Okay, I also think Carina bothers me, but not for the reason you say. I think, as Barbossa said one of the things he couldn't feel when he was cursed was the "warmth of a woman's flesh". I think it makes sense that he'd try and do the sexy as soon as he could, just like he felt the spray of the sea at the start of the AWE's climax. I also think it makes sense he'd look into the Trident in case he got cursed again. That's not why her existence is a plot hole. What bothers me is that Jack indicates he knew Carina's mother. This makes zero sense. The opening of On Stranger Tides makes it clear that Jack and Barbossa haven't seen each other since the end of At World's End.. (incidentally, if we follow the timeline this movie establishes, On Stranger Tides opens 16 years after AWE). They had no time sailing together during the trilogy, and we know Jack hadn't seen Barbossa for over a decade at the start of the first movie. That means Carina would have to be born at least 31 years before the start of this movie, and yet she's supposed to be roughly the same age as Henry. This also means Barbossa apparently knew about the Trident but NEVER went after it during the decade he was cursed.
It all makes sense now! In the post-credit scene of On Stranger Tides, we see that Angelica has obtained the voodoo doll of Jack, and by her expression we can tell that she desires to use it for revenge. THAT is why Jack had so much bad luck and was not himself in this film, Angelica had been messing with him! That could at least be a lore explanation.
I agree with your critiques in this video. I love the first 3 movies and I even like On Stranger Tides quite a lot, I find it to be very underrated. Dead Men Tell No Tales… I enjoy the last few scenes of the movie well enough, but most of it is a train wreck. The worst part for me is how they completely destroyed Jack’s character. Also the score was really missing Hans Zimmer’s wonderful work.
While I appreciated Stranger Tides for trying to spin off, and not continue the story of the first three movies, this one did that, and it's genuinely infuriating. Also, one hole that Ryan George pointed out, how is Will alive? All the curses were broken, right? And Will had to have his heart cut out, so they can keep him alive, which implies magic. So if all the magic is gone, shouldn't Will be dead then?
Nah sea you are wrong jack giving the compass away=freeing salazar isnt an equivalent to somehow palpatine return, its an equivalent to the holdo maneuver who happens in a few seconds and completely invalidates all spave battles in the history of star wars

Want to hear something sad: On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales were the only Pirates of the Caribbean movies I actually saw in the cinema 😞 I didn't see the original trilogy in the cinema because back then I wasn't a movie buff yet.
1:29 Going into those f*cking movies, I expected incompetent technical aspects, plot holes and contrivences, and characters being stupid, but outright character assassination for the simple characterisation we get for Dr Loomis was not what I was expecting.
Regarding Barbossa's sacrifice, I genuinely feel that if nothing else, the intention behind it was actually pretty great. Having a character who's mainly acted selfishly throughout the franchise end his life to protect that of those he cares about selflessly is kinda sorta genius and something I'd consider to be an interesting way to end Barbossa's character. In excecution I definitely wish that there had been more time to develop him and Carina's relationship as father and daughter, but you can still feel that general idea in the film with what little time we get to explore them (which mainly just comes down to DMTNT's severe pacing issues but whatever). Other than that excellent video as usual. It feels really good to see these things, some of which have been at the back of my mind for months finally be acknowledged by a video about this film, specially the Trident of Poseidon points.
I myself do quite like the flashback scene, there's a tad more substance than anything else in the film but what they did with the compass is both ridiculous and inexcusable. The trident also has the same problem of causing catastrophic continuity issues. I've always wished this film was about Will and his adventures on the Dutchman, ferrying souls to the after life. There's so much storytelling potential there. Jack might be able to be worked in, like imagine if he was losing a bit of his touch and became worried, eventually being hired by a new villain with business with Will to hunt and kill him. The villain could have heard of tales of Jack and been interested in hiring him. As Jack's reputation depletes, he gets a chance to become a legend once again but at the cost of Will. I think it'd be cool to pose them against each other and deepen their relationship and conflict throughout the film
Would you ever consider making a video about how they could have made a better Potc 5 and maybe 6 if we felt it was needed? Like having Elizabeth as a central figure to the plot, not killing Barbossa, giving new characters an actual personality, and not destroying the characters we already know and love. I also didn't fully catch that Gibbs wasn't the same in this movie compared to others. Given that Will isn't cursed to the Dutchman, why not make it they're trying to protect his heart from being taken or find a way for him to be with his family more often?
To add more to the atrocity of this movie, if you look closely at all the pirate ships in this movie, they are LITERALLY ALL THE SAME MODEL AS THE BLACK PEARL. Seriously!!! Not kidding!!! Look for yourself!!
Like there's alot of replica age of sail ships all over the place that can become ideal candidates for the pirate ships taking on the Silent Mary. Whereas At World's End has alot of individual pirate ships that are completely unique.
I think there was to much of Jacks origin in this that didn't make sense..and it was just more of the same..And I agree jack just feels like a shadow of himself

Since you're one of the biggest Pirates of the Caribbean experts, I'd like you to answer this question: Much of Dead Man's Chest is build on the fact that Jack can't get the compass to point to Davy Jones's heart. Why was he confused on what he needed to do? Especially since it was rather easy for Elizabeth, who knew jackshit about the chest?
The moment you realize this moment establishes “whenever Jack gave his compass to Will or Elizabeth in the original trilogy, he was risking releasing Salazar, which never happened.” You make a good point. Can’t believe you were able to shove the fifth movie into your timeline, if only to include Sea of Thieves as a glorified segue. 😂
I love how technically Jack ALREADY found the trident in the Young Jack Sparrow book “Bold New Horizons”. And here in this movie, here he is again going after the same trident and yet he does not make ANY reference to when he found it the first time. It’s hilarious because this movie went out of their way to show how the Pearl was originally called The Wicked Wench, which was established in The Price of Freedom, yet they couldn’t be bothered to really utilize the material they were pulling from in order to please fans that love the expanded lore material.
1. Jack was a hopeless looser in the film because he was actually cursed in order to pose no threat to Barbossa. It's explained at one point by a witch he was paying visit to.
Yep, the opening of the movie with a fishy Will left my wondering how and why he'd have abused his power enough to re-make the Dutchman's fish people curse. Somehow Palpatine returned at least isn't that bad, but the force healing.... yeah, that is that bad. I had a rant about these after getting home when I saw this in the cinema, though I hadn't stayed around for the post-credits.
At the end of the movie, Henry breaks the trident which held all the curses of the seas. Congrats, Henry, you accomplished what Lord Cutler Beckett wanted to do, which was to kill all the magic in the seas and make the immaterial immaterial. Thanks a lot Henry !
I like Captain Salazar, but that was mostly due to Javier Bardem's acting. I've seen people say that the reason giving away the compass never caused Jack's greatest fear to manifest was because he never truly DID give it away, with no expectation or intent of getting it back, as he did here. Letting Will or whoever end up with the compass was always part of whatever scheme Jack was orchestrating at the moment, the conclusion of which he knew ahead of time would see his beloved compass back in his hands. That makes sense actually. What's harder to explain is yes yes, the whole "compass bartered from Tia Dalma who's this guy giving it to Jack after he dies" bit. People have said that he might have received the compass from her as Dead Man's Chest established, then (in some unknown and off-screen instance) given it to the guy who formally returns it to Jack upon his death in this movie. That is also somewhat believable. I do agree that both of these require a good deal of waving away of specific details from previous movies to work.
I do not accept it as being canon to the trilogy. One thing you failed to mention though is the scene where young jack takes over the ship, in the background you see a pirate who doesn't really seem to be crew, he seems to be more like a... lord... or just an honored guest on the ship... I think that is supposed to be Captain Teague. I hope that Johnny Depp sticks to his guns and refuses to sign on for another film or if he does, then he needs to demand full creative rights.
Dude you hit the nail on the head with that bit about Johnny never coming back. Too many people want Depp back but the franchise is beyond cooked already with DMTNT screwing up the worldbuilding. Thanks for watching!
There be another thing that bothered me about this film. Why didn't barbossa use the Trident Sword? That thing can make a ship operate on its own, and even if he couldn't control the Silent Mary, he could still control Queen anne's Revenge and stand a bit o' a chance.
I like Salazar as a character concept, and the actor was perfect. Unfortunately yeah, some of his writing was kinda bad and lacked depth. Here's something I thought of a while back that may not make sense and probably my bullshit interpretation, but probably would've made the movie a tiny bit more interesting. So, according to this movie's logic, Will inherited Davy Jones's duties when he became captain of the Flying Dutchmann. Including the duty ferrying the souls of those who died at sea to the afterlife and, to some point, make sure they stay dead. If that were so, then shouldn't Will be going after the bad guy? Because him being undead is a violation against the natural order and therefore, making it Will's job to go after him and put him down? By having it be done that way, it'd give the bad guy more motivation to go after the Trident, as it's the only thing that he could use against Will. And by having Will go after him, that'd have him crossing paths with Jack, Barbosa, and his son, therefore giving us some much needed character interaction, like some father-son moments with Henry or have a tiny heart-to-heart reunion with Jack. And even after destroying the trident, have Will be the one to land the finishing blow to the bad guy (though, Will himself dying could be optional), so he'd still fulfill his purpose at the end. Again, probably my bullshit interpretation and I may have worded all that weird but I have a headache and can't think of some better words at the moment (not brought on by this movie, oddly enough).
The only things I liked in Dead Men Tell No Tales is the crazy plan that Jack just manages to rob a bank whilst taking the whole building along with the vault and also the ending, but yeah. This movie is completely horrible and it would've been better if the whole story had been reworked and made less lore breaking, zero character assassination. Bit better than the whole Clergy man and mermaid interspecies romance that was pointless
1234 were good but number 5 was a flop should have ended at 4
Id say strangers tides was worse than dead man.

I still can’t believe how bad this movie is
If anything, you went too easy on it 💀

@@TheSEAempire Oh boy. If you ever move forward with that idea , good luck having to watch that mess again 💀💀
(Would be very interesting to hear your In-depth thoughts tho)
Someone said it, Jack was not Jack here. That alone gets a sub.
