Fun fact: The name 'Bung Karno' is actually the name of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno. 'Bung' means older brother. Soekarno was essentially the older brother of the people of Indonesia as he was the one guiding Indonesia to independence, the founding father who read the proclamation of independence letter. The reason why the KRI Bung Karno-369 is called Bung Karno is because it's a tradition for Indonesian warships to be named after a national Hero -- People who had fought for the independence of Indonesia, even way before the idea of the Indonesian state was brought.
Another is 'Bung Tomo', real name Sutomo. He was the leader of the Indonesian military during the revolution. He was the one who led the people of Surabaya to fight against the Allied forces and the NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) -- The exiled colonial government of Netherlands.

Indonesia is about to explode. Their economy is about to hit a golden age because they're actually growing a healthy middle class and the labor costs are 1/5th of China. The GDP cleared a trillion dollars in 2023. Other asian companies are fighting over eachother to get start ups there (Japan, meanwhile, is investing in the Philippines for similar reasons). They're also the highest producer of nickel which is more important now than ever and the US can't really get its own. The government wisely banned the sale of raw nickel so the countries interested in it had to pay and install the refinement facilities. The next highest producer of nickel is the Philippines but they aren't even close.

Indonesia’s ships on average are smaller than Korea’s or Japan’s, though. It still needs longer-ranged major surface combatants with a range of 8-10,000 miles, which it currently lacks (although the government seems to understand that this is a major procurement priority in the coming years, and has probably made it one of the requirements in the new large frigate prohect). On the far other end of the scale, it also needs to put much more funding and attention into small boats and unmanned vessels for asymmetric warfare against much stronger naval powers. Not to mention a massive unfulfilled need for logistical sealift capacity for the rapid redeployment of ground troops to domestic trouble spots.

Indonesia's Navy is nowhere near as well placed as shown here. The big problems facing Indonesia's Navy is a quantitative lack of quality along with budgetary constraints. Here's how: (I will cover procurement later in the comment)
    1. Indonesia has 7 frigates. Of these, 2 are of the Damen-built Sigma-design (the Martadinata-class). The remaining five are second-hand Dutch Van Speijk-class frigates bought from the Netherlands in the late 1980s. The Van Speijks are license built variants of the 1960s Leander-class frigate, and the current age of the five ships left in service (out of the six purchased) ranges between 56 and 58 years. They are well past their use-by dates, and while the ships do pack a powerful punch, they are hopelessly obsolete for the present era.
    2. Indonesia has 25 corvettes. While this is a respectable number on paper, there are problems here as well. Of the 25 ships, 17 are of the Parchim- and Fatahillah-classes. The Parchims were purchased in the mid-1990s, and are second hand ex-East German ships. The Fatahillahs date back to the late 1970s. These ships are all 39-45 years old, and are of dubious use today besides immediate coastal defence. Again, these ships are well past their useful lives. Of the 8 remaining corvettes, 4 are excellent ships of the Diponegoro-class (a different variant of the Damen Sigma-design), while the 3 Bung Tomo-class corvettes are perfectly respectable and capable, though slowly aging ships. The last corvette, the locally built Bung Karno, is more of an OPV than a corvette. Intended as a presidential yacht, the corvette has no SAM systems fitted, and has just one 40mm gun and two 20mm guns, which makes it less well armed than OPVs half its size.
    3. Indonesia's OPV force in relatively modern and very capable. Of the 23 ships in their possession, all but 2 are relatively modern and have 15-20 years left in them. It is just the last 2 ships (ex-East German Kondor-class minesweepers purchased in the 1990s and converted to OPVs) that are antiquated and past their retirement age.
    4. Indonesia's fleet of attack craft has two sides to it. Of the 47 attack craft (that are above 250 tons in displacement), 32 are relatively modern and capable, though the remaining 15 are older ships that should have been retired by now, or are at the point of retirement. However, there is a case to be made that small attack craft do have a lot of disadvantages in modern naval combat. Still, the 32 modern attack craft have sufficient range to act as OPVs, which makes them somewhat dual-purpose, and gives Indonesia, atleast on paper, a maximum of 55 OPVs.
    5. Mine warfare vessels are another area of concern. Indonesia has 8 MCMVs, though 4 of these are ex-East German Kondor-class minesweepers. These ships are over 50 years old each, and were purchased in 1994. 2 of the remaining four are aging Tripartite-class MCMVs that are coming up for replacement, with only two modified Frankenthal-class MCMVs forming the modern MCM capability of the Indonesian Navy, though the Tripartites can be modernised.
    7. Indonesia's submarines are another interesting case. Of their 4 submarines, 3 are of the Nagapasa-class, which are essentially German Type 209-1400 submarines built in South Korea. These 3 boats are all modern, having entered service in 2017-21. The last submarine is the older Type 209-1300 submarine Cakra, which dates back to 1981. This boat is at the end of its life, and is not sent out to sea much nowadays, especially after the loss of the KRI Nanggala (Indonesia's other Type 209-1300) at sea with all hands in 2021.
    8. Amphibious assault ships are another area posing a challenge. Indonesia has 5 Makassar-class LPDs that are very good ships, and 3 similar scaled-down ships are used as hospital ships, but can theoretically be refitted to LPDs if need be. As for the rest, of the 24 LSTs in their inventory, 9 are modern ships that are less than 10 years old. 14 others are either ex-East German Hoyersweda-class LSTs, or a locally-built design, but these 14 ships all date back to the 1970s and 1980s. The last ship is an LST built in Japan in 1961. Still, the fact that a number of navies maintain very old LSTs in service shows that these ships can fulfill their purpose even after so many years in service, so that helps the Indonesian Navy.
    9. Fleet auxiliaries (including Replenishment Oilers, Training Ships, Survey Ships, Troopships, Tugs, and general auxiliary ships) are generally in good shape and mostly relatively modern with a few exceptions. One area of concern here is Indonesia's tugboat fleet, where 8 out of 14 tugs are over 50 years old.
Coming to the proposed modernisation and associated acquisition projects:
    1. Frigates and corvettes: Of the 32 ships in this category presently in service, 22 are extremely old and obsolete. Indonesia has, at various points, planned to acquire 2 Type 31 frigates (the Red-White frigates), 6 FREMM-IT frigates, 2 Maestrale-class frigates, and 3 Pohang-class corvettes. Of these, the Type 31 frigates are under construction, and the Pohang-class corvettes should be transferred by South Korea starting in 2024. There has also been some talk of procuring 4 Mogami-class frigates and 2 Bremen-class frigates, though these haven't been heard of for some time. The orders for the FREMMs and Maestrale-class frigates have not been placed yet, and only a MOU and agreement has been signed. Overall, this gives Indonesia 5 ships definitely, another 8 possible ships, and upto 6 additional ships in this category, assuming the entire procurement goes through. Granted, the incoming ships are far more capable than the older ships, so the future looks bright here. (Or does it? I'll cover this shortly.)
    2. Attack craft: Indonesia has plans to build 12 more Sampari-class, 2 more Klewang-class, and 4 ships of a new design. These will replace the older attack craft in their inventory, but the case for their relevance as anything more than uparmed OPVs is a matter of debate. Still, the Indonesian Navy is set here.
    3. MCMVs: The four remaining Kondor-class MCMVs are extremely old. Indonesia has some plans to modernise the two Tripartite-class vessels, but no new procurements are in the pipeline, which may make this an issue in case of a conflict, since with such a large coastline, MCM duties become extremely important.
    4. Submarines: These are an area where the Indonesian Navy is doing reasonably well. The Cakra is at the point of retirement, but the Indonesians have made plans to acquire 2-3 new submarines. These will either be more Nagapasa-class (Type 209-1400) boats, or perhaps Scorpene-class submarines. Assuming this purchase goes through, Indonesia's submarine arm has a bright future.
    5. Amphibious assault ships and auxiliaries: Both these arms are in decent shape, and assuming the Indonesians are able to properly maintain existing ships and do not lose any ships to unfortunate accidents (they lost two Hoyerswerda-class LSTs to accidents in 2013 and 2020), they should do well for the foreseeable future. The only point of concern here is tugboats, but some replacements for those are in the pipeline.
Now, that seems all well and good, but there is one major challenge: Money. Indonesia's Navy (and Air Force, for that matter) face significant budgetary constraints. Indonesia purchased over two-thirds of East Germany's former Navy in the 1990s, and all those Soviet-era warships are now presenting a block obsolescence issue for Indonesia. Simply put, the money to replace all of these ships is a hard-find. The other issue that Indonesia's Navy is facing is a major logistical issue. The Indonesian Navy uses ships from many sources, and since each type of ship is relatively small in number, maintenance becomes a headache.
This can be seen, very exceptionally, in the Indonesian Air Force, for instance. The Indonesian Air Force has some 108 fighters of 6 different types from 5 different nations. Furthermore, they have 42 Rafales on order, which will give them 150 fighters of 7 different types from 6 different nations. That is a maintenance nightmare. Moreover, with small orders for different types of aircraft, a lot of potential savings aren't realised.
The proposed acquisitions of the Indonesian Navy present a similar issue. Atleast for frigates and corvettes, the Indonesians are planning to acquire a decent number of ships in small packets from different nations. That will not only make logistics and maintenance more complicated, but will also cost more, since bulk savings aren't realised.
As for Indonesia being the second strongest Navy in Asia and fourth in the world, well, that is laughable. No offence intended, but the World Directory of Modern Military Warships is a flawed database in many aspects. For instance, warship ages are often recorded incorrectly (that is, for a second hand warship, some ship ages show their entire service career with both owners, while others show age with present owner only). There is no denying that Indonesia has a strong Navy. That they do, and the Indonesian Navy is by far the strongest Navy in South-East Asia. However, they are far behind other Asian powerhouse navies like Japan, India, and South Korea, and are nowhere near China. There are better sources to refer for a measure of naval strength.

@@diditsuhendra238 Who am I? An ordinary citizen who has been studying naval technology and history for almost two decades. If I did offend you with my analysis, I apologise. However, the Indonesian Navy has the potential to be a regional powerhouse. At present, however, they face a lot of challenges as I highlighted. I am not jealous to see the Indonesian Navy in the Top 4 or any other ranking, for that matter. I stand by my stance that
the WDMMW is not exactly an optimal source. Heck, they are still missing ships commissioned in 2022 in their 2024 listings. That doesn't exactly paint a very good picture, does it?
You asked for data, so here it is. I'll cover the age of some of the ships, along with some major weapon systems. If you require any more data, let me know, and I'll see if I can find it.
      1. Ahmad Yani- / Van Speijk-class frigates: The five ships still in service are between 56 and 58 years old (based on their original commissioning), and have spent between 34 and 38 years in Indonesian service. The latter number itself is on the upper end of the service life of most frigates. These ships are armed with four P-800 or C-802 SSMs, a 3" gun, and 6 ASW torpedo tubes. While a respectable armament, the ships are grossly underarmed by modern standards. Most sensor systems are also quite old now.
      2. Fatahillah-class corvettes: The ships are between 44 and 45 years old. They carry a Bofors 4.7" inch (the last active ships with those guns today), 6 ASW torpedo tubes, a Bofors ASW rocket launcher, and possibly 4 Exocet AShMs. The Exocets have possibly been removed due to the obsolescence, and the ASW rocket launcher system is beyond obsolete now.
      3. Kapitan Pattimura- / Parchim-class corvettes: The 14 ships remaining in service are between 39 and 43 years old, and have spent between 28 and 31 years in Indonesian service. The ships have twin 57mm gun turret, 2 RBU-6000 ASW rocket launchers, and 4-6 ASW torpedo tubes. While these ships aren't necessarily antiquated by age, they haven't received any significant modernisation since the mid-2000s. These ships are very much at the end of their life.
      4. Kondor-class OPVs: These ships are 51-52 years old, and have spent 30 years in Indonesian service. While purchased from East Germany as minesweepers, two of the Kondors had their minehunting equipment break down beyond repair, and have been reclassified as OPVs. They are still capable of coastal patrol, but are extremely old and only carry 2-3 25mm guns, which make them utterly incapable of defending themselves in times of war.
      5. Attack craft: The Mandau-class and the older Lurssen FPB-57 attack craft have spent between 30 and 45 years in service. Considering their size, that is an extremely long service life. The Mandau-class possibly carries 2 AShMs today (the older Exocets have been removed), and the older FPB-57s have, at most, ASW torpedo tubes, which makes them relatively unsuitable as attack craft. Only the 4 newest FPB-57s carry 2-4 AShMs, and date back to the early 2000s, which means they still have a decade or so left.
      6. Kondor-class MCMVs: In addition to the Kondor-class OPVs, there are a further 4 Kondors still serving as MCMVs. These ships are 51-52 years old, having spent 30 years in Indonesian service. Again, these ships only carry 3 25mm guns each along with 24 mines or depth charges. The equipment itself is decent, but the age of the ships would be a major concern, considering that none of these Kondors has ever received a significant modernisation.
      7. Tripartite-class MCMVs: The two Tripartite-class MCMVs are 36 years old, which still gives them about a decade in service. The equipment carried is also fairly modern.
      8. Type 209-1300 submarines: The Cakra is extremely old, dating back to 1981. Moreover, considering that the loss of the Nanggala was also blamed to her modernisation by South Korea (a refit Cakra also received), Cakra is already well past her usable life, and short of any major emergencies, doesn't put to sea anyways. On the other hand, the three Type 209-1400 boats (the Nagapasa-class) are in good shape, and are also very modern.
      9. LSTs: 11 of the LSTs in service are of the East German Hoyerswerda-class. These ships are between 44 and 47 years old, having spent 29-31 years in Indonesian service. The ships are in decent shape and not too old. However, considering that one of the two ships lost was when the ship was hit by 4 metre high waves, this does raise some concern for the remaining ships. A similar story exists for the 3 Teluk Semangka-class LSTs. The last LST, the Teluk Amboina, is essentially a Japanese-built LST 542-class ship from 1961. She is antiquated by any stretch of the definition.
Now, I gave this analysis because it is also important to know what challenges the Indonesian Navy faces. The modernisation program is ambitious, and if completely successful, will transform the Indonesian Navy into a South-East Asian powerhouse.

Of course, compared to South Korea, Japan and Australia, Indonesia is still far behind because the flagship we have is only an OPV ship which is classified as a frigate, Meanwhile, Japan and South Korea are dominated by destroyers and several LHDs, and now Japan will even have aircraft carriers

well you're very right, our navy is very weak, but modernization is on going right now. The FMP Frigate that planned to be launch next year can be classified as heavy frigate with displacement close to an older destroyer. Don't forget with the ongoing acquisition of Thaon Di Revel class PPA from Italy, which if happened most likely will be use by the Navy and will be classified as Frigate. For Submarine, well the Nagapasa class from South Korea is a shit with huge problems, left us with probably only 2 active submarines. That's why we canceled the second batch of Nagapasa class and move to Scorphene instead. As right now, the deal with scorphene is almost complete.

In my opinion as Indonesian, we Indonesia must have powerful navy without any negotiation needed, aside of Nort Natuna Sea accident that China claiming indonesian EEZ, Indonesia have massive coastline the size of entire Europe to protect, and knowing Indonesia like to be neutral (not choosing Anyside) Indonesia need to be strong to make sure that we didn't experience being bully and humiliated by foreign power like what happened on 2018 - 2020 when China try to claim Indonesian water and EEZ.

You blurted out everything about Indonesia in the first 30 seconds of your presentation and you're absolutely spot on.
We don't feel there's a need to pay taxes to our government that's practically running this country as if it's a family owned enterprise.. I am not talking about a specific president because it's been the common practice that whoever becomes president, his/her relatives benefit from it, including their friends to add extra credit. This happens everywhere but double/quadruple down here in Indonesia.
Corruption is immense and the people are too dense to do anything about it. If you're a foreign power thinking of getting a decent piece of real estate nearly free of charge???
Invade Indonesia, now. This country has no practical defense, it's own arsenal fail them during training practices because there's no funding for maintenance (well technically there was but corruption is always the higher order before anything else) and patriotism isn't that high. well maybe in the easily brainwashed lower class but they can't do anything after all.. meaningless.
This country is perhaps the only country in the world that's better off being colonialized. Fun fact, the infrastructure that we have today would never have existed without the Dutch colonialization and WE. ARE. STILL. USING. IT. EVEN. WHEN. IT. IS. WAY. TOO. OBSOLETE.
The current president developed some useful infrastructure.. some of them are good some of them are legit questionable but for $6 of political campaign, an idiot would willingly burn it down and complaint "Why are you building us infrastructure?"
Invade Indonesia. it's easy and very rewarding.

14 knots, for a frigqte?? Shouldn't it do at least 25 knots? One thing needed for a warship is fairly high manoeuvre speed, this enables the vessel to make it a more difficult moving target and it also improves offensive capabilities as the warship closes more quickly with the surface or underwater target. So I would say, speed is still important for a warship. Slow warships are generally less effective.
