Every time someone talks about people being hollowed out by sequels, I just wave towards "Last Action Hero" which predicted this decades ago.
Amazing video! Me and my Mom (who has seen every Die Hard movie in theaters) loved it.

Mikey, this was a tremendous episode!
Your points about sequels stagnating a character's growth are bang on. It's hard watching a character you love essentially relive their first outing ad infinitum and never get to experience the normalcy they fight so hard for. The marriage falls apart, the loved one dies, the hero spirals into depression, etc. Sometimes it works, but for the most part I find the wishing for a sequel to be sweeter than actually getting one.

I have a tiny fragment of hope, based solely on an actor grabbing more control over his character's direction and a short teaser, that Thor: Love and Thunder miiiiiiiight break this mold

It's not just movie sequels, either - it is an issue that plagues many TV shows, especially stuff like superhero shows (looking at you, Flash). As you mention, there are ways that can work (it is somewhat realistic for people to slip back into past problems even after learning not to), but far too often it's done poorly because that undoing of the change is only there to ensure it's the "character we know and love".

Watching this, knowing how Bruce Willis winds up in life, gives me the most melancholic feelings about Die Hard and how the character of John McClane never truly develops throughout the series as a character. It's both sad and comforting at the same time, to know that McClane - unfortunately unlike Willis - will never change.
Bruce Willis and his family, I feel, should take at least some solace in that.

As a 90s baby, I grew up with Die Hard and I absolutely love it but I want to talk about the most groundbreaking, earth-shattering thing about the whole thing for me: Theo, the tech guy.
I'm a Black nerd who was surrounded by other Black nerds and in the 90s, all we had was Dwayne Wayne and Urkel, neither of whom I really connected with (Especially as a cis-woman). Theo was the first time I saw a Black Nerd and just LOVED him. Theo isn't the punching bag or pathetic or an outsider among Hans' crew. He's just the best?? Like, Theo is cool and he doesn't feel like a mindless henchman. He talks back to Hans and they quip together. He's amazing!!! That's the thing I'm most thankful to Die Hard.

The funny thing about the "what if George Bailey never found redemption" thing is that it basically mirrors many of James Stewart's later darker characters. Most of them have a backstory that boils down to "former idealist got screwed and became hard-edged." If George Bailey hadn't been redeemed, he'd have turned into a Stewart western antihero.
(Also, 9:15 is my favorite argument for why Die Hard is a Christmas movie: it has a Christmas miracle.)

This becomes more apparent once you compare it to the others who don’t have the same pacing. In fact every move done in the first movie seems to have been executed to perfection. It’s for this reason why I think the first one is the best in the series.

McTiernan and on-set writers figuring out how to solve narrative and tone problems made two of the great movies of the 80's. I mean... if there's a formula we should exploit, isn't it THAT? Start with 3/4s of a script, let McTiernan direct for 8 weeks, and then throw Shane Black on set for another month of shooting and reshoots. I bet we could get two more classics, minimum! Step 3: PROFIT.

The sad thing for me is that Die Hard 2 had John and Holly happily married again. They were clearly working on it, John had moved to where Holly worked and was supportive of her career. As much as everyone says DHWAV was better, it literally made John a worse person. He went from being a guy who learned a Christmas lesson to an absolute a-hole that didn't deserve anything good. The sequels after that made him slightly better as a person, but not by much.
*Edit:* Also, I find DH2 interesting because the villains are, for once, not "disillusioned leftists" but right-wingers. The main villain is basically Colonel Oliver North.

A character where you actually SEE the stepping back again during sequels is unfortunately MCUs Thor AFTER Thor 3, where he actually got an engaging character arc:
    - Looses eye BUT gets self awareness and likelyness to Odin > gets another eye and falls into depression, completely loosing his growth after the third film.
    - Looses hammer AND gets full control over his power > gets an axe and relies completely on it afterwards.
    - Looses hair (No! Not my hair!) AND grows as a person and character, solving the problem via developing a plan > grows hair again and avoids all responsibility for his people (as Dad Bod Thor and even after Endgame), becoming a brute again who relies on his bodily strength.
    - Looses Asgard as a place AND learns that the people constitute Asgard > looses most of his people to settle on a fisher village called New Asgard.
After Thor 3, his a visually changed man who takes his repsonibility as king for his people seriously.
During Infinity War and Endgame, he´s a flatter character than he was during Thor 1. Except his dad bod, which stands out.

    • @AmmaThor

TBF though, spiraling into depression after failing to stop the antagonist that already killed half of his people and watching half of THOSE survivors die as a direct result of that failure (not to mention the whole half of the universe to boot) seems a pretty understandable arc. I've seen this base used as the arguement for the impact of him successfully calling the hammer when he goes back into the past. I thought it a pretty good take on PTSD and i've seen a couple of soldiers express that relatability.
After we see where Thor progressed to we really feel the impact of his depression and root for him all the more in the next fight with Thanos. With the trailer for the next one recently released it looks like we are going to get to see him recover and discover who he is outside of the role of Royalty

I feel as though I've mostly ever seen character growth from movie sequels in animation. DreamWorks did great in creating new adventures that continue to evolve their characters with Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon (and even Shrek, to a lesser extent). The Steven Universe movie, as well as the sequel series Steven Universe Future, are imo excellent examples of continued character growth and world complexity as well. One could say it's because in most of these cases the protagonists are kids growing up, but even comparing them to live action film franchises with child/teen protagonists, the animated stuff is better at creating real, complex growth.
I'm not totally sure why this might be, but I find it fascinating. Weirdly, the one example that comes to mind of live action character growth through sequels are the Marvel movies. So maybe it has to do with creating worlds big enough to hold complexity, with opportunities for both big and small stories?
In some cases you start the character on small problems, working their way up from sequel to sequel to bigger things and chipping away at their insecurities and family problems until they become the confident heroes they were meant to be. Other times starting big, with world-ending stakes; then slowly moving smaller and smaller, where the problems are more and more personal, until the protagonist has had time to reflect on and come to terms with their flaws. This variety gives a screenwriter the chance to give their leads different kinds of problems to tackle, of varying degrees, that test characters on things we haven't seen them go through before.
Not sure why this feels almost exclusive to animation in practice. Could just be what I watch? I honestly hope more live action stuff learns from cartoons.

Every time I see a new Mikey video my heart warms up and have to go watch it. Seriously, the vast majority of channels are all about negativity and less on analysis so the fact that your essays are primarily about wholesomeness and analysis, I am here for it

A couple corrections and additions (yeah, I'm THAT nerd).
Joel Silver didn't see Rickman in London, Rickman was performing in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" with the RSC on Broadway in NYC (and even nominated for a Tony award), which is where Joel saw him. He referred Rickman to Jackie Burch who had scouted him for a role in "Red Heat" with Schwarzenegger but realized he wasn't right for that movie. They auditioned Rickman for DH in his dressing room by having him doing a cold read of the script on camera and cast him almost immediately but he was very reluctant at first. He didn't want his first film to be an action movie and he was quite hurt when he was passed over for the film of "Dangerous Liaisons". Also, when the Fox executives saw the first dailies of Rickman's performance (his first scenes shot were him cowering in front of Bruce as "Bill Clay") they wanted to REPLACE him! But Joel and McTiernan went to bat for him and told the Fox execs to calm down and trust them.
And McTiernan wasn't the one who instructed that he be dropped before he was ready, that was the stunt coordinator Charlie Picerni (whose son doubled Rickman in the longshot). And that was the first take where Charlie told his assistant to let him go early but Rickman's tie flew up in his face as he fell so they said "Shot's spoiled, let's do it again". Rickman said they did 3 or 4 takes of it and they ended up using that first surprised take anyways. Rickman didn't have a fear of heights (he did have back problems and was afraid that being suspended from the harness for a long period was going to exacerbate his back pains) and the drop was 40 feet. The stunt guys later complimented Rickman for being game for that because even the most seasoned professional stunt people don't like to fall backward and not see where they're landing. It's also dangerous because if you don't spread out your arms and legs as you're falling you'll turn and land on your head. If he didn't want to do it they were going to film a stunt man falling facedown. A close friend of mine is co-writing a book about Bruce Willis's films and I'm a huge Rickman fan (obviously) so I helped with some in-depth research about the first film.

DH2 is a weird film in the franchise because the other sequels don't acknowledge it at all. It's like the timeline depending on your preference is DH1 and DH2 OR DH1 and DH3. And the last 2 are questionable in their own ways.

The missed opportunity with Die Hard 2 is they tried to make it a Christmas movie instead of a Thanksgiving Day movie. It takes place in an airport. Why not make it about the busiest travel day of the year.
This would have made the franchise about surviving the holidays instead of "John McClain can't die". We could've had a Die Hard every month.
Die Hard 3 would have the tagline "a new year to Die Hard" and complete the End of Year Trilogy.
Die Hard 4 would spawn a new batch of memes comparing Bruce Willis to Bill Pullman every July.
The whole thing would culminate into a two part finale that starts on Mother's Day and ends with Father's Day.

Tbf, Crocodile Dundee II is a really fun ride. Just take all the heartfelt fish out of water sincerity and replace it with Dundee basically pulling shit on par with Special Forces because ...Australia, I guess? It peaks somewhere around the scene where he talks some tough street kids into helping him storm a drug kingpins mansion & then doing that thing in the most 80s "consequences of our recklessness?? *Pfft* You and your wacky ideas!" kind of way. It was one of my favorite movies growing up, which was why when the late stage sequal Crocodile Dundee III came out I begged my parents to see it... Ever seen an Eddie Murphy kids movie? (its forgettable more than painful -I think, I don't actually remember the plot! but it also may just have not had one?)

It’s not a Christmas movie because the movie could have taken place on New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day or some time with John having a believable reason to visit his wife in Los Angeles.
The movie barely focuses on Christmas instead on German terrorists that would enjoy the cash on a beach in a other country after a successful heist of vast cash, and John struggling being in an unfamiliar situation.
Christmas Vacation, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Santa Claus, Jingle All The Way and multiple other Christmas movies wouldn’t have a story if it’s not set during the Christmas season.

I maintain that Die Hard 5 fails because it does not escalate the threat level over the previous installment. Die Hard: building. Die Hard 2: Essentially the airspace above DC. Die Hard With a Vengeance: A whole city. Live Free or Die Hard: A whole country. Die Hard 5 should have threatened the whole world and Die Hard 6 is The Fifth Element.
