Can you please tell me how your layer labeling works please I usually label mine as Base->Shade Reference->Shade (Clipping layer)->Outline and the names are usually to big for my app's layer system.
My best tip is to avoid just simply darkening the color! Skin has a lot of colors, shift around hue for shadows and lights! (For shadows I tend to lead darker and more towards red)
It depends upon what kind of mood you are going for. If you already drew a character with a lot if warm tones , u will need to do shadows in more of a blue or purple hue, to balance the whole illustration. It's the vice versa if you created a character with cold tones.
Gosh it was reaaally helpful ! usually such tutorials just say “use ur layers” or “colors should be matching and contrasting” but from this one I really got some good info, thanks!
I'd assume it would depend on both the blood/organs of the character in addition to skin tone as well. A blue skin character could look more Harmonious with blue SSS (especially if they have blue blood) but at the same time, I've seen illustrations of characters with blue or gray skin tones who had red/pink SSS that looked both life like and dead at the same time so it may depend on the mood of the piece. That said, blue blood will definitely affect SSS. What I do know for sure is that Tarantulas actually (and other insects/arachnids, but I've got tarantulas and they are large enough to actually see things like this occurring so I'm most familiar in terms of tarantulas) have naturally occurring blue blood. After they molt their exoskeleton, they become near translucent and look a pale blueish/greenish with a very cool ghostly type of effect. If you're not too afraid of spiders to look this up, studying how light casts through freshly molted tarantulas gives a very interesting perspective on how this occurs in nature and how it might affect SSS in a humanoid creature with blue blood
I'm a year late but i believe it's not caused by blood at all! Among all the colors, red has the longest light waves, and is the only one long enough to be seen through skin
This probably sounds stupid but I’ve been doing digital art for 4 years now, and I’m honestly not very good. But your videos have helped so much, thankyou.
I love your tutorials 🥰 Can you please break this topic down even further by making separate tutorials for: *1)* *Specular Highlights* (How would you color *glossy surfaces?* What color should the specular highlights be in different lighting scenarios? How should we *color-pick* the color for specular highlights? Specular Highlights need to be bright, but I doubt they should be white. So, how should we determine the best color for them?) *2)* How should we paint *Bounce Light?* *3)* How should we paint *Subsurface Scattering?* I feel that these topics deserve their own videos.
I am horrible at adding shadows and general dimension to anything. I’m working on it though. I grew up focusing entirely on anatomy and making sure you could tell what a person is feeling in my drawings. So I’m realllyyy good at drawing characters but I suck at backgrounds, shading, and I’m only now getting good at color.
Hello ! As a beginner, I find your tutorials really helpful, I couldn't thank you enough ♥ I have a question, if any good souls here are willing to lose some time for me... my character is a blue skinned tiefling. So I was wondering, what color should I use for Subsurface Scattering ? Thank you in advance ! It'd help me a lot !
why are the best vids when it comes to little important details like this so hard to find? Anyways, thanks for doing this video, it was really helpful. Keep up the great work!

Rainbow Owl and Cilantro Disser, Thank u so much! I used this in ibis paint yesterday and it worked! And now I can change my lineart easily so thank u :D
bro is the "square" brush customized, cuz i cant find it on the app :^ ... o-o i thought that u couldnt customize great brushed on medibang but this one seems pretty cool to me :')
I know this is a year old- but you can add a clipping layer on top of your Medibang folder! You just need to set the folders blend mode from “pass through” to “normal”!

the way she just perfectly made highlights so quickly too at 5:09
the satisfaction of watching them go on
Question, and yes I’m a year late…but how do you know what color to add shadows with? With different skin colors?..
Hi! I'm not her but you can search for LavenderTowne, I think she made a video about it!
My best tip is to avoid just simply darkening the color! Skin has a lot of colors, shift around hue for shadows and lights! (For shadows I tend to lead darker and more towards red)
@@kmdraws64 Yeah, I also do that, the drawings get really lively :3

You can also balance the tones, by playing around till you feel it's good enough.
you can actually clip to folders if you set the folder blend mode to “normal” :-)
THIS IS A TIME SAVIOUR
How? Whenever I clip different layer modes in a folder to another folder the effects change
I've always wondered how people get that kind of shading! Thanks, this is so nice and easy to understand

would subsurface scattering depend on blood color?
say you had a character with blue blood, organs, etc. would their subsurface scattering be blue?
@Insomnia_Gaming rad thanks

This was so informative! And you work so fast omg
I love how I can’t even tell if this is a speed paint or live sometimes
Also the harp thing is called I lyre, I used to just call it a tiny harp lol
I'm struggling so hard with shading right now, so this is absolutely perfect timing
This video was so helpful !! Love to see more of these videos

OMG thanks!! I could not find a video tutorial in drawing chiaroscuro anywhere!!!
YOU ABSOLUTE GODSEND TY!!
Thank you, this was extremely helpful
tysmm my art has never been this good
Omg this is sooooo useful tysm!!!
How would you do subsurface scattering for things like fur? What colors would you use for that, instead of red if the fur is gray, for example.

Is using the color red for the mid tone something done with all skin tones?
It should be a reddish colour, but not exactly red as it would be too strong. Searching up references and experimenting will definitely help!
What color value is best for the shadow? Also great video!!!
lavendertowne made a video on it!

I can't be the only one who prefers the before
Yeah, I enjoy that more cartoonish style
Both are good ig, she was just teaching how to "level up"
What about a style where you outline the shaded region with a fairly small outline. Can you still keep a dynamic feel even with the outlines?
How do you change the color of the line work on ibis paint to make it look more soft?
Ibis paint x actually has an alpha lock option or you could just use a clipping layer !
alpha lock or you can make a clipping layer on top of the lineart!
Rainbow Owl and Cilantro Disser,
Thank u so much! I used this in ibis paint yesterday and it worked! And now I can change my lineart easily so thank u :D
This is very late but... Does this work with a more painterly/blended style of shading? I don't tend to do the solid line shading
I think so
yes
My main character is made outa metal would the little bit of red in the shadows still work or should I make the colour like a light grey or blue
How are you blending everything man? I’m new to this so it’s rough.
bro is the "square" brush customized, cuz i cant find it on the app :^ ... o-o i thought that u couldnt customize great brushed on medibang but this one seems pretty cool to me :')
Would be nice if you could explain your layer setup. 😐

You don't use CSP anymore?
This video was edited from one of our livestreams, which are always taught in MediBang as it's a more accessible free program!
@@wingedcanvas Ahh okay. Do you personally still use CSP?
Yeah many of our instructors use CSP! It's It's great program that's affordable and you can animate with it!
Awesome but the reflex on the hair is not a thing I'd do in my art
it’s something i do in my art :)
I artbook and sketchbook don‘t have folders. 😂 so I try to don‘t make to much layers.
why did she say she hates gradients?
**cries in mobile IbisPaint**
ibis has all of those options though? i’ve used it for years
usually this channel has very good tutorials but i wouldn't even call this a tutorial. it doesn't explain anything?
no but its basically showing how to do it idk
yes it does?
Please give the character shoes next time. That's so gross!!
