    This was the first time I watered my large cacti since September!
    They go through a period of dormancy during the fall and winter. Now that we’re in spring, I will go back to watering. When do I water? I water when soil mix is COMPLETELY dry… like BONE dry and these will live outside during the spring and summer to get as much light to keep them happy. For my cacti indoors, they get the brightest window in the house (south facing window) or they get bright light from a grow light.

    I love bottom watering, especially when I'm using expensive fertilizer, you don't need to waste any, just use what is leftover in the container or bowl to water another plant and when there is too little left just top another plant off with it. No waste! Of course make sure your other plants actually need water and fertilizer but I usually have at least 3-10 plants that need water and food on any given day. Bottom watering really makes your plant's roots super healthy because they search downwards for water, it also reduces fungus and therefore fungus nats.

  • @sarahjohnston4782
    @sarahjohnston4782 Год назад +72

    You do want to be very careful with certain varieties when watering this way, if the water sits directly in between grooves, foliage, etc. It can very easily rot since the water will just sit there, and watering when the sun's out doing it this way can also burn them. I personally use hair color application bottles so I can easily water only the grit and keep it off the foliage, also makes it easy to water anything that has foliage extending past the pot which alot of my cacti are since they don't need large pots 9/10 times. But whatever floats ya boat ❤

      Agreed! But it’s helpful to keep fungus gnats away. I’ve got dedicated Tupperware that comes out, everyone gets grouped (or single if they’re giant) into the bins and set in water with a timer on so I don’t forget! 😂

      @@_alice2010_ Cacti are plants that live in the desert(an area that doesn't often have a lot of water.) I had a succulent that I killed because I watered it too often. If you happen to get another cacti ever, I recommend that you water it every 2 weeks during the hotter months, and every 2-3 months in the colder months depending on where you live. Also, you want to make sure that when you water it, you give it no more than 1/2 cup. Check the soil to see if it's dry when you water it and if it isn't, don't water it. Hope this helps! 😅

      Christmas cacti are members of the Schlumbergera genus and come from the tropical coasts of Brazil where it's shady and very humid. They grow on rocks and tree branches and are no where the same catus as portrayed here. These are desert cacti and don't survive in shady and moist.

When it rains in Arizona (or even snows) the water covers the entire cactus. You can't stop this from happening.
