It's always amusing when you find out how the little things you do sound so much more complicated when you find out a name for them. It's quite fun listening to a pro drummer describe something and you have no idea what they're one about, but when they play it you realise it's a beat or fill or trick you've been doing for a long time that you never thought of as interesting or difficult until described musically.
I've never understood this groove until now, kinda simple sticking but it gets tricky when the kick is added. Saw guys like Mangini and Gadd playing it and always loved it!
Gadd does something different though doesn't he? His groove that sounds like this is a paradiddle chop...though he does do something like this on 'that' fill in Chuck E's in Love.
thanx big "Dave"your a great inspiration towards my drum career??and posting video's like these!!makes me advance and prepares myself for future gigs=>ive been observing your drum videos every couple of wks....
I don't know if Rick Latham got this from Steve Gadd or vice versa but Gadd is definitely credited with making this one famous... check out Latham's book contemporary drumset technique both the 32nd and sextuplet version of this lick is written in there.
To hear STEVE GADD do this lick in 1980, search RUclips for "Paul Simon, Oh Marion"....and listen to the opening fill. Then, try to find a recording of anyone besides Gadd doing this lick before 1980.
OOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhh, its gadd.... gadd gadd gadd... he cant play that, its gadds... He should of credited gadd tho, all those new drummers are gonna be thinking he came up with that all on his own....... GAAAAAAADDDDDDDD all mighty!!!!!!!!!!!!
For all of the people bitching about him stealing a Gadd lick, Steve should acknowledge that he stole a portion of his best stuff from Philly, Max and Elvin.
This video seams pretty tossed together. At first he says it ends on LL then next he says RR demo at the slow speed. Then he starts changing the sticking pattern completely. Whatever. I can play doubles that fast so it just seams like an upbeat double stroke improve. Sounds cool either way.
that left hand is so effortless with the ghost notes I feel like puking

It's a 2 minute drum lesson guys, not a history lesson.
Just enjoy the breakdown.
his hand technique is just flawless. I wish I could play doubles that relaxed.

wow, i actually play doubles that way. i never knew there was an actually name for them.
thanks for playing slow first. gave me hope haha
sticking?
that giant 3 ninjas mask
basically a shuffle.
THAT wrist
LInear Gadd :)
Is he playing an extreme 5b here? looks like it.
Oh gadd
How do you do that so fast?!
When the kick does the double stroke, do you then skip the first stroke on the snare? It seems like it but maybe that's just because of the speed?
Sorry no, I meant the syncope when it's KS. You skip the extra snare beat then on the kick right?
what is the hi hat?
Gaddism!
hahaha dude is backed!
i am here because of stixx
You make it look WAY to easy
Sarcasm ?
Erlich Bachman is that you?
