Short tribute to the Thumpers

  • A photo & video tribute to the Hampshire & Berkshire class 205 units. I first met up with these units in, I guess, the end of the school summer holidays in 1957 when for no preplanned reason I and some friends turned up on our bikes at Itchen Abbas station. We were told to sit down & not cause any fuss whereupon, to our amazement, 1101 & 1102 rolled in. Dignatories got out & shook hands with the station staff(one), got back in & the units rolled off!
I later used them regularly, travelling to work in Southampton from Winchester, and I have to admit that they didn't then fill me with much enthusiasm.
However, some of them lasted well, and we went to Sussex & Kent in September 2003 to photo & video them (more enthasis on the photography hence lack of much panning), not then knowing that several would survive into preservation. It was perhaps fitting that 205001 (1101) was the first & last unit that I saw outside of preservation.
The picture of 1106 was scanned from an old scratched negative of a photo that I took with a Brownie box-camera. Green-liveried 205029 was written off following the accident at Cowden.

Fantastic video - probably the best for sound complete with the cooling fan drive whine! Not your fault but the only sound missing was that of the traction motors but then their sound can only be caught when the train is travelling at low speed on lowish power (otherwise the engine drowns out their sound), Fell in love with these units when I would use them on the Basingstoke to Reading line in the 1980s. I remember the engine on one of the units would occasionaly stall when about to pull away.

Really enjoyed that, thanks for uploading. I was geographically remote from these units when in service, but have sampled the preserved example at the East Lancs Railway, they are like no other unit I've been on, such a fantastic sound!

Nice video! Model manufacturers as Bachmann or Hornby could shed some Thumper in OO scale. I'm watching. I'm watching. And looking I'm from afar.Imagine who is from UK and like these models how should be expecting.

I liked the video except for the music on the intro. Might just be me, but it seemed pointless. Except for that, nice to see what the Connex Thumpers were like, I missed out on those. Only discovered the joys of Thumpers last week with the 450s in Northern Ireland. Fantastic little beasts, I shall have to book onto the next 1001 tour I can!
