I have seen Natalie Merchant perform live twice--once in Saratoga, CA and another time at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. Natalie was gracious, composed, gifted, and generous on both occasions. At the Davies Hall performance, she sang so many songs from her 10,0000 maniacs days. SHE WAS AMAZING!!! This past week, I listened to several of her songs and the experience of listening to My Skin, Wonder, and These Are The Days still brings me to an emotional place that I can only describe as getting close to what love means. I will always be grateful to her for the experiences.
I'm a black woman searching out Natalie Merchant songs and performances on RUclips. I just came across this video and just said what are the chances that 2 black women will be up there as fans. I love Natalie Merchant. She very organic, holistic, and calming even in her upbeat songs.
I know how she feels about being onstage vs. one on one and that somehow it is easier to be onstage. I have also have been moved by experiences that at times are so overwhelmingly emotional it is impossible to talk about them without crying. She is an artist that is very special to me and to many.
When i had seen their Trouble Me video back in 1989 in Lima Peru, i became a fan of 10000 maniacs. I agree with other commentaries that her time with the band was brighter in many ways than her solo career. I hope they reunite for the joy it would mean to everyone. Maybe a neutral city in South America could be the guest.
Some in the comments are trashing Katie.. I’m indifferent to her, but I think she did a fair/decent job at facilitating the interview with the questions here. And of course, Natalie Merchant is an exceptional songwriter!
What I admire most is that she breathes life into a completely braindead show and pulls off some gracious answers to generic questions that just make me squirm.
I love her solo work but always feel her collab with 10kM was the tops. The bands uplifting, 'happy' music gave a great contrast to her weighty lyrics and voice. Her solo work is dark, beautiful but dark.
I’ve always thought she was a poet who adapted her words into music lol. She’s a brilliant storyteller. I wish she would direct or write a film - her “Ophelia” storyline is brilliant
When I was 16 years old all I listened to was hard core rap…I considered other genres weird considering I grew up in the ghetto. Then I heard her voice. It ruined music for me forever. It was like hearing an angel hymn from heaven. She raised the bar so high.
Such a Huge difference between the Deep waters of Natalie's spirit that one could swim in forever, and the shallow puddle of Katie's that would scarcely get the ankles wet!
Natalies kindness and generosity song was in my memory for a while than finally found who sang it don't know why Katie didn't ask better questions and seemed a bit cold
iant sorry - I agree, she was not warm at all. I don’t think she could relate to Natalie. Then when she asked Natalie... how did you adjust? Natalie said I’ve been doing this for 30 years....Katie acknowledged that but right there was the awkward moment.
How was she not warm? I don’t see any coldness at all here. She giggled and smiled a lot and seemed energetic, gave Natalie a nice hug, said “so nice to have you Natalie!” Called Natalie extraordinarily talented.... Seemed generally enthusiastic about having her as a guest. What specifically are you seeing in the interview that is “cold” because I don’t see anything. Perhaps some mild awkwardness in the interview, but no coldness.
Maybe that’s why it’s no longer on the air. Besides, Ms. Couric is now busy promoting her new book, relating her fond memories of Larry King, Prince Harry and Deborah Norville.
Damn Nat, has it been that long. I know we all age, but why is she dragging me along with her, I'm not that old c'mon Indian Love Bride, lady Clairol will do WONDERS no pun intended...I'm Kensington Drake!
Why? Why should she or women for that matter dye their hair if it’s grey, or silver or white? Women age, men age and I think we need to accept who we are and what we look like at very stage and cycle of our life. Change your paradigm. We can age gracefully and still look beautiful. It takes confidence and to not be afraid of what others think or their criticisms. 😘
When I saw the seemingly perpetually youthful and tanned George Hamilton with grey hair, I think we’re all destined to look like Methuselah or Chloe Kardashian.
Wow I came off the high of Natalie's beautiful words of empathy for others and finding her voice through art. Then, half choked up (because she got there) I eagerly looked down to see the comments of others who saw what I just saw... to be greeted with the immortal words "Katie loves the blacks". Thanks for that. Let's not let one moment of vision and tenderness be uncontested by superficiality and random weirdness.
Sad part we are like same age..geeez natalie the whole. l am over 50 i am just going to let myself go Look is freaking 😥.. Still got voice but girl buy a bottle of revolon.lol
Natalie is so humble, sincere, simple, genuine. NOT superficial at all. I wish more people were like her! 😇

Such a beautiful soul and spirit. The World is a better place with Natalie .

Just imagine if the whole world was filled with more Natalie Merchants what a beautiful place this would be.
She's a braindead liberal. The world would be going down the toilet. Which it is.
Her songs are pretty timeless. Hard to believe its been 25+ years ago. She'll always be young in my ear.
I just saw shes going on tour

Love her stories, love her music, love her humanity.
Kudos to Katie for recognizing this American treasure.
Class…no ego…no flash…no attitude…no T&A…pure talent and love of her art…
I always like listening to her music whenever I need to escape from life and hearing that voice and music keeps me at peace
All time favorite. Beautiful and talented.
Natalie wrote our anthem and she gets chocked up. That is why....pure.

A true talent. Not all caught up in being a celebrity. Love Natalie ❤
Oh how music has changed... There's no poets like Natalie anymore.

She’s an inspiration
Soooo underrated love love her
I loooooove Natalie Merchant!
More albums please!
DAMN I LOVE HER, I GREW UP ON HER MUSIC..AND ALSO R.E.M. AS WELL.
That was awesome! Congrats to the two winners, Aracelis and Melanie, of the tickets to the Natalie Merchant concert.
Im so in love with Natalie.
Natalie, a true 90s Goddess- so amazing
A true artist in every sense of the word. Peace.
wonderful wonderful interview !
Natalie Merchant turns us big, strong, "Manly," men into wailing, weeping, blithering idiots!😭
(and I love EVERY minute of it!)
Haha awesome comment.
So down to earth 💗🎶
What I admire most is that she breathes life into a completely braindead show and pulls off some gracious answers to generic questions that just make me squirm.
Agree. That just shows her depth and width of humanity.
I remember when this aired like it was YESTERDAY.
My absolute favorite. I listen to her daily.
I love her solo work but always feel her collab with 10kM was the tops. The bands uplifting, 'happy' music gave a great contrast to her weighty lyrics and voice. Her solo work is dark, beautiful but dark.
I agree with you. The work with 10,000 was pop music with a message. The solo work I didn't feel in the same way as I did with the band.
@@anthonymejia2549 Steve Gustafson, their bass player said the same thing in a comment to me here some years back...but he might be a bit biased.
She's still gorgeous... Inside and out. Love her.
I had no idea Katie Kuric had her own television show. Bizarre!
How bizarre how bizarre!
First radio interview I heard of Natalie she spoke so well I thought she was from England
I’ve always thought she was a poet who adapted her words into music lol. She’s a brilliant storyteller. I wish she would direct or write a film - her “Ophelia” storyline is brilliant
Natalie Merchant is a sweetheart. ❤
Wish more of us could act more like her 🙏
Natalie's just bad Ass ! I'm a rocker but when I heard her she rocked my 🌎 she very . very smart. She writes about real Shit. She a damn genuous
Beautiful soul 🙏🏿

What was the first song of hers that caught your attention
The Queen of Modern Americana; and such a lovely human.
Such a beautiful person
best one!
What a Beautiful & Classy Woman.
I was|am a huge 10000 fan but just never got into her solo work. Great lady though.
Such a Huge difference between the Deep waters of Natalie's spirit that one could swim in forever, and the shallow puddle of Katie's that would scarcely get the ankles wet!
Eryll Flynn hahaha well said
I'm so torn because its a very sad comment you made there Eryll while at the same time is spot on and can't deny it.

It sounds like Natalie has some European accent.
Upstate NY accent.
Affected
Worst interview questions. Ever.
Literally the same questions every interviewer ever asks her:
You were really shy when you started.
Why did you breakup the band...
zzzzzzzzzzzz
katie cackcle
She really hasn’t aged all that well. That being said. She is a beautiful person.
She is aging very well and looks beautiful. Your just uncomfortable with her grey hair
@@kabernat agreed. What matters most is her beautiful soul INSIDE.
Natalie, oh Natalie.. Thank you.
What an #Empath she is I'm an Empath too
No such thing, get over yourself.
Dima b -I understand what your saying and your connecting with her.
#Empath❤️
I love Natalie please contact me !!!!
I like Natalie and her music very much but Katie's show is pathetic.

You can see the difference between the supid kouric and the very inteligent genius Natalie....
Given a couple of minutes conversation, it's possible to see the differences in any two people. But why must everything be a competition?
@@blackmore4 Yes, blackmore. A compliment that is in the form of an insult to someone else is not a great compliment.
Sooo tacky when these talk shows do this instead of just getting right into the interview.

Maybe she's happy with her hair. I saw her around this time at The Beacon Theatre in NYC....she sounded amazing.
