Busting Myths with Mason Ford - Does "Nicing" Affect a Golf Disc in Flight?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 фев 2024
- We joined top DGPT Touring Pro, Mason Ford and ran an experiment to settle the question once and for all...
Does saying "nice" increase the chance of a golf disc hitting a tree? We tested the theory with an MPO, MA2 and MP50 disc golfer.
Thank you to Justin Davis at Turkey Ridge Disc Golf Course in Seguin, TX for letting us use his beautiful facility. I recommend checking it out!

I think this is true. I just navigated a wicked curve in my car, the passenger said "nice" three quarters into it and I hit the curb!
Lol
I'm still blown away by the results of our experiment. Such a blast making this video!
My buddy farted and i said nice one. He sharted 😂
Had I read this about 25 seconds earlier, Id have spit scrambled eggs all over my phone 😂 Thank goodness I eat fast
Damn usually when you nice someone they hit a tree.
This guy gets niced and he drops logs.
@@palestalemale8831 LOL 😂
PDGA...Will now ban " Nicing"
Great fun video !
One added variable. A person typically only says NICE once the shot looks good. No one says NICE on a shot that looks doomed to hit a tree.
That’s what YOU think! 😂
i nice them before the throw
Hey Scott - I’m starting off saying I didn’t do the calculations yet, but that difference “may” not mean anything… in other words, it may not be statistically significant. I’m retired, so sometimes it takes me a bit to work up my “gumption”, but when I get a chance I’ll do a binomial hypothesis test on the data you showed. When you’re testing ‘yes/no’ data, it takes a lot of runs to detect even rather large differences between two ‘sets’ (treatments, in the lingo…).
"There's also zero evidence that trees exist." 😂😂🤣 I understand his sentiment down to the core of my soul. Watching dudes hit gap and line after line after line and the disc just silently breezes through and past everything that would absolutely be the head on collision destiny of any shot I attempt, can be very frustrating.
I like the initial experiment results, seems I should do my friends a favor and keep my mouth shut through the entire flight. I also think it would be fun and interesting to replicate this experiment myself, add to the data pool. Science is nice!
Nice is a real thing. Also I’m so I. Awe of the sound that the disc was making from all three players. That fizzzzz was fizzing.
The final suggestion from Kendrew is correct, need independent studies to demonstrate repeatability.
The only thing I can think of to add is, for when it's a judgement call, I think somebody who didn't know if nice was said or not would be better. Maybe have somebody down by the landing zone wave a green or red flag.
Nicing always makes shots/ putts go bad..great video guys!!
These days I'm content with yelling "Short!" when a dude hits the basket one inch low from 180 feet.
Mason Cheezing during the intro is great. Love the MF Diamondback!
Happy to see my fav frolfers having fun making creative and original content. Thanks guys!
Ok scott… This shits fire dude pls keep this up!!! This makes me so happy and is def the most enjoyable content iv seen in a while!
Sounds like legit data to me! I would love more disc golf science experiment videos!
Thank you for the v-sauce intro, so good
we need to keep this test going through 2024 as a community
Nice to see Mason. He just brings a little extra flavor to the video.
Good content man everyone wanted to see this video
The nicing on the cake
HAHA You always find a way to find fun in the sport.
Can't wait to get my Cardinal and Wren discs.
I enjoyed this. A lot of fun.
This episode was Nice. The graphic is cool, you been Niced.
Thank you! I'm proud of the graphic for sure!
Nice! Also, the next test should be the results of first throw vs. second throw. Second throw always seems to be so much better.
I love that humor ❤
I've learnt the sign language for nice so I can 'nice' other players on the sly!
(Actually I picked up a few dg related signs after being paired with a deaf player during doubles, thought they would be nice to know If I play with him or another deaf player in the future)
Can we get a "You've been nice'd" patch 😅😂
Loved the opening line! 😂😂
I wanna see the same, but on a wide faurway, say...100' wide with trees in each side. A while back, a buddy niced my awesome drive, but then skipped and landed out of bounds. Science. Awesome video. Cant wait to try those new discs
Scott’s shorts are wild
Future Stokely disc name "Nice"
Next question.
Is Marijuana a performance enhancing drug?
Im 910 rated, I have me medical card and I would willingly be the test subject. 😊
Nice vid guys.😁🥰
I’m here for this! Quantum entanglement is the answer. The observer has control.
Perfect! If an opponent is running away with it I just need to say nice shot more frequently! Great study! Clearly more data needs to be gathered. For the next study, could you please clearly state a strong hypothesis statement in addition your research question prior to conducting the study ?
Awesome!
Chas Ford - you out there somewhere? 😂 an old Kazoo buddy here 😊
The issue is that the 920 player's accuracy was significantly lower. I didn't count, but it seemed he was niced more than 50% of the time. That would skew the results.
Could you calculate the data for each individual player?
He was niced 21 times out of 40 throws. The data is displayed at the end of the video as well.
Nice video
My brother always complained to me not to say " nice " during his throw because he said it was ruining his shots. Every time I said it, it hit a tree or rolled away right after. Since it bothered him, I stopped saying it. Or at least waited until after the shot had completely stopped. But I thought he was being overly superstitious. Now I'm beginning to wonder ! Maybe it does bring bad luck ! Lol.
Ports or shants? What shall we call those Scott?
Hahaha
LOL
lol good stuff bro!
I seen that the 3rd guy just aiming at the trees a lot
The person that decides whether the disc hit a tree or not shouldn't know whether the word 'nice' was spoken. Their knowledge of the 'nicing' may have affected their decision making. Also, like others have said, you need to analyse the results properly to determine whether the difference is statistically significant (although I suspect it is), and the experiment needs to be repeated independently.
This was still a fun experiment and video.
The person nicing did not decide. It was randomized by the app. The data is good. 😉
@@ScottStokelyDG I'm talking about the person registering the tree hits. They should not know whether the throw was 'niced'.
Yes it absolutely does. At least for me. Every single time i nice my own disc it hits a tree. Even if there are no trees in the fairway. Still happens.
Send this to Drew Gibson. "See!!??"
I always tell people "DON'T TALK TO IT IN THE AIR!!!!!"
I’d suggest nicing is not totally random on course.
It usually gets used when a throw looks fantastic but isn’t yet home free
That, and "nicing" has a tilt-factor to consider when someone says "nice" on a throw that goes badly. Then the thrower (even if just a little, in their head) gets annoyed, and that tilts future throws by some degree.
"Nice" is right up there with "Hit a house!" in its ineffectivity. It doesn't do anything, but it's a good reason to blame someone else
I nice my friends putts. Lol missing 20's. 😅
“No evidence that trees exist”
🤣🤣
well...just means we need another video :)
“Scott, I Swear!”
“no you don’t”
a "niced" shot isnt random. It looks like a nice shot or you got past/through something and someone nices the shot. Then something may or may not tragically happen
Nice.
Nice
"The Malocchio" is real!😂
Next experiment, how do random people react to being niced consistently (pick one person in a flight and nice them on every tee shot, do that for a month, write down a field report each day what happened) 😂
Results: NICE
you did everything right, but the sample size of the data is too small. You would need to throw 10,000 or more shots to have ok data, and even more than that to have great data.
Only need a sample size of 110 to be valid. 300 to be better.
Usually the context of “nice” is an early expression by where the first third or so flight of the disc looks to be on a great line. Almost as the expression is proclaimed the disc then finds that 20% tree that was not seen in the path at the beginning. Thus, “nice” is just a product of premature congratulation
I’m a great fan of science you know…
I don't think you understand what nicing is. This isn't science!? Nice is a feeling you get when you see someone throw a shot that looks perfect, but then there is some kind of hidden danger that you weren't aware of. I've niced a lot of times, but being told when to nice already invalidates the experience.
It’s a real thing. Just don’t do it. Your buddy will understand
In my experiences, nicing is only affective if done during putting not throws.
Also, you DONT nice a shot that is heading for a tree!
nicing is not a thing. The disc would've hit the tree whether nice was said or not.
The problem is that the nice-guy is actually watching and deciding if he should say nice beforehand. this needs to be predetermined if he should or not say nice and these should be 50% of the throws. but the thrower should not know if the nice guy will say nice.
The "Nicer" didn't decide for himself. It was randomized to ensure no bias.
You are correct. You just described EXACTLY how we did it :)
I say nice all the time, and when people say don´t nice my shot, I just do i even more, course it´s stupid superstition! Like knocking on wood. Grow up !!
I “niced” this video at approx the 3minute mark.l.
If U ask players that play on a daily basis and or just go to a park and randomly film or record data on how many times what appears to be a great throw until someone says “nice” then it suddenly hits a random branch that wasn’t even in the path of the disc yet somehow?!
Love and appreciate the idea for clicks and views butden in merica science isn’t real, especially all the new corporate sciences that only equal turrible things ❤️💛💚
Don’t “nice” people on the course regardless of your science please and thank you 🙏🏾 that said, “niced” someone on the course yesterday!? 😂😮 it’s sometimes impossible to stop what is intended usually as a compliment regardless of beliefs in science or not, is a coin round or flat 🪙 🌍 huh that’s so weird, is that math or science U guys wonder?!
Bless up all enjoy the day, especially if U get to play a round ❤️💛💚
Now I have no choice. I have to "nice" every single throw I witness. I'm obligated now! This is on you!
The sample size is way too small. There was no control group. So your science is flawed, just like me.
Scott: "I can't throw as far as Mason 🥹"
Also Scott: *cRaaAaAAaaaNK* 🥏
Cheers 🤙
Nice video
