Security guard is a low paying, extremely dangerous job, with low hours. He has no skills, and is an ex con, so nobody in manufacturing or retail would want to hire him. That's why he's a security guard.

Often, we see people who have murderous or criminal tendencies behave normally when placed in controlled environments, like working on a ship. However, as soon as they return to a life where structure, control, and the maintenance of moral and societal norms are their own responsibility they cannot maintain any sense of control or normalcy. It is heartbreaking that these souls were lost because one man could not control his frustration.
Thank you BC for another wonderful narration. I especially enjoyed the historical information about the canal at the intro.

Inmates who have had long prison sentences will often become distressed when their release date is near. Many express their desire to remain in prison. Some will reoffend purposely so that they can return to prison. My sister was a prison guard in a maximum security prison and saw that happen many times, for the reason that you state.

The psychiatrist that examined this man years ago predicted that Silvano Brown would kill again, but he still was released from prison. May the souls of these young women that he murdered rest in eternal peace.🌹 Great investigating, presentation, historical facts about the Panama Canal, and photos, too.

It's sad how common it is, but I'm always dubious when a murderer throws "she made fun of my peepee" into their stories about why they murdered a woman. Like that is a valid excuse for murderous rage, even if she did* do it, which I doubt they often do. Most of the time, I think they're just projecting their inadequacies on someone.

This guy had no real empathy for others. I know "he had good school reports up to the age of nine"; but I think he really had a personality disorder that simply went undiagnosed. Up to pre teens, a certain amount of selfishness goes unnoticed because they're "kids". I think his personality didn't change because his parents separated, I think he just WAS that way. Sadly, without any serious therapy that would have taken years, he really SHOULD have remained in prison.

That is bad that even the psychiatrist foresaw that he would kill again, and advised that they should keep him incarcerated. They didn't listen to the psychiatrist, so they were fully responsible for any subsequent crimes that he committed. Working as a security guard after conviction of 3 murders?!?!!?? That doesn't sound very smart, for whoever hired him.

You know that Scottish people really dont care about rank and title? A man's a man for all that, were all Jock Tamsons bairns etc. Being a Scottish laird isnt seen as a positive thing by native Scots.
Ye see yon birkie ca'd a lord,
    Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that;
Tho' hundreds worship at his word,
    He's but a coof for a' that.

Divorce does seem to be a tragic turning point for some kids. I have noticed that a lot of killers and anti-social people’s dark paths started at a divorce. I also believe it matters how the divorce is executed, the amicable way or the Betty Broderick way. However that’s no excuse for destructive and or criminal behavior.
Also, as a vet, I’m appalled at the amount of prolific killers that were in the military!

I don't think this story is that unusual. There probably have been a number of Silvano Ward Browns in the past fitting this same mold and doing the same thing he did. I have no sympathy for anyone who has the potential and knows what he can do about making his life a success yet does nothing except resorting to doing the worst thing possible. His circumstances weren't so predestined that he couldn't have done better for himself. He kept giving up too soon, becoming a burden to society when it didn't have to be that way.

Took a cruise through the Panama Canal shortly after the third lane was opened. What an amazing feat of construction through difficult terrain and hostile environment. Was told by the guide that approximately 100 people died per mile during the initial construction. Saw the island prison located in the middle of the artificial lake created by the canal where the strangler was staying. Very primitive construction but ideal location to prevent prison escapes. Col. Noriega was still alive then and was being held there. Beautiful natural country there with abundant wildlife. The canal crossing lasted 12 hours, enjoyed watching every minute of it. Prostitutes just kinda take for granted that a man in his age group got enough experience and doesn't need extra accommodations. So, no sympathy for what he did, I just get why he'd just shut off when it's time to perform. You get stage fright with the ladies, it takes time and a really patient lady to help you get over it.

This person was an absolute loser in a system that gave light punishments. They knew all about him after his last trial and yet turned him loose, knowing that people like thatdon't change. To make him a security guard is laughable. Better that his name and face should be erased from history. We have had plenty of these, and societies never learn from them, so what's the point?

The "correctional facilities" make these criminals. Once they make a mistake as a very young person they are shooed off to these places that DO NOT help them become a better person but rather mistreat them and give them access to far worse people. Their education there is mostly in what other inmates teach them.

I wonder if, and really doubt that both women made fun of him. Seems more likely that he just got enraged when he couldn't perform.

Yeah, I call BS on his justifications for killing these women. It's classic victim blaming, "She made me do it" nonsense. I expect that the only way he could get his kicks was the violence itself. I think he sought the women out for this premeditated violence, rather than it being reactive to a perceived slight. They need to keep some people locked up.

Very interesting this video to see photos of the beginning construction of the Panama Canal and listen to some of it's origins. My maternal grandparents traveled through this place in 1919. Very sad that a young man Silvano Ward; would turn into a criminal and have so much disregard for life. He committed the crime, did the time and wouldn't you know it; went on to work as a Security Guard. Looking at the automobiles I said "wow my mom's first car". Thank you BC you have a wonderful week as well as your faithful listeners.
