As someone who started playing genshin during 1.5, this video feels exactly like learning about old family drama you weren’t told about until way later. It’s top tier silly goofy genshin drama, just under the 1st anniversary rewards movement.

I was there when it was written. The 5 stages of grief I had when I realized I paid money for Zhongli was such a trip that I would never forget. And the euphoria about the buffs? Truly a wild ride.

Zhongli is the character you use when you're burnt out and want to get your resin/dailies done with as little effort as possible.
Ganyu does that job faster from a distance with non neglible damage

That's only amongst the casual players though. The theorycrafting community consensus is that he's still incredibly mediocre.
Basically theyre saying, if youre struggling to beat the timers in the abyss, Zhong li will NOT help you. Putting him in a team reduces your overall DPS (yes even if it allows you to hit more).
If youre a whale and you dont mind doing less DPS, ZL just makes the game more comfortable to play.

Sometimes I think to myself "yeah, probably I minmaxed my chars enough to get on their own. Bye bye John Lee, let other characters play too". Aaaaand they instantly get owned by... not even enemies, but even natural debuffs (fireplaces and so on) accumulating over time. So yeah, once you get Zhongli you cannot play without him :D

It was back when genshin is still fresh. I doubt they will give any other character this special treatment now as the game has formed a dedicated fanbase and is making tons of money (looking at dehya)
It just so happens that he's an Archon. They are expected to be OP. If Furina turns out to be horrible gameplay-wise, the uproar will be as big if not bigger than Zhongli

This brings back so much memories since it was the patch when I started. Literally few days before the 1.2 livestream and missed the codes too. I got Razor c4 off Zhongli's banner and he carried me so much but now he is benched.

As someone who pulled for Zhongli on the first day of his banner in 1.1, I can tell you how many people kept telling me I should’ve gone for Tartaglia instead. Zhongligate was REAL.
I was one of the few that pulled on his initial release because he was swagger incarnate. I didn't care if he's bad, cuz' he's swag. Now he's good and swag, and that's a major league W in my book.

I was one of the people who fought for his buff. I was glad that I was able to partake the fight against scummy practice from Mihoyo. If he remained the same as he was before, imagine how he would be the most neglected support in the current roster we have right now.
Ok but the AI Zhongli singing in the beginning made me start laughing so hard I started crying.
I was a clueless day 1 player who wasn't in the community at the time. I got him at the last minute of his banner and was so happy. I wish I could go back to those blissful times.

God I saved up since I downloaded the game (like, 2 weeks after the game released) for Zhongli and when I tell you I screamed my lungs out when I got him 😭 seeings all that went down was insane for me as a ZL stan I was desperate in wanting to defend him but even I could say, he was very lack lustre before the buff

@@frostyvoid827 Bro he was worse as a support than as a DPS back then. Geo shields didn't get any bonus DMG reduction against non geo attacks, his shield was legit paper and you lost DPS just casting it.
Barbara could at least use Thrilling tales to give you some atk buff.
He generated 0 energy at C0 because you could never get to his pillar without wasting even more time to do both E and hold E in one rotation.
There wasn't any interrupt resist on the hold E so you just got yeeted out of the animation if you ever had your shield broken and had to recast in combat.
Release Zhongli is maybe worse then Dehya.

They said I was a fool in coop games for my c1 zhongli, but in the end, only I, had the shield to keep xiao alive.
Another history fact about pre-buff zhongli is that his auto attack multipliers were lower than Xianglin’s one lmao

Zhongli incident 1.1 was such a litmus test for the entire playerbase and especially CC's. So many people who were thought to be reliable and trustworthy showed their true colors back then. Especially a certain ex genshin YTber with a name that rhymes with shamone slim.

Zhongli was my first 5* (AR 35). It's been 2 years and I never removed him from my team. I feel a lot of regret because of that, like now I depend so much in his shield that when I kick him out of the party, I end up dying 20 times, emptying the poor statue of the seven (or having a break in the middle of the fight to give them more food than the food Nikocado can eat In one video).

I pulled for him last year when I first started playing and my god I gotta say, as a mobile player who’s skills are okay and who’s frame rate drops below my math grades, he saved my life. Even now as a much better player, for squishy characters who can go down in a single hit in abyss, he’s still wonderful. I also have a weird physical dps build I use sometimes for fun and honestly? It’s genuinely pretty good lol. He’s the reason I started playing and I’m just happy he’s viable -as well as being incredibly sexy-
Laugh all you'd like, this was a VERY important battle that we won against MHY's greed. This essentially guaranteed that most units had a good use case and weren't left to be super weak and garbage. The only break from this, truly, was Dehya. I believe her absolute abysmal sales compared to others has also reinforced this concept for future units.
MHY was absolutely testing the waters to see what they could get away with, and fortunately, this allowed for ALL archon units to be strong. This is the reason Raiden, Nahida, and certainly Focalors will be or are strong units.
Xinyan unfortunately came before Zhongli and his need for buffs so she is forgotten but just imagine if the "Zhongli Wars" weren't fought...you'd be seeing a LOT more "Xinyan like" units.
Xinyan can still be built as a Phys Bruiser and some of her passives reflect that (e.g. her C4 lets her Skill swing shred Phys RES by 15% for 12secs). Applying Superconduct is tricky because Xinyan herself is Pyro and thus you need 2 extra slots instead of just one (see Eula), but it's not a huge deal. She's also one of the few characters that actually meshes well with their "best friend" for even more utility (Yun Jin in this case).
She won't be putting out Eula or Itto numbers, but it does the job well enough. Dehya doesn't even have that luxury since she has the worst NA multipliers of all the berserkers (including Dori and Sayu).
Sure, but they made a PYRO unit focus on PHYSICAL damage lol. Clearly there was little quality control going on in the early days. The Zhongli Fiasco forced them to think carefully on how units are designed and used in teams vs. the "random bullshit go" approach that early Geo units, Xinyan, and others had. For example, giving diona, a healer and shielder, CRYO damage for her ascension. Or giving Jean Healing Bonus for her ascension even though her healing was based on her attack value, not even giving her crit or Anemo damage or attack or anything useful. That's what I was trying to say. @@SageRuffin
