The game certainly has an irresistible charm which is quickly shadowed by some of the annoying points of the game, like the fact that you have to almost sprint through the entire level to finish it in time. -

Dark Souls is a walk in the park compared to the GnG games. Super Ghost n' Ghouls is one of the hardest games I've ever seen, and Ultimate Ghost n' Goblins is also absurd.

Shendue i think SGNG is hard due to technical reasons (AKA the constant slowmo that affected the control response a lot). I heard there's a fix that removes the game's slowmo and makes it more playable (in a very good way).
UGNG, on the other hand, I can't agree more with your statement. That game is hard for real, legit lessons. And highly underrated.

For a game so old, it's impressive that it was capable of scrolling diagonally. Most games of this era could only scroll left-right or up-down at once.

The red devils are insanely hard, they alone make me question the veracity of this video. Sometimes they swoop in so fast at an angle you can't help but get hit.

Plus, he got the axe. The worst weapon in the game. Plus, he picked up the item that turns you into a frog. I very highly suspect savestates

Ah, what good memories of youth with this good old arcade game. Sometimes I still play it from time to time to pass the time thanks to an emulator, and I admit I still love it so much.

It's amazing how in just nine years, Capcom got from the true ending of this game (even more mistakes than the arcade version, to boot) to a fairly lengthy text scroll entirely in nearly flawless English, even in Japan, for the intro to the first MegaMan X.

Truly one of the top 5 rawest games ever made. This is the Dark Souls of the 80's. This is where rage quitting got started.
You know the saying "you can't argue with results"? Well in the several times I've longplayed this game, not once would I have ever switched away from the knife. That thing is crucial. I give you lots of credit for completing this longplay even with the rapid switching of weapons that occurred throughout. I've attempted, but god the firebrand and axe are garbage, and I'd get killed by the gargoyles in level 3 because of it.

I like how in NES games, the music glitches when certain sound effects over lap it...
Limitations on the amount of sound channels the NES had if you're looking for a more technical explanation.
It's because the NES had only 5 sound channels. 2 square wave channels, 1 triangle wave channel, 1 white noise channel (usually used for drums) and 1 sample channel. Samples took a lot of space on the cartridge, so they were usually very simple. If all channels are used for music, then some sound effects will interrupt it.

Thank God for the emulator on my PSP that allows me to save any point of the game and load it until I reach new levels. Still cant get past all the Red Devils in the castle. Shit is insanely hard.

Damn, this game used to scare the shit out of me as a kid. Probably cuz of the music and the extremely dark and demonic nature of it I don't know. I could never get past the 2nd stage. I don't think I even want to try now that I'm in my 30s. You did great though. Well done!
Me too, i was not an easy give up kid back then, but this game just different, it feels weired feeling when i played this game, especially when mu character died. I just cant try more than stage 2.

+Birikin Yeah, it is. Also: if you don't want the "This room is a trap" ending, aim for the face on his stomach.
The thing about it is, to access the 7th level in a legitimate run, you do need the shield. Otherwise, there's a level select code that will grant you access there without the shield. You can kill the devil with whatever weapon you choose if you do that.
The code is this:
On the title screen, hold Right while pressing B three times, then release Right
Press Up (don't hold it) and press B three times
Press Left and press B three times
Press Down and press B three times
You choose what level and what checkpoint with the A and B buttons, then press Start to load it.
The music that plays in stages 5 and 6 plays in my head for every time I get my report card:D

I just came here to tell you all, that after hundreds of tries, I finally could finish this game today on my original Family Game console!! It was a pain in the ass with those fuckin' devils, but I made it. After suffering the first time and gaining some experience, the second time the gameplay is easier! It's not impossible, never give up!!

I see lots of talk about how some of the stuff done in this playthrough would require TAS. To me, its totally irrelevant. This isn't a video claiming to be anything other than a longplay, so if some Tools were used so as to give me a better idea of what I'm facing later in the game, so what?

The feat accomplished at around 29:58 is not possible. Played this part. You have to retreat down the ladder to stand a chance.
I remembered this was one of the most difficult game i ever played.
The original arcade game is one of the hardest platformers ever but the infamous NES version takes the cake.

That's what I was thinking after seeing how long it took to take out the first devil, As well as a ghost or two.

There are strategies that are safer than others, so when somebody runs right into potentially dangerous spots with no punishment because they always act just the right way.. you know it’s some nonsense. And I’ve beaten GnG several times at this point!

Hah! This has got to be one of the most difficult and aggravating games ever released. My copy eventually ended up under my refrigerator after I ripped it out of my NES and threw it into the kitchen. I did manage to beat it, though after watching this video I'm not sure how I did it
