The last doser I got to run was a D9L with the flappy clutch paddles. Learned to run dozer on an old Clutch 7 Catapiller with a big clutch bar sticking up out of the beck and a pony motor to start the main engine.
The dozer technology has come a long way since those machines! I think most of the new generation doesn't even know what a pony motor is/does 😂

I'm GLAD I don't have to use one, but it's good to learn, since the site has a set of OLD CAT Dozers, a D4 and D7 that still has compression, and a D8 which sadly does not.

Something I do a lot if I'm doing cleanup on a fairly flat level pad is ill do all my final grade passes and pickup my winrows in a arc. It helps workout any small bumps and dips and make for a very clean final pass.

Great job on the video and sharing the knowledge as well. If you don't mind I would also like to add that "bump/drag steering" using the blade tilt to steer while bulking can also help a lot and is usually a little easier on the machine as well. Also too the track speed mode for the decelerator is only available on hydrostatic driven dozens as far as I know. Wish it was an option on conventional machines like the D6 it would be really awesome. Sorry man not trying to be critical or anything. Love your videos and seeing someone pass on the knowledge. You're not being critical at all brother! I appreciate the input and I should've specified that this option doesn't work on the larger dozers that are still driven by a traditional transmission. This feature will work on the D6K and D6T but not on the older D6N. I think anything beyond these dozers you move into a transmission and the option is no longer there. Great advice on the drag steering as well. This works great in the larger dozers with a 4 way blade where angle is off the table. Thanks for the input brother and I hope to hear from you soon!
Yesterday was my first day in a Cat D8… beautiful mechanical machine from the 1970s with mechanical linkages & no electronics! Love an old school D8!!
Blade steering in a slot doze works great. Yes you shed material off the side but you can I know that up on your next push. Only way to steer a D8 with a full blade is with your blade.
The bigger dozers run a bit different than their smaller brothers. While the concepts still apply, they are different enough that each has a bit of a learning curve.
My forestry d6c has 9 levers and 5 pedals in regular operation. As much as I love that beast, It's a workout.
Very valid point...you don't think. Everything just comes naturally, when you've been operating heavy equipment for years. 👍🏾

The decelerator mode he talks about will only work with a hydrostatic drive machine as he has there, a torque converter power shift transmission is not able to do that. On them the decelerator pedal is just that, a pedal to control RPMs.
Thanks for clarifying this for the new guys. I do make an assumption (which isn't always correct) that most guys will start in the smaller, hydrstat dozers.
Also one the newer Cat D7E. It's diesel/electric. I don't think you can use the pedal as a decelerator.
@@wailnshred Cat went way from electric drive in the latest D 7 and have gone back to Hi drive and power shift transmission but have got electric on the new D 6 XE and also on the new D 11 as well as JD have gone electric drive.

BUTTTTTTTTT:
Changing the function of the 'decelerator' is all very well - - - - -IF the machine that you're on has that facility. If it doesn't, ?????????????????????????? - - - - stick with the decelerator function and learn to use it as effectively as possible.
Cleaning up your windrows - the method that you described is also all very well - - - - IF you happen to have a power angle and tilt blade. If you don't, ??????????????? - - - - - chase your windrows up on the side that you want to take the material AWAY from and then - ASSUMING that you at least have a tilt cylinder - tilt the blade down on the side that you want to turn TO and load that track up to help you turn.
Slowing the machine down to gain better traction for turning????? Again, IF you have a tilt cylinder on the blade, tilt it down a little on the side to which you want to turn to assist with the turn. If you do this with the bulk of your windrows, you can then use the last of your cleanup to finish shaping the stockpile or trimming the area at the end.
Once again, thanks for the video. I am all about sharing what information and ideas that I have gathered with those coming behind me and I'm glad to see others doing likewise.

Good information and you are correct on all fronts. I try to teach the equipment that I'm on in the video vs. trying to cover all of the other possibilities so the videos don't get too long. I appreciate the comment and the information!

I appreciate the constraints of making videos like this and trying to keep them short and to the point. It would pretty much be a lifetime's work to cover ALL the different tips-n-tricks for ALL the different makes, models and types of machines.
In the meantime, all the 'noo-fangled' electronic gear like pre-setable slope and grade control and 3D GPS, etc., are taking a LOTTTTA the fun out of operating.

I’ve ran larger clutch dozers for years and recently had to run a new d6 6way with the pedal set to ground speed it really messed with me I honestly hated it,plus it was the first time running a 6way. thanks for explaining it all makes sense now. Next time I hope I can figure out how to switch it over to decelerater now that I know you can.
Back in the mid 80s I was working at a gold mine running a D9G. When stripping off the overburden I would use what I called a series of funnel and trough systems so that I was using the windrows of the trough to allow me to carry more material in front of the blade without loosing it. I could pick up a good load in low gear then shift to higher to carry the material in the trough. I still had to turn a little using the clutches, but once in the trough, it was straight ahead. At a different mine a friend taught me how to turn by tilting the blade. Those old cats didn't have powered angle dozer blades, but the tilt feature worked great.
Yes its called slot dozing and with a full blade you should only steer by using blade shift, too hard on the drives otherwise
Thanks for that first tip. When you’re cutting swales with GPS your first instinct is to decelerate to let the hydraulics catch up to the rapid change. Doesn’t work great because the hydros are slower because the engine speed slows. Just slowing tracks would work great. Thanks man!

Thanks for the deceleration pedal tip. I run a d5k and I usually just run wide open I'm heavy pushes and go up or down in the transmission gearing to increase torque and reduce track speed. I will definitely be trying that setting thought. I'll be curious to see if It works the same way.

Great content Bryan! Keep it up! I would add, when I'm bulking material on a dozer, I like to tilt my blade up or down just a little bit to help me turn one way or the other.
I only ran a small dozer once for a few minutes, so I know absolutely nothing, but what you're saying kinda makes sense.
Good tip Merrick! That's another way to help you turn. I'll use this technique as well when I'm doing heavy bulking.
In softer materials like dirt I often take care of small widrows by running them over with the tracks.

Enjoying the videos. Also you can steer by dropping the blade a little on the side you want to steer to.
To an extent you can do that. When you have a 6-way blade it's easier to use the blade angle to steer the machine. Thanks for watching!

I couldn't find the option would it be in my profile settings or machine settings? Also, I was wondering, is it OK to turn the blade during a heavy push? I've always inchwormed around tight turns during a push to both lose only a little material and precut the inside of the turn. I'm wondering if I shouldn't do that. By inchworming I mean turning the blade away from the turn then back into it.

Would be fun to try a dozer, have seen a dozer mayby 5 times my whole life. That is kinda weird when i've been playing with dirt for 20 years.

I really wish skiddies with foot throttle would have an option for Decel. Maybe some of them do, but I've never heard of it/found the switch. Leaving a skid on low throttle and pressing to go fast doesn't really fit great into any workflow I've found. maybe just make it a treadle, with the neutral position set by the sticky throttle. As an inexperienced operator and an engineering dropout, I might be way off base, but I digress.
What you're describing sounds like an "inching" pedal, and it feels to me like it should be on the left, like on some loaders and forky bois.
To my knowledge most of the newer machines have that feature. On my CAT you can dial the throttle with a turn knob and then use the pedal as a decelerator or leave the throttle knob turned down and use the pedal as an accelerator.
As Finkle said, some of the newer machines are starting to incorporate this feature. I agree with you, the acceleration pedal has never really worked for me in a skid.

Good point! I think there's a lot of this industry that is under the impression they are operators when in reality they are just seat warmers. Good eye, this was a 5k!
I have Never operate a Dozer and it looks Difficult.do you drive and steer like a skid steer with one hand?
The newer dozers are hydrostatic and are controlled like a skid. Older machines used steering clutches and brakes. These could be setup with separate handles that controlled the tracks or finger paddles. Those machines are getting more and more rare.
I was told a xl dozer will push more than a lgp is that true?
In dry conditions on firm ground this is 100% true. The LGP tracks spread the weight of the machine out which prevents it from digging in hard and getting great traction. If you notice, larger machines like the D10 and D11 are always in an XL configuration because they are pushing in firm conditions and they are made to push a phenomenal amount of material.

Why not just slow your track speed with the thumb controls and maintain engine power
Because I like being able to use my thumb at the end of the day. I can't have my thumb looking like the hulk while the rest of my fingers look like computer programers...
