- In this abstract painting warm-up exercise demo, I'm going to show you how I make sure I don’t overthink when I use a variety of acrylic paints to create a unique abstract painting.
First things first, let me explain what an abstract painting warm-up exercise is. This exercise is designed to help you get in the zone and loosen up before starting a larger painting. It's a chance to play with color, texture, and form without worrying too much about the end result.

I've got my palette ready with green gold, pyrrole red, cerulean blue, cadmium yellow deep hue, Payne's gray, titanium white, and pale pink acrylic paint. I'm not going to overthink this painting, I'm just going to let my intuition guide me.
I start by laying down some Payne’s gray in my sketchbook with a brayer. I then use broad strokes of cerulean blue and cadmium yellow deep hue to create a base layer. Then, I add some Green gold and pyrrole red to create depth and texture. As I continue to paint, I add more colors and textures, blending and layering as I go.
What I love about this abstract painting warm-up exercise is that it allows me to experiment with different techniques and materials. I can use a brush, a palette knife, or even my fingers to apply the paint. The possibilities are endless, and the end result is always surprising.
As I work on this painting, I'm reminding myself not to overthink it. I'm just letting the paint flow and enjoying the process. I'm using my instincts and intuition to guide me, which is something that's important to me as an artist.
If these aren’t a part of your daily routine, I hope this video has inspired you to try an abstract painting warm-up exercise for yourself. Remember to use a variety of acrylic paint, and don't overthink it! Just let your creativity flow and see where it takes you. Thank you for watching!

Love turning on my American Native drumming and flute meditative tunes. It opens the channels for my paintings to be fully inspired by my intuition.
Hey Joie! That sounds like a wonderful combination for relaxing and intuitive painting.
Music 🎶 all the time. Loving your videos.
Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks so much, Rose!
Great philosophy Chris. Ive been an overthinker my whole life pretty much. I notice it now and tell myself to shut up. Painting and music and meditation all help. I agree with your comment on abstract art. I find if i work too realistically I tend to overwork. Love the composition which tells me a feeling of ancient ruins. Thank you,
Thank you, Julia! It's funny how easy it is to overthink and how difficult it is sometimes to just relax, enjoy and let our intuition take over. I can see what you're talking about with a feeling of ancient ruins.❤️
Love how the fine tip paint added just another layer and pop!
Thanks, Caryn!
This piece really turned out wonderfully I didn't expect that
Thanks, Crystal! Sometimes they're surprises to me as well.😊
Spiral side down-and wow! You had a great composition!
Thanks so much, Dawna!
Love this painting, Chris. Much thanks for the full demo and dialogue.
Thanks, Ann! So glad you enjoyed it 😊
Music inspires most things in me. I was lucky enough to come across some really talented percussive guitarists, and, their music sets me on a creative path. The music takes hold, and that is when my mind stops thinking, and I just paint.
I agree, music is big for me in keeping my mind off the painting. If you don't mind me asking who are the percussive guitarists? I'd like to check them out?
Thanks, Emily! What I've heard so far I really like and can easily see painting to these. I'm totally into Stricagnoli's cover of Madness at the moment. I'll give these both more of a listen while I paint today. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@chrisloudart My apologies for disturbing, but, I have more musical artists you may love. They are classic in the guitar work. Preston Reed is one. He is one of the founding father’s of percussive guitars. Tommy Emmanuel is another. His sound is what a lot of guitarist go into lessons wanting to learn. And, if you want to go further back, Chet Atkins has a Nashville southern sound that is used in almost every well versed guitarists repertoire. I usually go for Marcin’s music to paint to, and Luca’s has a punch that is fun to paint to, but, these other artists may be something you may try as well.
Thank you Chris. That exactly what i need to do. I do more of watching tutorials than i do painting myself.
Hey Diane! Watching art videos is quite addictive. I get caught up watching a lot of painting videos instead of painting myself now and then.
Bonjour Chris 😊😊 c'est magnifique ❤❤❤❤
Hey Martine! Merci beaucoup ❤️
Gotta say I hope you carry on with abstracts. I like them much better than the fruits, way more fun to watch.
They're way more fun to paint too! I don't see myself going away from abstracts any time soon.
Un très beau résultat. Un mariage de couleurs et de formes très harmonieux. J'aimerai tant être aussi libre que vous dans votre manière de peindre.
Je vous remercie pour cette belle démonstration.
Merci beaucoup, Ouahiba!
Wow, I really like the way you paint and the colors are so beautifully balanced. Love the resulting painting! It really draws me in.
Thanks, Sara!
Oh Chris you make it look so easy. I’ll keep trying, even though I have more duds than good ones. 😀
Thanks, Kerrie! Embrace the duds while you have them! They won't be around too long. I always look at the lesser paintings as possible backgrounds for future ones.
Very enjoyable to watch. I listen to opera or my oldies. I like that your videos don't have music as I find it so distracting. But I do listen while I create! Really enjoying your content tremendously! Got a sketchbook yesterday and you have inspired me to get it broken in!
Thanks, Kathy! Opera and a sketchbook sounds like a great combo!
adding that depth at the end? master decision. ty Chris! great video!
Thank you so much!
Very nice what you did....So simply and GREAT...
Thanks, Grozda!
Magnífico. A.D.O.R.O ❤❤❤❤
Thank you!😊
once u added the red, it really started coming together
The funny thing is that red was the color I didn't think would work with the others, but I agree that seemed to be what pulled it together.
Love the brights colors in this! In one of the vertical orientations there is a great face!
Thanks, Tracy! I hadn't noticed that before. Is the mouth in the lower left corner?
Yep! The horizontal orangey shape. Love it!
I love it!
Thanks, Kathe!
Kewl!
Thanks, Karen!
These colors are gorgeous and your videos continue to inspire me. I like the portrait orientations, although all of them are beautiful. Thanks again for another great video.
Thanks, Peggy! The portrait orientations are starting to grow on me. Happy painting!
Thank you Chris- you are a Great inspiration to me to create these 15 min practice pieces. My love is the Orca whale and I am planning on trying to do this type of art with hints of orca in them. I am so thankful to have found your channel and I’ll be a lifelong subscriber… 🎉Oh, I like to listen to music- instrumentals like George Winston’s seasons - while painting, And/play videos like yours while creating my own work - God Bless you and your family 😊
Thanks, Kelli! I bet you'll have a wonderful time incorporating Orcas into your artwork. I'd love to see what you come up with. I'm sure listening to George Winston makes for peaceful and stress free painting sessions! Thanks for watching and subscribing. All the best! 😊
This really enchanted me Chris. The moment I felt the painting emerge was when you laid down the teal colour followed by the yellow... You are so motivational and the reminder to get through the ugly phase is good as well as just trying out whatever comes to mind. Thank you. 😊😊😊
Thanks so much, Emmanuel! It's comments like yours that truly inspire me.
Always inspiring! Thank you Chris for your really good advises! I am trying my self with this intuitiv painting. Not so easy. We have too much real images in our brain! And less focus….I let you know wether i succed or not.
Keep sharing your paintings! I love it.
Thanks
Thanks, Meriem! You are so right, we have too many images in our brains that want to creep into our art. I look forward to hearing how it goes!
Love this piece, Chris. You make the process look effortless, but I am well aware it isn't always that way. Your comment, "Make hideous art"; that's my take away from this video. I can certainly manage that lol.
Thanks, Richard! Haha, believe me, I'm pretty good at making "hideous art", I just don't show those in the videos.
Particularly liked 3rd orientation in final sequence. Two blue circles at bottom...
The first one is still my favorite so far, but we'll see if that holds true after a couple of days.
