Thank you for watching and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thanks for all your support during the year, it's been a big year for us with coming to US, moving into the new boat and the big refit. Lots of work and a bit of stress but now we can look back at it and say "we did it!". You guys watching, commenting and being supportive of the project has cheered us along the whole way! Next year will have a lot more of actual SAILING, exploring and hopefully some skiing too. Can't wait!
Happy New Year to you and Sohvi, Juho. Looking forward to your adventures in 2023. The seals in the video looked like Harbor Seals. Large numbers of them are resident in the Bay area year round. The California Sea Lion, also seen in the Bay area, migrates.
With 50 years experience, it's rather hard to see what type of shaft apparatus you're using. A good rule of thumb though is that your shaft should drip through your stuffing box at least 5 drips per 10 to 15 seconds. This allows you to relax knowing your shaft is not heating up and no significant water is entering your vessel. Your hard work shows and I for one appreciate it. Fair Winds,Mark

Man, I have absolutely zero interest in sailing in the arctic myself but I've loved watching this channel since the first time I saw this dude solo sailing and skiing with beautiful footage of frozen anchorages.
@@wyattfamily8997 I found in Alaska that I can't handle the cold physically, but I learned that the Arctic is as exotic and beautiful as warm tropics, so I greatly enjoy following Juho and Sohvi on their adventures wherever they take us---vicariously.
Having done 2 huge refits, I actually prefer the sailing, specially the Arctic sailing, so white and frosty and beautiful. Don't be a slave to RUclips, do what you love and let the rest take care of itself.
I had the same Garcia boat from Philippe Harle. When sailing with the engine, it is very easy to block the centreboard by raising it 20 centimeters and tightening the two up and down lines. For information, there is no risk of raising the centerboard while sailing because downwind you have to sail with the rear centerboard completely down and the central centerboard completely up.Originally it was planned to inflate pads called "ride tire" to maintain the centerboard but with experience we do without! Il you need more ask me. I am on my second Garcia boat… Do not hesitate to contact me! Have a good trip
There are lots of boat fixing channels but few Arctic sailing channels, especially with people like you who are so at home in this environment. Keep going
Amazing achievement turning a a ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. After following you for about two years it’s great to see your dreams realized. Looking forward to seeing your Arctic adventures. Congratulations.
Greetings from Vancouver Canada . A fan of your channel. Love your great Finnish sense of humour. If nobody commented yet, those are seals near SF Bay with a humpback whale. Benny (I may support you in a different way). Cheers. Benny Lee
Her laugh at 12:05 as Juho confidently declared 1/3rd full-tank totally broke me. The "You hope buddy" is something I've experienced from my friends as well when confidently declaring the amount of fuel left in my car.
It will be interesting to hear what repairs were needed on the centerboard and seal. What happened? How long on land? What exact repairs were made? Until then, Happy New Year! (ps; I enjoy your channel whether repairing or sailing.)
When I was watching the part about the rubber strips not having worn, I was thinking "How about 'compression set'? Maybe they've just squashed into a thinner, wider profile"
How funny that more people tune in for the refit videos and then lose interest when it comes time for the boat to do what it was meant to do! I actually skipped the last parts of the repair videos so I could see you all getting to use it. Good luck.
As a European girl with her European boat I have to say I enjoy your channel , I'm not great at swimming with sun fish and turtles. I have just come out of 10 days of ice. Me and my boat just iced in and being careful with our water and fuel but it was fine and our Eberspacher was a godsend. So , no, I don't want to watch the Bahamas , I like a bit of frost and I'm looking forward to it.
How beautiful for you to be underway and coming to Canada. We live on the Fraser River where there are some famous marinas Steveston and Granville Island in the harbor of downtown Vancouver should have fireworks and skiing at grouse Mountain 15 minutes from downtown. There is night skiing which is amazing to see the city and ski at the same time. If you have to pull the boat out for any reason one of the best yards is Shelter Island marina in Richmond on the south arm of the Fraser River. Ok, happy new year and thank you for your videos and sharing your journey.
I ithink a lot of people will watch your sailing videos because sailing the Artic is not something they will ever do themselves. Good luck with the new boat - I will be watching from my armchair!
Brave work going out 500 nm or so without a sea trial on a boat with history as yours is. All the best for your arctic crossing. Thanks for publishing. Love your videos - all of them!
I recommend that when you get just north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, that find out where Browning Wall is located on Browning Channel. It is one of the best cold water dive sights in the world, but you don't necessarily have to scuba. From sea kayaks it is easily possible to see the marine life clinging to the rock wall that goes on for a km or more. Best time is early morning with the sun shining to light the water. Also give a call to God's Pocket nearby. You may be able to enjoy a bed on shore with a hot shower. One of my favourite places for kayak camping is in that area. Also watch for the huge colony of Northern Sea Lions on the East side of Hope Island.
You did it!!! Fantastic! You both worked so hard and turned your boat into something beautiful! It looks like a totally different boat! Congratulations and all the best for a Happy New Year!
hey guys if you are interested in working out how to dip your tanks and get an accurate read against the wet brass - try a bit of steel workers chalk. essentially dry the dipping stick - mark a line of chalk along the length where you think it is likely to be - and presto the difference and height of fuel is immediately discernable
My favorite sailing channel exactly because of the uniqueness and broad range of technical topics. The more detail the better! Your boat looks phenomenally beautiful now!
First of all Happy New Year ! You talked about losing some viewers because you will be doing "Arctic Sailing " now and not boat refit videos . Truthfully that is what attracted me to your channel in the first place . The fact that you were in the Arctic and seemed to be the only channel making videos about it was amazing to me . Just keep doing what you are doing and the views will come to you .
On your comments about Artic Sailing. We live in the North East Sailing waters and often are amazed at how so many southern boaters have no clue of the beauty of the Great Lakes and additionally the Maine coast and Canadian waters. In a selfish way I hope not too many find out!! Happy New Year to you and your crew!!☮️
On your first going out in a good weather window north - in 2017 I spent 14 days in Bodega Bay (Blow-dega) waiting for a window north….. you all are awesome….
Hey guys, and girls, 1st, congratulations to Sophie on her pending Doctorate. What a charming and humble but beautiful woman she is. You sir are a most fortunate man. You and Sophie are a great match, gentle and soft-spoken, without dramatics. What a pleasant surprise. I saw you first in the yard on your first visit into Lumi. I will follow you as long as I can. I am almost 87 and no longer sail my 1976 New, Challenger Ketch on Lake Ontario, NY, or Canada from April 1st each season till November 1st with my ex-wife and sons, 7 & 11 when we started cruising in a used 1969 Cal 29, Good luck and fair winds my new friends.
Glorious!!! Awesome maiden voyage. What a treat for New Years Eve. ( New video) Lumis sails are exquisite! She is so beautiful. I'm not a sailor, but if you say " it's time to go" then, I'd trust you, it's time to go. Been waiting what seems like an eternity for you to come back on line. We are in it for the long haul. Can't wait for more. Bring on 2023!
901 comments says it all. You guys are a compelling watch because you do it all….the technical refurbish and the sailing…mostly to cold and difficult areas. The boat looks magnificent! Very special from the drone. Loved the seals and never saw seals jump like dolphins before! Amazed that you had a window on the drop fin/keel. That is a temporary problem , as is the leaking drive seal. Understandably annoying…but so typical of owning board! You will be elated when they are both repaired…even though your seal is brand new. I am your fan whether it is technical or sailing. You are doing a fabulous job of telling your story. Thank you for your time and patience in editing these wonderful videos. ⛵️
Funny, when I saw it was a foreign language I tried to translate it, then I let Google do the job. Lycka should Luck and till = good... Then I could translate it without any problem! Seems there is just a little imagination needed to translate when Dutch is the native language 😂
My childhood was spent in the Bay Area and your start made me feel strangely sentimental, seeing the familiar Bay. Interestingly, you must have passed my current home on Discovery Passage in BC as you travelled north
just bought a 27ft sailboat , from Norge, my new life , your inspirational to me as i don't know anything ..., have sailed before but in 14 12 foot boats this is new to me and i am choosing to give up my old life and going to live on my boat rent free and the ocean is going to be my highway ,,so much to learn and so much to do , like learning a new language ., love your channel inspiring stuff
Im really happy to hear the videos have served as inspiration, if youve sailed small boats you'll do well with your new one as well! Have fun and enjoy the journey!
congratulations on the launch and in my opinion a successful first passage. Looks like a great boat, very cozy and protected cockpit. Can't wait to see more, your drone shots are amazing.
I’m willing to bet that the primary bushing on the keel is worn and allows the keel to pivot longitudinally, once it goes off center it catches the water and slides to the side making a lot of noise. Haul it and drop it obviously
What you achieved in just 4 months is nothing short of legendary. It took me 7 months just to restore a 20 foot trailer sailer! Thanks for the video. I understand why you didn’t film much during the refit as you needed to be very focused on the work. I’m here for the long haul and looking forward to watching the sailing adventures unfold.
You are a Great Couple, and Very Resourceful , and knowledgeable , Congratulations on Launching Your New Boat, We enjoy Your Videos Very Much!, Best Regards! ⛵
So happy to see you guys back in the water. I crave the arctic sailing videos and seeing you deal with the hardships involved in the extreme weather conditions. Keep up the good work and your boat looks beautiful after the refit.
Hey It's great to have you both back again. Lumi isn't only a beautiful name, she is a beautifull vessel indeed. I enjoy the plainless of the hull. I enjoy the woodwork inside a lot. I would love to be with you out there, but I can't and that's okay. You take care of your vessel and i will take care of my little company. That's all good. I am used to building up old thnigs and there will always be some problems, that's part of it. Yes I and I can't wait to see you in the Artic and I will definitvely with all the way. Save winds and happy returns to both of you. Roland from good old Germany.
I love your video series with both the repairs and the sailing in places most people will never see. You and Sophie are venturing into one of the most remote and dangerous parts of the world. Seeing this up close will be a spectacular arm chair adventure. Please do not underestimate the challenge in front of you. Many more people have climbed Mt. Everest than have done the Northwest Passage. Unlike Northern Europe help is not readily available and you are truly on your own. Safe journey. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations kids you have done an incredible amount of work on this boat, which looked like some wreck several months ago. I will follow your trip with pleasure.....
The variety of information, experiences, and destinations you provide the youtubers is phenomenal. We're never likely to see Antarctica or the northern hemisphere, so keep on producing, and those of us who are hooked on your channel will wait patiently for you to complete your tales. Thankyou for sharing your life with us.
Great to see that you have now realized your dream, and now are sailing again. Sad that we did not have the opportunity to meet with you as you cruise through Vancouver Island. All the best wishes, and fair winds as you sail North!
You haven't appeared on my YT feed for so long! I am so happy to see you under sail again, and not on a power boat wanting to be a sail boat. Happy 2023 to you both.
Congratulations on getting the boat in the water and what I would consider a successful shakedown cruise. I’m looking forward to the sailing videos of the arctic. Happy New Year to you!🎉
Going out the Bay northbound on a construction site .... ambitious. You obviously did toss the right currency and value of coins to Poseidon's liking, given weather and barcrossing and all. Lumi's easy on the eyes - great droneshots. That centerboard rubber - depending on its exact chemical formulation - could have shrinked considerably in the neglected times of her on the hard - I reckon You did get that sorted by now. Looking keenly forward to the North West Passage videos. Thanks for sharing on RUclips! (Here from three digit subscriber numbers onwards by the way). All the best to You both and Lumi for a healthy happy 2023!
I’ve been enjoying your northern adventures for quite a while now and look forward to following your further expeditions in the high arctic in 2023. Happy New Year to you both.
Lot's of comments so maybe I'll repeat someones comment. It happened to me when I let an "experienced" guy to spin while dry, so almost sinked my boat. After that I learned not to spin the shaft while dry, and the other important thing when first touching the water vent all the air from the shaft pipe, also don't overdo with greasing the rubber bearing cause it has water openings for cooling. In short the rubber lips burn fast if dry. Channel and the content are very informative. Hope one day you'll publish a book, a pocket handbook with details that bothered you guys and how you managed to solve them. Best of luck from Croatia
You might consider replacing the rubber strips in the centreboard box will PTFE/ Teflon plates. They will not compress and have very low friction characteristics. They can also be machined to fit snuggly which should reduce the lateral movement. Good luck and good sailing.
PTFE / Teflon is not good for use close to or in the water because it takes up water an swells. In marine Applications you prefer to use POM as a low friction plastic. It takes up almost no water and has good low friction characteristics. It is used a lot for keel bearings or rudder bearings.
I LOVE to see a boat gliding over the water, and everything that accompanies that. I admit I can't really follow chit-chat about engines, philters or gas gages. Give me sailing, riding over the waves, skiing in beautiful landscapes!
I'm so happy to see you guys smiling and in the water!!! I hope you are safe, the waters can be quite rough up arouns Washington. I'm sure you've made t past it all now i have not finished the video yet! Happy new year!!
I was here for the refit, but i enjoy your sense of humor and I want to see what you do from here. I found it interesting that it seems to be universal to greet wildlife with "Hello (animal)"
It's so nice to see you guys make it this far since I briefly met you guys in Sigló way back. Keep your spirits up, you have lots of people rooting for you! 😃
I'm definitely looking forward to watching you guys sailing arctic waters! There's lots of channels on YT about various people exploring the Caribbean sea, the gulf of Mexico, and the Mediterranean sea, so Arctic sailing is a bit of fresh air hehe Happy new year!
Thanks for your honesty Mark, it was probably the right yacht if it was in a different place, but I've found in my experience that the right yacht does come up in the right place eventually for the right price 😉 having had a number of yachts I understand your mind set, very mixed emotions and stresses in these situations. Good luck, the channel is great, fair winds
You certainly have the right temperament for intelligently handling the serious problems that often plague adventurous sailors. I admire the calm demeanor you maintain when faced with added problems and expenses. I don’t know if it’s mostly cultural, learned or instinctive but it certainly is an explorers job requirement and a great asset. You are definitely a Captain! Happy, Safe, New Year!
there are more people watching this because unlike other promo videos like, "life is perfect" videos, this seems real...this trip is much anticipated because sailing the north west passage is not for amateurs ...best if luck!
Congratulations Juho and Sofi on a really great job resurrecting your new boat. Lumi is looking really great. I am sure that you will run into one or two issues now that you are sailing again... hopefully none to serious. All the best to you both for the new year and as you continue your journey. I am really looking forward to watching your videos again this year (yeah, it's 2023 in our part of the world already). Have a great shakedown cruise to your next destination. 🎉👍🙂

Everest than have done the Northwest Passage. Unlike Northern Europe help is not readily available and you are truly on your own. Safe journey. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on your first sailing journey in several months.
Happy New Year!
So happy for you guys and looking forward to watching your journey!
Beautiful, unhurried footage of the vastness of the sea. Thank you so much!
I like those sails, the red on them is very nice looking.
Enjoying your channel in all aspects. The skiing and snowboarding tied in with sail adventures are very unique. Happy new Year.

The drone footage of the seals and whale is stunning, what a experience… the serie is prison break I think.
I'm interested to see how well the boat sails as you get familiar with it. Excited to see future videos.
Beautiful and impressive set sail. A belated Bon voyage 🎊🎉🎈🙏
I am so happy to see this video on New Year’s Eve. So exciting thank you so much and congratulations on all you’ve accomplished.
I was here for the refit, but i enjoy your sense of humor and I want to see what you do from here. I found it interesting that it seems to be universal to greet wildlife with "Hello (animal)"
welcome aboard! :)
Happy New Year! Great job and beautiful sailing footage. ❤
TV Series = Prison Break!
Congratulations 🎉 on getting sailing again
Very much enjoy . Godspeed. In it for the long haul as a viewer.
Being yourself is always the best option…. And I kinda love the way you both go about producing something real and very rare. Cheers 🙏🏽
Nice passage with beautiful video footage. Boat looks fantastic and the problems seem minor enough to me. I love Solvi's jumper!
It's so nice to see you guys make it this far since I briefly met you guys in Sigló way back. Keep your spirits up, you have lots of people rooting for you! 😃
And I am one of those people rooting for them.
OOF! Just the silence of the creeks and groans. Can't wait to be back out on the water. Fair Winds guys
I'm definitely looking forward to watching you guys sailing arctic waters! There's lots of channels on YT about various people exploring the Caribbean sea, the gulf of Mexico, and the Mediterranean sea, so Arctic sailing is a bit of fresh air hehe
Happy new year!
Thanks for your honesty Mark, it was probably the right yacht if it was in a different place, but I've found in my experience that the right yacht does come up in the right place eventually for the right price 😉 having had a number of yachts I understand your mind set, very mixed emotions and stresses in these situations. Good luck, the channel is great, fair winds
i think you commented on the wrong idea, but I agree with you, that wharram was a bad idea! bad location...
You guys are amazing. So much hard work and love put into the boat!
best of luck to you in all the sailings!
Wow.
Take a bow both of you, be very proud about what you have achieved. You are superstars!
Oh Captain! My Captain!
Happy New Year. I have to say I was sceptical when I first saw this boat but now it's sailing, wow! What a lovely boat.
