  • Saigon (also called Ho Chi Minh City) is one of Vietnam's most popular cities for good reason: it has a vibrant and youthful vibe, historical buildings and monuments, and everything to make life modern and comfortable. But Saigon isn't perfect, and we'll discuss those downsides as well. We will also rate Saigon for visiting as a short term tourist, as well and for living as a long term expat. Come to Saigon with us!
    𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (Summer 2023)
    Everyone lives a different lifestyle, and it's impossible to know exactly how much you would be spending in Saigon. Here is a sample montly budget for us if we were living in Saigon, based on our personal lifestyle (in US dollars, for two people):
    $650 Housing and Utilities
    $400 Food
    $50 Transportation
    $150 Extras (Cell Phone, Entertainment, Clothing, etc.)
    $1250 TOTAL
    And here are a few more expenses that may or may not apply to your situation:
    $100 Health
    $300 Insurance
    $150 One Trip To Visit Family In The US
    $200 Two Or Three Vacations Per Year
    $2000 GRAND TOTAL
    𝗔 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆
    Is it called Ho Chi Minh City, or is Saigon the proper name? I had always thought that this city was called Saigon before the war ended, but then the name was changed to Ho Chi Minh City after the war. This is technically true, and the official name became Ho Chi Minh City in 1975. But after coming here, we discovered that both the local residents and foreigners still quite often refer to it as Saigon. This is why I mostly refer to the city as Saigon throughout the video (and also because Saigon is easier to say than Ho Chi Minh City in the video script).

    Thanks for sharing your experiences at Saigon. I can't give any rating because never been there. Your video gave me some info about the living life in Vietnam. Hope one day, I able to visit Saigon. Thanks again, enjoy your vacation...

    We were in Saigon earlier this year, and I have to agree with you on all points. It's an interesting city, there's lots to do, the food is fantastic and the coffees are the best in the world (seriously!). We also found Saigon loud, chaotic, very hot, and people were nice but kinda rough.
    The best way I can describe it is I liked the city, but didn't love it, if it makes sense.

      Yes, the way you describe Saigon makes sense, and we completely agree with your assessment. Thanks once again for watching our videos!

    I’m jealous of the American breakfast, they are hard to find here in Phuket. Usually it’s more of an English breakfast or some weird hybrid with eggs, ham, hot dogs, toast and usually a salad and mixed vegetables. Definitely not eggs, sausage and bacon (or pancakes!) like I’m accustomed to.

      I hear you! That breakfast was such a treat, the best American breakfast we've had since we were last in the US. I'm surprised that Phuket doesn't have something similar considering how touristy it is there.

      @@snailtravelers Some of the high end resorts might have something closer to that but, you know us, we look for the deals. 😆

    I missed your usual poem at the start of every video. I personally tend to like less crowded places, cooler temperature, more affordable to visit, roads not heavily jammed with traffic and polite/friendly people. Which country or city would you recommend apart from Cameron Highlands in Malaysia 🇲🇾? Thank you Ryan & Emily.

      Thanks, I tried to make a poem but couldn't come up with enough words that rhyme with Saigon 😆. We have similar preferences, especially for cooler weather. There is a place in Vietnam in the mountains called Dalat that has nice weather all year; it is Vietnam's version of Cameron Highlands. Thanks, as always, for watching our video!

    How have you found the food sanitation to be in Vietnam in general? I had a friend go there recently, said they got food poisoning from a (delicious) banh mi

    • @snailtravelers
      @snailtravelers  8 месяцев назад +1

      No problems for us, but we have heard of other travelers getting food poisoning. We have tried to be more careful, usually choosing places to eat ahead of time and looking for places with good reviews on Google. Even the small family run street food places mostly have reviews. Sometimes if we're at a street market we'll just eat whatever looks good without checking reviews and haven't had any problems. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the video. :-) At least 80% of the people who've been to Saigon that I've talked to have said they liked it. So I am in the minority when I say I didn't (I went over ten years ago). First, it got really annoying being constantly accosted by peddlers especially around the park and they wouldn't give up. Second, the hot weather. Third, there was the language barrier and overall I didn't get a very warm impression starting from the airport. Fourth, I didn't care for suddenly seeing a scooter and in one case a motorcycle heading toward me while on the *sidewalk*. Fifth, I didn't really find it that interesting. Finally, I prefer the food in other SEA countries. Saigon was too rough around the edges for me. Someone told me to visit the delta area IF I go again. Cheers.

      Hello David, I'm sorry you had a negative experience in Saigon. We also experienced some of those things you mentioned, but not at the magnitude that you describe. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts about Saigon; I think it is helpful for our viewers to know about the experiences of others because everyone has different observations.

      @@snailtravelers And I appreciate you covering Saigon because it does make me consider giving it another try down the road. My only visit was over 10 years ago and most people have said they had a good experience. Love your concise videos. They cover what travelers like me want to know.

    Which city in Vietnam had the best overall health care?

    • @snailtravelers
      @snailtravelers  3 месяца назад

      I don't have a definite answer, but I would guess Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. They are the two biggest cities and will have more options. Health care can be lacking in the rural areas and villages.
