- A historic day for FLL, representing the exponential growth that this "smaller" airport has undergone! It was certainly a slap in the face for some Miami spotters when Emirates announced their daily service from Dubai to Ft. Lauderdale. According to Wikipedia, "the airline decided to choose FLL because of its codeshare with jetBlue."
Enjoy the view of this heavy Triple Seven arriving during the less-common West Operations at FLL! It was very rare to see this aircraft land on the smaller south runway. The UAE 777 is now the largest widebody aircraft we receive regularly!

Getting this video was definitely one of our most challenging experiences... The airport was initially in West Operations, when suddenly traffic started flowing the opposite direction. The Horizon members decided to change plans. We left one spot and went over to a different spot to catch Emirates arriving in East Ops. Soon after we got there, the airport switched back to West Operations. We sped all the way across the airport to the parking garage. And as we set up on the north side of the garage for Emirates arriving on 28R, the aircraft was cleared to land on the south side (28L). A mass stampede ensued as dozens of photographers sprinted across the garage to finally catch the historic arrival on the south runway.

Plan on seeing the arrival of British Airways when the LGW-FLL service starts on 07/06/17.

Man, I was hoping I could make the drive down there to see the inaugural myself, but I didn't get the time. Luckily you did, and the video is awesome! From Tampa and Orlando, congrats to you guys on scoring the "big one." Up here in central Florida, last year, we were just as surprised as you were, but knew it wouldn't be long before you guys get it too. Admittedly, I wasn't expecting FLL, but I fully support it, as this will finally open the door for FLL to be true International gateway, especially with BA coming soon! But luckily, we only have to wait a few more hours for the excitement of seeing a 777 takeoff from a 9000ft runway :)
This is definitely huge for FLL! The airport is proving itself as an upcoming international gateway with all these heavies. Hopefully we'll see more airlines starting service here and offering an alternative to crowded MIA down south!

Im so behind in the news. I didnt even know that Emirates decided to actually go ahead with this route . Didnt they have a gripe about the runways at FLL being too short for non stop service to Dubai?
The aircraft certainly ate up the runway during the first takeoff. 10L is only 9,000 feet, hopefully runway length won't be an issue later on..
Flight was full back to Dubai and we had room for more. The flight times was short however due to the jet streams going back. Let's see what the summer brings. The B77L is a BEAST!!! Great machine
If Emirates can handle a 7,641 ft. runway from Newcastle, it certainly can handle a 9,000 ft. runway from FLL
The flight from here is 4,000 miles longer though...
The 77L really is just a shortened 77W
