We have done this many times on our ranch. Hobbles would go a long way in helping stop flossy from kicking. We always try it in this order: 1 skin the dead calf and place it on the graft calf. Works 80-90% of the time. 2. Leave them in a small pen and bring a dog in. Dog kicks in the maternal instincts. 3 halter on the cow and tie her head to a post and one leg to a post for a day. Leta the calf suck and then we hobble the cow and leave them in a small pen for 3-5 days. One of those 3 methods has worked 100% of the time.
Justin, my dad raised cattle , and when a mother lost her baby , my dad would bring another calf and just put the mother urine on the baby and she would just take up the baby
I really appreciate you making consistant episodes, with all the chaos In the world and throughout the week you videos are a great way for me to unwind and destress. Thank you
Important to let that calf eat first, before milking. Flossy will do the math. She'll begin to feel the relief in her bag when the calf nurses. She'll begin to welcome it. That's your best chance for being able to get her to let her nurse outside the milking stanch.
One of the hard things about teaching was repeating the same lesson for five different classes and yet keep it fresh and energetic. It taxes your acting abilities to the max.
I was so nervous for today’s video and I’m even more nervous about tomorrow’s... I’m sure adoptions happen a lot but it’s different when your watching it. The bits that you guys give us are amazing... thanks so much.
So exciting!!! 'Pippi" means 'persistent' - maybe she needs to wear that name with pride! Praying that all continues to go well! Aunt Flossie - you are a wonderful mama!
Keep after that calf and cow. I know you're very busy but the more time that you personally can spend with the cows and the cow together getting them used to each other and used to you being around the more you get comfortable with each other
I know about people that it actually took longer than three days and that's cutting it really close for the Cavs just don't give up and keep spending time with them like it's a normal thing and it it'll work we're praying for you
Seeing Aunt Flossie getting better with the calf makes me smile. I can agree with Rebecca on honey baked hams. The worst are those spiral cut hams. I'd rather kiss an Emu. Lol.
Bekahs face at the honey glaced ham story reminds me of people who dont like veggies. Because all they ever got was the overcooked boiled to mash stuff. There are more ways to cook & season any food and Rebekah just remindet me that if we dont like something one way, try again another way. Rebekah is the best.
I’m so happy that the calf was still alive, hopefully Flossie will stop kicking her. Makes me happy to see this. When does a calf stop needing to nurse? Rebecca, I’m the same with ham.
I am so proud of you and your family. If she gets scours, just don't let her drink as much. Baby was hungry. I think It will work out. New things for Flossie and that baby almost as tuff as Flossie.
😢😢😢. How many times have I experienced such a failure after working so hard BUT tried again until it was perfect and you’ll do the same. Wish you’d ended video on a good note showing us Flossie letting calf nurse or that she was licking it to continue the bond. Fortunately that feisty little one keeps trying and in maybe a week she will win. You DEFINITELY got the perfect calf so give it Time. Flossie’s hormones will kick in and become the momma she’s meant to be. Even with our horses it was never easy but let nature do its thing though had a lot of bruises from the mare kicking. They still need to be separated from the others. But it will happen just be patient for awhile longer. I share your tears Rebekah and also the hate for that “artificial “ ham. Had it once after waiting in a long line only to get sick of the sweetness. We’ve shared a hog ever since and have smoked the ham. Thanks for keeping us close to Flossie and the calf. Which boy is manning the camera? Whoever is doing an awesome job especially with drone shots that are incredibly beautiful 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thankyou so much , this is a treat , this is real life , this is so nice to see you all and working to bring this heffer and cow to bring them together ., I just watch the one where you got the calf . So nice .thankyou .
Nice work on the new calf! I love your guys work! True American inspiration! We need more like you all! God bless you all! Please read the comment below lol
Although I personally may have renamed her burger. I'm in no way versed in jerseys. We just bought our first one 8 months ago. (Thanks to watching your family in the great videos you make) her name is daisy and she is 4 i belive. She calved the exact same day you lost yours. Ironic no?? She is a giant teddy bear. Absolutely zero aggression. Even with her new baby.
Love your chicken house! You are supposed to leave them in the stall for 3 days. That’s what the guy who sold the calf to you said. Remember❓❤️put them back in the stall. It’s working‼️yay🌺
Flossie was extremely stressed in the stall. I asked Josh if a small paddock in the field would work. But if you judge me on this, I'm certain to let you down some other time.
I remember seeing a documentary years ago where a rancher had a cow that lost a calf. He skinned the calf and tied the skin to another calf, to trick the mama who lost one. The narrator said once the mom could smell her own milk passing through the adopted calf, in about three days, the rancher could take the skin off.
The first video you put out when you adopted this new calf for Flossy.... my heart was Pitter pattering. I was so nervous for that calf. Even though Flossy is absolutely gorgeous and she is such a good Mama but you just never know how it's going to turn out and you always are afraid that she may hurt or kill the calf!! Either do it in the extension or simply bottle feed the calf because I think the reason that flossie may not adopt this calf right away is because several days passed in between. I think if you would have gotten the calf when it was within the first 24 hours that would have definitely been the best thing. Because you could have saved the placenta and the fluids and when you receive the calf you could have spread that all over the cakes butt, head and body... with her scent and her placenta but because a calf is a week old already it may be wearing off as far as the adoption process goes. There's still hope there's still a chance but the window of opportunity shrinks as the days go by. But even if she doesn't adopt her like you would hope... you still can force her to allow that calf to drink when she is an extension so she's going to have to be there anyway. She's a beautiful calf... She's going to make a good milking cow she's definitely super friendly which is a plus! y'all are doing a great job!
I really love your videos Justin(and family) you are such a nice family and sharing your lifestyle gives us all a nice break from these pandemic times. You are a big inspiration to many. I dream of my own farm and my own milk cow. Hand milking with my own kids. Love from Sweden to your whole family( cheering for the adoption process ) 🙌🏻
It's a lot of work, but it'll be worth it, I imagine, both emotionally and physically - it's nice to see a mother cow happy with a baby and it also means a lot less work in the long run, doesn't it? I hope you keep her!
I enjoyed this video ♡♡♡ But the thumbs up button isn't working. I hope and Pray Flossie will adopt the Beautiful Little calf♡♡♡ That little calf is a tough fighter!!! She will keep fighting ♡♡♡ Flossie will be her Mother♡♡♡ GOD BLESS EVERYONE ♡♡♡ KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!! We love y'all so very much ♡♡♡ Have The Most Amazing Blessed Evening ♡♡♡
FYI Needle point not crochet. One uses a needle the other a crochet hook. Crochet is more like knitting, cross stitch is a form of needlepoint. I'm no expert I made a crochet chain once when I was a little tyke many, many moons ago also dabbled in cross stitch
How much we say to you you still got to try it and how much you try you got to keep trying and still you work it out with it ( my 7 year old granddaughter talk texted this message to you. We are both Praying.
I couldn't hardly wait to see if she took her. I wanted to snoop on Instagram but resisted. Yay! This is awesome. Rebekah is so cute pregnant. Love- a SC friend
I do hope it ends well for cow and calf both. It's a lot of effort, a lot of your time, and possibly another milk cow or for-profit cow? Not sure what you guys would do with a female calf ultimately. I guess she'd either be future milk production or the means to purchase 2023 beef.

We had cows that it took a few days before they would let a calf nurse. Keep the faith brother; you're living my dream.

It takes real skill to crochet your embroidery! ;)
Just keep going! Flossy will eventually give it it take several days sometimes! It helps once the calf is pooping out her milk and not another cows
I was hoping those maternal instincts kicked in for both their sakes and yours. 🙂 Such a cute calf and I love the name Maple for her.😊
One of the hard things about teaching was repeating the same lesson for five different classes and yet keep it fresh and energetic. It taxes your acting abilities to the max.
I’m so happy the calf nursed!
Embroidrey, not crochet :) It is a lost art.
I was so nervous for today’s video and I’m even more nervous about tomorrow’s... I’m sure adoptions happen a lot but it’s different when your watching it. The bits that you guys give us are amazing... thanks so much.
Justin, bless your heart! That's a positive way to look at that... You got good practice on that video!
That makes me so happy to see Mable finally getting to milk oh gosh yall she is just the prettiest calf so tiny lol
Sending love to Flossy and Calf Cutie💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
It looks like she maybe slowly adjusting to the new baby calf ! This is so good! 😊👍💕💕💕
I saw on another channel that once Flossy’s milk cycles thru the calf she will start accepting it. Don’t know if it’s true but I sure hope so.
So exciting!!! 'Pippi" means 'persistent' - maybe she needs to wear that name with pride! Praying that all continues to go well! Aunt Flossie - you are a wonderful mama!

Dealing with problem calves is so stressful. I’m glad it’s turning around for you.
Seeing Aunt Flossie getting better with the calf makes me smile. I can agree with Rebecca on honey baked hams. The worst are those spiral cut hams. I'd rather kiss an Emu. Lol.
Mr. Brown running and climbing with no shoes. Reminds me of my youth.
You had a sheep limping at about 10:00.
Stay Strong Flossy!!

Work in progress, right? Glad that Flossie and the calf are working thru their bonding! It'll happen!
Yes!!! Way to go little one and Aunt Flossy!
Call her Faith! She has faith she will be this cows baby. 😉😁💜
Thanks so much for a calf update fix!!!!
I’m excited for the new baby for Aunt Flossie

Well done! It does pay to persevere! Praise God.
Hoping it all works out! Flossy seems to be at least tolerating the calf a little better.

you could sell a picture of that backdrop you made with the lights in the barn for ZOOM backgrounds. $$$$$ you're welcome
I think once she gets her milk cycling thru her body, mom will be abe to tell its her kid
I love the name Maple. My bloodhound is named Maple.
The Rhodes family has my utmost respect! What your trying to do is amazing! God bless you all 🙏🏻💖
How much we say to you you still got to try it and how much you try you got to keep trying and still you work it out with it ( my 7 year old granddaughter talk texted this message to you. We are both Praying.
Poor little calf 😢
Thank you for sharing. If the world be so crazy, I needed this. Just precious
Maple would be cute 😍
Wonderful to see thankyou ,respect from rainy U.K.
The kids aren't crocheting, they are embroidering. Guess you're not a crafter Justin.
Justin and Rebekah Rhodes please name the baby calf Grace for all the beautiful reasons 💗🍼💗she surely is a blessing 🍼
I couldn't hardly wait to see if she took her. I wanted to snoop on Instagram but resisted. Yay! This is awesome. Rebekah is so cute pregnant. Love- a SC friend
I think when Flossy has full milk bag, she would want relief. This is GREAT!!! Congrats!!
WOW, the Barn look great with those lights and you all clear up nice. Progress on baby Maple and Flossy, just distract her with yummy alfafa.LOL
Contact Kevin and Sarah from. Living tradition homestead. They got another calf.
Watching twice to get my fill of maple
Hopefully it works out either way
I was hoping you might say you would (might) keep her.
Flossie was calmer because snowball was present, haha
I'm like Becca I can't stand honey hams.. Lol Geart Job on the baby Calf
I do hope it ends well for cow and calf both. It's a lot of effort, a lot of your time, and possibly another milk cow or for-profit cow? Not sure what you guys would do with a female calf ultimately. I guess she'd either be future milk production or the means to purchase 2023 beef.
That's awesome 👌 good on you Flossie 👏 👍 take care family 👪 🙏🙏

Yes she will!
Hopefully they will be ok
Csnt wait to see if she did
Commenting for support.
That calf seems like a Cinnamon (name) to me.
Maple is a nice name.
We Saved the After birth .....Next time and place it over the calf to get The scent on it... the milk is unlikely, to bond the mother to the calf....
I be praying for you guys....
I am waiting for this video all day
Was checking your Instagram all day if there was any update ❤️
Love your channel
Oh, I hope having the calf relieve the .ilk pressure will convince her to adopt her.
Omg I love ham
What types of minerals do you use for your cows?
I'M🙏 🙏 🙏ING!❤
“Failure” often leads to even greater successes.
At 9:51 was one of the sheep limping?
Well, this is one way to add to your gene pool!
Please - - we LOVE what you do - - but - - background music WAY TOO LOUD - - - need CAPTIONS
Awesome video 😃👍
What about what Josh said and leave them together in the stall?
Yay, a new video. 1st comment (maybe)
I hope Aunt Flossie accepts the new baby. Fingers crossed.
Yeah
