I noticed my neighbor had not driven this van for 2 years. I went over and asked him if he was selling it. He wasn't planning to, and had no idea what vanlife was, he asked $6500, I got him down to 6k. Best thing I ever bought! You never know where your van could come from.

It’s important to remember that almost all those points still apply living in a regular house, you’re still paying astronomical prices for groceries and fuel and power and heat but you still pay 2K a month for rent minimum most places.

yes everything has gone up in price but there are alternatives as Chrome eluded to, ie a smaller van perhaps. For me the key is having a

Many of us 'oldsters' are living in houses that we paid off 10-15 years ago. Rent isn't the incentivizing thing for many of us. We're drowning, in food & utilities & cannot afford to take on a fuel bill, insurance and a vehicle payment. For various personal reasons, I can't sell ... so I drown.

I'd seen a few vanlife videos on YT (including this channel) and I thought that's it, I'm gonna convert my van. That was September 2021. I folded my business January 2022 and started the conversion. No experience doing this before. Now, the van is nearly finished. Should get it done in the next few months. I'm gonna head over to Europe (I'm based in UK) do some fruit picking and head East. See where things take me... :) Also, I quit smoking 1st November 2021 to help afford vanlife. That was one of the best decisions I've made! :)

Here's the part you might not have thought of in this. I bought my van 4 years ago March 15 for around $3k. Now? Four years later? Sure thing I could be a van like this, for probably $20k or more. However in that same period of time rents for apartments and Mortgages for houses increased by 4x or more too. So my old apartment that I was being screwed out of $600 an month is more that $2400 a month.
So yes, vanlife - getting started in it - buying parts for it - everything got so much more expensive. But it's still dramatically cheaper than anything else, anywhere else. And I wish that wasn't the truth, the reality we live in, but it is.
Here's something for you to consider. Mexico is dramatically cracking down on the border now. Not to keep people in, to North Americans OUT!!! They are starting to actively deport and ban Americans from entering Mexico. Know why? They are buying up places, driving up the costs of housing, pushing Mexican people out of cities, because Americans are living in Mexico and commuting, or remote working in America, but still retrying the economy of Mexico. Think about that. Really think about it. The greed and insanity is endemic in North America and spreading like a cancer.
So Vanlife is still cheaper than sticks and bricks.
We have a thriving and growing Nomadic Community here in the US and every year there are huge events in the desert southwest for nomads where we get together and help each other out anyway we can. There are even non profit organizations like the Homes On Wheels Alliance whose entire reason for existing is to help people embrace Nomadic life. They even give away vans, trailers, campers, even tents to those in need who have been displaced by the insanity and unchecked GREED in this country.

The cost of van living is still LOWER than renting an apartment. Of course, if you buy a new expensive van it will cost you. Believe me, I'm a Realtor in NY, rentals are sky high. The cost of food and transportation is what it is. You have to eat if you work you probably have to commute to it...A 1 br in my area rent is an average of $2000 and up (US price). There are also up front costs to renting i.e. 1st month rent, last month rent, security deposit (equal to a full month rent) credit check and agent fee if applicable. You could be looking at 6K and up just to move in. Then you have to furnish it and you still have to eat! The cost of living is going up, a tiny home on wheels is still more cost effective....it doesn't build equity but neither does renting.

I was heading into van life since 2016. I was sure I’d be living in a van by 2019. I quit the plan in 2020 because I needed to take care my mother so I used van life $ to buy a place instead of renting. This year I am slowly getting my suv prepared to do a few days of car camping here and there. When it’s time to replace my car 5/10 years down the road, I’d get a city cargo van to be more comfortable car camping.

Another brilliant video Chrome. More super-relatable content. One thing to remember is that renters pay the same price for groceries as van dwellers do - so you’re not worse off in a van. And those high interest van repayments went towards paying off *your* home, not someone else’s. And for a lot of people, fuel prices won’t increase by much (unless their new home uses a *lot* more fuel than their old vehicle did). They’ll be driving the same distance as they always have. So, although the nett cost of living is higher than when you started van life, it’s no higher relative to renting an appartment. 😉👍

    It’s all relative.
Food is the same if you van or sticks and bricks.
Housing is expensive. Taxes are a killer, insurance is hell, and maintenance is costly if you can’t do it yourself.
So everything has gone up except wages.
So a van is still the best.
I got extremely lucky and bought my 04 Econoline for $500!

I've been watching some videos on older people like over 70 living in their vans in the US because they can't afford the rent and being able to pay for food and insurance. Weather conditions in the US is better for Van life I think just from me watching the videos. I find this all interesting . I camp during the summer in a camper but as I get older I won't be able to pull the camper and do the heavy lifting required for setting up. At that time I will look for a small van I think. Just couldn't imagine being over 70 (I'm close :) ) and living in a van during the winter in Canada because you had too. My heart goes out to anyone who might be in that spot.
