Thank you for the content you create. I am thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. I adopted a Portuguese rescue dog at the start of the year and will be going wild camping with him soon now that he has settled in. I live 20mins away from Dartmoor National Park so I am very spoilt for wild camping spots
Very nice walk that Paul, some great sights to be had on this one. 7kg, that’s bloody light. As always a very enjoyable video, cheers for sharing, Ant.
Cheers Paul your a different class mate i manage to watch all your videos right the whole way through no fast forwarding ,plus ur reviews are always bang on ,cheers mate keep up the good work and stay 💪💪👊👌
Mam Tor was busy when I went there last summer. If you walk more than 10 minutes away though it gets quiet! I walked in the opposite direction to you when I was there. Thanks for making the effort to make videos.
Hi Paul, I think this is my favourite of all your videos, selecting the best lightweight equipment for a good distance hike. Your videos are so informative and I've been buying a lot of my equipment based on your reviews. You're always welcome down to West Cornwall for a good camping and hiking trip.
Super video! Impressive kit too, I remember as a school kid walking around Edale. Its great how the trails have been improved and cloths, food and equipment so very much improved. It almost looks like it could be fun these days 😉
Brother and I did that route along Rushup edge a few years back when it was still a long march through boggy land, which we did in very wet windy weather. Glad to know they had laid stones since then!
Thanks for the update Paul, good vid. One of my favourite walks that. Never seen it so busy! Intrigued by the Sawyer squeeze so might have to replace my mini now as well! Like the look of the Osprey, we're doing the Freedom trail across the Pyrenees in the summer so might be a good choice to replace my kestrel. Good shout on the minstrels but no good with my dogs!
The squeeze is definitely better than the other small filters such as the mini and trailshot. That's a coincidence...I've just had a new quilt arrive from the pyrenees today. As Tucas climashield. Looking forward to testing that.
Just checked the prices online...ouch! Might have trouble justifying those 😞. Looking forward to the Pyrenees so training hard - did Offas dyke circuit from Llanthony Abbey on Sat in a oner 28k 6.5hrs so always good to catch the vids for motivation 😁
I was around mam tor last weekend, on the 'road to nowhere'. Its only half the hill it was from the 1800's. Great video, as usual Paul. Thanks for sharing 😊
Besides tent & quilt I am using almost the same setup. I'd agree the Levity 45 disappears on your back. I'd also agree with your assessment on M&Ms. I am going to have to check out Summit to Eat - never seen freeze dried salmon as a selection before.
I've not tried every dehydrated brand but since I came across summit to eat, I always go with that now. They taste like a real meal which is what you need after a hike. what tent and quilt do you have?
Enjoyed your hike and gear talk through , liking the bag Paul it looks the dogs ..... That little sawyer certainly has a great flow rate.. I always carry jelly babies with me for my sugar rush and have my choccy with a little drink. Nice too see Andy out with you .. atb Dave..
Cheers Dave. The pack is excellent. Big fan of the Sawyer too. Much faster than my other filters. I'm partial to a midget gem myself for the sugar rush. ATB Paul
Great video. Delight to watch and listen to the nice description. I have recently started wild camping and your videos are always an inspiration. Thanks
That was grand👍 Thought you were pulling our legs with the rehydrated cloth....I seem to remember your insta-steak ruse using beef jerky😉. Smashing track and paths with great views. For the weight of the BRS I’d keep as backup. I had a Coleman Peak one fail on me years ago on An Teallach’s second munro. Ended up eating dry pot noodle. I was freezing ....it was Rank.
Good point Del. I do carry a mini fire kit so I could always get a brew but would need at least a few twigs. I need to do another leg puller video sometime. Unfortunately you'd be surprised how many people don't have a sense of humour.
Excellent video Paul. Lots of information from kit to cupa soups. Love all your kit you use on all your videos. And stunning locations to. Totally hooked on your channel Paul keep em comming. 😊👍
Good vid. Trail tip if using those annoying sawyer squeeze bags, cut down a cheap, thin, squidgy spring water bottles (shop bought) use it as a scoop to pour water into the sawyer bag. It will squash down to pack away weighs nothing.
Great vid mate. Just purchased a few of they meals. I use a platypus 2 litre pouch for my sawyer filter. Great for grabbing extra to save on more trips 👍
Nice one Paul. Stunning views on this one. Good to see Andy out and about with you. I think you've got to try and find a happy medium between weight saving and carrying gear you like using. Excellent as always...........atb Andy👍
Great vid - Love this route - gonna have to give it a go meself sometime! Just started the Pennine Way, gonna do it in sections. I have only done Edale to Crowden so far, and I carried far too much stuff - so fascinated by any form of weight saving options! So thanks for the tips! ATB Adam
Add a 6-10gramme cone shelter for the BRS stove, and save yourself the tippy height and 40g of the extra 50gr weight of the MSR Pocket rocket. The BRS is frugal on gas, and has a much lower footprint (less likely to topple, especially with a stabiliser for the canister. Works well when given a wee bit of wind shelter, I find. Cheers from the North.
Agree with your observations about the BRS and Pocket Rocket. Got both and if I'm away for a few days I'm taking the Rocket. BRS is fine if you don't use Colmans gas and it's a still night, not the sort of thing you need to find out when it's too late so a brutal 50g extra for peace of mind. Oh, and my wind block borrowed from the msr universal.
Love your videos Paul. Did quite a bit of backpacking a few years ago then drifted away from it doing other things. I try not to think about my own mortality but having reached the ripe age of 62.....and a half, and still being relatively fit, I've decided to get back into it while I'm still able. Your videos are a great source of information and inspiration. Did an overnight wild camp in North Wales this last weekend to try out my stuff again. Really enjoyed it. I was only 30 seconds from the van, but slowly, slowly, catchy monkey! It's probably just me but you remind me of John Thomson from The Fast Show. I keep expecting you to say at the start of your videos, "Hi, and welcome to jazzzz club". Take care my friend. Love you new little companion by the way.
Nice vid Paul. Great to see Andy make a guest appearance as i love his vids too. I would always say stick with a good brand stove as if it fails you are eating cold slop, however you have your titanium mug and bushcraft skills.
I sacked my BRS stove too Paul because it was loud and very poor, even in a slight breeze. Gone for the Soto windmaster and very happy with it 👍🏻 ATB Jiffy
Did you know Paul that 'hope' in old English means Valley? I thought I'd share that with you. Good you meeting up with Andy. He's a good man and we enjoy our chats regarding each others adventures here on youtube. Always positive! I gotta say I enjoy the color of your water there - mixed with good grub it no doubt makes for an interesting chow down. The Peak district was looking impressive as ever. Good going. Mark
It's true that you learn something new every day Mark. I din't know that about Hope. Andy probably knew. He knows everything haha. The water is a strange thing. There is a slight tinge to the taste but I've never had any issues drinking it. ATB Paul
@@PaulMessner Yeah Andy knows a fair bit Paul - that's why I like to talking to him. He's like the magic. I do like water and tasting different waters - I would like that water no doubt. Have a great end to the week...
You Heathen Mez. You had beef stew without Hendos. I use one of those BRS stoves but I also carry a small foil windscreen made from a foil roasting dish. Very light and makes all the difference. Might have to do that walk myself this year. Atb mate.
Reet, @ 5:57 you can squeeze the water into the bottle a lot easier, take two plastic bottle caps that fit both the Sawyer and the bottle, glue them together (I used an Araldite type of glue and drill a large through both of them and then you can screw them together while you are squeezing, keeping meaning to make a RUclips video of what I did.
Great informative vid Paul,, honking down as usual on the last leg, always the way on a hike over a few days. Keep up the good reviews on gear I’m finding this really helpful.
Hi Paul, I'm looking forward to the summer when me and the family are out that way. Ive been telling the Mrs how lovely it is for months and finally she has agreed to holiday there 😬 Ive got some walking planned and also I want to visit the caves. Thanks for sharing mate ATB Mike StayCornish😬
great camp..some nice new gear too..I used the BRS stove on my west highland way hike, i agree with you, its not that good, mine packed up twice on the hike and one of the arms bent over, not wot you want , when u in the highlands, i use either MSR rocket or the Alpkit Koro now as my gas go-tos. ATB WJ
Brilliant vid and some cracking kit 👌 kg though???! That's very manageable mate, you'll be floating up those hills. Loved that walk awesome ridge, I need to do that at some point. Great to see Andy join you too. Cheers for sharing and defo catch up soon. Take care Steve
The mountain goat will never float mate haha. You need to get down here sometime and check out the Peaks. It was good to catch up with Beavo. He know's his shit around that area. Learned quite a lot from him. See you on the next one mate.
I have done this walk a few times, I sometimes get a late train to hope do the lap over night then get the train hope if I don’t have time to walk and camp, I know a good walk from Matlock to Edale. I only started watching your videos yesterday so you will see me posting on some older videos
always a pleasure to watch your latest vid, ordered some of those towels, great bit of kit, look forward to the next vid thnaks for taking the time ATB Kaizer
Using a remote canister gets the stove a lot lower for only a few grams of extra weight (the flexible pipe), wind shielding is much easier and the burner isn't as near to the vestibule fabric. DiY strip down from a 3-leg stove inside something like a titanium honey stove .
I have the bsr and i have mixed feelings too. Even sat on my workbench in the shed it doesn’t have a very good spread/ distribution of flame.it looks almost like someone has cut a bottle cap with some tin snips! I have bought a cheap heat shield to give it another go, but at a tenner it may be worth a punt. Thanks for the excellent video’s.
Excellent film Paul, I'm intrigued with the Osprey Levity as I currently have the older style Exos and it digs into my shoulders. I seen heehaw on Kinder Scout on my only visit. Mam Tor looks a good walk. Cheers Robin
you wern't far from some crash sites at the woolpacks mate, and if you walk about a bit at the woolpacks its dead easy to lose the path, another top upload Paul
Hi Paul. I've been watching a few of your videos over the last few weeks as I've always had an interest in backpacking and have now started to prepare for my first trip. It's always interesting to listen and watch other people with more experience so keep up the good work. One question though. I checked online and the peak District website said that wild camping in the park land is not allowed. Is this right or am I missing something? PDNP is the not far from me so would make a nice trip if I could be sure to camp there ok. Cheers
Hey Paul, another wonderful video. Thank you. I was wondering if you still rate the Levity and Sawyer Squeeze 3 years down the line as I'm thinking of buying them. Thanks again.
Really nice video looked like Piccadilly circus with all them people still it's nice to see more people out and about always amazes me how you can remember the names and weights of the various equipment you mention anyways great vlog really entertaining
Hi Paul, I'm still tent hunting. Having had the photon 1 for some time now, how does it perform in wind considering its limited design. How durable is it considering its light weight. Cheers Julian.
Cracking that mate "none of that trailmix malarky " loved that, nowt like a bag e choccy's to keep the sugar levels up lol..you did cracking mate it's a long challenging walk is that & glad i was able to get up & meet you up there really enjoyed it.look forward to the next un mate..atb..Andy.
Thanks Andy. I see it didn't take you long to get aaart agin. How was Gunnerside? It was nice to catch up mate. Looking forward to the next one already. See you soon Cheers
Those expanding towels are great, if you go to your Chemist and get a urine sample tube you can fit 7 of them inside and the weight is only 30g. Thanks for advise on the Cloud Peak/Helm debate by the way..
Great Vids Paul. Am enjoying your gear reviews in the field. Just about to buy a load of new gear so they have been really helpful. Keep up the good work mate.
I love the view down into hope Valley from kinder, I Once walked down the side of the valley off the trail right to where kinder downfall comes out of the ground and I won't be doing that again it was so difficult to get back up haha
Really enjoyed the walk. Thanks for capturing it for us. I bought the BSR stove and tested it with the Stanley mug. I found that it’s just too inefficient when compared to my Jetboil. Out of curiosity, do you have a cook pot with the heat sink fins for your pocket rocket? If not, what cook pot are you using with it; the same one used with the BSR? Thanks again for the video. The terrain you walk in so much different than mine. Beautiful in its own way.
A good film, always interested in you testing the kit, nowt worse than buying blind and gear turns out to be crap.Don't know if i could ever say good bye to my trusty Jetboil tho!
Another great video Paul, I do like watching yours and Andys channels, you’re a pair of great honest guys and I am dead jealous of you both living so close to the hills. Great walk as well, good distance and I love the M&M quote better than your trail mix 😂😂😂 keep em coming guys. Atb to both of you. Tony
Hi Paul great video and what a super light rucksack. Can I just ask what tent was you using on this camp. I have seen you using different tents but I can't say I've seen this one before ....
I first used it on this camp ruclips.net/video/hWqKhWxa0R8/видео.html It's the terra nova photon 1. Weighs about 700g. It's not the biggest but it's still a great little shelter
Hi Paul, cheers for the heads up on the BRS. I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while, maybe as a backup then. I’ve only used my levity with a pack cover in the rain. How did it hold up without one? Keep up the good vids. Nice to see what kit works in the uk climate.
Sometimes showing what's not so good is just as valuable information. The pack held up well in the rain and shed water pretty well. I do put everything inside a thin waterproof pack liner though so nothing can get wet.
I've seen those bladders. i tend to use a cut down thin water bottle as a scoop. I packs flat and works pretty well. If the sawyer bags give way then I may upgrade. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.
Liking that Osprey pack. By the way, do you realise that your canister-steadying device weighs as much as your stove? I was a Pocket Rocket user, and learned to steady the canister by propping rocks around it. Gone the meths route since then and much prefer it. Glad you like the Sawyer Micro - I've just bought one but haven't used it yet.
You're correct David. The stand weighs about 25g. I don't always take it along but it depends on the terrain. Getting balance in some of the Peak District heather is a little difficult. I've been using alcohol stoves a while now as shown in my previous trips. i do like them. However when I'm putting the extra miles in I sometimes want a quick boil hence going back to gas for this trip.
Late to the party, been watching the vids, had to comment on this one. I dislike that path over Rushup, that solid path ruins my knees for some reason! Jacobs ladder, kinder scout, mam tor, no worries. But that bloomin Rushup path. Loving the vids (on a binge at the minute trying to convince the Mrs to camp with me). We frequently take our 4 year old up to kinder scout, he loves standing at the top. All the best.
Great vid, spoke to you on instagram, Cumbria Way bloke lol. Top walk! Done it in the Summer, in ice last year and snow this, was a killer by the end and just made the end of daylight. Enjoyed that, cheers. Right pack weight too!
Wow, what a busy place but good to see you did manage to get a bit of peace and quiet in the end. Andrew Beavers is very quickly getting to be one of my favorite channels to watch, great channel and a real canny lad. After watching yours and several other videos, I just bought my very first GoPro, getting the Hero 7 Black. Any thoughts on an extremal mic and filming in 4 K/1080p? Great views in the morning and quite a hike over the 2 days to be honest. Shame about the last mile and the rain - sods law lol! Cheers Alan
Hi Alan Andy makes some superb videos. He's far better than me at capturing the landscapes. the hero 7 black is superb for it's size. I've started filming in 4k now. As i'm outdoors the wider angle isn't too bad. I do carry a lav microphone and the adapter but all of my latest videos area straight from the gopro with no external microphone. I do cover with a windslayer though which drastically reduces the wind interference
Enjoyed watching that Paul and will have a go at that route myself - hopefully on a clear day. Good going on the weight front only 7Kgs , in winter my pack is well heavier than that - respect. Mind did that include all the minstrels as well? ;-)
As a wild camper myself, I find your content very helpful 👍🏻 You can never stop learning on a hike or camp.
Thank you for the content you create. I am thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. A short bit of aluminium flashing fixes the wind blowing the flame around (including on your pocket rocket) as saves fuel.

always a pleasure to watch your latest vid, ordered some of those towels, great bit of kit, look forward to the next vid thnaks for taking the time ATB Kaizer
Thanks Paul, must try that one
Cheers Widgy
I've heard some very good reviews about the BRS stove but I think it's a bit hit and miss with a quality control with the cheap Chinese stoves
Buy Soto It’s UL and best windproof best fire .
@@serhiiderevianko4852 Too expensive for most people.
Great one Paul, love the gear reviews and the Trail Mix!! 😊👌
Thanks Daniel.
Hi Paul... another great walk...glad you took us along..them clothes are the Bollox...lol Nice views and good to see what gear your using...atb Muz
Cheers Muz. It was nice to get out and put some miles in. ATB Paul
Paul, thank you very much for giving me new inspiration for my upcoming hiking trip. I was looking for something like the dehydrated wipes :-)
They are very handy item. they weigh nothing and saves you carrying a pack full of wet wipes on every trip that you may not need.
Excellent film Paul, I'm intrigued with the Osprey Levity as I currently have the older style Exos and it digs into my shoulders.
I seen heehaw on Kinder Scout on my only visit. Mam Tor looks a good walk.
Cheers
Robin
It's a great walk Robin. I really like the levity but I think only having 8kg with water definitely helps.
@@PaulMessner my base weight is around 8kg too. Might look into it.
you wern't far from some crash sites at the woolpacks mate, and if you walk about a bit at the woolpacks its dead easy to lose the path, another top upload Paul
Thanks Michael. I've not visited the crash sites before.
Cheers
It's not technically allowed but pitch high, late and be discreet. I've never had a problem
Thanks for watching. Best wishes. Paul
@@PaulMessner great place up Gunnerside mate can get very busy wknds tho & especially in summer.
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching. Best wishes. Paul
When did you do this Paul? I was up there night hiking Friday night!! Walked up Jacobs ladder and along the north side. Down to Edale.
It was a Sunday night camp. Really busy up there last weekend
@@PaulMessner Shame to have missed you! I have really enjoyed watching your videos over these past few weeks. Would have been ace to bump into you!
What a fantastic film Paul, loved it, I'm gonna have a crack at that myself soon after watching that, good quality film pal
Cheers Steve. It's a great route
Excellent hike and video as always Paul, really impressed with that backpack of yours. I'm with you on the Galaxy Minstrels! Lol!👍
Thanks Anthony. Chocolate over raisins for me every time. Atb Paul
Tony
Thanks again for watching Tony. Glad you are enjoying the vids
Hi Paul great video and what a super light rucksack. Can I just ask what tent was you using on this camp. I have seen you using different tents but I can't say I've seen this one before ....
I first used it on this camp
ruclips.net/video/hWqKhWxa0R8/видео.html
It's the terra nova photon 1. Weighs about 700g. It's not the biggest but it's still a great little shelter
Soto Amicus stove might be a good replacement for the BRS
Hi Paul, cheers for the heads up on the BRS. I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while, maybe as a backup then. I’ve only used my levity with a pack cover in the rain. How did it hold up without one? Keep up the good vids. Nice to see what kit works in the uk climate.
Sometimes showing what's not so good is just as valuable information. The pack held up well in the rain and shed water pretty well. I do put everything inside a thin waterproof pack liner though so nothing can get wet.
Another great video, thank you! Have you seen the cnoc water bladders? They're good for shallow water sources.
Great video as always ..... I got the hilleberg tent handbook this week and there was your akto on page 47. Well done 👍
Thank you. I was pleased to see they used my photo.
That photo was one of the reasons I purchased my sand Akto, simply stunning Paul 😎😎😎
It seems to go on forever that path. Glad to here you getting the little one up in the hills. Thanks for watching.
Great vid, spoke to you on instagram, Cumbria Way bloke lol. Top walk! Done it in the Summer, in ice last year and snow this, was a killer by the end and just made the end of daylight. Enjoyed that, cheers. Right pack weight too!
I remember David. Glad you enjoyed the video. Looking forward to taking on the Cumbria Way later this year.
Love the bungee and stake tip to stop search pad blowing away. I usually plonk something heavy on the edge- and no, I don’t mean my backside :-p
Cheers Alan
Hi Alan
Andy makes some superb videos. I do cover with a windslayer though which drastically reduces the wind interference
nice place to camp and walk around, keep up the good vids
Hi Paul Great video I don’t suppose you have a link to the route that you walked on this video do you
I'll take a look. I may have it somewhere. If you could send an email i'll see what i can do
@@PaulMessner Great thanks my email is phillipmeade35@yahoo.co.uk
Great Video Paul. I reached the same conclusion as you on the BRS. Is that a new Akto?
The Pocket Rocket 2 from now on when cooking with gas (lightweight gear anyway). The tent is a terra nova photon 1
Nicely done. What tent are you using here?
Nice walk Paul and some great gear too :-)
Cheers Russ
Enjoyed watching that Paul and will have a go at that route myself - hopefully on a clear day. Good going on the weight front only 7Kgs , in winter my pack is well heavier than that - respect. Mind did that include all the minstrels as well? ;-)
Minstrels...food of the gods. It's a lovely route Phil. Well worth checking out
Great video and nice photography 👍I have that stove it’s great and very cheap too.
My old Deuter 38 weighs 1.64kg (3lb 10oz) empty!
I should get one of these modern lighter packs I think!
Some of the new materials are excellent. I'm not sure they are as robust though as 30d cordura but if you want get the weight down then needs must
Fantastic video, great kit. Is the levity made of dyneema? And is it effectively waterproof? Taped seams?
