  • For a Whitetail Deer Hunter, Opening day is something we look forward to from the time the previous season comes to a close. There’s just something special about starting a new season, with new goals, and another opportunity to enjoy one of God’s greatest creations - The Deer Woods.
You often hear some of the best deer hunter’s in the country talk about the opportunity that comes with opening day - Deer haven’t been hunted all year, and typically early on you can still hold deer to a pattern.
Well, in 2005 Mike Rex had an opening day that he will likely never replicate. Now, I say that reluctantly because when you talk about Mike Rex, this man knows his stuff. A quick search for Mike Rex will show you that he is the real deal. Mike is the former president of the Buckeye Big Buck Club and has 20 record book bucks scoring over 140” entered himself. So, Mike’s skills as a deer hunter are exceptional, and this buck was no fluke.

Mike lives down the road from me and is a good family friend. I know he watches deer on family land. He definitely knows his stuff. He and his family are good people.

No better accomplishment as a hunter than beating a old wise buck that you have history with at his game, congratulations

There's much more to this story which is very interesting. I've stayed at the campground that Mike and his wife own and have hunted the local area. Very cool piece of hunting history that surrounds this story and the area.

Guys a deer junkie, I use to volunteer for Big buck club while attending hocking college, met mike and a lot of other great guys as well. Certain guys have that it factor and mikes one of them, may Christman is another Athens guy who kills giants I believe 200 inch in 2020. I hunt near Stewart Ohio 20 min from Athens. Lived in nelsonville for three years before transferring colleges to wvu. By far the best time of my life. Hocking isn’t what it use to be but still some great natural resources teachers. Very impactful on most of us students. Look forward to my rut trip every year. Hopefully purchasing some land in the near future. Thanks for sharing.
