I've had my dreads about 7 years. Those are good tips. I can't think of anything not to do. You seemed to cover it all. I know I feel more beautiful than I ever have. Being natural is freeing I think. I love how God made me. If anything don't listen to others. Some people tried talking me out of it.
I left my loctician who I loved because she is sooooo secretive. I have no idea what she was using in my hair. She did a good job, but not knowing what she was using or doing(palm roll, interlocking, etc) is what broke the camel's back. She would also get upset because my locs are really frizzy. I'm 6 months in my loc journey and thought it's part of the process? I also workout and she said to tie it down after I come from my workout. She was saying I was doing something wrong and told me to stop using water and only put oil. I asked but what about moisture? She was like the hair automatically creates it from the inside. Thank you for this information and I agree!
Unity Aborigine Love . I am going through the same exact thing. but will not see another dollar of mine. I call for the hair but she has a responsibility to be honest and have integrity in business. thanks
1st...let me tell you that you are gorgeous! Your make up is "beat"! Your are wicked funny! I would totally ask you out for coffee. ta he ta he. GURL!!!!! you are the truth! all that you said not to do, I all ready don't do! I felt like I was giving this tutorial and I do my own locs. I've had mine for 8yrs, and I do them myself. I appreciate them more and for me, it's the patience and love I grow them for. I am not a "salon dred". I'll share something with you, I use lemon (only) dish detergent to get out all of the oil and gunk when I doing my once a month to every 6 week washing. I only use the good detergent, like Ajax or Dawn, not the low budget $1 ones. It is amazing. My hair is literally "squeaky" clean. Then I wash with my normal shampoo (Creme of Nature Argon Oil" and then to replenish the ph, I put all natural oils in.... black Jamaican castor oil, oilve, almond, lavander, all those wonderful ones in a mix and slightly warm it up in hot water and apply with a applicator. I re warm the oil every time it cools down. i bag it up like with supermarket shopping bags because my hair is so long. Then I wrap it in a towel on top of that and walk around all day at home, giving my self a wonferfful natural hot all treatment. This of course in a weekend job. Then I style if i am that day and dry for about 40 minutes on low then I'm good to go. My hair comes out so soft a bouncy. I get that natural shine. It's like squeezing 2 fingers together with nothing in the middle...that bounding feeling. Ight gurl, I wrote enough, no copyrights here, so please share. toodles!
OMG! You told the truth about what not to do with your locs. it is so much bad info on the internet. You did a good job! Wish I had found your videos when I first started my locs!
Years ago I had locs. I washed them daily because my hair was so fine. They were fine. I also used beeswax once a year in a mixture to help my locs hold. They were fine. Now, years later, I started locs again with a long curly length. Less is more. No alcohol products. I don’t over twist. I’m letting the locs decide how they want to be grown. What works for one night not work for another and vice versa.
I got offended at first when she said that Africans dont know how to deal with locs, but i thought about the salons in my country and the locs i see people walking around in... Its true... lol... majority of us know very little about locs
Africans are talented! We are good and some thing bad at others... I have Nigerian blood but I’m great with lox’s but braids... lawd I haven’t a clue how to make that braid stay in your head lol we all got weakness and strengths
OMG, I have found someone with the same mind set as myself. You hit all the top NO's with the locs. I have friends with locs and one told me that she started brushing her locs and I screamed, told her the same thing about becoming shedder on her hair. Keep teaching, you are good at it, we need no nonsense people to tell it like it is.
I love this! I feel really good about my locs after watching this because I don't do any of this. I twist my own locs and I am constantly checking to make sure I am doing the right thing. Beautiful! Thank you!
Angela Renee that's y I never been and will never go. They charge 200 here but 20 home. And don't even shampoo 1st. Foh. RIP off. And they pull your hair way too tight
Shalom, I just love your honesty and your personality. What you covered will help me, when I get my start up locs. I agree about the African shops. Tu for the video.
Thanks for the advice. I just started my locs a week and a half ago. Second attempt. First attempt I'm ashamed to say I went to a braid shop and the lady tried to talk me out of it and she parted them too big, and twisted too tight and I looked 12 on my 30th birthday. I redid them my way free form and I'm in love with them. I look forward to this loc journey
YOUR HONESTY IS REFRESHING! NEVER EVER go to an African braid shop for locs. they know absolutely nothing about locs lol i have been saying this for years..... and your humor i love lol! thanks for sharing.
Wowww, you just single handedly saved my locks. I just got my locks and its been 3 months already and I appreciate you coming to my hair-scue before I made some of those mistakes. Thank youuuuuu
It is almost 12:09am in the morning and I want you to know that I'm an instant subscriber. You had me on my bedroom floor rolling over. Pure education and an extreme comedian. I'm def. gonna be watching your videos on a daily basis.
that was very helpful .. especially the last point because I am a hijabi and started to grow my freeform dreads.. I try not to put the head cover when my hair is wet and stay at home until it is completely dry.
Thank you Jah Licia, I only brush every once and again, my locs are seven years old. lately I've been picking out the lint. I'll keep doing that. thank you again. I love your locs.
Blessing Ashanti damn you got to insult someone on their comment.. let me guess you African? Wellllll..... that’s why I don’t go to them and why they hair never done? They got the best braiders in the city why they hair never done? Why don’t they treat the hair they done wash or condition or nothing... they jus jump right in. Everything that works for your hair doesn’t mean it will work for mine... I went to one in Charlotte NC and told them I’m allergic to synthetic hair and that my scalp would break out in hives and guess what they put in my hair..... they jus want the money not your hair to grow. Stay mad if yu will
LOL I'm so guilty of brushing my locs!!! It works for me getting rid of surface lint during the winter months when I wear hats scarves and wool coats. Great tips as usual!
Yes, the African braiding shop looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for my hair to be washed🙄as well as using BLACK GEL IN MY LOCS!! 😱 I never went back!!
I use honey. my locks are shiny..my ends are open and could and my locks flow and are relatively soft. I have sister locks. I also use honey mixed with other ingredients on my clients. it is a natural bacteria video and fungicide.
+queenbeethatsme100 I feel that's ok for sisterlocks as they are so fine that there is not much of a middle for the honey to settle into. However, for thicker locs it is a big no-no as it will get lost in the voluptuous cascade.
Black gel left me build-up my first two months. I bought Jamaican Mango & Locking gel and it was good didn’t hold my retwist long. CANTU LOCKING GEL, is my official go to! I’m on month 6 and I’m pretty sure I’ll be using it for years for now on
Hey Gurl very informative video and that last part about mildew has put the fear of the loc gods in me lol...since summer is approaching us can you talk about how to care for your hair once leaving the beach(sand) and the pool (chlorine) so your locs remain CLEAN and healthy. Thanks!!!
Misscarmel149 the only advice with that is to rinse the sea water out of ur hair if ur not planning on washing it right then...like if u go to the beach daily and to add a lil conditioner to ur hair when going in the sun so theres something coating ur locs. I believe I alrdy made a beach time vid but I will look further
"Mrs Jessie mixing things in the bathtub!!!" Gurl you kill me! Keep up the amazing vids. Learning so much about my new dreads. any special tips for those with dyed hair? x
Jah Licia what about interlocking. ..can i stop it once my hair is almost 3 months old. my hair is soft but once it lock up... i want to just retwist it. the last setting of locks i had i tried it but it never stayed.
Love your energy. And I agree with everything you said. Thank you for sharing. Btw. People can take notes from you. You speak clearly and get right to the point. Awesome vid!
@@Melbrwn yes they do. And I use honey on mine. But I dilute it with water and use mix it with Shea butter. I wash it and condition it. Honey is better than beeswax.
Green dreads? Omg..I've had lock for two years and been doing em myself for about a year or so and i was worried i wasnt doing good cuz of some of the lint but man....im doing pretty decent compared to others
I'm so glad I watched this video. I had to find a new loc stylist bcuz the girl who originally twisted my hair used beeswax & this super thick black stuff & it was so sticky heavy & got all over everything!!! But now that I have a new stylist, I'm loving my locs so much more. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent video sis, i was going to a African hair salon when my wife couldn't do my hair & Yes!!! it's true these Africans never wash the hair so i always wondered was they using combs on my hair that wasn't washed lol!!
+TheVee909 AS A STYLIST IM TRYIN TO FIGURE WHO WANTS TO STYLE DIRTY HAIR..IT LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER WITH A FRESH WASH, BT SOME PPL JUS LAZY AND WANTS YOUR MONEY.
I love all this good information. My youngest daughter and I have been researching for about a year on how to have the healthiest locs. She finally is getting hers started on the 18th (2018), and I start mine at the end of the month. I couldn't believe my 10 yr old was so adamant about having locs. I thought it was all about her not wanting to get her hair done (she has very thick, coarse hair), but she loves them on her friend's hair and never has liked to wear her hair straight. The only way she has wanted me to style her hair for the past 4 years is the two strand twist. I wash her hair while they are still in twists, but I take each one down and remoisturize and retwist. She doesn't like the retwisting. She wants me to just moisturize and let it go, lol!
exohuman place a shirt over your head like you are about to take it off, pulling it up over your head, turning it inside out. keep it in that position. Tie a not at the end of the shirt. keeps the locks from touching your face while you sleep. I use a cooling t. bought it at Sam's club
I let my hair air dry, it takes 24 hours, but I put a towel on my pillow and dry it that way. I've been growing my locs for 10 years and I have never had a mildew smell, probably because I don't tie it up after washing. Love this video.
thank you so much!!! i learned to do locs by someone who used to have them and now im gonna make some changes as i have started and soley maintain my sons locs!!
Jah Licia, I love you. Found this vid while looking for ways of twisting my hair without any twisting product, and I love it. Funny enough my locs are about 17 inches long, and only now am I deciding to stop using twisting gel or moulding cream. Don't worry, it's not beeswax. Stopped that crap years ago. Thanks for busting the lint-free locs myth. My biggest nightmare that!!! Thanks for posting these vids.
love u back! Ur comment is the entire reason I have this channel. Its all trial and error and sharing hopefully prevents yall from doing what I did. I want yall locs to FLOURISH xoxo
Same here my hairs been fallinf out ever since i dyed it i have a afro in the middle of my hair i attempted to twist it last night tho i nearly died its alot of work
+Jah Licia I have a question about conditioning...I've only been loc'd for 13 months and I was told by the 'girl who re-twists my locs' (won't call her a loctician) that I should not use any type of conditioning products in my hair after washing. I have, however, heard otherwise from others. Since i'm new to the loc game and essentially know nothing, my question is, should I condition my locs? Would love to have your opinion :)
The ans is 2 fold. Is she washing and conditioning ur hair when u get it done? At 13 mths ur hair should be 70% locd so i dont see why conditioning is an issue? I say YES to conditioning because dry locs is not good at all. Pls responde cause i would love to know more
I love your 10 don'ts, but one of them I do regularly and its because of my job. I use a do-rag to cover my locs under my hard hat. Summer Winter Spring and Fall. I believe the hard hat stresses not only my locs but hair in general. and I sweat in my head, but as soon as I get off, I un-cover my locs and air dry.
See u air dry which makes it fine. U def have to wear ur hat but as long as ur hair gets to dry u wont get mold. Some ppl 24-7 covered up and thats a nono
Shae. R 😂, that make me think about bees nesting in your hair because of the honey, why on earth would I put honey in my hair? Can you say gooky, sticky icky mess?
Hi Jah, my 14 yr old daughter loves you, becuz when I retightened her locks I wet the locks first, she told me it didn't hurt (first time she ever told me that) I told Her that you said that was a no no"s retightening dry locks. Thanks a billion from both of us!! Godbless
This was a great video. You have a lot of personality. My locks are down to my lowerback but they are getting so thin at the roots. Sometimes I lose a whole lock. Should I just start over? Can they be saved?
love this video it was very helpful. ive been growing mine for a year .and those tips are so helpful and you are quite comedic. glad i watched your video before i started to brush my dreads everyday .
good lord i don't usually do that but yesterday God knows why ..probably cause i didn't want to wet the pillow i went to bed with a black headscarf while my hair was still damp ...after shampoo ...and i do brush my locs for a few months ..some advise it and other dont i was very suprised when i heard about it at first ..but well i bet you are right
You're right about the African shops and this is from my own personal experience. When I started my journey the second time around, someone recommended going to this braid shop and they charged less. Me being cheap, I tried them. Went there, they didn't wash my hair, used a comb that was full of other people's hair and gel which was disgusting, they put some product/gel in my hair that was flaky as hell. I washed my hair two weeks later cause I couldn't handle the mess and restarted with someone else who actually washed my hair. I would never go to another African shop. Luckily, I found someone who has taken great care of my hair and I am two yrs in.
I've had my dreads about 7 years. Those are good tips. I can't think of anything not to do. You seemed to cover it all. I know I feel more beautiful than I ever have. Being natural is freeing I think. I love how God made me. If anything don't listen to others. Some people tried talking me out of it.
Yasssss! They tried talkin me out of doing it too and those same ppl have locs now too. Best decision ever!!! Ty for sharing and watchin bew

hows ur journey going?
How is everything going?
I wear a du rag to bed and I tend to sweat overnight. Should I stop doing that and just rely on silky pillow cases?
yes if u can
exohuman place a shirt over your head like you are about to take it off, pulling it up over your head, turning it inside out. keep it in that position. Tie a not at the end of the shirt. keeps the locks from touching your face while you sleep. I use a cooling t. bought it at Sam's club
You are hilarious! Thanks for your tips. I brush down the shaft sometimes and honestly didn't know it damaged the locs! Won't be doing that again.
I use a lint brush to get off surface lint.
Thanks for the info....I happy to say I knew all the don't. I guess I'm taking great care of my babies
I tried to loc brush BC of a tutorial I felt silly while doing it but I won't be doing it anymore
Thank you!!!! Wonderful advice, you are to funny. Your hair is beautiful. People like you make me proud to be black.
Mattie t awwwww what a great statement! Thank u so much bew!
she aint lying

It was a braiding shop experience that led to my third big chop...yes ma'am. Thanks for this video. xxx
yw bew! braiding shops suck for locs
"Let it go let it go'! LMAO good info sis!
I let my hair air dry, it takes 24 hours, but I put a towel on my pillow and dry it that way. I've been growing my locs for 10 years and I have never had a mildew smell, probably because I don't tie it up after washing. Love this video.
+kellyhowful yayyyy thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info. Girl u are hilariously😄😄
Yw bew. Thanks so much
thank you so much!!! i learned to do locs by someone who used to have them and now im gonna make some changes as i have started and soley maintain my sons locs!!
Samantha Willie ur welcome bew
loll u are sooo funny with no beeswax.. let it go let it go 😂😂😂😂
i loved frozen can u tell? lol
I will be washing my hair more then I did and not retwist to tight
Wiz0 Music To Next Level great happy to hear that
You are very humorous lbs and gave the most accurate information. Thank you💯

I bleached my hair and it broke off my locs, so I would never again use chemical dye products in my hair.
Same here my hairs been fallinf out ever since i dyed it i have a afro in the middle of my hair i attempted to twist it last night tho i nearly died its alot of work
+musicallycreative24 both of u need aphrogee treatments immediately. check my what to do after u color vid

+Olive Garriques me too worst mistake of my life but the hair has grown back and longer
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you sister for sharing, I'm 6 months loced and loving it!
You're hilarious!
What other option do you recommend to use when youre starting the locking process if not beeswax or black gel?
Thanks for ALL the love & sharing this vid guys! Love yall ❤
Pls responde cause i would love to know more
She actually doesn't, normally tells me to wash the day before, or the morning of getting them re twisted, so yes they are re twisted dry :(
+Sandi Dunn oh helllls no!
jah licia empress you sound like a bajie....am i rite??
I love your 10 don'ts, but one of them I do regularly and its because of my job. I use a do-rag to cover my locs under my hard hat. Summer Winter Spring and Fall. I believe the hard hat stresses not only my locs but hair in general. and I sweat in my head, but as soon as I get off, I un-cover my locs and air dry.
See u air dry which makes it fine. U def have to wear ur hat but as long as ur hair gets to dry u wont get mold. Some ppl 24-7 covered up and thats a nono
omg the thought of putting honey in my dreads just makes me cringe. i never thought about putting honey near my hair at all
Shae. R 😂, that make me think about bees nesting in your hair because of the honey, why on earth would I put honey in my hair? Can you say gooky, sticky icky mess?
Good insights
I make hair mask with raw honey in it (not on my locs I just started them) but I did on my fro

yayyyyyy! Tell ur daughter I say "hey bew heyy" love her and u for watching! Anytime u need help holla at ya gurl xoxo
This was a great video. You have a lot of personality. My locks are down to my lowerback but they are getting so thin at the roots. Sometimes I lose a whole lock. Should I just start over? Can they be saved?
+Maria James-Thiaw hi thanks so much. they most def can be saved and also reattached
hi, you might be retwisting or Re locking too often or putting too much tension on the roots. A good hair dresser should be able to help
love this video it was very helpful. ive been growing mine for a year .and those tips are so helpful and you are quite comedic. glad i watched your video before i started to brush my dreads everyday .
+lanna iman hahaha thanks bew

Jah Licia I was wondering is crocheting your dreads ok to do

You're right about the African shops and this is from my own personal experience. When I started my journey the second time around, someone recommended going to this braid shop and they charged less. Me being cheap, I tried them. Went there, they didn't wash my hair, used a comb that was full of other people's hair and gel which was disgusting, they put some product/gel in my hair that was flaky as hell. I washed my hair two weeks later cause I couldn't handle the mess and restarted with someone else who actually washed my hair. I would never go to another African shop. Luckily, I found someone who has taken great care of my hair and I am two yrs in.
Frozen in time lmbo
