    As a lifelong Rush fan, it was most interesting for me to see Geddy laying back and not taking a more forward and visible position. He very much respected the fact that he was playing with someone else, in their band. Despite the relatively shitty mix, I thoroughly enjoy watching this performance.

    Yes were a massive influence on the much younger Rush band members. Especially Chris Squire on Geddy Lee. As Geddy has said a few times without Yes there would be no Rush as we know them. Geddy nominated Yes for induction into the hall of frame. At this time Chris had already passed away. RIP Chris very much missed.

      Geddy also said that Yes were the only band he and Alex stayed up all night waiting for. They had some excellent influences: Alex was a Page man and Geddy Chris. Makes you really wish the XYZ band actually released some albums.

    Geddy seemed really happy to be on stage, playing this song with Yes. You are right, the actual rendition is not as amazing as their early days. In particular, Alan White has really slowed down as a drummer, so the tempo is off. But it was great seeing them get inducted - finally.

    • @davep8221
      @davep8221 2 года назад +2

      Geddy got to play only because his greatest bass hero was "late." Look up bittersweet and see this performance. I also hear that he made it pretty clear that he really wanted to play on this which is so cool. I wish he'd'a played his old Rick as a nod. So many bassists claim Geddy as a major influence. It's sad that so few talk about Chris. And Steve, as a guitarist, has almost fallen off the map. John Petrucci is one of the few I've heard. Then again, his goal was to mix Yes and Metallica.
      Agreed. IMO, Steve has slowed down to the point where the songs are noticeably slower, so the tempo could be because of Steve.
      Doesn't take away from his winning 5 Guitar Player Magazine Best Overall Guitarist 5 years in a row. They created the Hall of Greats to give others a chance. Only two others are in it with him.
      More than their technical virtuosity, it was, IMO Yes's compositional brilliance that defined them. Tribute bands can do things "Close..." [nearly] note for note, but only Yes have ever composed anything like it. Yes had the confidence to play simple, slow, whatever was needed to please the audience, not just to be the fastest or most complex or max time signature/key changes. They didn't shy away from them, but they weren't the goal of what they wrote. The slow middle part of "Awaken" shows that perfectly, IMO.

    I don't think there's ANYONE (Ged included) that would prefer to see Geddy over Chris Squire. And yeah, Chris would likely have been more aggressive, but Geddy's got to strike a proper balance; it's not his band and if he lets loose he runs the risk of looking like he's trying to upstage the band being honored.

    Rush was my gateway band to prog, and Yes. I knew "Roundabout" and "All good people" but my friends all had "All the World's A Stage" and it scratched my hard rock itch and also made me appreciate longer songs. Soon (not that "Soon",) and since, Yes moved to the top. Love "Stage." Not a note out of place. But I miss "Discovery" from "2112." They aren't big fans of that live album, though. They're wrong. Yeah, I said it. IMO, of course ;->
    To Justin: I love the links you provide for buying the music. I'm sure you generate sales for all of these bands. Shows the blockers *cough* Phil *cough* that they're wrong. Because there's nothing better than listening to a song + YT ads+ commentary (NO OFFENSE) on YT rather than the pure recording.

    That must of been a bit different just playing bass for Geddy. He looks like he would have loved to be doing keyboards and singing as well. LOL No, it didn't sound as good as when they were younger but time takes it's toll. I know I am the same age as Geddy. It sucks!

      Good as he was Geddy v Rick probably made him think thrice. His keyboard stuff was mostly, IMO, was for ambiance with some occasional riffage.

    This video is of course something special. On the one hand the occasion (the induction of Yes into the Rock'n Roll Hall Of Fame), on the other hand Geddy Lee on bass (Chris Squire passed away in 2015). But musically more interesting I find a recording from 2018 (where Anderson is also in better voice). Under "YES ARW live at the Apollo" you will find a complete concert video from 2018, which also includes "Roundabout". "ARW" are Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman. The band wasn't allowed to call themselves "YES", hence "YES (feat.) ARW".

  • @lancelange9377
    @lancelange9377 Год назад

    When I went to see ARW both Rabin and Wakeman came out into the crowd, Rabin with his guitar and Wakeman with a keytar. Wakeman sat in the seat right next to me and Rabin in the seat next to him and they jammed. Was a very surreal moment I will never forget. Allan White (RIP) was really past his prime and making mistakes here, which is sad to see. I think Geddy stuck to the basics of the song and played in a respectful subdued way.

    • @theAsterisk
      @theAsterisk 2 года назад

      @@jamzales Anderson is on-and-off just a bit of a dick, his hippy-dippy love-and-peace persona notwithstanding. Same guy that invited a cult leader onstage during a Yes set without telling the rest of the band, then let the loon ramble on about some new age nonsense long enough they ran over the venue's time limit and had to pay a contractual penalty.
      I'd put money on Anderson being the reason they didn't just let the current bassist, Billy Sherwood, who Squire actually picked to replace him, play the short set. Sounds and sings very much like him, same playing style, and worked with Yes as a guitarist and wrote with Squire for nearly thirty years. Anderson probably still holds against Sherwood that Squire once tried to recruit him to replace him on vocals decades ago, even though Sherwood turned it down immediately as a vocal-mismatch and started writing with Squire instead.

    I think Geddy may have been thinking that this wasn't the time to try to compete with or upstage one of his idols. I think he was just thrilled to be playing with Yes and may have shown some restraint. It was their day, not his.
    That being said, I agree; this performance feels a bit flat, and I think the mixing/recording has a lot to do with it. I may not be an audio engineer, but I am a lifelong music fan and I can tell when the sound quality is meh. This was meh.
