The light this throws on the gap between John Doe and the pros is nuts. Phil is insanely fit. Clearly one of the fastest non-pros out there if he is pushing froomey off KOMs. Saying that, earlier today (Giro2021 stage one ITT), Remco did more power, for twice as long, in a TT position, while about 5/6kg lighter. Fully insane.
yeah thats crazy! not only that, but they need to casually do efforts like this in 4-6 hour races everyday for the next 3 weeks! Insane
I literally had to read this twice to make sure I understood the comparison correctly, elite athletes (cyclists especially) are freaks of nature with their capacities for physical exertion
All hail the 🐐
@@thevirtualeconomy 7 time Grand Tour winner or Phil?
@@robertcatuara5118 I'd take the grand tours, although Phil has a personality better designed for RUclips. Also, my 🐐 reference was in relation to the one and only Remco
Damn nice work! The only thing I can do 20+ seconds faster than Froome is make self deprecating RUclips comments!
It's crazy how the pros are in shape. Everyone thinks Chris Froome's career is over but to get him a KOM you need a full gaze Phil Gaimon with an ultra light bike. It would be sick to see a Simon Yates or Primoz Roglic just try the KOM
Well Phil did say he was very grateful for the bike racing calendar starting back up again last season as he wouldn't lose anymore KOM's as the pross would have to race. There are lost of segments that are so hard the top 5-20 are all held either by elite hillclimb riders or high level pros
But Phil is nothing more than a barely above average amateur. It's not for nothing he's 'retired'.
@@uituituituituituit big difference between barely above average amateurs and below average pros.
@@uituituituituituit Go watch the Cat 3s at road nationals. The guys who stand on that podium are barely above average amateurs. A below average world tour pro is still on a significantly higher plane.
@@uituituituituituit he might be mediocre when it comes to racing but Strava segments and hill climbs are a completely different discipline than racing.
I was laughing so hard. You raced against Froome but he never new he was racing against you.
that's how KOM's work
And the only reason you know that is because he was up front about it 🤷♂️
@@hutchy_4297 or until the cookie man finds out
@@matthewbooth4612 I'm laughing with him. Obviously your cup is half empty and you need to hate.
he will know by now: Froome will get a push notification from strava on his phone that a certain Phil Gaimon snatched his KOM.
To us mere mortals in absolute amazement of this effort. Chris Froome on the other hand, the champion he is probably says great job. And thinks no more of it.
Most likely he won’t even notice.
Chris was doing hill repeats , Phil did a one time effort. No comparison
and Chris did "intervalS" not one climb. Plus while he is gaining form, still far far off his old form. Love Froomey... welcome back and good luck to him
Froome: "For me it was Tuesday."
I'm glad folks put their bins out properly over there
I love these KOM attempts! Good job, Phil. You make it look so easy though.
my heart rate would spike to 200+ and I would blow up in 90 seconds
This kind of honest, objective self critique when comparing yourself to others is to be respected.
Ha ha. So generous of you to give Chris Froome the motivation to hit back! Now I'm looking forward to the next off season. But let's hope Froomey holds on to loftier ambitions too.
Froome clearly finished his interval before the end as you went from 2 seconds down to 12 seconds up.
Foomy got that e-mail and was like "GOD DAMNIT!" lol awesome job Phil.
Ahh. Nah.
It's the worst e-mail
To answer some of the questions, Froome did this climb as part of a big climbing block. He was an hour and a half into his ride at the 19 mile mark, so he too was pretty fresh and obviously going for it. He had a few other top 10 efforts during his ride, but this one was no doubt a measured and purposeful effort for Chris... So it wasn't just a regular stroll, and it wasn't at the end of his 97-mile, 14,462ft ride.
Good effort. FYI, a 360 cam like the Insta360 One X2 on the hood would be able to track you through the turns.
Yeah was thinking just that. A 360 camera would be a huge benefit since you can re-frame in post, and it has spectacular tracing capabilities. Would hlpe the production values a lot
When you start giggling as you lift up your bike, you know it's light.
I wonder what Froome’s time would be if he also drove there with different bikes to choose from targeting this specific segment only
Just what i was thinking, Froomys KOM was probably at the End of a 100km plus Training Ride.
@@MADTASS Apparently it was part of a century ride with 14k feet of climbing, so not such a comparison.
IMO, your high cadence climbing demos just how to do it! A thing of beauty!
Thx Phil. What an entertaining film clip. Love that!!! Sure we know that it's not comparable but enormously entertaining. More of these !👌👍👍👍
Great video. Thing is, Froome could probably do the same time after 3 weeks of racing and 140km on the day before the climb.
I feel like we need a @Chrisfroome reacts to KoM steal by the cookie man.
Great effort, so happy you are back on form.
There was a cookie food truck in my neighborhood today. Made me think of Phil
Hahaha humble brag there, you were racing Froome and he doesn't know he was racing you, brilliant!
THIRD PLACE. AIN"T BAD
In chris's defense, he had disc breaks and we all know that those are the devil...
Or disc brakes.
Ben... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤜🏽🤛🏽
Froome also achieved his KOM as part of a Century with 14,000 feet of climbing.
Now that comments was not meant to be a slam on Phil. I wish I had half Phil’s power. It’s a comment on how good Froome is even post injury and in the twilight of his career.
Study wheel dish....also...... Disc brakes give totally different performance in low spoke count wheels vs mtb where the technology is well tested and reliable. The spokes must tension before any braking occurs. Meaning a dished wheel gets significantly destabilized and the rim moves laterally. Add a hard tire at 90 psi and hard pavement , and high speed, and it genuinely impacts steering ....at high speed. Low spoke count disc wheels are mental illness. Chris froome is more knowledgeable than 99 percent of mechanics out there, and there's a reason he doesn't like them. They can rub, and they aren't as great as marketing suggests. Despite motors in bicycles, and doping, chris is a good guy for being honest about some parts of his equipment. It would be great if he educated us so well about electric motor race hubs.
Watching your KOM's really do kick me in the ass to embrace climbing more albeit at about 40% of your pace.
Love those Goodr VRGs!!!
He should have ridden the tangents with the added safety of a car behind him.
great video Phil thank you
Really puts things into perspective. Great job!
That face was priceless when you picked up the bike.
And it counted as his upper body work for the week.
@@oldanslo 👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣
Your a beast brother, Los Flores is a climb! I’m in Thousand Oaks and those climbs are no joke, lmk if you need some film assistance, I’m in the hood. Love your vids.
Nice! You crushed that hill mate.
You did a test hit on the climb...I would have been done after your test hit.
nice subtle clean tattoo at the start, y'knows it !
Great video!!! Great to see someone else going for KOMs😀 Loving the live feed on progress and data!!! #moreplease
😂Froome carries his own water bottles uphill.
Phil v. the Ghost of Chris. Cool. And congrats on your good ride, Phil. And maybe they woke up Chris in Europe with the bad news, like look, man, Phil just smoked you. But he had likely been told to enjoy Malibu and not trigger you. And I like your sunglasses, Phil, the space alien at the pool with the other cats look.
It would make my whole life for Phil to see me rip down a canyon road and give a "nod" of acceptance.
Alright! Phil is back!
Great effort Phil! How many reps of this hill did Froome do that day??
It's such a cliché comment, but this 192 lb, 271w FTP, mediocre 49 year old Cat 4 cross racer can't wrap my head around your power to weight ratio. It's astonishing.
Killer run. Awesome as usual.
...and holy hell that modern mega mansion at 6:30. KOMs amongst billionaires. 😆
Always an inspiration to others Phil, keep up the great work, don’t forget to eat a cookie
Just me, or did anyone else wonder why Phil doesnt use music on the video during the efforts?
I'm betting that Froome didn't even know he had that KOM. And for sure won't care that he "lost" it... Nevertheless, nice effort, Phil!
You’re a better weatherman than that guy on ABC Phil... 😆 🤜🏽🤛🏽
Living the dream, chapel! Are those glasses even aero?
A skin suit on a 5-minute climb with a 10% grade seems like overkill
Haha and the rest of it isn’t overkill?
U gotta get one of those fancy drones that follows u like ya KOM buddy Drake!!
Hey Phil, looks like you have more sponsors than even Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec! (the opening credits.)
Just curious, why isn’t there any traffic on these roads in the hills? Where is everybody?
The stud that we knew you were
Mutant wattages, great effort. i can do 400w for 2 min at 63kg, i will keep my job i guess...
heh, I can't do that for much longer and im 90kg!
@@sapinva oh so you're chris hoy circa 2008?
@@sapinva 1000w for 2 minute like you stated is more than chris hoy could do in his prime
good job!!!
I will use this great effort of yours to see how does an amateur compares to a pro by trying to hold 20km/h on a 10 Percent Climb (if i can do it for10 seconds ill be happy lol)
I really enjoys these vids though I’m not entirely sure why.
Ironic that the commercial at the beginning was Lance Armstrong pushing Amp Human!!!
I bought Phils Cookie Neck gaiters for inspiration.
Me too!! 😂
With those gears on that bike lol you could climb to the moon 🤣🤣
Amazing dude 🤘
I have the same helmet as Phil.., *that’s all I got...* Another nice film though, thanks Phil.
Whole time I yelling, “come on Phil, come
On Phil!!”
Frick yeah 🍪
I think you were putting out more wattage than the CT200H following you... :)
Haha hot hard
@@worstretirementever pretty sure if the climb was 1k longer you would have dropped it.... :)
Was the camera on the car tilted downwards, because that looks waaaay steeper.
Thanks...be safe.
4.20 hold it down!!
Dancing on the pedals to maintain the speed and momentum ~ had a little Billy Idol “dancin’ with myself” in mind... Nice KOM
Like those shades Phil - love how the lens goes all the way to the corners where the arms meet the front.
Speed suit means business!
How about a two up head-to-head KOM challenge?
We mortals need a gofundme to attract the gaimons of ourworldto our favorite local segments. Phil, could i interest you in bombing up the big climb at Clayton County Park in Nj on a gravel or xc bike?? You are awesome! It's South nj, the climb is 6% for 120ft. Best we can do! Some roots tho!!!
Was Phil intentionally keeping his HR at 173 or is this his max? Seems low.
Right bike choice 🤙
I think your power is reading high but I'm probably wrong
cadence lord in the house
Nice effort; however, CF wasn't racing during his interval training; perhaps he didn't go full gas.
I’d say Froome went full gas up the first half, and then slowed down. Phil went from 2s up to 12s and then 20s very quickly. Froome must have sat up.
@@GaryPigott That's also likely.
Let's say CF didn't know he was going to be raced against.
So sore today I could barely walk,,,,,so I rode my Bike !!!!!
You’re the cookie 🍪 monster that’s legit !
Great effort Phil.
Poking the Bear!
Good Morneve! Go get em Phil :)
nice.👍
“Rambla Atlantico I guess would be 3,000 miles that way” i’m on the floor dying of laughter.
Well the sun did burn the cloud back
Hope you didn't hurt poor Chris' feelings.
To know anything, you have to know what Froome’s HR was. Without that it’s meaningless. He doesn’t publicize it
35 the whole time I bet
@@worstretirementever 👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣
Phil, what brand of sunglasses is that? Thanks.
Goodr! $30
Those shades are costing you 8 watts !!!!
With all you respect, Chris Froome rode his regular bike without modifications.
Hi guys what cassete and front chain are you using for a climb like this?
easy with a dry climb, take a nice lap like Froome then try to do the kom
What cycling computer does Phil use to check if he’s up seconds on a segment ? Lol
Not that I’m a pro, or ex-pro, or anything. But you would be faster with better lines around those bends. You have a car blocking for you, use the whole lane. I hope you smash the Everesting record!
Using the whole lane puts you close to the centre line around left-hand bends, which puts you in danger from traffic coming the other way. And, at low speeds, there's very little to gain. The racing line in motor sport is primarily about grip: it straightens the curve out so the available grip can be used to go faster. A bike at 13mph isn't limited by grip, so any line can be used. The difference in distance is small: for every complete circle turned, reducing the radius by 1m will reduce the total distance travelled by 2pi = 6.3m, which saves about 1.1s at 13mph. So, assuming he turned a full circle of left-hand bends in total, moving to the centre line would have saved about 3s.
Froome had prob ridden 150 km before he got to it or something crazy lol.
Apparently, he was about 30km into an about-150km ride at that point.
Heart rate stable at 173?
I don't believe it
2018 Giro - Stage 19
No, that was a totally different mountain.
@@davidbenner6551 Yup. My point is strava Kom or not, that was one of the most incredible stage victories.
the deference between you and Chris froom, is that someone can come and take your Kom away, but you can never take away Chris grooms 4 tour DE France wins
I love these Froome fanboys coming in, acting like they totally don't care.
I assume this was just part of Froome's longer ride or was it a one off effort?
He was doing vo2 intervals
@@worstretirementever nice, good job man!
Who else barely road an hour this week, just ate a double chee, and is smoking weed watching this KOM? 🙋🏼♂️
Run what you brung bro, so Phill takes 2 🤣🤣👍🏻
