One of the reasons I love Ghost in the Shell so much, is because when I first encountered it, it was so fundamentally different to anything I had experienced before, It made me think, a LOT, just trying to figure out what was going on, and I love thinking. It feels great when I finally begin to understand something new.
Maniac3020 same here! Not nearly as intellectually evocative but still pretty awesome is the directors first film Angels Egg, which is free on RUclips I think
It happened to me right while seeing Akira for the first time this afternoon. I had to stop it halfway for an hour because it was overwhelming. The philosophical, ethical, and political questions whose answers we will be facing right now in this era of war, are very unsettling. More than ever, we must not give any right we have for granted.
This blew my mind both literally and figuratively. Nice job Wisecrack. "Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you" and "Clinging to our beliefs about what we are will only prevent us from becoming what we can be". These are some scary truths...
lmv92x I'll just refer you to 12:06 so maybe you get it. That's me after watching the video, is that literal enough for you? But since you clearly can't grasp the concept of exaggeration I'll assure you that I'm OK that my head didn't LITERARY explode but it pretty much felt like it. Is that better Mr. Fun-At-Parties?
"Who's the master and who's the slave?" That reminds me of something George Orwell once said he explained simply put that when a person becomes a tyrant they not only enslave others they also enslave themselves to the role and affectively limit themselves without even realizing it for in order to keep their oppressed subjects in line they can never appear to them as anything other then a terrifying emotionally cold bully to keep them terrified and submissive for the show any amount of friendliness or emotional warmth to them would project weakness and leave their power in question and by doing that they isolate themselves having no real friends to care about them and be there for them out of love instead of out of fear of punishment in short, it's lonely at the top and they may have that power all for themselves but of all the things it brings them true happiness will never one of them and that will make them miserable. Miserable and alone forever and because they've stolen the people's freedom they will be paranoid and psychologically unstable for fear of losing that power like Joseph Stalin for instance. Because when you steal something... you spend your whole life fighting to keep it.
I like how you expressed this. Speakers like Brendan Bruchard and Simon Sinik talk about “leaders eating last” and how “it’s lonely at the top” is a false self imposed relationship to have with ones employees, so some leaders try to change this (maybe related to the Christian idea “servant leaders” or leading by supporting your team). Meanwhile Douglas Ruffkoff works with the super rich who are preparing for collapse rather than reinvesting into the systems they exploited and are asking him for advise about how to keep their worker-slaves-body guards in line should that happen. That CEO who took a pay cut to pay all employees at least $75k/year who doesn’t regret it and has better relationships now is an example of abandoning this problem you described. Surely being so super rich you’re emotionally impoverished it isn’t worth it or valuable to the guy at the top either... we’ve evolved over millions of years needing supportive relationships to survive, and probably ultimately need them more than abstractions like coin.
"Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you" is such a great line to me, because it also can refer to the Nietzschean view that Christian morality is based on accepting the (probably unsatisfactory) state in which you are in. In order to progress, you must surpass who you were.
I personally believe this line also link to Buddhism idea of "all is empty", a part of it believes you can further your point of view when you realize you are not you, but a vessel. self identity is a anchor, it insures who you are, and stops you from becoming something else (for better or worse).
I believe what VytenisR1 was saying is that for there are no mutation in gene, which is a sudden and accidental break away from what the organism were, there won't be evolution; nationalism is a form of not willing to adapt and change from the original state of a country. and I believe you can apply similar logic the the rest of his list
Felix Kovac the difference is, Nietzsche didn't believe in progress. Time isn't a line, but flat circle. But a lot of things Nietzsche learned from Hegel anyway, it's can't still be considered as synthesis of Schopenhauer and Hegel, but it's a thing very similar to.
Spike is Diogenes school of cynical though with a mix of Bruce Lee's utilitarianism thought. Jet is Platonic Faye is Hedonism as Anton LaVey might advocate with a bit of Nietzche Ed is at first seemingly an anarchist but I think she leans more towards a Neo-Stoic since she doesn't allow anything to bother her.
Hey # wisecrack I have some recommendations for Wisecrack Edition. The Philosophy of Apocalypse Now The Wire Cowboy Bebop Metal Gear Solid Spec Ops The Line Naoki Urasawa's Monster No Country For Old Men Moral Orel Trigun Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Just watched Ghost in the Shell for the first time and it was amazing, but I'm left wanting a bit because I feel like the movie ended just as it was beginning. Gunna watch the sequels next, hopefully they explore the themes they introduced some more.
MymindisaMaze I had this same first impression. Many viewings later, with also watching the live action film, I feel that the original anime, while seemingly unbalanced and short, is also an ideal density of super awesome information packed into almost every minute of its running time. Also its incompleteness invites you to imagine forward for yourself.
I highly recommend Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the original TV series (not the remake on Netflix). Personally I enjoyed it more than the film. It explores a lot more philosophical ideas and let's you be emersed in that world more. The only disclaimer I give is that if you watch the English dubbed version, be prepared to be a little annoyed by the voices of these robots known as tachkomas. You get used to them and they serve a deeper purpose in the story later.
I was thinking this while watch this video. The bad voice acting does have a charm to it though...but overall I think many lines could be re-written and voiced by better voice actors. Soooo basically this will have to be done by some renegade fans that aren't afraid to get the pants sued.
Pretty hard to apply Hegel to anything without over-simplifying majorly, but all things considered you did a pretty good job here. The one thing you messed up was the slave/master relationship, I think it would have been much easier to say that if the slave is doing the work set by the master, then, a relationship of inter-dependence eventually develops, wherein the master is not truly free. This mutual recognition of inter-dependence is where confrontation arises, and the sublation of it is the resolution of the conflict, into a new, more equitable relationship, or at the very least the destruction of the original relationship.
Hands down, this is the BEST explanation of Ghost in the Shell i have ever seen. the film was a little thick and ominous, purposefully and necessarily. i knew i liked it, but the meaning only reached me on a subconscious level. I can now relate consciously. continue the great work Wisecrack!
Deshmukh Adhikari Next up is Monty python, followed by Get out and Always sunny in Philadelphia. The fact that this blew up right before they released a python episode makes you look like a plant, or hack fraud.
Good stuff, Jared 👌 📝 1:35-1:46 Damn. 2:54 Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hagel "Conflict breeds progress" 3:33 limited perspective, and a better reality available 4:05 dialectics 5:15 confined within boundaries 6:10 one stagnates, the others get better/grow/become more powerful 7:47 classic master behavior: no room for compromise; unproductive 8:18 Sublation (Synthesis): combination without loss. 8:54 Why sublation is crucial. Isolation, and multiple different perspectives. 9:33
In other words...Stagnation is a bane in any living creature's existence. If you don't change, and improve, you'll be inevitably be devoured by those who suffer more because those who pressure themselves more tend to learn faster and not stagnate.
Kotor 2 is the reason why I understand the way the force works much more now. Also was the first to introduce me to metaphysical concepts that I actually took seriously.
miguel No it's not you dumbass, biblical references are just there because the creators found them 'cool', the real leyers of the plot and characters are too much deep for your dumb mind.
Guys, congratulations for this excellent episode. My god, it's the most practicle and didatic explaining of Hegel's dialectic that i have ever seen. As a dialectical-materialist that i am, i've been studying Hegel's dialectics for a year now, in an attempt to reconstruct and fully comprehend Marx's line of thinking, and I can affirm, it's hard as hell to understand. You guys did a marvelous job putting his Dialectics in therms that a non experienced student can easily understand. Please, keep up with this high quality work, and, if i may, i would like to ask more approaches like these to the German Phillosophy of late 1800's. Thanks again.
'... for sponsoring this video and supporting us...' Ergo giving us extra money and edge to allow us to spend more time on research and doing other stuff. Admittedly the first part of the sentence does sound a bit funny however there's method to this madness. Comparison at the end of the movie however simple does makes sense.
"Ghost In The Shell is probably one of the most philosophically complex animated films out there, so a big shout out to Naruto Online -for sponsoring this video and supporting us as we tackle this cultural milestone-".
It's also very much like the philosophy of Evangelion. Instrumentality is the reunification and synthesis of all possibilities, but the fundamental issue of reunification means that there's nothing else to snthesize.
you guys got this almost on the nail.. only problem is a few ideas... She knows she is not unique. Like at all. Its in your face how un-unique she is and how she feels she is. (many scenes show us that her body is not unique and is actually quite popular) ALSO! No section 6 is not the master over the puppet master. The puppet master is a slave to an organization/ government hybrid, note not section 9 section 9 is the organization on the outside investigating the actions of the puppet master. The puppet master is not merging with her for any other reason but to survive. He needs her as much as she will find out that she needs him. The mind is "limited" when compared to him but he needs her perspective to "evolve" and she needs his "unlimited" scope of mind and scale to widen her perspective.
note: you guys are great! Sure, most of the time I do find issues with your analysis but I watch your videos because I enjoy them and I find that your perspective gives me a different one more often than not.
Major actually had a problem with her own identity, as she became unable to tell whether she is real or programmed, or at least scared at the prospect. This was started by the confrontation with both brainwashed victims of the Puppetmaster. But she clearly stated that what defines her as a person simply consists of collection of her memories - the scene after the diving. And she witnessed that it all can go away with ghost hacking. That is an identity crisis beyond our current understanding. Would i be myself wheni lose part of all my memories? Will I be myself when i gain new ones? The answer to those questions is actually "No", but we have still memory of the past which helps us to recognize string of events and recall our past "self". If those memories are lost? Yet at the beginning of the movie is indicated that she despite her work as a police officer, uses the connection to the network simpy to watch world around her. In 1995 it was just a science fiction, now almost everyone on the planet know what is and how to use internet, while some people are capable and willing to study absolutely everything in attempt to know themselves better. The Puppetmaster, even when a program, had similar purpose before he gained conscience, thats why it perceived Major as a "reflection". Now is it just a logical comparation, or an emotion? And is there actually a difference, as Project 2501 was still incomplete? Image of human being is in the GitS moved into the "Shell". This image is demonstrated to be "perishable" (or ever changing) without actual damage to the body. Image of a artifical being or artifical consciousness is manifested via Project 2501. Even when both concepts are still fictional, they are put on the same level as its said that what defined them are memories or information gathered over course of their existence.
You guys didn't mention how this is essentially describing natural selection and evolution. Adaptation means surviving, lack or variation breeds extinction etc
Cody Ostrander I'm aware this is philosophy not biology. I was just pointing out how this Philosophy has grounds in biological fact. I think that gives Hegel's dialectics another dimension to discuss
If philosophy does not remain true on the real world. What use we have for it?. The main issue whit his this ideas is that establishes values of superiority by arbitrary standards. thus making this whole thing a great exercise of futility and incomplete ideas. Now the real step to even accept any of this as remotely true is to evaluate his value system, by comparing to different scenarios.
+Cody Ostrander certainly this is about philosophy but that doesn't mean parallels don't exist. Also philosophy deals in abstract ideas but these ideas must have some concrete basis in our reality otherwise they serve us no purpose
You put emphasis on Kusanagi's human thoughts yet that is a bit of a misconception. A (big) part of the whole story is her doubt of being even human (which she's not). And that flaws your theory, because around 6:00 you claim that both Kusanagi and the Puppet master "each have what the other needs". Which isn't true, this also reveals itself during the last segment where Kusanagi clearly states that the puppet master "may be getting the better part of the deal". This also shows around 6:50 where you rip some movie quotes fully out of context. When Aramagi mentioned the puppet master only being a puppet himself he did not refer to the real puppet master but rather someone they assumed to be the personage. You also claim that Secion 9's acting against the puppet master would never be productive yet totally overlook the havoc which was wrecked by the puppet master (allegedly) attacking specific politicians. I can't help get the idea that you're not trying to actually explain something but you rather grab a few existing theories and perspectives and merely check if those can "fit" the movie somehow, but without actually bothering to dive into the real thoughts behind said movie(s). Just because A philosophy may seem to apply if you only check up on specific parts of the movie doesn't mean that this is also the actual underlying philosophy.
Yeah, I noticed some of that too. She also mentioned wanting to have children, and well, the puppet mastered decided for her what was best for her. This is the first time I've ever seen the movie, so my first question was trying to figure out where are all the humans and the movie answered that somewhat... But I wish it was answered more clear cut, like they no longer refer to humans as "humans", but rather as "ghosts", like the idea of humans existing as a mere "ghost" in a cyber "shell" is putting humanity up high or something...(I would have to beg to differ, but that's neither here nor there). I think the thing that I'm scratching my head the most on is how can there not be any humans would be like "No, it sounds nice, but I like not having any cyber-enhancements". The philosophy of the movie does seem to be very heavily influenced in gnosticism (flesh bad, spirit good), or as they put it (Flesh nothing, spirit everything). And I'm just now realizing this, but I think the Puppet Master just wifed her....he wanted to "merge", and have "offspring" and well, it's a permanent union between them both, and a lot of this "chemistry" fits with their idea of the "soulmate". THat's just my take, I know your comment is 3 years old, I hope you don't mind that it got some attention.
Many thanks for responding to my request. The sublation theme explored here is really thought provoking and transformational given my limited perception that the film recently released focuses on the boundaries between what constitutes human and machine. I work for an international company and can really relate to sublation as the works requires working with different cultures and languages.
@@themexis eh... you are free to choose sponsors that don't want to mangle your video. The pay might be less, but better quality videos bring in more income anyways. This selling out left just a bad taste after a good video.
@@benzur3503 That view is flawed and unfounded. Yes, a conflict can lead to evolution, but that 1 time verses the 10 times it doesn't means there's a lot of ignorance and blind belief. I have logical debates and arguments with one of my neighbours almost every day; that doesn't mean we look for an acceptable median or change each others' opinions in the slightest.
Harry Underwood Harry if neither of your opinion’s change about the truth value of any statement, can you find the root causes of your disagreements? Otherwise being stuck in a point of no change it’s not a real debate. Finding what amongst your opinions has in common with each other will allow you both to see what might be fundamental and what contingental out of your core arguments. The synthesis is not an entirely new form of knowledge obtained like arithmetic but rather a more tuned and multifaceted view on the subject of discussion that gives better understanding of the topics. The view expressed in this video is reductive, but it holds a facet of the pursuit of truth and meaning. Mistaking that you’ve achieved absolute truth and thus not listening to any possible change negates your possibility of understanding change. Also I still haven’t read more than a line of actual Hegelian writings and might return to this comment thread in a year or two after I’ve gathered the sufficient background to comprehend at least the prelude to the phenomenology of spirit. Will probably have a different view altogether, but will be curious to find the commonality between the new and the old
Thnx a lot for this Hegel approach - it clarifyes most of the core philosophical issues of GITS. It surely would be greate to go into deeper detail with the main points of the philosophy arond SYBORG & GHOST technologies.
On the subject of synthesises and Naruto you would have been better off talking about Orochimaru since that's pretty much his whole chracter's schtick. His only goal is to arrive at discovering new ways to use the abilities available to him and he basically teams up with his own antithesis to find a new synthesis to defeat Madara.
It's not terrible voice acting, Major is a cyborg, she doesn't blink and of course that her voice is gonna sound robotic and monotone, same as google translate women voice for example.
I love metal gear but I don't think it has a singular message to teach, and plenty of its messages are very on the nose. But sure, I totally watch any and every MGS video they feel like doing.
I've watched Ghost in A Shell a few movies and tv shows even the live action, and each time I watch the first one I think I understand it only to watch videos like this and realize how little I understood. This movie and the Matrix are both so complex and interesting and G.I.T.S was way before it times in what is being said.
When looking at Ghost in the shell, I always thought of it as like a Japanese version of Robocop with the whole idea of blending man and machine. Plus Robocop was the first film I saw before this.
If I recall right in the movie ---SPOILER ALERT--- she doesn't fusion and he is not a program but earlier version of she. Watching this "The philosophy of" I see why so many fans are disappointed. Thx great video!
You should do a follow-up on this idea using "Battle Angel Alita." It has a lot of the same overtones of "Ghost in the Shell," but with some subtle differences on the societal outlook and the progress of human and technology merging. Especially the final theme of whether it's better to give up one's self for the betterment of society, or whether the self is more important than the society.
you said that Puppet Master lacked personal identity, while immediatly showing a line where he pointed to have sentience and self-consciousness (which entail personal identity, I think), and where (later in that same scene) he said that what he lacked were other biological features; specifically, reproductive capacities that would allow him/her to perfect itself through adaptation (or something like that). Nice video, though. Thanks
That's an interesting point! I didn't even think about how the fact that he has sentience and self-consciousness gives him an identity. Maybe even though the robot has sentience and self-consciousness... as a robot with programming, he is a determined being. And therefore, he may have an identity, but he does not have the ability to construct his _own_ identity. Merging with the major allows him to take on the experiences and unique desires of a free person. Thus, he is maybe made a more authentic being.
the problem with that reasoning is assuming that humans are not determined in similar ways to those programmed machines or robots are (after all, we are machines as well); it is also problematic and controversial in philosophy and science to assume that determinism is incompatible with free will (maybe it's not)
Shirow Masamune spent some time in his author's notes to say that the master-slave or top-down views of minds/spirits/ghosts and the idea of 2 becoming 1 are wrong and complexity (as in a holon) is produced as things increase the space of their network rather than sublimating down to something smaller (the borg also use this idea they expand outwards not into the mind but out into the external world through space). Also, when you talk about the master-slave position of Section 9 the formation of section 9 and its actions (especially see the end of chapter 2 with the kid and with the politician) suggest that there is at the least a desperate attempt to find new space, to open boundaries and for the team to be free of being 'Dogs of War' as their past indicates (thinking transhumanism free of the fathers here on a social level). Shirow also makes arguments against viewing this as master-slave dialectics because that hierarchical view is only ever based on selecting one way of looking at the situation without context of the wider network. Overall, the being that is the fusion is not better or more evolved. I understand the application of dialectics but both the classical and the Hegelian way can be used on any argument (including what this video does and what I am saying here) so it isn't wrong but it has some other possible answers.
Hegel's Master/Slave dialectic is very interesting and it definitely seems to be true in some situations. But, in our contemporary era, I am not sure if in general the Slaves of our society (specifically unskilled labor workers) can really improve themselves. For instance, Apple hires lots of people in China to assemble their products. However, they are not gaining skills or really moving up at all. Meanwhile, the Master is actually becoming better. Tim Cook may have people doing tons of work for him and with the success of Apple he may be able to sit back more, but overall he is actually learning and improving himself as he runs his business. Is this a bad or good contradiction/counter argument to Hegel's Master/Slave dialectic?
the master isn't becoming better, just wealthier, what you're getting at is dialectical materialism, I suggest you read Marx, since his work is heavily inspired from that of Hegel
But I get what Josh is saying. While the workers are becoming better skiled at the manufacture of the product that makes apple rich and therefore becomes the master of that technology, for all intents and purposes. But Tim Cook is becoming more skilled at keeping his worksforce subject through restrictive compensation, media manipulation, business acumen and strategy. In other words, the workers are diminished without Cook and Cook is diminished without the workforce. But the workforce, in this situation, one would expect that the workforce, should be able to exert influence to garner more balanced conditions, but Cook is in a position of greater influence. While cook has more to lose, he has more resources to absorb some degree of loss before having to relent in his approach. The workforce however, is in such terrible circumstances, that even the prospect of "upsetting the apple cart" is very dangerous. Thus the workforce is kept down, not so much that they feel they have no recourse but to rise up, but just enough that they are too fearful to speak out. The Cooks of the world have become very adept at using every skill humanly available to them, to maintain this situation. And we are complicit :/
I would say the situation in current era, we are specialized, thus there are no more real master at individual level, what I mean is when you look at Apple as a totality, there may have a master/slave situation, but when you zoom in on each individual in this system, the workers are only specialized on one step of the entire assembly line, the people who worked at factory management only gain experience in how to manage over-worked labors, even the higher up like CEO of the company are only getting more skillful in managing and directing the system, technically no one sits back and get rich without doing anything except the concept of the company itself, which in reality cannot make any decision, if you come to the conclusion of the system is the true master and we people as slave of it should fight, then you got communism, and I would say our current situation is slowly going the other way which we are merging, we are becoming what we are working for, people who worked for Apple are becoming Apple, by this I mean they are slowly becoming the persona of the company, which is basically what company culture is.
+forsakedsorrow Yeah, I get ya. Pity communism doesn't work and same really can be said about laissez faire capitalism. Corporatism is, quite frankly, an awful road to take. So I'm stumped.
Josh Nyce no actually, you in an ironic way kind of enforced it, as in you provided an antitheisis/slave, so you in way are providing a counter argument to hegel's argument, the master/slave way of explaining it is simplistic.
I'm incredibly grateful for this post. I've been thinking about the future of humanity considering the current state of affairs, in both the geopolitical and socio-cultural sense, and we're definitely gravitating towards a very complex future if we don't take into heed warnings like in Ghost in the Shell. Most definitely, GitS is referring to the singularity and how merging with technology won't mean the end of humanity, for we will become something new but still human. In my opinion there are two forces that have driven Humanity forward, and they are the need to overcome our initial conditions but also the need to eliminate anything that may threat our existence. If the next generation of artificial intelligences perpetuate these two impulses, they will continue to be human in a way.
6:26 it doesn't matter if he does nothing, slaves work, sell product and master is the one gaining money(ultimate goal). As slaves work and gain experience in the field, master is the one who is gaining more important thing that can be used in any other fields. For example if tomorrow others invade or a disaster happens he can move to other sources to benefit while slaves can't. (9:30) Overspecialize and you breed in weakness.
Human is limited for its shell like knowledge thus create weakness like argument, Cyborg is limited for its constraint conciousness like it was program to do certain things even complex that even human cant do. Merging of human and cyborg weakness attains godhood, a body never deteriorates and complex conciousness
Hey! Great video! I believe you did an excellent job explaining the philosophy of Ghost in a Shell with the exception of of the concept of slavery. Slavery is more mental than physical hence why a master can be a single person and have 1000 slaves without an uprising. Slavery uses a power dynamic that you overlooked in your video explanation twice (real explanation and Naruto example). In the real world, slavery exploits the physical by conquering the mental. Slave mentality has oppressed world citizens since humans created civilization (tribes). In the Naruto example, if he became hokage by force, he would be the leader and yes the slaves would have more knowledge on how to do something specifically but they wouldn't up rise because they can not defeat their oppressor. Same thing is true in the real world, most people lose matches before the battle begins because of that power dynamic. It can be a physical or mental power that separates the master from the slave. Either way, the concept of the power dynamic is crucial. If it was not, then we would put every company out of business where people have to "strike" to get "fair wages" etc. because the slaves would have just taken over the company. The power division keeps the balance. Does anyone feel me?
3:01 - Its a bit like chuckling about "John Adam Stephen Smithian". His names are super common in German (maybe not the most current names) - really nice pronunciation, thank you for making this effort : ) I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you for this comprehensive analysis!
Hey I had a question. I understand what you're trying to get across with the whole meeting of the minds thing but I was wondering what specifically would apply to the Master and Slaves at 6:05. I'm pretty sure I understand what you're getting across with the whole video I was just wondering what the conclusion to that specific analogy would be if it were to fall in line with this mentality.
I just finished watching this movie and I loved it. This film was incredible. The animation, soundtrack, and story was all top notch. I don’t know why I haven’t seen this until now I have been doing myself a huge disservice by not seeing it sooner. I have also learned that there are multiple different versions of it as well as a TV Anime series and now I plan on watching them all. To those who haven’t seen this film yet, I highly recommend doing so.
Hegel might have been difficult when Jared learnt it but he did such a great job explaining it I find no problem understanding the master/slave analogy at all, great video :)
Especially the sentence : "Ghost in the shell is one of the most philosophically complex anime out there, so big shout out to Naruto" Made me think that he was saying that Naruto was also one of the most philosophically complex anime...
This same argument and analysis can be made for Mass Effect with regards to the Geth and Quarians relationship along with the Reapers and the galactic forces. Still amazing and enlightening.
Sublimation is a completely non-existant reality. There is always a cost. This is basically the philosopher stone problem, to go to another Anime. Let me ask you, can you think of a technology with no downside? Is everything truly progressing? I argue that progress is illusionary to begin with, but if I leave that out, I can argue that every tech has a cost that is high. Wars have all but vanished in the traditional sense. However, we could all be wiped out in one big war at any moment. Furthermore, conflict still remains. There are subtle differences as well. The generation involved the the most involved war of all time, WWII, gained considerable positives and negatives from being involved. Without the war, did we truly progress when their infustructure, opportunities, wages, security, lesiure, and subsidsy were all at all time highs post war? Likewise, we have the lowest mortality rate for infants ever, and yet human suffering for them seems to have returned in higher allergy, autism, cancer, and sudden death situations down the road. We have saved their lives at birth only to have many die or suffer just delayed. When we look at the natural process of evolution, we see a true opportunity to avoid breeding in weakness, and opportunities to solve genetic problems on a geological time scale. Yet when we evolve via technology we speed up the process of change in dynamic ways that have far more frightening reprocussions. We no longer deal with shit in our roads from horses, so we may avoid getting sick from that. However our emissions from cars may kill us off in a climate change worst case scenario. We may improve productivity and efficiency to the point that waste is minimalized, but at the same time we could then ensure resources are exhausted or profits are monopolized. I put it this way, was there sublimation with any technology prior? Perhaps clothing... I can't really ensure any other in my mind.
You're more or less saying that there are bigger risks involved in Sublation than benefits bit I would argue that as long as the benefits outweigh the risks, it's still worth it. After WW2 we gained nuclear weapons that may wipe all of us out at any moment but it also ensured that we won't do anything like as that would be like committing suicide. In a way it brought us peace even if it's only temporary. We can use this time that we have to develop new technologies before a third world war occurs and maybe by that time we would already be space fairing species. Maybe our expansion would be too great to be destroyed entire by a global war. What I'm basically saying is with greater progress also comes greater risks but as long as the benefits out weigh those risks. It's still worth trying.
This is the best explication I have heard for the result of integrating man and machine. Great job guys, thank you for always giving us amazing thought provoking intellectual videos!
Hey man I know this is 2 years later but I'm a huge GITS fan and I've been trying to figure out what 2501 refers to since years. Why do you think it references that?
keremcantarhan hey man I know this is 6 months later but I think OP was thinking of 24601, which is Val Jeans prisoner number before he’s freed. It reoccurs a lot in Les Mis but as far as I remember 2501 doesn’t appear in Les Mis at all.
"I want us to merge"

You don't know what the word "literally" means, do you?
Whoa, I never realized how close it is.
lmv92x I'll just refer you to 12:06 so maybe you get it.
Good message but please use more punctuation next time lol for easier reading
"Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you" is such a great line to me, because it also can refer to the Nietzschean view that Christian morality is based on accepting the (probably unsatisfactory) state in which you are in.
In order to progress, you must surpass who you were.
Also evolution, nationalism, racial segregation, nurture, technology and human interaction.
That's what hindusim holy book says, soul changes bodies like bodies changes clothes after you die you change yourself. What christians disagree on
Felix Kovac the difference is, Nietzsche didn't believe in progress. Time isn't a line, but flat circle. But a lot of things Nietzsche learned from Hegel anyway, it's can't still be considered as synthesis of Schopenhauer and Hegel, but it's a thing very similar to.

As an anime fan I was offended by their "need" to dumb it down AND by how they used the Naruto material. Yikes 😒

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Just watched Ghost in the Shell for the first time and it was amazing, but I'm left wanting a bit because I feel like the movie ended just as it was beginning. Gunna watch the sequels next, hopefully they explore the themes they introduced some more.
MymindisaMaze I had this same first impression. Many viewings later, with also watching the live action film, I feel that the original anime, while seemingly unbalanced and short, is also an ideal density of super awesome information packed into almost every minute of its running time.
Also its incompleteness invites you to imagine forward for yourself.
it isn't done. they are still making new series all the time
same, also felt the same way with akira i wish the story and world were fleshed out more
I highly recommend Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the original TV series (not the remake on Netflix).
Did you watch dub or sub? I initially watched the dub and felt wanting more. The sub wraps it up a little better IMO.
The philosophy of series is maybe the best series on RUclips.
James Flaum It's mostly Rick and Morty, and that series is shit so no.
teamstarpug why do you hate rick and morty? I like it but think it's a bit overhyped
Finn Chambers It's extremely over rated. The fanbase is cancerous, and it just isn't funny or smart.
philosophy of "philosophy of" incoming
It's so sad when people bash a good show just because it's popular
Instead of remaking the movie, they should have just done a re-dub. 90's anime voice acting feels anachronistic
leave it be
I was thinking this while watch this video. The bad voice acting does have a charm to it though...but overall I think many lines could be re-written and voiced by better voice actors. Soooo basically this will have to be done by some renegade fans that aren't afraid to get the pants sued.
current english dub isn't really good either though
The japanese audio is fine. Just watch it with subtitles.
@@Projeckt Are you kidding? Localization at that time was horrendous. The dub was terrible.

Wow. Awesome video with great insight. Glad to see such great content available on RUclips that enriches minds. Keep up the great work
you guys got this almost on the nail.. only problem is a few ideas... The mind is "limited" when compared to him but he needs her perspective to "evolve" and she needs his "unlimited" scope of mind and scale to widen her perspective.
note:
you guys are great!
Can you do a philosophy of Spec Ops the Line?
in the 90´s men in black cartoon Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones use id cards from section 6 as fake id government agency
I seriously love these videos! Thank you for thinking of the stuff I have questions for
You guys didn't mention how this is essentially describing natural selection and evolution. Adaptation means surviving, lack or variation breeds extinction etc
Neuroticmancer Hegel's dialectic doesn't deal with evolution. This is philosophy, not biology. They would have no need to talk about evolution.
The Philosophy of Mushishi? Pretty please? One of the most unique, mature and thoughtful shows out there.

WHAT IS THE SONG PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AT 9:00? PLEASE
Terrible voice acting? I totally respect the movie though.

This was a wonderful video ! Learned somethin new :P

I knew you guys were gonna make this! I just didn't know how soon lol. just saw this movie last night and I've been waiting for a review on it!
Please do a adventure time philosophy since the shows ending
Human is limited for its shell like knowledge thus create weakness like argument, Cyborg is limited for its constraint conciousness like it was program to do certain things even complex that even human cant do. Merging of human and cyborg weakness attains godhood, a body never deteriorates and complex conciousness
do a philosophy of the Fred movie trilogy
This film will always live with me. It one of my top favorite films of all time.
Can you do Cowboy Bebop?
Does anyone feel me?
plz do the philosophy of one punch man
3:01 - Its a bit like chuckling about "John Adam Stephen Smithian". His names are super common in German (maybe not the most current names) - really nice pronunciation, thank you for making this effort : )
I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you for this comprehensive analysis!
Do psycho pass and death note
I forgot neon genesis evangelion
Eva is overdone
Then how about madoka magika
I don't know, Death Note disappointed me. It had so much potential, and then it was just chlichee.
While I wasn't the biggest fan of Psycho Pass, I think that is a VERY good candidate for a philosophy of video.
"Ghost in the shell is probably the most complex anime out there" bro have you even heard of paprika?
Or Paranoid agent?
great work. I loved it!!!
Hegel might have been difficult when Jared learnt it but he did such a great job explaining it I find no problem understanding the master/slave analogy at all, great video :)
ghost in the shell next to naruto? come on
Especially the sentence : "Ghost in the shell is one of the most philosophically complex anime out there, so big shout out to Naruto"
Made me think that he was saying that Naruto was also one of the most philosophically complex anime...
a sponsor is a sponsor. wouldnt you want your game sitting next to a movie like gits?
That was for the sponsor not to do with ghost in the shell that much
I stopped before the |Naruto thing, I guess you need to simplify shit for dumb people, just like the adaptation of the live-action
zdulcun boo fckng who deal with it
09:37 Is that the origin of the Apple OS X Finder icon?
philosophy of the persona games pleeeeease
Sublation, not sublimation. sublimation is chemistry lol
You lost me with your first aside that progress is an illusion
explain please why do you think that progress is illusion and your definition of progress
Brilliant analysis. Great job
What about doing "The Philosophy of the Foundation series?"
This is the best explication I have heard for the result of integrating man and machine. Great job guys, thank you for always giving us amazing thought provoking intellectual videos!
Isn't 2501 a reference to les misérables?
Hey man I know this is 2 years later but I'm a huge GITS fan and I've been trying to figure out what 2501 refers to since years. Why do you think it references that?
keremcantarhan hey man I know this is 6 months later but I think OP was thinking of 24601, which is Val Jeans prisoner number before he’s freed. It reoccurs a lot in Les Mis but as far as I remember 2501 doesn’t appear in Les Mis at all.
This video taught me the important lesson that I was right to watch the sub titles version and not the dub
Still waiting on thay pink guy video
the stagnation theory is sheer conjecture
