    Oh this is so sad. She seemed like a genuinely kind and lovely young lady. It’s terrible that her killer got away with this. Why did no one suspect Mr Greenwood’s friend? The one who “found” the letter…. If only what was believed about the eyes reflecting the last thing she saw, were true. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Thank you for sharing this one BC.

    This is such a sad case. It was extremely brave of Mrs Greenwood to go downstairs like that. What an awful shock, especially as she seemed fond of Mary Jane. I would like to know how much money the pair of suspects had on them at the time they were stopped in Plymouth, and the cost of their fare to Australia if it had already been paid. It seems just possible to me that one or both were paid for the deed. Mr Greenwood's business partner would be of interest to me. He knew one of the men, that the parcel of land mentioned was owned by Mr Greenwood, and it was he that found that dodgy letter and handed it to Mary Jane. Perhaps he had been giving her unwanted attention, or he believed she had overheard something unfavourable? There are many reasons, and many other willing but rejected suitors. As for the weapon, a man's walking stick, so fashionable at that time, with a heavy metal top, may easily have been sufficient. No one would have thought twice of a man carry one, and the darkness would hide any blood stains on the clothing. It is so sad that the case was never solved, especially for Mr Greenwood, and Mary Jane's family. Fabulous and compelling work as always Brief Case! 🙂

      I was wondering about Mr Greenwood's business partner too. Such a sad case..

    • @con.troller4183
      @con.troller4183 2 года назад +29

      Yes, the partner, William Cooper, should have been closely examined. The suspect had very particular knowledge of the household and its habits. The contradiction in the letter (claiming ignorance of the address it was hand delivered to), and the fact that it was "discovered" in Cooper's presence, is very suspicious.
      I would suggest that the property was just a clumsy ruse to get Mr. Greenwood out of the house so the killer could be alone with Sarah Jane. She would likely not have admitted a casual visitor, especially not a young suitor, but might have welcomed Mr. Cooper without question. This would also explain why there was no initial commotion when the visitor came in. The struggle might have ensued after he made his unwelcome advances.

      @Anna Gettings, You are on point about the walking stick! I didn't think of that and neither did the police. That's why the weapon wasn't found...the murderer took it with him, you would be a great detective, right up there with Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downing, Jr. version😁)
      I was suspicious of the business partner too, the way he alluded to a letter from an admirer. A "respectable gentleman" would not have said something like that to the "hired help" back in Victorian Era.

    @TheKulu42 2 года назад +29

    I agree with some other commentators here that Mr. Cooper should have been questioned more closely. The fact the letter was "found" while he was there is suspicious, and there is that point when Mrs. Greenwood thought that she heard two people downstairs. Sarah quietly admitting Mr. Cooper, a man she knew, perhaps? He could have said that he was looking for Mr. Greenwood, and when told that he was out, Cooper said that he could wait for him. Perfectly innocent. Another commentator suggested that a walking stick, common in that era, was the murder weapon. A lot of those sticks were designed to be weapons as well as fashion statements.

    I suspect the business partner of Mr Greenwood would have used Sarah Jane as a "pawn". I think with the maid dead and the wife ill (would soon die and she did) Mr Greenwood would sell his home and piece of land and move away sad and distraught man, never suspecting who killed the maid. You always have to beware of "business partners". Poor innocent girl she let her murderer in the house never had a chance. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Have a good week BC and friends.

    This is a heartbreaking case! Poor Sarah, she seemed such a lovely young woman with so much ahead of her. Mrs. Greenwood was undoubtedly very fond of her to brave the stairs and possible intruders. She’s a victim as well to the sots responsible. Mr. Greenwood must have been beside himself to have left them and lost them in such succession. His business partner needed to be looked at much more thoroughly, but then again perhaps the police didn’t know the full details of Sarah discovering the letter to begin with. God knows who committed this wretched crime and has handed out his judgement. Cheers BC, for keeping them in our memories and showing such respect to them. When you said the surgeon just cradled her in his arms, I realized how hard and helpless and frustrating it must have been to be a doctor back then, being able to do so little to help a lot of people. At this point in time, medicine had already come so far throughout history, but still so far behind now. Makes me happy to be alive now. I just turned 40yrs old, even just 150yrs ago, I'd be nearing the end of my life! It seems like a lot of doctors in the past could only provide comfort care a lot of the time, sad. Be choosy on sponsorship. It just doesn't carry that ring of truth. Love your channel, but the ads do not encourage history and facts. I can get fantasy anywhere, but real channels are hard to find, that advertise like minded stuff. Just a personal opinion. Others will disagree.

    The lady of the house facing her fear by going down stairs, then she and the neighbor lady, unarmed, refusing to abandon Mary Jane without checking on her, and then the lady of the house staying alone with Mary Jane while the neighbor lady went for help...❤ They had no way to know whether or not someone was there in the house still. They were very brave and compassionate. Mary must have been a very special girl to inspire such bravery and loyalty after only working there for a year 🥺

    Whatabout the man who 'pointed out the letter' to her!?? Mr. 'Connor', or something like that. Seems all too suss that he pointed it out, upon arrival and 'assumed' it was for her, rather than her employers, whose house it was.. and was nothing but a set-up to make sure she would be there, without the home owner/her employer/the 'man of the house', who someone definitely wanted to not be there so they could do what the did, etc. HOW was he not ever a suspect!????? Did I miss it or did you not say, Briefy whether the Greenwoods had children? I can imagine someone who was confident of benefiting from the couple's death, seeing the close relationship they had with Sarah Jane and getting worried the will would be changed for her benefit.
    Presumably if a cousin or nephew stood to inherit, they would be at least an occasional visitor, explaining why Sarah Jane admitted them to the house.
    ETA. She was only nineteen. To have risen to the job of housekeeper that young she'd have to be very competent as well as possessing the 'people skills' she undoubtedly did. The local people taking up a collection for a headstone shows how much she was liked.
    Also, that's very young for so many men to be wanting to marry her - everyone from milk men to business partners. She must have been a knockout! Poor young girl. To be robbed of so much future joy and life at only eighteen.

    Mr. Greenwood's instinctive mistrust of the letter was clearly justified, and I have to say that it has all the hallmarks of the kind of email scams and spammers that we've all learned to "ignore" since. In any case, this was a DEVIOUS crime, plainly premeditated and aimed at Sarah Jane, and it screams "rejected suitor" all over. Indeed, the fact of the missing/destroyed letters suggests that there may have been someone she was specifically afraid of, and trying to discourage or avoid.
    I would furthermore add that I'm not completely convinced that Mr. Cooper, Greenwood's partner, is an obvious suspect simply because he found the letter. Not only must he have been investigated first (including checking his handwriting), but if the two men from Plymouth, whom he knew, had anything to do with it, they might have known how to place a letter where he would find it, precisely because of the acquaintance.

      Rejection can turn a person crazy,same as jealousy.At a place I worked there was a (definitely)unstable bloke who tried to hit on a girl who was in a relationship.He just wouldn't take no for an answer.Unfortunatly,she had never met a kook like that b4 & was too kind to tell him to go jump.When a friend of her's visited,this nut case actually threatened him with a bow & arrow!I enjoyed the job,but met some total weirdos there.

    This is so so sad, all around. Mrs. Greenwood doing her best to make it downstairs to Sarah, shouting murder to try and draw attention brought tears to my eyes. And then the murderer(s) was never caught. If only Mr. Greenwood had trusted his gut, and stayed home that. Rest in peace to Sarah, and Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood.

    • @rosemarywoodhouse4832
      @rosemarywoodhouse4832 9 месяцев назад

      I find that part odd...that the wife called out murder! while the murderer could still be in the house. How did she know what exactly was going on and why would she draw attention to herself and put herself in harms way when she had issues walking (would not be able to escape the criminals). She was the one who convinced the husband to go meet the note author when he didn't really want to go. I wonder if the husband was flirting with Sarah or if she felt threatened in some way by her. She did want to stay home all the time with the couple, and not go out with people her age. OR maybe the husband set it up because he wanted to get away and start a new life?
      How it is that the wife heard light footsteps (similar to a female's) but not any voices?

    I hope your ok BC. You sound as of you are getting a cold. I do hope it's only allergies and not something more. Thank you for this case. It is very kind to the families to remember this. I honestly think it was his business partner. He most likely knew of the property in such detail. I think he was leaving the letter and almost got caught. I think he may have wanted to be with Mary Jane. She must have refused him more than once. It doesn't make sense that he would kill her for not wanting him. She must have turned him down a number of times. He may have wanted to get closer to his partner to get his hands on some more money. Maybe he was da oing something in the business and didn't want to be caught. Maybe Mary Jane knew of something. It is funny that the so called letters she received were never found. Maybe she did throw them away or burned them. So many what it's and could halves. It is too bad that it will remain unsolved. Thank you again for another great BC. I had to rewatch it today because I kept falling asleep listening to it...lol. your voice is so soothing.
