    I know it sounds awful but can you not put a hobble on Flossies back legs to stop her kicking the calf away, just for a short while when the calf needs feeding. It may speed things up a bit for Flossie to accept her.

    • @theJustinRhodesShow
      @theJustinRhodesShow  3 года назад +64

      It's a possibility, but with hobbles you run the risk of them only behaving when they are in them. Plus, I've had a cow fall while wearing hobbles and it wasn't pretty.

    1. Let Flossie go "too long" daily, till she's actually uncomfortable.
    2. Just stick to the stanchion for now.
    3. Separate Flossie and the calf nights. Or days. Or whatever works for you.
    4. Right now the calf is a "pest." It's "not hers" and it's forever going for her udder. But Flossie is USED to calf-sharing, she's USED to being put in the stanchion to be milked, and she's USED to having no access to the calf at night--and vice versa. And you've trained her to stand and be milked already. Put that to use. By giving her no "pest" in the night, and fat, full, painful udder that needs to be stripped, and the familiar setting of the stanchion, the calf is safe, Flossie's not feeling badgered, and you can adapt your own half-share of the milking to conform to the calf's need. Even if Flossie is never willing to put up with the calf out of the stanchion, the calf eats, the cow's got the advantage of a milking calf, and you've got your milk.
    It's worth it. Look, you're getting a good genetics heifer calf and the advantages of half-share even if you do have to put up with the stanchion ritual.

    Hi Justin. The key with Flossie may be put her in the stanchion before giving her pellets instead of in the paddock. If she kicks calf stop behavior by hobbling back legs or tying one hind leg up. The calf is less aggressive with attempts to nurse because she knows the cow is going to hurt her when she tries. It may take going out 3 to 4 times a day, put cow in stanchion, give pellets, if she kicks at calf hobble, and nurse calf to finally get cow to give in. She most likely will not try to kick with hobbles or 1 hind leg tied up and if she does most likely be one time only. Kicking cows are dangerous cows and can badly injure and or kill humans. Be careful!!

    I feel like you need to back off on milking her, flossy needs to get a little uncomfortable so that when the calf goes to nurse she gets some relief. Also, I wouldn't feed the alfalfa outside the stanchion; maybe feeding her outside in the paddock is teaching her that she doesn't need to go into it.

I’m remembering how she kicked when you were washing them days ago and she’s still been sporadically uncompliant with your milking as well as the calf nursing. Just a thought... but I realize I.know nothing about it really. (My thought was also inspired by your comment that Flossie wanted the calf to come with her yet won’t let it nurse...)

    I have no clue what I am talking about. Will it help Flossy, if you talk to her/tell her to let the calf get some milk. The guy was saying that Flossy knows that you are her master. Can you not treat her as if she is a dog and take control of Flossy-pet her, stroke her, to calm her down-let her know everything is ok? I think animals understand us more than we know. I can see that Flossy acts better, when it is just you, her, and the calf - and you speak to her/try to persuade her to comply. If she still will not comply, I would tell her firmly/forcefully to allow that calf to get some milk. Take control, my man, take control.

  • @perforatedpaperplane

    You might ask the lab if they have destroyed the carcass of the dead calf yet. Usually its best to drape the calf in the hide of the deceased one. Maybe if they have had it on ice you could still use it. Or since she is fine with the calf nursing when she can't see it retro fitting a halter with some carriage blinders, or a blinder(blinker) hood might be am idea.

  • @barbarahuber1409
    @barbarahuber1409 3 года назад +12

    I'd put Flossie in the stanchion before giving her any alfalfa and I'd hobble her back legs so the calf can drink her full without being kicked. Sooner or later she'll get used to the calf. Because the more of her milk the calf drinks the more she'll smell like Flossie and the more Flossie will be inclined to accept her.

    You can't force an animal to adopt especially with such a wide window that has already passed. How old is this calf 10 days old maybe 11? That's a long Gap in between. That motherly gap of adoption for a lot of animals is within the first 24 hours the most critical. But all hope is not lost. You did get a very beautiful calf out of it and on top of that I think she is going to be probably your top friendliest cow!! I would just bottle feed her it doesn't take long. I think that's something the kids would really enjoy

    You know it can be a science have a look into the New Zealand dairy system all pasture and paddock based you can measure your grass in Basic ways to laser measure systems. The simplist method is using a pasture plate meter and then using certain calculations for the type of grass or mis you have wi give you the dry matter content which is what the whole system is based around. You can also map your grass growth so you know when you need to speed up the rotation or pull paddocks out to silage or make hay ect

    she is NOT going to adopt the calf - it's very clear. She can however trample and kill the calf if she is too irritated by it -
    Just bottle feed her - it may take twice a day to do so - but in the up and up - you'll end up with a real tame cow down the road and she may even be a better milder and easier to work with? The window of a surrogate mother for Flossy has closed. Sorry - but it was a bit too long to wait ....it's a learning curve but not a bad one necessarily - that calf can teach you alot now and in the days to follow

    Hi Justin, obviously I’m not living on your farm in your situation that being said, concerning Flossy... in any adoption I’ve had anything to do with, giving the mum more room/space the harder/worse it is for the baby.
    Forced companionship in smaller spaces seems to be more successful, not always though. 😬 So it might not pay to put that mumma and baby in a bigger paddock
    God bless you all, I hope that helps. There’s still hope. Praying for success!
