Tekken 8's Special Style "easy mode" may be more powerful than you think!

- So Special Style in Tekken 8 is meant for beginners, sure. However, what if someone a bit better wants to abuse it? Well... I think there's something to exactly that, which is what todays video is. What if you could turn modern controls on and off at will in Street Fighter 6? That's basically what we have here.
0:00 - Why is Special Style actually good?
5:54 - Gaming it to your advantage
7:10 - What did we learn?
9:32 - Not just Mishimas

So like many of you I wrote off "special style" as basically, handholding for babies at the start. However, are aspects of Special Style sort of... abusable? I think so as this video goes into. This isn't SF6 modern controls, you can swap in and out of special style at will on the fly, and the alleged "downsides" of something like a special style electric wind god fist I really don't think are bad at all as we go into the video in depth, so give a watch, like if ya liked it, and let me know what you think!
What is funny about it- if you mashup this console inputs with normal inputs you can use probably easiest ~70-85dmg combos(Reina, confirmed). Im using it sometimes because of time- for me its much more easier to use EWGF with it than without it. So... simply when you hybrid it it's very useful. Especially on the beginning to have fun and later when you want to learn this game.
Can you chain them together? It's common to do 3 or 4 ewgf to juggle the opponent for big damage, but with baby mode i assume it just continues the auto combo
Thank you so much for making this video! Have been requesting one on this topic 🎉🎉
I generally do the opposite when it comes to easy inputs in fighting games, I expect the devs don't fully understand that some char get really powerful easy inputs. It happened in SF6 and it seems it happened in T8. I don't even feel it's good for beginners to have easy inputs available in ranked, it might also discourage the new players that want to learn regular inputs but then lose often to other beginners mashing 1. Easy inputs is much better not being in ranked.
Nah, if I see Mishimas bring this menu up, I'm crouching right away.
I normally do this I can electric okay manually but when players see it pop up the crouch then I turn it off and do mid in heat rush 😈
Yes, exactly. It’s also the mixup/mind game factor. 😮

He is, but most people I go up against (red rank atm) aren't very subtle about it.

HAHAHA that actually made me laugh holy moly 🤣🤣

Alright next video HOPEFULLY should be the first of our Tekken 8 character guides, due to being by far the most requested it will be King! Also we should finally slip back into other games soon as the big Evo announcement event is soon, new Ed info has to be like... sometime soon right? and who knows what else

I don’t hate special style but as a newer tekken player who only played 7 and tekken tag 2 part of the fun is learning how to do inputs but I get some people just want to play the game and not worry about inputs
I honestly can't comprehend why they wouldn't just...give special style the normal WGF, electric is so unnecessary
@@ShikiRyougi05 yeah It kinda sucks too because I feel like out of 10 time I can probably only do 2-3 myself but I think they did that so Mishima’s are easier for newer people to pick up and use
I mean I don’t wanna sweat so I could just press a button and still shit on players regardless so that’s why this is fun
The mishima Special Style should be a WGF not an electric. I believe thats how it was in 7. Plus on block, fast recovery, pushback, frame perfect launcher should not be on one button lol
late reply but I remember it doing electric. I was using it in story mode while learning t7 and I remember being shocked it gave me electric lol
Yeah there’s no reason for it to be the perfect input. You don’t need the perfect for the mash combo. No reason to give the plus frames. If they want to make it safe on block that’s one thing, but the full +5 plus frames is unnecessary
@@Antroz0197 I could be wrong but yeah I remember that also. I think it's only story mode though.
i love how this feels like it's balanced just by telling the other playing on screen you are using 1 button mode and having to deal with the shame of it lol
I think shame is gonna be the single greatest deterrent against this tech, otherwise it would be very widespread

Yesterday, my first set against a Victor online was one who toggled on and off the special style and I lost. It was frustrating to say the least, but I'll take notes for next time I face someone who plays like that, lol!
Maybe don’t take a video game so seriously and like you have any sort of prestige because you don’t use features in said video game
@@dramamine755 I can see why bro can get frustrated, imagine putting in time and effort to learn the in’s and out of a character but a person who toggled special style can do all that with just spamming one button.
Tbh I think using special style hinders the user in properly learning fundamentals but for a causal player I can kinda see why they don’t wanna put in the hours into a single character.
You have me seriously considering turning special style on for just a half second so I can get an Electric. I started practicing God Fists in Tekken 7 two months ago in preparation for Reina and to this day every single Electric I've done has been 100% by accident.
Best advice i can give you is after you press forward let go of directions then press down forward. The star means from neutral
if you want extremely consistent electrics you gotta pay $200+ for a cross up so yea...

You can't do the electric combos as spamming it will make an auto combo. Not to mention the slower speed to
putting electrics on easy mode is just paradoxical.
I'd get putting a WGF there, but the whole point of the electric is the execution.
100% agree. This is stupid.
Have you fought against Kuma yet every Kuma can do 3 electrics in a row
@habijjj kuma has to be in heat to do it, and at that point the Mishima's always turn into the electrics so it's a moot point that kuma can do it
Thank you so much for making a video on this. I'm a fighting game player that used to only stick to games like for honor and lethal league because as a disabled person, the depth of inputs was too much for street fighter and games like this one. The existence of modern and special style allow me to play competitively for the first time and I've picked up these games and I am enjoying an immensely fun time. Especially with the ability to toggle on and off. It allows me to do what I can in normal mode and supplement if there are any inputs that are too difficult because of the way my hands work. I really like your content. Thank you for making videos like this that make the game more accessible to people with disabilities. I'm so happy I can use modern and special style in ranked as well.

I think it'd be neat if they had options for how the special style appears mid match, such as condensing it to just the buttons off to the side. could be a nice thing to have for improving players and for players using it for shortcuts like this

Thanks for the great video. I've tried not to use it, but turn it on by mistake all the time. Might try to incorporate this into my routine.
I'll have to check out what my characters have available. Finding out you can plink this makes it 10x more useful, and seeing the menu at all likely will make the opponent underestimate you. Probably will vary a lot in usefulness by character.
Thank Rooflemonger! As a player who plink so much in streetfighter4. This plink version of EDGW is so intuitive to me. It takes me only 3 mins of practice to change all my combo routes to the electric version of the god fist. I hope street fighter 5 could add in such one button swap between modern and classic, so that I dont need to do the awkward down down input.
Downside is you can't do electric combos or auto combo will come out. And it's slower.
@@CrystalMang0 I plink in and out of the assist mode within 3 frames, the moment the opponent get hit by the EDGF, I am already in normal mode.So I can do most of the combos with no problem😉. Yea, as u said, this technique will not able to do frame perfect EDGF combos (13frame). But no matter what I also can’t do those 0 frame combos. So I find this matter really works for me.
Street fighter 5 has modern control?
This shouldn't be a thing in ranked mode.
Or at least it should only be selectable before joining a match and you can't switch it on and off mid match

The crazy thing it is and people try to abuse it and still get whooped badly😂
My first tekken ever and if I see that menu pop it’s now my duty to make u get better
Only people that rely on it are scrubs, they dont even realise you’ve already adapted to the 1 launcher they’re just spamming, then they try to do lows and mess up cause they dont even know what moves going to come out
Exactly I'm trying to fight. If feels like cheating and skipping putting in inputs .
I kind of thought of turning it off earlier today while trying to learn Kazuya. I don’t really use special style so I mapped it to pressing down on the left stick. While I’m trying to practice the electric wind god fist input I start using the left stick instead of the d pad to see if it would help my timing and I accidentally press it down and press triangle. This is when I figured out that the first move in the special air combo was the exact move I was practicing for an hour. If I ever map the button to the bumper again maybe it might be worth it to use it just for that move 😅.
I will try it for combo extensions
I could see this adding another layer of mix up in a way if you see somebody playing a Nishima and they pull the menu up, you might be able to condition them to expect an electricheck but then drop it and bait a punish or throw something Wild like an air combo instead.. I wonder if this will see any sort of play in tournament or the proceor if they might even just ban it outright in competitive
I'm torn on it. Tekken 8 being my first since Tag, it helped me see the combos for people I don't know and made story mode fun without knowing everyone. But...Ranked is essentially nonstop people pulling off ridiculous combos in low ranks compared to me struggling to learn new combos.
Because they probably hit the lab before hopping online
@@Slimerson93practicing combos in training mode and in a match is way different
well low ranked is a little scewed right now because people of all skill levels have to grind through it to get where they should be.
U don't practice combos in ranked, you execute them. Practice and patience. If you can't combo a training dummy u can't combo a ranked opponent.

It's great for story mode/arcade or people who really just want to casually button mash, but imo in online lobbies there should be an option for it and in ranked it should be completely disabled.
There's been a back and forth debate in streetfighter community regarding Classic vs. Modern control's for sf6 since launch
Thanks a lot for the vid. I'm a complete Tekken noob, trying to learn this overwhelming game from scratch. I kind of shied away from Special style for exactly the reasons stated (and also out of fear that I'd have to re-learn to play properly if I wanted to get past "scrub leagues").
This vid gave me a lot of food for thought.
This is very interesting! Because I've been playing tekken from the first one. And I really love the game but execution was always the part what held me back. Could you perhaps test taunt jet upper with Bryan Fury
I'm noticing I can't move as fast after using special style and can't do the same combos if I had done it manually. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong?
I’m a newbie/ casual I just feel cheesy bringing this menu up, I rather play and see what combos I can cook up by myself
Learning to do it yourself is so much more rewarding than taking the easy way out just because you want to see the flashy stuff. I'm still working on my manual electrics.
Learn how to play without it first, then if you wanna integrate it into your playstyle it can be a good mindgame when players see the menu come up

@@dramamine755 casuals are the real elitists, as always.
Had a Raven that spammed special style which was a leg sweep and won against me. On certain characters it's pretty strong and can even elevate players to intermediate ranks.
There is some applications you can do with this. I tested Reina Special style in punishment and whiff punishment scenarios. You can’t punish -19f kids with this. Hellsweeps you can though. Whiff punish scenarios it can’t be used if the move has a lot of end lag but those are usually reserved for moves you shouldnt be using in the first place. This might help if you’re new but it’s a crutch because you can’t use this with wavedashes. Only the wind god fist comes out. If someone actually makes this useful down the line it needs to be banned immediately
As Azucena main I feel flattered that she is target dummy at every single scene :D
... Why are people not mentioning the obvious negative side to this not mentioned in the video, oh right here are the SF players that don't realize EWGF has utility outside being an uppercut to use in neutral. For most Mishimas, this is your main and only launch punisher from standing, while other characters start launching at -15, Mishimas get to launch punish at -13 or -14 depending on the character and obviously at 18 frames it's just not usable there. Next, there is a lot of value in delaying your EWGF for various reasons, in particular in combos.
Also some people in the comments seem to believe it was just a WGF in T7 assist mode, it was full electric, I believe it was slower but maybe even the same speed.
I think it can be utilize also as the range art or I'm done case heat burst depending the moment of the match
I like the theory. I'll give it a shot. Just switch it up and try to stay upredicatble!
Yeah id been practicing electrics but I value consistency over one or two frames faster ewgf. Guess im doing this now!
I just don’t get people complaining about something in the game if your good as you say you is it shouldn’t even matter how people play the game
I play mishimas and the problem is for good combos, u need 2 back to back electrics its fine if u mess one up because itll still work but if u use the assist electric then u only get 1 and thats a significant amount of less dmg
Funnily enough I could get use out of this on Azucena cause it skips having to mess up my fff3,2 input and accidentally getting a ff f+32 lmao. My binds can't really fit it though
Honestly I'd prefer to not be a special style especially in ranking where ppl are doing honest grind(except boosters and hackers)where they are putting the fruits of their training to the test
Also some characters have near inescapbale juggles (yes im bad) availiable through this, one of the bears (i dunno which one because ot was a stupid ass custom skin) can launch you and then leap at you to spon you again with like 2 buttons over and over.
Othought about the implications of special style and tried some of it and it has potentia. I was saying this to myself during the cbt. It is an untapped resource for possible strategy. I’ll look more into one day but right now I’m just enjoying tekken 8.
"Untapped resource for potential strategy" is the most creative way I've ever seen anyone describe legal hacks.
Special Style has a big Issue that makes it worse then SF6 Modern Mode.
Modern Mode in SF6 has pros and cons, yeah you get stuff like instant Shoryukens but you lose Access to a lot of your moveset and you do less Damage.
The Big Issue with Special Style is that it almost has no disadvantages because you can opt in and out freely mid match, it should be like SF6 modern mode where you have to choose on the Character select Screen, either they change it this way or they need to remove electrics from Special style.
Nope special style is awesome as dpad is worse without it.
@@brandonsantoso it can stay, just make it a choice before starting a match, without the option to switch back and forth mid fight
Was playing against a devil jin in orange ranks who used only special style. you don't know how f'ing distracting it actually is to see this menu which covers part of the character model aswell, depending on the move... .
Can you use this in ranked tho?
Tekken 7 had something similar with assist mode. Now im not sure if this is the same as what we have in 8 but you can customize what moves you can have in the assist menu. I never used it so i cant confirm if you can do easy ewgfs in 7 like this. But i do know assist mode does work online in 7.
I only used this to speedrun all of the ghost battles and arcade battles to defeat all of the bosses
In theory, I don't mind this type of stuff with special style or modern controls, but I don't want it in competitive online play. It only brings more and more problems as we discover
You dont want it because you lose to it? Thats how I know that you suck at the game scrub mentality
The only problem I see is you being a SCRUB keep giving me free wins 🤣
As soon as I played the demo i was like "I wonder, and I hope, that they put some mad thing in where a year from now we'll see some maniac shifting between modes for optimal combos." But I dont have the knowledge on this game to have been able to tell if it was just baby mode or not.
I hope some mad shit is ahead of us!
Is it tournamnent legal, because faught a lot high level rank match had speciality move always on... is like SF6 all over again 😢😢😢
What happens if you do this electric during a wavedash
then you just get the electric anyways
I don't think I can as a Kaz player.
I just imagine Kazya saying "pathetic..." if i cheated out an electric.
Learning the execution IS part of the character I chose.
what is the best character for special style?
Kuma
Wouldn't it be fun if this led to mind games, where a player uses special style for a certain move a couple times to train the opponent to expect a certain move when the window pops up and then the player fakes it by quickly toggling special style on and off just to make the opponent expect the move. Like a shimmy.
I just started playing and use it for the electric, don't see the need for all the other stuff tbh. Getting consistent with the electric frame timing as someone new to controllers and fighting games will probably take me months. Doing 15 mins of practice a day but happy I have something to use until I get good!
I am wondering can that modern EGGW link into the normal mode combos?😮
Yes but because it is slower you wont be able to do stricter combos which will optimize damage. So its not just speed.

It's mapped to a shoulder button by default. L2, I think? Go into your controls and unbind it if you don't like it, it'll save you the confusion
Yeah the first few matches I had, I completely discredited it as a threat. 10 seconds later I got absolutely bodied lmao

Skill issue. Special style basically tells you their inputs and does the exact same moves. If you can’t punish them for it by side stepping or other choices, then you’re just not good enough for a higher rank.

If you are going to bypass every single barrier that a powe rmove has without almost no penalty, it's borderly unfair.
I figured I'd use special style like this when I first played the demo but by the time the game dropped I took it out my setup calling myself being honorable but if everybody just gonna use it I think im putting it back. The extra moves wouldn't hurt.
Wow, it's like you can start a combo and finish with special style so you don't tdrop it. Or expand the combo further.
I've always played as Mishimas and I hate this easy mode thing. Tekken has always been a game that rewards execution this makes things way too easy in my opinion.
@rooflemonger
I respect your willingness to keeping an open mind for these kinds of play options. As fellow "old" man, it's very easy to fall into a mindset that actively rejects shortcuts to skills we have spent years (errr...decades) honing, but if we are intellectually honest the truth is that we don't really want there to be a physical barrier keeping the player base from being as large as it can be. We just don't want our hard-earned experience to become meaningless. Time has a tendency to be a bit of a jerk though, and with each passing year the bendy bits and the ends of my arms get just a smidge less reliable (and pain-free). I like that the people making a genre of games that I adore are putting real thought into how to best implement control schemes that allow as many people as possible to enjoy the same games I love.
im new to fighting games and tekken of course idk if I should use special style or learn the normal way fromt he beginning
I am a "only" 2d fighting games player, and i want to go and try tekken, but man this is game is so much diferent, it's not a anime fighting or a king of Fighters or a Street Fighter, the characters have so many moves and the game is so much diferent, this mode made me buy and try the game and the character and this so fun, you can have acess to make great combos and dont be so much noob hehehe, the main factor for me is the fun, tekken 8 now for me became the most fun fighting game because this special style mode.
OG casual here... I used the SS, and for newcomers, it's actually great! It helped my little brother to get into the game...
But eventually you will turn it off because when you pull out a move out of muscle memory, the feeling of accomplishment is simply satisfying
If someone does this at Evo Grand finals does that count as a win?
well yeah why not you can cry about all you want thats just how it is
Special style certainly is baby mode, free electrics is ridiculous. My blood pressure rises when I run into this bs online lol
Mishima are proud beasts... should never use assist
Tmw you button mash regardless of the control style… I’m a tekken newb though and at least I’m starting to feel like I’m button mashing a little less than before
This is kinda broken for people that use keyboard macros tbh. Usually if they macro something like EWGF they have to macro 2 keys, one for each side, but with this its literally 1 button EWGF, 1 button hellsweep. People are still figuring out stuff with special style tap to optimize combos or make them more confortable/consistent, but if keyboard macros becomes something widespread it will be kind of a problem in the future.
I try to low parry them, because you can see what button they pressed on their menu
also if I see this menu pop up I'm judging you
You can do multiple combos with it they don’t really tell you about. You have to figure it out yourself
Modern is way better at making the game accessible without learning inputs then it is at carrying a noob to win the match. so I think its good and fine but maybe a bit too good. atleast u can still make classic inputs but I think tekken8 did a better job
these controls are far more limited but they are not actually that bad especially at a low level. I really like what tekken did he to make the game accessible, and the "downsides" were things said for modern in SF6 and look how that turned out. I think these controls are a tool you can "abuse" if you are a smart player and you should since they are in the game.
I still choose not use it because i still haven’t master the electric wind god fist on both sides
Will it do Lee's Mist trap?
I don't know every move for every char, but test it out for yourself!
One button electrics is crazy😂😂
I think the only people who actually care about people using special style are the people who are actually garbage lol
This is my first tekken actually playing and I’m a Bryan in Fujin, I switch through special mode mid combo and people get mad lol
Tried thid alot in demo. In short; this is slower like when using a kazuya using a ewgf after df2; it wont connect. Good thing is a sidestep electric will be 100 percent dangerous. Good luck mishima mains
I tried doing an EWGF all for hours last night. Couldn't get it once.
If I see the special style pop up I’m charging a gigaton
SS "electrics" are actually slower than just doing proper electrics... like 3 frame startup slower, which might not sound a lot, but it can either be a punish, or not.
yeah, i kinda spend a lot of the video talking about it, and its more like 1-2 frames even when you are FAST, which more than makes them worth it
Last night played against a Steve player who was in the red ranks so I thought he’d be pretty decent I thought wrong. Dude had special style enabled through both matches. I thought he was good but I was wrong. Dude rage quit the second set we played😂
Ive challenged myself from the beginning learning this game without it. I get kinda annoyed when im win 2 rounds in a row and ill see the competitor turn this on.
Special style makes the game great. The combat is so clanky without it back even on ps2 and it was just atrocious to behold. With this it feels more Dead or alive which is great.
If a strong move is balanced by requiring strong execution to pull if off, then putting that move on a single button doesn't feel right.
Are still able to rank up with special style? I thought Tekken didn’t allow it.
no mode prohibits the use of special style
It’s great for new comers. But it’s very predictable once you graduate from it. Yesterday, I fought a devil jin abusing power crush with it so I just grabbed dude continuously and bro was not teaching the throws. Shit was hilarious 😂
Whenever I see this menu I know the match is gonna be some bullshit
You also get access to moves while you are crouching, that you cannot execute with normal style. I'm sure someone will come out a broken strat and they will ban this
