  • In January of 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to spend twelve days in Japan, a country I’d been dying to visit ever since I was a kid. I packed as many activities into each day as I could, including visits to attractions, cultural and religious locations, and of course, lots of food tours! Come along with me and join me on my Japanese adventure!
Follow Frank from 5 AM Ramen on Instagram: / 5amramen
A few hours after my amazing Japanese buffet breakfast, I met up with my new friend Frank from 5 AM Ramen, a local ramen expert who took me around Tokyo to eat some of the city’s best and most diverse ramen!
My Film Making Kit ► kit.com/davidsbeenhere
The first stop on our epic ramen tour was a spot off the beaten path that’s frequented almost exclusively by locals, so I knew the ramen there would be killer! Inside, you place your order through a vending machine. After you place your order, you get a ticket from the machine, which you take to the woman at the counter, and the cook starts cooking your meal.
I ordered a spicy ramen with chicken, egg, chicken meatballs, lettuce, seaweed, and onions in a creamy broth, while Frank got a plain ramen with broth on the side. The food looked so incredible and I couldn’t wait to chow down!
The flavors were insane! It was nothing like ramen in the U.S. The spice in it snuck up on me a bit, and the egg was outstanding. I’d never had a ramen like this one before. It was unique and flavorful, and almost like a creamy pasta. Wrapping the seaweed around some of the noodles was almost like having a combination of ramen and sushi. I couldn’t get enough of this dish!
While we ate, Frank showed me how he likes to eat his ramen. He has a good slurping technique!
The broth had the perfect amount of heat, and when all the ramen was gone, I spooned up a few mouthfuls of its tasty, rich goodness. The best ramen I’ve ever eaten in my life!
To get to our second ramen stop, we took a ride on the surprisingly organized, yet complicated, metro to the Shinjuku area. We had some time to kill, so we visited a convenience store and bought some sake for 250 Yen, or roughly $2.26 U.S., which we tried in a nearby park! It was really strong!
Our second ramen place, Gotsubo, is famous for its fusion ramens. I was excited to try them! Like the last place, you order through a vending machine and get a ticket, which you exchange for your food. This place only has five seats, so you might have to wait, but it’s worth it!
I ordered a massive bowl of soy sauce-based ramen with eggs with a nice, runny yolk, Iberian pork, seaweed, and onions in a thinner broth made from oysters and soybeans, which I had with a Coedo craft beer. The oyster aroma was heavenly, and the pungent flavor paired nicely with the soy. The noodles were thinner than the first place, but still thick, and the Iberian pork was fatty and really top notch! It’s the best pork in the world. They even gave me a giant spoon to finish off the broth!
Frank ordered a lighter, salt-based ramen with an oyster- and soybean-based broth with some rich, fatty Iberian pork. He likes to sip the broth before digging in!
Our final stop was a place in the Ikebukuro area that makes Indian-style fusion ramen! Beforehand, I got a strong, cold Boss coffee from a vending machine to wake myself up.
The cooks at this spot made sure to properly research Indian cuisine and use authentic Indian spices to create a proper blend of Indian and Japanese flavors, and it shows! My ramen contained pork and stir-fried bean sprouts in a dense, spicy broth containing garlic, mustard seeds, and Kashmiri chilies! This dish was beautiful!
It was so spicy in terms of heat, but also contained tons of flavorful spices as well. The broth was almost like a curry, and was very potent, but delicious. This ramen’s noodles were the thinnest of the three I had. Frank’s ramen was butter chicken-inspired, with cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. I tried a bit and loved it, but I was too full from all the ramen!
What a stellar food tour! If you liked this video of my incredible ramen tour in Tokyo, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment, and subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already, and I will see you in the next travel food adventure!

    • @Pammellam

David picks up too many noodles at one go. You want to try and pick up the amount you can eat in one go or one mouth full. And, yeah, don’t bite the noodles in half and don’t let them drop back like that....
About the slurping, I don’t really think it is to show your appreciation. I think it’s just a way of getting the noodles into your mouth without having to bite them in half. You pick up a small amount that you can eat and want to go and slurp them up into your mouth. Slurping is polite.
But David does a good job for a first try and I do really appreciate being able to see all the different foods he tries!

Come on now! Here’s s tip, if any of you are gonna eat ramen and slurp. Get a few strands at a time and then slurp. Don’t fill your mouth with noodles and expect to be able to slurp it in. You gotta have space in your mouth for the air to go in.

I had plain old instant ramen just before watching this - made me realize how crappy my meal just was.

    すすれたら おいしさがもっとわかるのに・・・。すすると、匂いが鼻から入って口の中の美味さと重なって2倍美味しくなるのです。
