the idea of jones losing is status by losing his hat is even confirmed in one of DMC deleted scenes. After Norrington, brought the heart to Becket, we can see the Dutchman coming to Port Royale and aboard, Jones remove his hat like being dominated by Bekcet.
The great irony of this video is it’s kinda right, hats are clearly used as symbols throughout the series, especially Jack’s. Best April fools take something true and simply blow it out of proportion until people finally catch on.
I was thinking this week of getting a figure of the legendary Jack and wondered if he should have a hat or not. Funny that I was doing thinking of the symbolism and this video gets made not too long before I was considering a purchase.
I LOVE this vid, but I think that you missed some stuff. For one, in the opening of the first movie, Joshamee Gibbs has his hat on while he crews the British ship, but when we see him on Tortuga, he has lost both his status and his hat. In addition, Movie four, despite being a huge step down for the franchise, keeps to this rule somewhat. Blackbeard has an appropriately imposing hat, Angelica has smaller yet more stylish hat, and Barbossa has traded in his iconic pirate hat for an unmistakably imperial one. Pretty cool that this “rule” is continued, I just wish the actual plot of the movie was a bit better.
LIES! Will comes into his own at the end of Curse of the Black Pearl, shown by his adoption of a rather impressive musketeer style hat. Then Dead Man's chest rips him from his well-earned headware, ne'er to be seen again. Truly one of the most egregious character assassinations in cinematic history
You forgot to mention that Jack loses his hat at the end of the fifth film but doesn't go after it. This shows that he doesn't need to wear that hat to feel confident or complete anymore. He can be a legendary captain on his own. It's why we see the origins of the hat earlier in the film, it's Jack being put in this cycle of hat wearing he must break from and truly become the best pirate of the caribbean... although Barbosa did die earlier in that film without his hat on so maybe he was the weaker pirate
Norington at the beginning of the curse of the black pearl wasn't the captain, he was the lieutenant. Gibbs called Norington, "leftenant" and when the wreckage is discovered Norington says, "rouse the captain immediately" meaning the captain was sleeping.
Jack lost his hat in DMC, how Jack shows his demise. Also in On Stranger Tides, he never gets to use his hat after London representing him being far away from most of his familiar folks and him being treated like a crew in the Queen Anne's Revenge.
You know I’ve always thought there was more going on with the hats in the series, you took the pieces I was seeing and made a beautiful picture. But on a serious note, it is pretty clear that at least Jack’s hat is supposed to be a symbol. It’s given a weird amount of focus to be just a part of his costume. It’s exact meaning seems to shift a bit, but generally seems to be at least partly to represent the persona of the clever, evil and powerful “Captain Jack Sparrow” that he is when he’s wearing it, and when he’s without it he is somehow lesser. He’s often separated from it when captured because he’s not in control of the situation (at least technically, he often is somewhat able to compensate with his wits). During most of dead man’s chest he’s without it because he’s effectively running scared. During his crazy visions in worlds end, the only jack with the hat is the captain, all the others just have his bandana.
Even if this video is an April Fools joke, I never considered the importance of hats as a motif (any recurring element in a story that has symbolic significance or the reason behind actions) in the Pirates franchise.
i see, so the same way jack was saving his last shot to kill barbossa will was saving his last shot (since he was an eunuch) to impregnate elizabeth bravo vince
Pirate Hats have always been a sense of ‘Pride’ for a pirate. It’s like their underwear! The Captain of the ship must have the Biggest hat… it is known! 🫡🏴☠️ It actually makes me laugh thinking you watched every single one of these movies speculating what’s on everyone’s head in every scene 🤔🫡🤣
Either "freshly dead" or "sun-bleached bones." Everything inbetween is too gross. Hats have been status symbols for a long time. April Fools joke or no, the film-makers probably did have some idea of using hats to express status and personality among the characters. As for the Freudian bit, well... sometimes a hat is just a hat.
Liver mortis is lovely, it’s like autumn leaves for the blood and skin. 🍂

You can tell he's joking when he says "We never once see Will with a hat." While showing two shots of Will with a hat
The commitment to hat awareness is unmatched. Hope your hat is as big and magnificent as any to exist!
Likewise, hat size is very important!

Yessss! A video pointing out the genius of the Pirates of the Caribbean hats.
also non of jack's halluciantions in davy jones's locker don't wear any hats
Because they’re, very literally, not real men
Another reason why it's so important to Jack, the hat and being the Captain. It's become a matter of identity.

F in the chat for dear Will’s hat
Finally!!! The hat video!!!! Dude you got me giggling like a mad lad
I wish they didn't lean so heavily on hats in pirates of the Caribbean. Just seems like lazy writing.
In all seriousness, what.
XD
Only a seadog without a real hat would say that... Anti hat propaganda
The eunich is my favorite reoccurring joke
Thanks for covering this very important topic 🙏🤣
It feels like a TF2 video in spirit.

The imagined crew are hatless aswel, to jack theyre expendable, weak and beneath him
"Hat" doesn't even feel like a real word anymore
Indeed Barbossa have a big hat energy. I coudn't agree more
Terrible thumbnail btw
Big Hat Energy, BHE
Great vid! Will finish soon

Jack wasnt halluciating
he was trapped in the locker (davy jones locker)
he escaped with the help of barbossa etc
He was still hallucinating that he was in command of a large crew.

*Looks at the date. This was uploaded after watching the video.* yep, That’s about right.

Barbossa's hat symbolizes his brainy tactics as a captain.
Alright does the Kraken from Pirates of the Caribbean stand a chance against Godzilla (minus one)?
In the sea yes.
Good video
So while talking about will never wearing a hat you show him wearing a hat twice😂 what?
Exactly 😈
Hat at it
what is inappropriate about hats? no way, I'm am so watching this!
