uses in woodland environments to soften highlights. Bit like orton effect
Very nice Stuart. Some lovely images there. We’ve had a bit of fog around these parts this Autumn, but mostly on days when I’m at work and unable to take advantage! Out of interest, do you tend to sell many woodland images, or are these more for your personal collection?
@@StuartMcGlennon great video Stuart, which of the 2 black mist do you use? I tried a KF 1/4 black mist but perhaps the conditions werent quite right. Thanks Andrew
Stuart, I think I prefer the image taken in the flat light. There is a greater sense of depth and it has a more painterly quality. I feel the light in the second image is a little too much and a bit too strong - would have been better had it just highlighted a small part of the scene rather than most of the scene. Lovely all the same.
Cheers, funny how we all see things differently, I don’t mind the strong light as it helps keep the shadow areas in the back of the image dark, without that light it looks a bit two dimensional in the flatter version to my eye. In an ideal world mist sorts this without the strong light.
Autumn is gone too quickly. About two weeks ago I went on a sunset walk around my home, expecting nothing, and the leaves were just aflame on the trees and bushes, especially ivy and bramble. Now it's mostly gone already.
Autumn...Time of the year some animals are busy fattening up. Preparing for the " sleep " through the winter. Eat anything....Come spring....The planet begins a " born" New " generation " lives on the trees. The colors rising up out of a slowly softening ground. And the animals....A wake....Bears....Very hungry, some with young, very hungry and VERY aggressive. Here in America....Two seasons to be extra careful when treking the country side.

It was funny and nice meeting you at Wast Water this afternoon Stuart 😀

Light is everything as you have demonstrated beautifuly in this video,, yesterdays photograph is a stunner.
Thanks Mark 👍

Headless chicken! 🤣🤣 That's me, too! 🖖
PS I'd go for 14:09 framing. just like that, a tad higher.
Yesterdays image. A great lesson in planning compositions and either waiting or going back in various lighting conditions
On “today” and “yesterday” question I find both appealing, just in different ways. Glad to hear the old oaks are treating you well 👍

The colours are superb! Some nice photos regardless of the lighting conditions Stuart.
Cheers Trevor
Great video Stuart stunning photos with amazing colours 😊

Hey Stuart, nice shots and some realy good tips too i think. Thank you. Woodlandphotography is soo challenging!!

Lovely to meet you mate take care
@ Likewise buddy, and the gallery looks FANTASTIC! Great job, and the best of fortune with the venture
Definitely prefer the lighted version of your third image. Beautiful!
👍👍

Thanks Stuart. They look super locations for autumn woodland and very nice shots too. All the best and hope to catch you soon 😊

Cheers mate yeah here and round Grasmere in particular are very vibrant. Forecast for the next 10 days is very promising for fog / low winds 🤞
The beeches are awesome this year in West Cumbria and the red squirrels are coming down out of the tops

Haha that’s made me laugh! I’m sure I’ll have a bogey moment at some point
@ Been there sadly and nobody said a thing 😆
A great watch with Stunning Shots 🙂
Cheers Gary
Great autumn colours and well captured Stuart

Thanks Iain I stick to soft drinks mainly, I’m either out on the lash or not at all!
Lovely colours Stuart, hope to be in the area next fingers crossed.
Thanks Colin
I recognise that woodland 😀. A nice couple of images 👌

I give in with woodlands i just cant see it like you stuart, make it look easy you do 😊
👍
Nice one mate, very opportune. Catch up at the end of the week.
Thanks mate, I’ll be running a workshop all week so you’ll likely not see me though your calendar will be in the shop with my mum
@@StuartMcGlennon May bump into you on our travels, or in one of the pubs in the evening. Were you in the woods by Surprise View in the vlog btw?
Some fantastic compositions
Very good. Top notch photos and content
Hey! you are driving on the wrong side of the road. 😉 As a Swede, I always get hiccups watching left-hand traffic 😂
I like the flat light.

Cheers mate, I don’t mind either types though for that shot I found it a bit too flat, made the background a bit messy with no shadows
@StuartMcGlennon good point, it does illustrate how much light can dramatically influence an image.
Great video, could you tell me what stop your black mist filter is please

Now then, what's that new tripod ? Seems to take a very excellent photograph 😃
Cheers Simon nah I’ve had it while its from a company I need to do a review vid for, had it since January
Looks like the self levelling head would be ideal for your panos. Something I'm interested in. Cheers 🍻

It's odd to see you driving on the left side of the road. In New Mexico we drive on what's left of the road.
