Thanks for sharing bro as a 49-year-old arab American Muslim I love all my brown people and this video solidifies the love we have for each other as a community regardless of what side of the track you grew upon !!!!!
This is so true. I was hitting up Steve in 84/85. I was there every other Saturday to get my vinyls and mixtapes. Tony A I bought like 5 of your tapes. You did one with PE playing backwards. So dope!
Growing up in Compton/Inglewood area in the 80s and 90s I was familiar with a lot of things shown here. Brought back a lot of great memories. Also, facts are facts and no lies were stated here. Great stuff
At 13 years old, I got my very FIRST job at the Rodium Swap Meet, working for a guy who used to sell plants, flowers, and flower pots! Big Ups to the ones who put this HISTORICAL video together! …STRAIGHT🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🤣🎶 Driving on the right side stretching his leg to the pedal. Thanks for the stories Tony A. Much love and I miss your Rodium mix tapes. Wish we could get a 2023 version😉👌🏾
Wow, small world. I was born at Kaiser in nearby Harbor City. I grew up in Wilmas 80-89 and lived on Ronan Ave, closer to Wilmington Jr. High. I went to Gulf Ave and attended tough ass Wilmington Jr High. Those Physical Education Instructors were no joke (Matsutani) but it later prepared me both mentally and physically for Marine Corp Boot Camp. My family would eat at Los 3 Cochinitos all the while my dad's Impala tires would get rotated at nearby Eddie's Tire Shop. Moreover, we would also visit the Gardena Swap Meet and the Alpine Village swap meet. Thanks for the quick History on Wilmas.
Personally for me, the Roadium swapmeet was the bomb back in tha day…i went back there a few months ago for the first time in over 40 years and the items for sale were literally not the same anymore but the memories I got from being a 10 year old mocoso are priceless
Lol dam I remember Angel he lived right behind Wilmington Junior High. Grow up on the ESW. Yes Banning High School 1992. It was crazy time but some fun times.
It was so organic back then,I'm glad I experienced hip hop from its beginning as a old school graffiti writer, I had no clue what I was doing would go global, amazing
Thanks for the ride back in time Dj Tony A That's my old stomping grounds too. Roadeum, Broad Ave Elem, Wilmington Jr High, Banning. One thing you could have mentioned who contributed to the culture was Michael Chambers~ Boogaloo Shrimp. I'm just saying Wilmington / Carson rich in culture.
God damn it this video was right by house! Glad you finally came to Wilmington! Went to broad avenue, wms and banning! Tbh I feel like you could’ve found more people to interview in this community. Know a few people that probably would’ve gave you really good stories about back in the day who were affiliated but turned their lives around. Which was most likely why you don’t see a bunch of gang members standing around in the hood usually
Coming from Carson taking the bus to Long Beach going thru Wilmington was scary in the 80’s 😂 especially in the day time because you couldn’t hide. 😂😂 great tour . 🔥
Wow - excellent video !! The Wizard seems like a good guy, and I really enjoyed the history of Wilmington from his time of the 80s/90s. BTW - he is spot on correct that Banning High School was GREAT in sports back in the 70s/80s. A lot of D1 college scholarship athletes came out of Banning. Many of them made it to the pros. One guy who comes to mind is running back Stanley Wilson, who played college ball at OU (Sooners) and played in the NFL for the Bengals. He was a great player whose NFL career was cut short by severe drug problems.
I grew up on frigate in Wilmington in the 80s. I remember going to the Roadium to buy the NWA EP. I still have it today. We made our own BMX track in the area in-between the college and the park, great memories. Cove Bowl was the jam too!
I was locked up with TATU from Eastside Wilmas in the FEDs. Heard alot about Wilmas and how crazy it was in the 90s. TATU is a solid vato my respects to him
I'm an 80's Crenshaw District kid and he's right about Banning having some great football teams back then. They were always in the news for winning and having a few great, and I mean great, players.
I don’t miss LA, but I do have love for where I came from. I used to live in Gulf St. on W C St. Wilmington. My father and my cousins were all involved and I guess thats how I lost them to the gang game so thankfully I don’t live there anymore and I’m in college now. I still wondered how it would’ve been if I stayed but anyways gotta keep moving forward. Love the video and love the stories. Much love Raza 🇲🇽❤️
DJ Tony A, real OG in the game. I use to buy his mixtapes from the Compton indoor. He's been representing the Harbor Area for a long time. S/O the homies from Wilmas. East and West. It's a H.A. thing. - Port of Los Angeles
I live just off Broad st. I was a casual longy in the '80's and '90's eating burritos at Isaacs Cafe. And I worked at the Paramount SwapMeet as a teen. It's cool hearing you talk about my home town.
Good video, in late 80’s early 90’s brings me memories of when we used to visit the West side Wilmas at will-hall park then would cross town to visit the East side Wilmas on “L” street and then we would drive couple blocks to Hyatt street…it’s a trip how all 3 of those neighborhoods didn’t get along but they had one thing in common, they got supplies from the same Mexican people from Sinaloa… if you was getting your party supplies from dudes from Wilmas it was from Sinaloa.
I was in County Jail in Maricopa County Phoenix Arizona with this dude from Wilmington I don't remember his name but he had lil brothers twins name Dodger 1 and 2... this dude was beast... . being there was so many people like myself from California in the pod me and him always kept a line of communication open I hope he's doing all right
I'm from South Central right off of Florence and Hoover. During the Days of the Riots I worked at Pentel in the City Of Torrance. The Riots Never Hit that way towards the Harbor Area. When they ran out of Gas in South Central I filled up my Gas Tank and road to the Hood and distributed the gas amongst the homies so they could drive out to the Harbor Area and Fille up so they could go about they every Day business they just had to go fill up and shop in the Harbor Area or East L.A/Montebello Area.
