My 12 year old granddaughter has autism. But she doesn't fit easily into the spectrum.
Her fits are severe. Back when she was a toddler, before she was diagnosed, she would give herself concussions, black eyes, stitches, snatch herself bald....SEVERE fits. But she was also high functioning. When she wasn't in a fit, she looked and acted pretty much like a regular child. A little developmentally delayed , but pretty much normal.
Her insurance plan required a physician's approval to have her tested, but the doctors refused to sign off on it. They kept telling us that tantrums were age appropriate behavior for a child her age. Then they would call children's services, because she came in for stitches, and had a week old black eye. At first children's services took her out of the home. We tried to tell them she was hurting herself, but they didn't believe us....at first. Less than a week later they dropped her back off with a fresh black eye and an apology. After that they would just drop by, ask if we had convinced a doctor to have her tested yet, then leave.
It took till she was almost 3 before she FINELY threw one of her fits in front of the same doctor that had been the most condescending about tantrums being age appropriate. A week later she was diagnosed as being SOMEWHERE in the autism spectrum. The psychiatrist wasn't sure WHERE exactly, but somewhere. Once she started her meds, the difference was night and day. It was great, till her doctor retired, and the next doctor, only seeing her medicated, decided she was taking too strong of meds. He cut them back, and her self abusive behaviors resumed. This has happened every time she has had to change doctors, which has been 4 or 5 times now.
Autism can be a bumpy ride, but she has been worth every minute of it.
Oh my goodness. That would be so scary having people assume she’s being hurt by you guys when you clearly care a lot about the young girl. Try to get her medical files transferred to a new doctor and a psychiatrist referral and formal letter. I applaud your strength and efforts 💖
Julie Baker These same aspects of denial happen with every illness who changes Dr. They cut back Cortisone Tablets for my sons eczema and he was almost hospitalised from having his whole body of skin peel off. Or, want to change my anaesthetic medication, from Bowel Cancer stage 4 after I had surgery, too. Sometimes you just have to tell the Dr. the truth of what is being experienced, make it believable and throw that tantrum yourself.
My older sister is high functioning autistic. She wants desperately to be what she perceives as ‘normal’ but she can’t relate to the people she tries to imitate. It’s very frustrating for her and adults are as cruel as 7th grade ‘hot’ girls. But this helped us develop a terrific friendship over the last 60 years. Autism is God telling everyone how to live!

My sister has autism and she does it with pants
She is girl if she is young and under 10 slap her punish her for taking her shirt off. Make her realise it's bad again and again and again. She has autism but the people around her do not.

I imagine you have never experienced autism, so let me tell you one thing. you NEVER hit them. it never ends well. ever. I should know. I have worked with children with autism. slapping them is perhaps the worst possible thing you could ever do. if you think it's okay to hit a child like that, simply because they don't understand things the same way we do? you are an awful person.

it is surprising how people and some physicians don't know aspergers and a long list of others are all a subcategory of autism. a strength as well as a weakness of aspergers is once you commit to something however significant or insignificant, you will bring it to fruition no matter what.
I have not listened/watched this yet i just heard the shirt came off and it is freaking helarious and i had to say this dad is awesome. What do we have if we don't have a sense of humor in life?

I have a nonverbal autistic adult step son, and he loves fries and being shirtless too! He sleeps maybe 2 hours if were lucky, and watches TV and listens to music nonstop (at the same time), but he is the BEST! He makes me laugh, every day! He makes my life an obstacle course of weirdness, and keeps me on my toes! It's hard to explain it to others.. anyway, lots of love Mike, I can totally relate.
I give respect to all parents but to have a child with autism can be a challenge and I get the feeling you are loving. Lots of people dont get it

I am 36. I JUST met my 13 yo autistic cousin - and she gravitated to me. First time EVER meeting her, and I was her BEST BUD! I can't tell you how proud I feel. There are no words for HOW PROUD I FEEL! I had a HUGE SMILE ON MY FACE! I Love her, my ENTIRE heart told me I loved her. The rest of my body followed suit. I never knew I needed her in my life, BUT I NEED HER IN MY LIFE! I won the lottery. I have her in my life. I had no f*cking clue that I was this lucky.

That last part of the comment! 🤣 my brother had mental disorders that he mostly grew out of, but I didn't really know much about autism or aspergers until my 20s. 35 now.

I walked around my cousins property and noticed there were NO hoops. But, I have one. That no one uses... and now I need to know what her favorite colors are because I am making this thing customized for her! I also need to learn what her favorite things are so I can buy stickers that she can put on it. I AM STOKED!

Aw man... My brother had low-functioning autism (amongst other conditions) and so much of this hits home. So many good memories. He had more literal common sense than anyone I ever met and I never laughed with someone so much. I was so blessed to have him as my big brother and my best friend. Miss him every day. Thanks for bringing back some great memories, Dry Bar and Mr Guido. :)

I have 8 yr old twin grandson's with autism and OCD and non-verbal . They are angels' and the joy of my life . I couldn't love anything and anyone more. Special Needs children are a blessings in so many ways. God doesn't give them to just anybody .

All the comedians here are so good, and all clean :) I don't understand the use of profanity on other shows, because this is a great, funny show, and so relatable as well. I have watched Sarah Millican, she does use profanity, but she is English, and she uses it with a flair; and she is also relatable, if you are a woman and have had disappointments with men, well, she is very relatable. I have noticed that English people say what they mean, instead of beating around the bush, and I appreciate the honesty.
