- OK, so Adam Savage didn't experience a flood, exactly. But we noticed a certain pattern in the responses to our Starfield video ( • Adam Savage Builds a R... ) ... comments like, "Did Adam put a smurf on the lathe? His hands are all blue." (@michaelholmstrom7677) and, "How do you know someone murdered a blue blooded creature without them telling you they murdered one!?"(@adamalander7515) The good news is, no blue lives were lost. Here's what happened.

Adam... I like the toilet idea better!
How you got a laugh....
this moment when something just goes wrong... we think we know why it happend and don't want it to happen and then make it happen again... by simply doing something we know is not the way to go... we all have been there I would say... and we all deal different with it... you simply had the best reaction by actually smiling and perhaps thinking something we better don't know Adam... nice idea sharing this moment with us
Someone Set you up!
There's a certain point you reach in the workshop that you decide to repaint your Vise to match it's stains.
Time for a Blue Vise!
I’m afraid I just blue myself
Sometimes the only thing to do is accept the failure and laugh. I laughed out loud as I watched you move through the different stages of acceptance etc. I appreciate your humility Adam.
Not only the emotion train, but the instinct to adjust the camera so we can share it all with him. What a pro!
for years they've plotted their revenge, at last it was time for the red marking fluid to strike, sabotaging all the bottles in his supply of blue fluid
The first step is acceptance. 😂
@@davidvaillancourt1263 That was basically a "y'all see this mess I made?" that he gave us. Basically a question
Everyone has had moments like that, with varying degrees of severity. All you can do is let out a sigh move forward.
I love that you had that moment where you just stood there realizing that there was nothing more you could to to stop the spill. No point panicking, it was just done. And then its time to clean up.
And had the humility to take a beat and laugh.
@@ericscottfitzgerald6490 That's the most important step :)
The moment spent considering how to react and then choosing to laugh is the best.
I'm sure this is far from the first time he's had something like this happen to him.
There's the video where he's building the ping pong ball shooting machine and he has a _"pause for a moment because I feel a little dumb"_ speech where he talks through the emotions of a moment JUST like this. It's one I always think back on when having those sorts of moments myself and you can feel the same cycle in this one.
This is easily one of the most relatable moments I’ve seen on this channel. I’ve had so many projects get sidetracked by one silly, frustrating thing after another. Your ability to laugh it off and move on quickly not only shows your experience and maturity, but it also sets a stellar example for everyone watching.
The look there is one I know well.
Something you do without thinking immediately backfires and you then stand there with that look on your face wondering to yourself how you ever thought it was a good idea. Love it.
I love that surpassingly relatable pause after the bluing goes everywhere. It's that moment of mental static where the brain just goes "Ummm...well, that happened. Now, uh, I can...I should...fix...yeah...yeah, okay, I can kinda fix this. Probably."
Well, the good news is that the piece was sufficiently covered
Thats what i thought also 😂😂❤
Sufficient coverage definitely achieved. If this had been me air would definitely have turned blue aswell
I only laugh, because I've been there! Only to be there again min/sec later.
Simple humans.
And, it's a very lovely blue color. Win. Win.
My go to reaction when I'm annoyed but not mad at the situation is to start muttering like Yosemite Sam.
Also, superb blue shop color. Adds to the...colored history of this shop has been enhanced.
This is what makes Adam a national treasure. He not only admits his mistakes- he does breakdowns!
That look to the camera when he spilled it the second time 😂
I don't know how he kept his composure through that. God knows every curse word in the dictionary and some made up ones would be coming out in a constant stream from my mouth for the next 5 minutes if that happened to me.
@@vonoostenstein You and me, You and me both! That !FACE! he made was the thing that made my week wholesome today xD
But well an Editor and some *bleep*ing surely was involved, but yeah Adam is a saint like that… isn't he?
@@vonoostenstein I'm sure the editing he'd have to do to clean up for youtube had something to do with it.. :P
@@Luziferne OH heck no. I hope Adam is never sainted. You need to be dead to be a saint.. :P
@@vonoostenstein There are different kinds of people I guess. I'm more like Adam. When stuff like that happens to me I'm standing there for a few seconds, thinking to myself, damn I'm stupid.... then I sigh deeply and get to work cleaning things up. Like a couple weeks ago when I spilled a whole jar of pickles across half my kitchen 😢
It was magnificent. The range of emotions shown in Adam's face. Surprise, panic, control, reflexion, analysis, excitement, confusion, shock, despair, regret, shame, joy, and panic again. Truly amazing
I would just like to say - as someone who has always struggled with mistakes (mostly my own fears of making mistakes) - your honesty and willingness to show the world your mistakes has helped me so much over the years. I've even taken it upon myself to help others embrace their mistakes and learn that the road to success is paved with a lifetime of previous mistakes.
I love that Adam didn't spend time getting outwardly angry or frustrated with the situation. He digested the mistake and moved forward healthily. A good lesson for some like myself
I think there was one second where he embraced the anger and then released it. The second time when he squeezed the bottle, he looked straight at the camera and you can see the cartoon censored expletives pass through his mind, before he laughs and goes into clean up mode.
Anyone that spent a lot of time cleaning a fuckup and then fucking up will get angry a little, the thing is Adam realized in less than 2 seconds what was wrong and blame himself and not the crappy bottle, and after learning he immediately laughs about his own error.
Yikes, that sucked. Dykem is too expensive for me. I use a blue magic marker.
I'm guessing it has to do with years of experience being on camera. Seeing yourself raging after the fact is probably not a good look, especially knowing other people are seeing it too, so I'm sure he's learned to temper his reactions quite effectively.
It seems almost like at 5:10 to 5:20 he's holding his breath and counting to ten, maybe that's how he deals?
me too
I know this was frustrating for Adam, but his reaction is really something I am trying to emulate. I would have gotten very angry and been irritated for awhile. Adam has talked about this before, but he let him self experience the frustration for a moment, let it pass, laughed about it, and then got to work cleaning it up. Watching this example from Adam truly shows it is possible to get there.
I've been watching Alec Steele's blacksmithing channel for years (highly recommend, he's very entertaining and watching blacksmithing in progress is super satisfying) and he uses this constantly, but I never really understood that actual point of it. Thanks for the explainer Adam!
🎶Blue Dyykeeeeem🎶
I loved when Adam did the second thing and then had to stand there and try to not say anything that couldn't be on camera. I admire your fortitude. You had the best saving throw possible on that encounter by not getting it splashed on you further. It would be my luck that I would have absent-mindedly started that project wearing a white shirt and light-colored pants.
Even though you knew it was coming, the moment the bottle exploded and he paused to look at the camera... laughed so hard.
Me too. The expressions crossing his face were priceless! When he finally reaches the point where the only thing left to do is laugh it started me laughing all over again.
That facial expression when the marker shot off was amazing. I haven't seen a better expression of the combination of elemental rage, disappointment, and the realization that you were going to have to buy more of that, expressed before. I literally laughed out loud.
How endearing that, after a moment of hesitation you realize the absurdity of the situation and start with a short laughter. That is the reason why after all those years I still love watching you. You willingness to be positive. Thank you
The journey from silent rage to defeated and overwhelmed laughter on Adam's face is just... its something.
"like I was trying to fish my watch from an airplane toilet.." I would have gone with "field dress a Smurf" but different strokes... On another note, we need a supercut of all the dumb shop mistakes over the years. I find them extremely encouraging as a maker. One of the things I wish I could have learned sooner was how to handle being my own worst enemy in the shop sometimes. Adam sets a great example of how to laugh at yourself and keep on making.
Or blue man group's proctologist
Not swearing when that happened, especially twice, is the most professional TV presenter thing I've seen Adam do!
That second spill is comedy gold. Adam's reaction timing is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
That should be a demerit badge if it wasn't one already.
Thank you, Adam, for this. I think it's very important for young makers and veteran makers to see someone at the top of their game still have these moments😂
5:50 Adam is trying to clean the crime scene after brutally killing a smurf
This made the start to my morning ! I needed a good laugh ! Loved how you pulled the camera over towards yourself and looked right at it with a scowl. Then laughed it off. No Smurfs where harmed during the filming of this episode.
No Smurfs were harmed during this episode.... but before it-where do you think they GET that blue liquid from...? Poor Papa Smurf!
You say that, but blue layout fluid could well be just ground up Smurfs in solution .....
I knew it was coming and it was still hilarious!
The look on your face, the second time was classic. It had me laughing & crying uncontrollably in my chair.🤣
Thank you sooooo much for that moment.👍
At school in the metalwork classes we used this for many practical jokes. It was called Engineers Blue & got me into do much trouble.
Thanks again for the memories, you are the best. 🙂👍
The "pop" it makes when he squeezes and the marker comes out and the fluid spills everywhere should win an award for best comic timing.
I love that Adam is able to laugh at himself after the second mishap, even knowing (as I'm sure he did) how much cleanup was in his immediate future.
The look on his face said thousands of words.
That's one of those situations where the only thing that you can do is laugh. ESPECIALLY when it happens the 2nd time.
It's a laugh or cry moment. I think Adam did a little of both.
Yup happened to me too. But it was green. Had a date three hours later that day. At least I had something to start the conversation, she was in tears. 20 years later we are still married.
i have so much respect for Adam, not only did i grow up with him entertaining me but as a roll model he has taught me its better to make mistakes and own them than it is to let them hurt our ego
I am SO sorry for laughing at the explosion of marking fluid, Adam! But the *pop* followed by your expression...priceless!
My first thought of the blue hand was “Has Adam been on a deep underwater oil rig?”
More importantly, It’s relatable when even someone with years experience makes the same kind of logical mistakes that I would have, there is something about this that is very forgiving knowing that it really can happen to anyone anytime.
Haha! Me too! I just watched The Abyss again yesterday!
Demerit Badge righteously earned 😂
The same thing happened to me and it’s the reason a corner of my wood workbench has some permanent blue details
Just had a room full of people turn and look at me in confusion when I suddenly started busting out in after. When you give the bottle the extra squeeze and the top popped off, I about died. that situation along with many others I've seen over the years watching you are familiar to the the things that happen to me. Have gone through simular thing helps me relate to the frustration, but also allows me to enjoy in the knowledge that it does happen other people too. Thank you for sharing all thee good and bad.
OMG - I love it! Adam, When I was a kid I thought it would be awesome to smash a can of metallic blue spray paint between two granite cobble stones. So I carefully placed the first stone on the ground, set the full can of spray paint on top, on it's side, facing away from me (for safety of course), and then proceeded to take the 2nd cobble stone and as hard as a 13 year old could, smash it down (from over my head) on to the can of spray paint. Needless to say my plan (and the can of spray paint) backfired and the next thing I know, I've become a deep metallic blue Smurf. Almost the same color as your ink. I was covered from head to toe in blue and it took me hours and lots of turpentine to get it off. The blue was still in my hair weeks later. So take solace that someone out there had an even worse experience with Blue. Thanks for the great video and wonderful memory flash back. PS... My Mom's reaction was priceless. :-) All the best.
As others have said: this is why you're a national treasure. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you for the super thanks and your comment!
We seriously need a badge for this. Maybe squeezed too hard? 😂
@@wildflower1397 Maybe just a blue circle with white text inside "Myself"
I saw that marker bottle and I knew instantly exactly what had happened. A coworker of mine once spilled a bottle of red marking fluid all over our shop's surface plate in that exact same manner.
About 2 months ago I spilt a whole bottle of blue dykem all over my company's white shop floor.
Thanks, Adam, for the most heartfelt belly-laugh I've had in a long time. We humans are regrettably hard-wired to snicker at the misfortunes of others, but when it happens twice in succession, it's impossible to help but ROFL. :)
Honestly, seeing you make a mistake that was entirely your own fault (the second mess) and react by recognising and laughing at the result is really great to see. I grew up in an environment that wasn't nearly as healthy so seeing positive reactions is encouraging and helps me recognise how to be better, myself.
Thanks for sharing!
That "Oh no, I made it worse" expression is priceless.
I had an idea that there was a mishap with Dykem, but this is far more amusing than I would have thought. That moment after the second spill when you looked at the camera was priceless. It managed to get a good solid laugh out of me this morning.
They make similar little bottles of tempera paint for preschoolers, which my school of course buys for our classrooms, and they seem so lovely when you first open them up, but the glue that keeps the little cap fixed on inevitably fails at the worst possible moment, and long before the paint inside is used up.
Watching this, I feel a ringing sense of solidarity with you, Adam. I've done that many a time- though I imagine fingerpaint is not nearly as annoying to clean up as bluing fluid.
This is why I love Tested in the videos they aren't afraid to show mistakes that can happen to anyone
Adam, This is exactly why I have been using a Sharpie for 20 plus years. Dykem is very messy plus when you use it in a grinding application it flakes off before you are blended to the surface. I am very impressed with the way you kept your composer on the second go round.
I think it’s safe to say that that particular option is no longer Adam’s favorite for dispensing marker fluid? Also, I just want to recognize the amazing amount of control he exhibited by not using a profuse amount of profanity. If it had been me, sailors would’ve been blushing for miles.
Adam is a media professional. Sure, the profanity could be fixed in edit, but sometimes you might be live.
You would have turned the air blue!
That would have just added to the mess.
sadly me too-I'm not proud of my anger and swearing -i am working on it- it's hard for sure!
I feel like any maker/operator has had that expression right after the cap flew off the second time @5:16
I'm totally impressed by Adam's transition from the initial look of thunder, to accepting the situation and being able to laugh about it while switching gears to cleanup mode.
I love this... Having a bad case of Shadenfreude. So good to see even experts with literal decades of making experience have things like this happen.
I just belly laughed when you squeezed the top off because I can absolutely see me doing the exact same thing.
I'm sorry I laughed entirely too hard at the second one 😂 thanks for sharing Adam!
Its kinda comforting to someone have the same kind of silly accidents I've had in the machine shop.
That monumental decision to laugh or to cry. Laughing is often best.
I've seen you use the marking fluid before. You just used a tad too much 😂 you're reaction on the second time was classic! So funny! I think a custom designed fluid dispenser would a great next one day build.
I'm sorry but I had to laugh hysterically when you squeezed the tip off the bottle lol
Totally me, anytime I try to do a project.. Glad to see that you are human too. ❤❤
I really love that you share goods and bads with us. Thank you for all.
If you have Dykem in the shop, you gotta have Dykem remover. I’ve had disasters before as well. A dropped bottle is like a grenade when it blows up. Thanks for sharing!
As someone who is waiting patiently for The Abyss on Blu-ray and digital: "Bud, you know your hand is blue???"
Sorry, couldn't resist. 🙂
Cameron must love this stuff! In Avatar he painted an entire species blue... 😆
The way you just stopped and assessed what had happened the second time was so damn relatable. 😂 Good stuff man.
Even though you told us what was going to happen when you squeezed it, I still found myself yelling "DON'T DO IT" at the screen, as though that was going to change the outcome. Geniune LOL.
You made a video all about Dykem marking fluid but didn’t mention R2-D2’s paint job?!
Oh man, i feel your pain. I had the same happen to me with red printer ink. I was covered in it. With the the red inkt dripping from my face. Just when a costumer walked in, and ran out again. The shop must have looked like a butcher shop where the butcher just lost a fight with a bull.
I was a US Navy Machinist's Mate for 20 years. I used Prussian Blue regularly in my job as a match marker for metal surface work, such as inspecting and repairing bearings and valve seats. Seeing this brought back memories, for sure.
That moments pause after you squeezed it is *priceless*. I don’t know how many times I’ve done something and instantly had that “of course that just happened, I don’t know what else I was expecting” moment 😂
I've had the red marking fluid run from my hand to my elbow and didn't notice it right away until a co-worker asked me if I was bleeding. Luckily the stuff comes off with rubbing alcohol.
Adam's ability to not swear whenever that happens is inspiring 😅
That reaction is priceless. Just sheer “aww crap” lol.
I use bingo daubers to apply layout fluid. I’ve never had one separate like that.
Brilliant!!!! Thank you Adam you have made my day. It happens to the best of us ;)
The feeling when you do the stupid thing, knowing it's stupid but do it anyway. That feeling is perfectly encapsulated by Adam turning the camera on to himself and just standing there
That feeling tends to happen at the drill press, when you think you can hold the part, but is proven wrong seconds later.
It took me many years to do the risk / time benefit assessment better.
The moment where Adam just stood and looked at the camera, I totally related to that. It actually made me anxious even though I didn't need to clean it up.
One of the many things I love about Adam! He has a level head and can control himself in a dignified and good humored way! One of the many attributes that you encourage me to be better in! Thanks Adam!
Watching Adam almost turn himself into a Blue Meanie was just hysterical. 😂
Something similar happened to me the other day. I had a Dollar Tree tube of super glue and the cap must have been adhered to the tube. So, as normal, I take pliers and try to break the weld and loosen the cap. The cheap tube tore and super glue went all over my left hand. It was COVERED!! FML! 😂
Can you move your fingers yet or are they still stuck together
@goodgremlinmedia2757 Haha. Just two stuck together fortunately and I was able to separate them quickly. The pain was washing my hands for like a half hour with Lava soap and a scouring pad. FML.
Adam Savage has the best ever "Sad Laugh". It's so iconic!
I love seeing the reaction of making a mistake from the outside, I know when I am fixing or making something and mistakes are made you stop for a moment and take in the situation. Then laugh it off. You sir are a true person of greatness.
I absolutely love this. I am an optimist but I am surrounded by pessimists and I think about the distinction often. The pessimists see optimists as somewhat delusional, like we don't see the issues, but NO, it's that we see it, we accept it, and we move on to what we can do rather than rail at the universal cruelty that caused the marker to mock you, not once, but twice!
Brings a whole new set of ideas for the term blue blood 😂 thankfully you're ok.
I haven't had soooo much fun at someone else's expense in a long time, thank you!!!
Thank you, I needed that. You are the best Adam .The innocents . Oh My
It seems like most of the time when I see marking fluid used in videos it is applied with a brush. I'm sure that method has its drawbacks as well, but is probably a lot less likely to spill.
A friend of mine is a machinist, and he put a dab of Dykem behind a door handle to find out who was stealing. It worked. The theif was caught red handed. I mean blue handed.
dries pretty quick.
Adam- THANK YOU. I needed a good laugh after being sick the last couple days. It was sooooo funny because I see myself doing that. Your reaction is priceless because at that point there’s nothing to do but laugh and clean up. Thanks, and keep being you. You rock.
I got way more enjoyment from that second spill than I thought I would 😂. Thanks for sharing.
That really has to go in a bloopers reel! Looking forward to seeing a blooper reel. Steve
Oh hell yes, I love blooper reels 😂
😂 I commend you Adam for laughing at yourself. Serious professional composure.
That right there, the moment it all poured out is the story of my life.
great of you to post this video. i was definitely asking myself that question while watching the spaceship video
We use a similar product in the UK. It’s good for the jobs you described but also for checking interference fits etc. The one we use is called Stuarts Micrometer Engineers Marking. Ours is like a paste in a small circular tine. It gets everywhere… lol
Stuarts is what we'd call just "prussian blue" in the US. (Prussian blue is really just the pigment; the product in question is actually that pigment held in a non-drying oil, so like oil paint that will never cure.) I've never heard of it being used for marking, because it's so susceptible to smearing, but it's definitely used to assess the consistency of an interference-type fit.
Thank you so much for sharing this Adam! It's, in a way, nice to know that even the best go through absolute bullshit lol
I admire so much how relatable you are 💜
Love your calmness. It's clear as we all know you've been doing this for decades and you had your fair share of "spills". But I love how you were like "ok, this just happened" "frak".
Even with the explanation before seeing it, that was FUNNY ! Your reaction was GOLD. I've had that exact expression on my face several times in my life. Your ability to refrain from the same sting of expletives that would have spewed forth from my mouth is commendable.
I don't remember where I heard the phrase "comedy is YOU falling down the stairs, tragedy is ME falling down the stairs".
I think those stairs just got stained blue.
I’ve knocked a while container over coming back to dip the brush. I love that you show the little mistakes or mishaps that happen. It makes me feel like, if this happens to Adam, I’m not a complete idiot lol.
When the cap pops off the second time I could hear the litany of curses and swear words going through Adams head from here XD
LOL - I enjoy watching Adam's adventures SO much.
thanks for sharing sir.
gentian violet. one of the best RUclips scenes I have ever seen is Adam standing looking at the second mess. thank you
OMG ! You had me laughing so hard I'm crying. The pause after you squeezed the marker tip off the bottle at 5:10 in the video still brings me to tears. I needed that today thanks
This is the truest, most honest video on the subject of learning (or not) from one's mistakes I have ever seen! Thanks so much for sharing your (small) tragedies along with your triumphs! Thank you for sharing your humanity with us.
This was beautiful, thank you
Dang... along with all the talent and skill and accomplishment, he really is human! Thanks, man. You are a constant inspiration.
Glad to see I am not the only one who struggles with this type of stuff.
Oh Adam! That is exactly the melon-noodle a move I would have pulled off. Dykem is unforgiving in blue errors. It slayed me, slowing that second one down. highest quality entertainment.
Love this video! Such a real moment, and it gives hope for us mortals that nobody's perfect! 😅
