    So the race is backwards?

    • @holdenmad111
      @holdenmad111 3 года назад +4

      Yes Auscar went the opposite way to Nascar due to driver position Nascar are left hand drive so driver is to the low side of track, Auscar was right hand drive so went opposite way to also have driver to low side of track. this was a safety precaution as those walls are not very forgiving at high speeds.

    did peter brock race in one of these races??

      Yes he did, he drove an XF Falcon in one of the races a few weeks later. Qualified 3rd and led for a while before a holed radiator caused him to spin in turn 2. He didn't hit anything but he was out of the race. He later failed to qualify a Ford Thunderbird NASCAR at the 1988 Bob Jane T-Marts Christmas 500 in December. There are different stories as to why he didn't do much oval racing. One said that he admitted that racing on the high speed ovals wasn't for him. Another said that he just wasn't all that interested. Whichever story you believe, either way his oval career was short.
      He did drive another AUSCAR in the Peter Brock Tribute meeting at the Calder road circuit in 1995 driving John Faulkner's spare Betta Electrical sponsored VR Commodore where I think he finished 3rd. To my knowledge that was his last time in an AUSCAR or NASCAR.

      @@Holden308 The Ford XF made an excellent Auscar, this was due to the cars propulsion system being fan driven rather than wheel driven. The 250 cubic inch 6 cylinder X-Flow Alloy Head II engine was only there to drive the engine fan which is what actually propelled the car forwards using thrust much like an aircraft. This helped keep the engine keep cool and also made it impossible for oval track opponents to draft the car due to the high amounts of turbulent air produced in its jetwash. This along with the cars pea shooter inspired exhaust system gave the car its distinct Electrolux Godfreys Vacuum cleaner sounds, the large XF tail lights assisted with ensuring all medium to large commercial aircraft could easily see it from distances of greater than 100kms.. helping make it one of the safest cars to ever bless our roads.

      I was there when Brock, Dick Johnson and others raced against some NASCAR American drivers. They had a massive turn 3 crash...Brock swore he would never drive a NASCAR again :)

      @@PTriddy It was Allan Grice, not Brock. He drove the Fosters Oldsmobile (I think) in a Winston Cup race over there first, then here in that first race you speak of. Brock only drove Auscar, CAMS did not like him doing that as they were big enemies of Bob Jane. Just on Grice, thinking now is that he was a superior driver to Brock

      @@jadesmith6823 V8 Supercars exists because of Auscar, it is it's road racing successor. Auscar didn't fail, fields were always large right till the track closed.
