Hey Whitney, I'm 28 and I want to inform you that I bought my first ever Floss 2 days ago because of you and I'm on my way to my 3 Days Flossing strike also because of your amazing videos and also been using tongue scraper also because of you advices , Thank you very much and I'm planning to visit a Dentist for the first time since I was 10 years old
This comment made me want to cry. I haven’t been to the dentist since I was about 10 as well. I am 29. I had a horrible incident that happened at a dentist office that made me not go back. I went this week for the first time and was extremely nervous just for them to tell me I had extremely healthy gums and teeth. No cavities or anything. I will be getting Invisalign’s next. Don't brush too hard , it's a tool you only want to use the tips of the brushes and oscillate ( gentle rotation or back forth) smallest amount of pressure, let the tips of brush do work.
Tip: Therabreath mouthwashes work perfectly for me and even remove morning breath. Also what @afterthought3341 said about not brushing hard is good advice from my research. If your breath needs an extra kick, can add a drop of essential oil
Honestly, I just like the "fresh" feeling after using mouthwash. You get some of that with brushing/flossing but the mouthwash just makes it feel like you've really done some work... even if the mouthwash itself isn't the one doing it.
I use a flouride mouthwash because the recommendation from my dentist was to rinse with water after brushing, so I use the flouride mouthwash after to help with my sensitivity. (It is definitely working, I used to be in extreme pain when drinking cold water.)
Floss, rinse with Cloysys.30 seconds. Brush, flouride roothpaste.Rinse with listerine (not water)30-60 seconds, spit it out and then rinse with ACT 1 minute. Done. Sparkly, smooth, clean teeth.
Also if the antiseptic one is acidic and you brush right after using it, you will erode your enamel, as the acid weakens the enamel. It takes quite a few minutes to restore the pH in your mouth and for your enamel to be back to normal. That's why you should not brush right after having orange juice or other acidic foods.
If you look at a ph chart, the majority of the on the shelf mouthwashes sold in stores are as bad as soda. It's really quite surprising to see how bad some of the products are that are "approved" by the ADA.
Yeah a ton are acidic, but I know Carifree and Therabreath are pretty alkaline. Not only that, but a lot of them contain alcohol which causes dry mouth. And a lot of anti-bacterial mouthwashes have the ability to disrupt the oral microbiome balance as they kill BOTH bad and good bacteria. There's quite a few academic studies done comparing alcohol and non-alcohol mouthwash, and each time alcohol one wins in terms of killing more bacteria. Which is logical. In terms of cavities, not sure.
@@lizzy4827 I read the Medical journal study showing that Listerine cool mint (alcohol) did reduce gingivitis more than flossing. I'm not saying don't floss but string can't get to places that the antiseptic one can get to. The trick is to use it quickly then rinse it out with a non alcohol PH balanced one like ACT zero. Two studies showed that the antimicrobial action of Listerine Antiseptic mouthwash is at least as good as flossing in improving gingival health and plaque reduction, especially in hard to reach areas of the mouth.
The dental 'industry' would rather get you in that chair every 3 or 4 months for an expensive and invasive deep periodontal cleaning than see you benefit from an at home therapeutic mouthwash. 😒 Sadly, in the US, that's the way it is.
Respectfully disagree about the need for mouthwashes. For years I could never stop the buildup around my front teeth despite constant brushing and flossing. I started a regimen of mouthwashes before and after brushing. Within weeks the problem was gone. Amazing that no dentist ever recommended this to me, and my hygienist simply said "it's just the chemical makeup of your mouth." Anyway, I think the need for scraping/cleanings is behind me. It's been almost a year and my teeth are cleaner than ever.
I have the crest pro health clinical mouthwash. This one does not have fluoride , but it's based on hydrogen peroxide. It claims to prevent plaque growth and reverse gingivitis. As you said, it won't remove plaque. The only way to do that is with mechanical brushing. What would be the best approach to using this particular mouthwash? My approaches to wake up, brush, wait, Have breakfast and then waterpik followed by the. Mouthwash. The advantage is that I have clean teeth after breakfast and I also have an anti plaque treatment. What is your opinion about the usefulness of this approach versus just brushing only in the morning.
How come some oral care products are shown to have serious disadvantages, like the ones you described associated with alcoholic mouthwashes, but they're still "ADA Accepted" or whatever? I know it's probably impossible to try and put Listerine out of business at this point, but if the ADA didn't endorse their alcoholic products, then maybe fewer people would buy them. I just know almost every average consumer, including myself, trusts that that seal is granted in good conscience with the science to back it up.
This is one of those vidoes that I’m sure helped a lot of people. In my case(Romania) supermarkets are full of mouthwashes that contain alcohol(like 90% of them). It’s good to know that they’re not good for us. Videos like this are necessary for the community. We might have an amazing dentist, she/he can’t have time for everything during those sessions. It really helped me that I could get information from a real doctor, in my free time. 😌
I stopped using mouthwash a year ago because My dentist told me that using mouthwash will make ones tongue lose its taste after a while. But watching your video now makes me feel like adding mouthwash to my routine again. Is it true that mouthwash will cause the tongue to lose its taste overtime?
Great video Whitney. I use act total care what my dentist told me to use and now I only drink water and sometimes juice. I stopped drinking soda snd now past few years I have way less cavities. I have listening too but I like to only use that when my gums bleed before I brush to kill bacteria if that works lol
Um…random query: is it ok to brush your teeth with peroxide and a tiny bit of baking soda, or corn starch? Asking for a friend that can’t stand the taste of any type of mint in their mouth…
I really really wish you were my RDH, and not because you are very cute, but because you are clearly very thorough and knowledgeable. God Bless and take care.
I can’t use mouthwashes as they give me canker sores/ulcers. I brush twice a day before breakfast and before bead, tongue scrape and floss. I also chew sugar free gum after every meal as well as rinse with water.
Question… I’ve been using listerine almost everyday since high school and I’m in my 30’s now. I’ve never had a cavity or any dental issues of any kind, should I stop using it?
She mentioned if you don't have any oral problems with your mouthwash you should be fine. If it was me, I would switch to an alcohol free mouthwash to be safe
a little late to this, but I HAVE A QUESTION: if i use mouthwash prior to brushing, do i need to wait 30 minutes before brushing my teeth? because usually after using mouthwash you have to wait 30 minutes before eating and drinking, I was wondering if the same applies to using toothpaste after mouthwash??
I thought stannous flouride also causes staining. There was a class action against one of the major brands for a whitening line they introduced with stannous flouride which stained people's teeth instead of whitening them.
Can you do a video of the Harvard study that showed oral b floss has cancer causing properties? Very interested in your opinion on this. This is the floss they give away for free at all dentists. My dentist acted like I was crazy when I brought it up.
ohhh yes I've heard about this! long story short -- there were several limitations in this study, including being unable to measure other things that people use throughout the day that also increases the level of "PFAS" in one's body -- such using non-stick pans and stuff... anywho! here is a direct quote from the study: "Our understanding of sources of PFAS exposure remains incomplete". but totally GREAT video topic -- I'll definitely consider making a video about this with more info :) :) :) thank you! and here's the article if you want to read more about it until I make the video :) www.nature.com/articles/s41370-018-0109-y
Thanks for your videos and the great information. Everything you say agrees with what my dentist says so I feel safe taking your advice. Have a great day! One thing I always wonder about is who does the dentist see to get their teeth done?😀
:) thanks for watching! for dental professionals, usually we clean each other's teeth :) and for dentist -- if they have colleagues, or their dental friends :)
She's educating people on how to choose a mouthwash. She mentioned her other video: "What's The Best Mouthwash?" Then at 5:50 she says there's recommendations in the description.
@rie9823 - One can always wing it if they want. It's hard to just recommend shit, because these brands have a thousand different very similar mouthwashes, at slightly different price-points, and the video ideally needs to be applicable in the future, rather than being partially dated once new products come out. Unless it's a video specifically dedicated to which mouthwash to buy, which she did mention her video on. For someone who is purely trying to figure out which one to buy, I don't think "ending the debate on mouthwash" is the video to click. Then the thumbnail referencing teeth staining and mouthwash causing cavities. Though, even in her video on which mouthwash to buy, I still don't think she really gave specific recommendations, because there's too much shit out there, so it's quicker and easier to just give someone the tools to figure out what they need in a product for their specific situation, and then they can pick whatever one that fits that knowledge, and the video stays relevant. Checking the description is often a fast way to see what's up, though. For me, I went with the purple Listerine Total Care one in the zero alcohol version. I think that's the most general, well-rounded, maybe most useful mouthwash in that brand, that avoids having alcohol. She often uses an ACT one, and as long as it has fluoride and is anti-cavity, rather than anti-septic (generally), then I don't think she really gives much of a shit which mouthwash it is. She likes the red ACT one because she likes cinnamon lol. Sorry I type so much. I just go on and on forever.
So I pretty much permanently have texture on the gums above my front teeth. Sometimes one or two of the texture bumps will turn whitish but it is easily scraped off. My dentist told me to stop using any kind of mouthwash because it was killing the good bacteria and allowing yeast to grow. I did what he said and it hasn't helped at all. It doesn't look like thrush and it is only ever on the gums and not the tongue. Both my dentist and ENT have said it doesn't look like leukoplakia or anything, but it is still irritating to always have these little sand paper looking bumps above my front teeth. I am definitely team "leave the toothpaste on" but I would love to be able to incorporate mouthwash back in as well.
I actually have been encouraged to use mouthwash (alcohol free. I use Act) after I have an acid reflux episode. I feel like my mouth burns, but I know it's acid reflux. How do you find the pH on your mouthwash?
yessss! alcohol-free is good!!! it's sometimes extremely hard to find on google but that's what I usually do! I've linked the few that I found to be good in my description box. but in the future I definitely want to do a science experiment to test them all at home and let everyone know my findings!
Buy a $20 ph pen go to your local grow store they will have some seriously scientific grade ones for about 75 bucks and will accurately measure any liquids PH accurately as long as you calibrate the PH pen properly
I don't understand the anti mouthwash people. I recently saw a video by a dentist who did that you should never use it for longer than 2 weeks, and only use it if you have certain conditions.
One guy recommended acidic mouthwash because acid kills the germs, and you can wash your mouth out thoroughly after using it to prevent serious damage to your teeth.
First off: thanks for the video! I had no idea there was a difference in mouthwashes. Next, I can’t find the PH of my mouthwash online or on the product. I currently have: Crest Pro-Health Advanced Enamel Care no alcohol. Do you happen to know or know where I can go to find it?
sometimes it's sooo hard if the company doesn't reveal it! what I do is buy pH strips (easily can get on amazon) and test mouthwashes myself! haha! I haven't tested that one yet but I hope to make a video soon where I test a bunch of the most common mouthwashes!!! thank you for motivating me to get started on that!
I have two :) here's my fluoride vs xylitol video: ruclips.net/video/_q_mutp0jGM/видео.html and my xylitol as a sugar sweetener video: ruclips.net/video/6D050cgCZaw/видео.html
@@TeethTalk Thanks, ive been exploring its potential to eliminate your mouth of the bacteria that feed on sugars. The theory goes that they cant metabolise the Xylitol and get energy from it but they treat it as sugar so they feed on it and as a consequence they die, so with enough consumption their population should go away with regular hygiene. Im also interested to know if Sorbitol can contribute to tooth decay, because I saw a study posted on the website of a company that produces Xylitol products that claims that Sorbitol can be digested by acid producing bacteria and many toothpastes contain the stuff!
I have so many problems - my mouth is naturally acidic, i'm prone to cavities and have to have cleanings every 3 months, i'm in the 3% of cetylpyridinium chloride teeth staining (all confirmed by my poor dental hygenist and dentist) AND I'm allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate (which is in 80% toothpastes and mouthwashes). NOW I have to worry about my mouthwash acidity too 😭😭😭 Will there ever be a perfect mouthwash for me 😭
If you have a naturally acidic mouth, you might want to do an oral microbiome test as you likely have an abundance of acid-producing bacteria in your mouth. That will address the root cause, usually by adding an oral probiotic and xylitol chewing gum to promote good bacteria and kill bad ones. But if you're looking for products, I know Carifree and Therabreath have alkaline mouthwashes.
Hi. I have to use mouthwash to prevent oral thrush, due to side effects of Symbacort for asthma. Is this an exception to the non-abrasive better than, like Listerine?
9 месяцев назад
How do I know which one is antiseptic or anti cavity?
As long as you spit properly the little bit of floruide in your mouth won't cause any harm, if your really concerned than have a spit cup and don't swallow any saliva for 5 minutes.
GREAT QUESTION BECAUSEEEEEE I just scheduled my salt water video to post next Tuesday :) yay you read my mind! stay tuned!!!! but I'll give you a helpful spoiler -- usually salt water is great for soothing the gums, but it can be overused -- not something to use daily. learn more next Tuesday!
What is wrong with alcohol in mouthwash? The best mouthwashes are alcohol base. Listerine (original) is the best antimicrobial in the market, and according to research it has been the best anti-microbial mouthwash for almost a century.
Yes! It can be good as long as not overused :) and I usually don't recommend it for those with dry mouth -- some studies suggest it can make your mouth MORE dry. But as long as your dentist is happy with the health of your mouth regarding the products you're using -- that's what's important :)
Pretty sure any preservatives are neutralized in the formulation of the toothpaste, but I would probably avoid any toothpaste that tastes actively sour (I.E. orange or lemon flavored. Why does that exist?)
Hi two more questions :) @ 3:26 & 3:54 how about using a fluoride mouthwash before brushing? And Is it a good idea to use mouthwash after im done tongue scraping, (therabreath to be more specific) Is that alright? Love your videos and energy btw
Using a flouride mouthwash before brushing won't harm your teeth, but it will do less good than if it's your large step, since you'll just brush the mouthwash off your teeth again. My routine is Tounge Scrape -> Floss -> Brush -> Rinse -> Flouride Mouthwash and it's done wonders for me.
I used mouthwash 3 times in my life and on all three, I got cavities, not on one but multiple teeth. I had to get fillings and am forever scarred, never going to use one in this life whether it causes cavities or not.

I brush once in the morning, then mouth wash before bed and sometimes in the middle of the day. Mostly before bed
This video taught me so much. I’m gonna check my crest mouthwash asap!
I just know almost every average consumer, including myself, trusts that that seal is granted in good conscience with the science to back it up.
listerine is the best that's why they try to hurt their business. new mouthwashes out there all contain whitening which is bad.
Hey Whitney is therafresh a good mouthwash for an oral bacterial problem?
thank you. I learn so much from you and now have a flossing and mouth wash routine. You motivate very good
I stopped using mouthwash a year ago because My dentist told me that using mouthwash will make ones tongue lose its taste after a while. But watching your video now makes me feel like adding mouthwash to my routine again. Is it true that mouthwash will cause the tongue to lose its taste overtime?
it's how dentists make money. they solve problems but not prevent it
This is the best dental channel ever
nicest comment ever thank you!
@@TeethTalk no problem I :)
Here’s a thought, if mouthwash kills 99.9% of bad bacteria, isn’t going to kill the good bacteria too, leaving space for thrush/candida to thrive….
Hi Whitney! Which mouthwash is best that doesn’t cause staining of teeth?
Also, alcohol is correlated to mouth and throat cancers.... avoid all alcohol mouthwashes.
You're such a pretty girl! Thanks for the tips! From Berlin, Germany
Great video Whitney. I use act total care what my dentist told me to use and now I only drink water and sometimes juice. I stopped drinking soda snd now past few years I have way less cavities. I have listening too but I like to only use that when my gums bleed before I brush to kill bacteria if that works lol
I think some people like the burn from alcohol-based mouthwashes, they feel it's actually doing something.
Not me, I absolutely hate it.
If it was me, I would switch to an alcohol free mouthwash to be safe
don't.i use Listerine but must be in the right way
Does mouthwash with alcohol damage dental works like crown, veneers?
so what is the best mouthwash to use ?
Act, the green one in the small bottle. The 1.8 size I believe, the larger size is watered down..swish 1 full minute.
im so glad i found your page
I'm so glad you're here!!! Thank you :)
When i used mouthwashed and it had alcohol and although i used to rinse afterwards ...even using it for 30 seconds my breath drastically got worse....
"wow"!
doesn't the alcohol kill bacteria??? So there certaily is place for that but also a place for ph neutral mouthwash.
& Names always tells mom - talking so constantly fast so long effects breathing which also affects health, take time to breath between words.
a little late to this, but I HAVE A QUESTION: if i use mouthwash prior to brushing, do i need to wait 30 minutes before brushing my teeth? because usually after using mouthwash you have to wait 30 minutes before eating and drinking, I was wondering if the same applies to using toothpaste after mouthwash??
I thought stannous flouride also causes staining. There was a class action against one of the major brands for a whitening line they introduced with stannous flouride which stained people's teeth instead of whitening them.
here's my video more about that -- hope this helps: ruclips.net/video/t3OnncGoKMM/видео.html
Can you do a video of the Harvard study that showed oral b floss has cancer causing properties? Very interested in your opinion on this. This is the floss they give away for free at all dentists. My dentist acted like I was crazy when I brought it up.
I would like to see her opinion as well.
ohhh yes I've heard about this! long story short -- there were several limitations in this study, including being unable to measure other things that people use throughout the day that also increases the level of "PFAS" in one's body -- such using non-stick pans and stuff... anywho! here is a direct quote from the study: "Our understanding of sources of PFAS exposure remains incomplete".
but totally GREAT video topic -- I'll definitely consider making a video about this with more info :) :) :) thank you!
and here's the article if you want to read more about it until I make the video :)

Such a cute teethtalking girl 😊😃🥰
it would of been just easier telling us what brands to use .
She's educating people on how to choose a mouthwash.
She mentioned her other video: "What's The Best Mouthwash?"
Then at 5:50 she says there's recommendations in the description.
@@Siberius- yea but its easier just going to the store and picking out the brand that works. people dont have the time to listen to long boring chats
Chemical burn
@@mathiaspierce9204 that would make sense if it hadn't been there for years now. It is just annoying. It doesn't hurt or anything.
@@katiecraft6176 what Dentists wont tell you is how to feed those good bacteria, look up Dr Ellie Phillips and follow her Mouth Care System.
3 on the pH scale is the same colour as Mountain Dew. I have not had one of them in 15 years or more.
According to the NIH mouthwash can cause high blood pressure, hypertension, etc. this is the only question worth talking about.
I use plain good old Listerine the green one one time every month but I brush first and then use mouth. wash after
You are totally charming!
I use listerine mouth wash is that good
What toothpaste is good that is not acidic?

Mouth wash for the cavity prone
The music was a bit loud on this one I have tinnitus and it's hard to hear what your saying. (Although no music would be lovely)
shoot good tip! so sorry about that! thank you for watching! I'll def do a better check on the music!!!
So what is your opinion on corsydol?
Hey Whitney! Didnt.I hear that Mouth washes raise your blood pressure? Dont overlook that fact@
Is Biorepair gum protection mouthwash acidic?
Nitric oxide?
can you do a video about Xylitol?
I have two :)
here's my fluoride vs xylitol video: ruclips.net/video/_q_mutp0jGM/видео.html
and my xylitol as a sugar sweetener video: ruclips.net/video/6D050cgCZaw/видео.html
NOW I have to worry about my mouthwash acidity too 😭😭😭 Will there ever be a perfect mouthwash for me 😭
Try toothpaste tabs like Bite. It has limited ingredients but still contains either fluoride or hydroxyapatite.
Try peroxide and baking soda with coconut oil Brudda
@@mathiaspierce9204 peroxide is also avidic and especially someonr who's prone to cavities needs that flouride.
Hi...can I know whether teeth whitening before teeth crowning is a good thing??
What do you think about therabreath?
I think it's great for fresh breath and it's one of the mouthwashes I linked in the description box -- here it is: amzn.to/3J5hqZ5 hope this helps!
@@TeethTalk thanks!
Hi. I have to use mouthwash to prevent oral thrush, due to side effects of Symbacort for asthma. Is this an exception to the non-abrasive better than, like Listerine?
How do I know which one is antiseptic or anti cavity?
Rinse fluoride, leaving it on will be easy to swallow
As long as you spit properly the little bit of floruide in your mouth won't cause any harm, if your really concerned than have a spit cup and don't swallow any saliva for 5 minutes.
How about salty warm water? Can it work as well as mouth washes without alcohol? Thanks.
@@TeethTalk THANK YOU WHITNEY!!! 💃
Does it cause cancer
What are your thoughts on using just salt water as mouthwash?
here's my salt water video -- hope this helps: ruclips.net/video/AIdRLXejNeM/видео.html
Have you come across any evidence that antiseptic mouthwash negatively disturbs the oral microbiome?
Is there no concern about chlorhexidine causing DNA damage?
What about acidic toothpaste?
Seems hard to avoid the acidity between the flavoring ingredients and the shelf stability ingredients.
Thank You
