Lol my husband is Mexican, when we first started dating I was shocked at how hard and long he’d work everyday and then come not tired at all! He gets up at 4:00 am and gets back as late as 10 pm , most days he gets back at 7:00 and then he wants to go out and he NEVER COMPLAINS! He’s never once complained about working he loves to work! He owns his own business putting rebarb in high rise buildings. So he isn’t sitting behind a desk. Yeah I cuffed him real quick!!

Yeah, I understand completely. I was born in Chula Vista and even though I didn't grow up there, I grew up in a border town and I knew not to go into the park whenever I was notified and could also read the "writings on the wall" to understand what was going on. Living in a border town means lots of drug trafficking and gangs but I never actually saw any of that but at one point I had a bodyguard with me when I attended middle school and I could sense people watching out for me because I never caused trouble so nobody bothered me. My dad was also born in sinaloa, where the drug cartel and el chapo was born but that's a different story altogether that has shaped the person I was growing up. But regardless, I plan on making the move to downtown L.A. in the near future because it is the most affordable place in California you can have but regardless, I am grateful for this video because if you don't have California blood running through you and understand how things work in the hoods and all that, you could get into a lot of trouble. I know how to navigate California and sense where I'm supposed to go and not go. It's basically all about respect. Gangs are basically tight knit people trying to survive and taking care of their families. You don't question anything that they're doing and mind your own business. You are responsible for yourself and only yourself. If you do eventually end up going to the wrong neighborhood accidentally, a gang member will politely tell you that you are in the wrong place and leave and you should do it fast with quiet, no questions asked. If you hesitate or start asking questions, you could or not get killed, depending on who you're talking to. It's a very easy concept to understand. Just follow the rules of the hood and there won't be any problems. If you start something, rest assured, you won't be the one finishing it.
The guy who is doing the tour is really nice to listen to. IDK why, I think its his voice and mannerisms. He is so calm and knows what he is talking about. Its nice to hear him recall so many fond memories of his childhood.

I think the world is taking notice of the the Chicano culture, especially in L.A. with more movies coming out there is more of an audience for it. This documentary showed more and answered so many of my questions than anything else that I watched... ever. Great job on this project!

Students demanded better education, civil rights, and mostly the decease of racism. If I recall correctly. I was a baby. But I remember my sisters. @K Will true....but that doesn't change my point. compared to the east coast, the whole of California has Mexican history.....obviously there are differences, just like there are between Orlando Puerto Ricans and New York Puerto Ricans, or Orlando Puerto Ricans and Miami Cubans, but they're all Carribean latinos just like in California theyre all Mexican. you probably see all the differences because you are used to all the Mexicans being the dominant latino group, but on the East Coast Mexicans are few and far between compared to Puerto Ricans/Dominicans/Cubans
Always great learning more about Boyle Heights. My grandfather moved here from Mexico in 1910. The Italians were here also at one time. Lan Franco street is named after a famous Italian American also and gangster Mickey Cohen grew up in boyle heights too. Look into the neighborhood connection with the olympic auditorium because in the 1930s and 40s boyle heights had a lot of fighters boxing out of it. Thanks for this video and I look forward to more.

My parents were Mexican Immigrants so they were never involved and when my dad would get asked on the streets where he was from he’d always say I’m just a Mexican and they would leave him alone but I do remember the time gun shots were fired and they landed inside of my house right next to where my dad was sleeping 😪 luckily nobody in our house got hit

I grew up in New Orleans and live in Texas. I've never been to Cali or heard of Boyle Heights (although I've heard of Ramona Gardens before somewhere) and really didn't have an pre-existing reason to watch this (let alone finish it) but he attentiveness to the things that happened around him and manner of delivery is what kept me around. Some people are just trying to survive and navigate this crazy world and just end up in rough spots but can still get by without letting anger/aggression/fear consume them.
I was born into Pico Gardens Projects for low income families mainly all Mexicanos in the early 90’s until they told us we had to move because they knocked them down and were rebuilt into modern society. This video gave me the chills and showed me my childhood playgrounds 2018 style.

We played a show I believe right across the street from Mariachi plaza at a Quince hall, i had no idea how historic it was, I legit remember unloading gear from that spot and hearing the mariachis playing hella loud at 3am I loved that so much!

@T A - you wouldn't understand but Mexican/Americans would hardly given the right to higher education so the walkouts began in several schools. Students demanded better education, civil rights, and mostly the decease of racism. If I recall correctly. I was a baby. But I remember my sisters. My parents being scared for their participation and mind you we are white. We saw no color just friends of different shades.

As an east-coast Mexican-American, this is very interesting. I've always wanted to live in CA because the deep chicano roots.
@K Will true....but that doesn't change my point. compared to the east coast, the whole of California has Mexican history.....obviously there are differences, just like there are between Orlando Puerto Ricans and New York Puerto Ricans, or Orlando Puerto Ricans and Miami Cubans, but they're all Carribean latinos just like in California theyre all Mexican. you probably see all the differences because you are used to all the Mexicans being the dominant latino group, but on the East Coast Mexicans are few and far between compared to Puerto Ricans/Dominicans/Cubans

Always great learning more about Boyle Heights. My grandfather moved here from Mexico in 1910. The Italians were here also at one time. Lan Franco street is named after a famous Italian American also and gangster Mickey Cohen grew up in boyle heights too. Look into the neighborhood connection with the olympic auditorium because in the 1930s and 40s boyle heights had a lot of fighters boxing out of it. Thanks for this video and I look forward to more.

Billy The Kid I was born and raised in southern Cali all over LA and SB county now I’m a truck driver and deliver all over Texas and Houston is a big city but it’s no where near as big as SoCal hood wise
I agree South Houston, more of the South East (Greater East End/Third Ward/Fifth Ward) pretty ghetto , but I think South West Houston ( Sharps Town/ China Town / Belleair) is the worst part of Houston.

My man. I was born and raised on the East Coast in Boston and live in Houston now. I'm not Hispanic, but if you live long enough you'll realize theres real n%%%as everywhere. I've been to Cali..my wife is Mexican and raised in L.A. Real recognize real, never sleep on someone elses hood. People work and survive the best way they can wherever it is.

I grew up in Boyle Heights and my grandma lived in Romona Gardens. I also went to school in Romona Gardens. I crossed the bridge everyday walking to school. I felt almost as if we shared the same experiences, places, sights, sounds. You showed what is to me, Home. Thank you for this great doc. I'll be watching more. 💗

My parents were Mexican Immigrants so they were never involved and when my dad would get asked on the streets where he was from he’d always say I’m just a Mexican and they would leave him alone but I do remember the time gun shots were fired and they landed inside of my house right next to where my dad was sleeping 😪 luckily nobody in our house got hit

I moved to NorCal a year ago. I share your sentiment. I miss east LA sometimes.
I grew up in New Orleans and live in Texas. I've never been to Cali or heard of Boyle Heights (although I've heard of Ramona Gardens before somewhere) and really didn't have an pre-existing reason to watch this (let alone finish it) but he attentiveness to the things that happened around him and manner of delivery is what kept me around. Some people are just trying to survive and navigate this crazy world and just end up in rough spots but can still get by without letting anger/aggression/fear consume them.
This gentleman did a great job showing his neighborhood. He is very knowledgeable and respectful. Great video. Much respect from Denver CO.
I was born into Pico Gardens Projects for low income families mainly all Mexicanos in the early 90’s until they told us we had to move because they knocked them down and were rebuilt into modern society. This video gave me the chills and showed me my childhood playgrounds 2018 style.

We played a show I believe right across the street from Mariachi plaza at a Quince hall, i had no idea how historic it was, I legit remember unloading gear from that spot and hearing the mariachis playing hella loud at 3am I loved that so much!
Everything was on point, I grew up there , I lived on soto st , directly across from the kfc in the background, Cincinnati st runs directly into my house, the other end of Cincinnati is VBC aka Variety Boys Club, loved this doc...
