HYPOkalemia - Lecture for Pharmacy Students and Pharmacists.

In this lecture on hypokalemia, we will
• Review the physiology of potassium in the body and how it is regulated.
• List the three main causes of hyperkalemia.
• Name three drugs that can cause hypokalemia and explain their mechanisms.
• List two ECG changes that are observed with progressive worsening hypokalemia.
• State the three different oral potassium dosage forms.
• Outline the maximum rate and concentration for the use of intravenous potassium for peripheral and for central lines.

When there is hypokalemia and Hypomagnesemia. Does it matter which electrolyte is replaced first or can they just be given at the same time?

Potassium replacement takes the priority here, then the magnesium rider can be given after. I have also seen both electrolytes being replenished at the same time too.
