I was entered by a friend in a small amateur badminton tournament playing in men's & mixed doubles categories after 2 years of badminton hiatus and had about a week to prepare lol. -Saturday the week before: played 1 hour to see where my technique's at. Found my timing and footwork/swing technique really off to the point where I wasn't confident in jump-smashing and had to resort to clears instead. If I did try to smash, they'd be flat-ish and carried no threat. It was so bad it was frustrating. -Sunday the week before to the following Saturday: watched this video along with the "HOW to smash" one and religiously followed the steps, spending about an hour daily training on my own at home. -Sunday (yesterday): Became champion in both categories XD. Granted it wasn't a big tournament, but the difference this video has made in a week was night and day. Gotta say when I regained confidence in my jump smash, it filters through to other aspects of my gameplay as well, so it really helped. Thanks so much Aylex! 😃
i've watched both your smash videos and have the following comments about what i like and dont like about the way you teach and/or perform smash. like: 1) you emphasize getting your body behind the shuttle so that your energy comes forward to smash, not backwards or straight up. the energy is forwards. there are many details to the smash, but if a beginner learns only one thing, it should be to do the work to get your body behind the shuttle, not beneath it, so your energy comes forward as you strike. and not only smash, but also clear and drop, get your body well behind the shuttle before you try to strike it. i like the way you said 45 degree angle forward. that is right on, 2) the way you demonstrate pronation seems very clear to me, 3) the way you use throwing to demonstrate the swing. i assume you are in the US from your accent and the word 'bird', and one sport americans understand is baseball. if you look at major league pitchers in slow motion you will see many relevant components of smash and swing. dont like: 1) your flow of energy from the floor to the racket head is compromised by a failure to isolate your hips and rotate them separately in advance of your torso. this means that even though you rotate your body 90 degrees before your smash, you are not taking full advantage of the potential rotational energy there. really, there is no point in rotating your body a full 90 degrees before smash if you do not isolate your hips and rotate them separately, and i have seen players who do not rotate and smash pretty much like you do. shortly after leaving the floor to jump smash, the hips should be about square with the net and the shoulders should still be at about 90 degrees from the net, 2) i do not think your power is being generated early enough and explosively from the floor. there is a kind of push off from the floor but i wanna tell you that whatever you did at the floor is all you got. so your smash is not going develop into something better than what you did at the moment you used your legs to explosively push the earth away from you. players usually believe they'll be able to use their arm to augment their power, but the fastest smashes are done with an arm that does very little. learn to smash steep and powerfully with a completely dead arm and you will learn to get your power from the center of the earth instead of trying to get it from your arm, which doesnt work, 3) i dont think it can work to teach beginners what is basically a stick smash for the swing. if you look in slo-mo at any great smasher, you will see a looong stroke beginning with supination in both arms and the racket head almost touching the lower back, then as torsion from hip rotation flows into the upper body, the racket head moves in a high arc where it has time to generate velocity and both arms are pronating simultaneously. the energy of this swing is basically up toward the sky, not impatiently trying to strike the shuttle downwards or forwards. stick smash is an intentional short circuit that can be used in some situations. but the basic swing is a long stroke where you have time to develop velocity and you dont try to strike at the shuttle until the last moment when the stroke is coming down. thank you for your videos
I believe Alex is also trying to make it as easy for beginners as possible. What you have said are all well and good but one has to have a certain degree of experience and plenty of play time already to do it properly. Another useful video for the smash was the one taught by former Japan singles star Kenichi Tago. Cheers!
@@RMASUPERFLY the easy way is always the right way. believing a beginner cant do it the right way and so teaching them the wrong way because you believe it's easier doesnt teach anything, it holds the beginner back, and i am not talking about coach alex here, i am talking about your idea that it's easier to do it the wrong way. i see many coaches allowing their beginner students to practice the wrong things thousands of times. eventually they step in to make a correction. so you can ask yourself, is it easier to try to correct something that has been practiced wrong a thousand times, or to teach the student to do it correctly the first time and then practice it correctly a thousand times?
@@rb-ex I think we learn either which way if one is smart enough to see what stroke he excels at and diligent enough to practice long hours to perfect it. There are more than one way to skin a cat. I myself was taught the long stroke swing for the smash like many others but learned quickly how to do the stick smash ala LZJ. I believe one can also start with a basic stick smash them proceed to the long strokes...

the jump smash is wrong ! as the racket is hold different ! flat ! ( you wonder ) and ! important ! the Armswing is NOT across the body ! WHY ? because against a normal clear or smash ! this is really played with muscle power ! so its in a way ! a beginner mistake move plus a professional move ! study Koreans in excellence ! or European players ! great players bad and wrong technic ,,, still good !

My small-brained friends would make fun of me for jumping because they're ignorant bugs with no sports knowledge
the science behind the footwork momentum part does not make any sense. Momentum cannot change direction like that.
He should said coordination in movement and timing not momentum
