The video seems to be bogus. Where is the disturbance in the sand where the truck drove over the edge? The sand is nice and smooth at that point just like the rest of the edge. If the truck had gone over the edge there would have been a flat, scraped off area where the under carriage drug the sand. Where are the tire tracks going down to the truck? No tire tracks either. And lastly...at that radical slope, gravity would most likely have pulled the truck down hill into the water.

The truck was there long enough for the owner to have left and had to be called back before the recovery could be started.

      @QatarSandMan  11 месяцев назад +1

Yes, they do overheat. I think some advanced Warn winches have a setting that will shut them down when they get too hot, though you can override that with a setting. I think this winch has a continuous duty cycle of around 2 minutes.
However, I just run it till it's too hot to touch. We have air temperatures of 50°C here in the summer, so it's pretty difficult not to exceed the equipment ratings. Basically, a winch is a consumable, I go through a winch every couple of years.

  • @darinruddock3394

Before the point where the truck got high centered, you could have disconnected the snatch block from the rear of the truck and fed it under the truck all the way to a point on the very front of the frame. This would have allowed you to pull it up the rest of the way past the point of getting high centered without the need of a second winch/truck. The reason is because once the rear bumper was up in the air, you are pulling the truck down against the very sand that you’re trying to get past. By feeding the cable to the front of the truck, the cable gets lowered, it follows the terrain and angles down the slope to the front of the truck so it pulls the truck “UP” and back instead of “DOWN” and back. We tend to get stuck thinking that we have to pull from the nearest point of the vehicle, but in some instances, it makes sense to get connected to the other end, in this case, the front end.

@18:30 Now they accidentally put it into forward instead of reverse....... Oops. (Big smile)..... Hey, I was wondering why the people did not dig out the top of the slope a bit, to ease the winch tension when the truck neared the top. Prohibited or environmentally unsound? Something else? I have had a tow much like this and we did that before starting.

Nice rescue! Perhaps could have initial pull at ~~30 degrees, shovel sand to reduce acuity of the hump. I would have concerns about frame damage to the Ram with the straight over-the-hump pull. When the truck starts going over the hump, the heavier front end has a very long lever arm and stresses the frame severely. Greetings from the Great White North - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The angle of the truck to the cruiser makes the winch pull the truck down into the sand not up on top of it. Positioning the cruiser with its nose hanging off more would have helped lift it up out of the sand more, no?

To all those remarking about "WHY" would anyone put themselves in this situation.
It's more common than one may think.
When approaching a dune at a low angle, the other side, which is much steeper, is not visible until you are on the other side of the crest.
This spot is particularly treacherous as the land on the other side of the waterbody has a raised terrain, which is visible much before you reach the crest. This causes the driver to falsely assume that there is no waterbody on the otherside. Low lighting may further increase the risk as the water isn't visible until it's too late.
This spot has several instances of cars being stuck in this position. To prevent this reflective road markers have been positioned leading to crest. You can spot them in the video. However, this too doesn't suffice.
The desert is a deceptive place, even for those with experience.
I've seen several well experienced people do something seemingly stupid, until I was confronted with a similar situation.
The desert has no place for complacency.
Heading to the desert can be a humbling and learning experience provided one is up for it.

Once you had the truck at the top of the hill you should have run the winch cable under the truck to a front axel that way you wouldn't be pulling the truck into the sand as the back is upright also keep away from them cables well done.

There's a few current model Land Rovers around. They're very expensive here. They don't get involved in recoveries for some reason. I'm not sure the unibody construction would be up to it. There's a few series 3's they're treated as collectables, very rarely see them about. I used to have three series 3's when I lived in the UK, wish I still had them.

We never use cable. We use synthetic Rope. It doesn't stretch and has little mass, therefore stores very little energy. Have snapped a few.
