How true. Saiki and her partners in crime own the stage and hold the crowd in the palm of their collective hands. They all exude total confidence with no trace of arrogance whatsoever. And they perform with an uninhibited joy that is totally infectious. When Saiki screams at the audience to "just bring it" they typically do just that. And, in Japan, in normal conversation to tell someone to just bring it is considered quite rude.

Band Maid is a Hard Rock band who incorporate several elements like metal, punk, pop, jazz and even blues into their music.
The main instrumental section Kanami- lead guitarist, MISA- bass and Akane- drums are all professionally trained musicians who have been playing multiple instruments since as young as 4 years old. They are in their late 20s now.
Kanami is also the one who writes all of their music while Miku- rhythm guitarist/backup vocals, does the lyrics alongside Saiki- main vocalist.
The band was started by Miku in 2013 who found Kanami on the internet and recruited her. Then Kanami got Akane to join in, as they knew each other and had played together in previous occasions. In turn, Akane recruited MISA who graduated from the same music institute as her.
Later on, Miku having realised her voice wasn’t suitable for Hard Rock passed over the vocals to Saiki who joined them through an audition.

the maid costumes were the idea of that very cute rythym guitarist and 2nd singer named miku.she was in a failed idol group around 2010 or so that went nowhere fast. she then went to work at a maid cafe -yeah that's a thing in japan - and came up with a brainstorm. let's have a hard rock band wearing the costumes and we will blow people's minds with the sound . not expecting this to come out of these girls. she found the other musicians. bassist misa and drummer akane went to the tokyo school of music and lead guitarist kanami was a singer songwriter. then saiki the vocalist was added for the final touch. miku learned guitar from kanami and now is a more than adequate rythym player. kicking asses all over the world now

  • @RetiredInThailand
    @RetiredInThailand 4 года назад +15

Yeah, that's almost the way the band was formed. One of the girls did work in a Japanese Maid Cafe, and did some idol singing, but wasn't really getting anywhere with it, so she decided to form a band based on her maid cafe experiences (she felt the 'gap' in preception between hard-rock and maids would be a nice gimmick,) and was a fan of the guitar player who did covers on RUclips, so asked her is she was interested, and she for some reason said 'sure, why not' ... the guitar player knew a drummer who knew a bassist, and then they decided they needed a strong front-woman vocalist so they auditioned for a singer ... and Band-Maid was formed ... they now have a catalog of over 90 songs, and not a stinker in the bunch ... this was their first attempt, and the song was written for them, but they have since moved on and do almost all their own stuff and it was the right decision ... the guitar player is a rift/fill genius and does most of the arrangements which are incredibly layered and interesting. The other guitarist (she didn't know how to play before she formed the band, but is now doing some very decent riff & fill playing herself) is considered a genius in songwriting, writing in a style that not only is very good on an English level (when translated still holds up very well in terms of expressing images) but is also done in a style that native Japanese speakers consider one of the hardest forms of Japanese songwriting and singing (I don't pretend to understand what they really mean, but I just point this out to emphasize the level of talent we are dealing with here .... not to mention that the drummer, bassist and guitar player are all university educated multi-instrumentalists!!)
And that's just touching the surface of the band's talent and personality ... I haven't mentioned some of the more interesting surprises in store as you fall deeper and deeper into the Band-Maid universe (alter-ego anyone?)
I am a big BABYMETAL fan, they are what lead me to all the great Japanese and Asian bands and performers I now listen to far more than any western music, but while I still enjoy BABYMETAL and will always love them, Band-Maid is way out on top for me in terms of favorites (but then again that's no shame to be just a tier below Band-Maid ... heck, If I had a chance to listen to Dimash vs Band-Maid, even though Dimash is the world's best vocalist by far, I'd still go with Band-Maid!)

Thrill was Band Maid's very first music video and it shows you almost everything you need to know about them, great vocals, great guitar, great bass, and solid drumming. I said "almost" because the one thing Thrill does not show you is how great Band Maid's drummer, Akane, is when unleashed on a full set of drums. Like BabyMetal, Band Maid is way better live. Also, whenever people react to both BabyMetal and Band Maid, the conversation will eventually get around to comparing the two. I love them both but cannot compare them musically because they are two completely different entities. I can explain the difference between them though. Band Maid is simply the best rock band on the planet today. BabyMetal is something more, a state of mind, an unstoppable movement, and a force for good. It was BabyMetal that led me to Band Maid, and to Wagakki Band, and to Doll$Boxx, Sakura Gakuin, Sabaton, and the Hu Band.

99% of the time with Band-Maid, you'll want to react to their live stuff. Only "Blooming" should be in music video format. Some tidbits on the members:
Lead Vocals - Saiki -> she was brought in last, and she was semi-lied to. They never told her she would have to wear a maid outfit, until she went to the first show. SURPRISE! lol (she wasnt happy about it initially)
Backup vocals + Rhythm guitar - Miku (pigtails girl) -> She is the OG who started the band. She was the main vocalist but recognized she wasnt strong enough, so she recruited Saiki to replace her for lead vocals and learned rhythm guitar from basically zero. So she does the rhythm guitar + backup vocals. Also, she's the most extroverted out of the bunch and is basically leading interviews, promotions, talking to fans during concerts, etc (she literally worked as a maid in a cafe, would sing during her work shifts, and thats how she got the idea to do it outside the cafe as well)
Lead guitar - Kanami -> She's basically god-level on the guitar. I believe she's the one that writes a lot of the songs as well (not alone of course, but she's definitely leading that charge).
Drums - Akane -> This girl is basically god-level on drums (like Kanami on guitar). Not that shes just fast like the best drummers, but her segmentation and subtleties are top tier. You'll see.
Bass - Misa -> Most of their songs are heavy on base, and its because Misa is fire. She palms her pick really well and switches quickly and successfully all the time.

I've heard a little Band-Maid, and they're really good! I remember loving 'Domination' live so you could check that one out.
I don't like how salty some of their fans get over the Babymetal comparison though. Yes they're really only similar with the kawaii outfits and that they're Japanese, but when Babymetal is the only other female fronted Japanese band you've heard, it's not easy to not compare. Reactors tend to compare the two, but I've mostly seen Band-Maid fans with the comparisons under Babymetal reaction videos. "You should check out Band-Maid. They're way better and actually make their music", or something similar. And then there's the fans that think Band-Maid are better just cause they're their own band, and cause tHeY nOt MaNuFacTuRed LIkE bAbYmEtaL. It's the same mentality as some of the elitists in the genre tbh. Every band has their own journey to fame and recognition. It's best to respect these journeys, and, most importantly, judge how good a band/group/artist is by their music only.
With that said, I think Band-Maid is a band you'll really come to enjoy! They have more to offer than what you saw here.

Thrill is actually one of their lesser songs believe it or not. The rythym guitarist was pretty new to the guitar at the time, and they weren't allowed to write their own songs yet. I'd definitely suggest newer songs like Puzzle, Domination Live, Freedom Live, etc.

Welcome to the world of Band-Maid, one of the best pure rock bands out there...not metal, not post-punk, not nu-alt-thrash-whatever, just good old-fashioned rock!
And as everyone says, watch'em live!
BTW The costumes offer a visual dichotomy to the music. You have these outfits that suggest the shy, demure maid-culture stereotype, contrasted by this full-on balls-to-the-wall aggressive rock music. I love it.

  • @crackedjabber

So since no one else has apparently mentioned it, Miku the rhythm guitarist founded the band. She wanted to do hard rock, and be in cute maid outfits, it's a gap moe thing. She found the lead guitar Kanami on youtube. Kanami knew the drummer Akane, and Akane knew a Bassist... MISA. They tried a few gigs, and Miku decided she didn't have the voice to carry the band, so they held auditions and found Saiki. Miku then relegated herself to background vocals, and Kanami started teaching her to play rhythm guitar. Saiki didn't actually meet Miku or know about the maid outfits until the last minute of their first gig. Currently, Kanami writes their music and Miku is their lyricist. They really don't have any bad songs and their live performances are amazing. This video is basically where they started to take off.
Edit: Of course the next comment after I stop scrolling has the same information.

This band is incredible I’m so glad you’re finally taking a look at them. Every member knows exactly what they’re doing and does it flawlessly. Ngl this is the one band I actually listen to for the music and not even the singing! The lead singer does have a good voice tho don’t get me wrong! This was their first MV, they were 20-22 years old at the time. Miku, the back up vocalist and rhythm guitarist was the founder of the band. She tried a solo career but it did not take off, so ended up working in a maid cafe. She decided to form a band that would play hard rock and wear maid outfits. She called a guitarist singer/songwriter she saw (Kaname -the lead guitarist) who would later call the drummer(Akane) who said she new a bassist (MISA). Once together, Miku, the founder and original lead vocals did not think she had the right voice so they recruited current lead vocalist(Saiki). Starting in 2016 with the song "Alone" they started writing their own songs and currently write almost all their own music. They are much better live, I would suggest Play (Live) , Domination (Live), Onset (Live) and Freedom (Live). All four songs can be found on their official you tube channel. Enjoyed and subscribed, looking forward to watching some more. Peace out!

Welcome aboard, Ohrion. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with 30 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: ruclips.net/video/4uIYBkAybCI/видео.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Miku (rhythm guitar) worked in a place that required them to wear maids outfits. She thought it would be cool to start a band that wore maids outfits. She found the lead guitarist doing covers on RUclips and asked her if she wanted to start a band. The lead guitarist knew the drummer and the drummer brought in the bass player. Miku started on lead vocals but realized her voice was too soft to sing some of the vocals so they went out and found the girl doing lead vocals now. What is nice is they aren't a corporate project band.

They write their own songs they play the instruments and Rock hard. Check them out live . Very different concept, aside being female and the same country. That’s about it. The band was formed by Rythem guitarist and second vocal Miko Kobato.

Kobato miku, (rhythm guitar/back up vocals) was working in a maid Cafe in Japan. Wanted to form a band playing hard rock as a juxtaposition to the clothes. She found kaname tono (lead guitarist) on the internet. Kaname knew Akane (drummer). Akane knew misa (basist). Kobato felt her voice was not strong enough, and also like the two singer style. She found saiki on the internet.
Kobato did not know how to play the guitar. Kaname taught her.

Yeah, this is a fun song, but they have evolved enormously since this. This was written for them. Once they started writing their own songs, they became unstoppable. They are a force of nature live. Here are a couple of great songs of theirs to check out:
    Blooming - (MV) - ruclips.net/video/uUt_JBMocKM/видео.html
    Domination (Feb 14th 2020) - (Live) - ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html
They almost always drop some English in their songs, as they've always wanted to be a worldwide act. The main point of the maid gimmick is the "gap" caused between the expectation the costumes cause and the reality of the hard rock (with pop punk, metal, and even jazz influences) they play. It got them a foot in the door, and their musicality and ability to write great songs kicked the door down. Fans always wax poetic about their favorites, I get that, and I'm definitely a fan of this band. That said, give those two songs a try and I think you'll at least begin to understand why I (and a lot of people) feel like they're the best hard rock band on the planet.

To all the BAND-MAID fans who get pissed because somebody new compares them to BabyMetal (BM)...... get the fu#k over it. As far as I'm concerned, YES.... they ARE totally different, but they do have 3 things in common.... 1. they are girls, 2. they are from Japan and 3. they play hard music. I'm a hard core Band-Maid (B-M) fan..... and I like some BabyMetal stuff. It was Gimme Chocolate that re-opened the door to Japanese rock/metal for me. That's how I discovered Band-Maid...... and I've been grateful ever since.
The differences between the 2 are more than they have in common, but BabyMetal gave the West something we have never seen before..... bewilderment is the first word which comes to mind...... totally unique. They grabbed my attention and opened the Japanese door to more cool music. So before you write a negative "DICK" comment about the BM/B-M comparison, chances are that the new person reacting to Band-Maid was recommended B-M after watching a BabyMetal video. They all learn very quickly that there is really no comparison between the two, other than the 3 points I made before. Both are cool.

You just reacted to the best Rock n Roll band out there.
The maid outfits are to create the "Gap" meaning the difference between what you see "demure maids" vs Hard Rock music. It's popular in Japan. Thrill was their breakout MV. In 2 weeks it got 2 million views on Facebook. They at first thought they were hacked, but they weren't. The surprise was the huge number of views were European and American. In 2019 they performed at 5 sold-out concerts in the US last year. They are:
Miku; Band founder, vocals, rhythm guitar, lyricist, & spokes- pigeon
    Kanami; lead guitar, composer
    Akane; drummer
    MISA; bass
    Saiki; vocals
All were professionally educated/trained session/backup musicians/singers prior to joining the band.
They write, arrange, and produce their music.
I suggest you react to their latest release "Domination" live. Then you can back fill.
One last thing, they are not like Babymetal, different genre, and style. The only overlap is the fans.

Hi!!! I don't know if you've been recc'ed LoveBites or Aldious yet, but If you want some shredding and technical gymnastics these ladies got it. Try Shadowmaker, Holy War, When Destinies Align, Thunder Vengeance Live ( all LoveBites). From Aldious, We are, Dominator, Mary Gold( a ballad but really nice ) and Spirit Black are some of my faves. Thank you!!!

They get more intricate later on. Their record company probably told the to go simple for this video.

As others have said. This band is FAR better live than in the music videos.

Excellent reaction! New sub. Miku (rhythm guitar, vocal) started the band when she was working as a waitress at a Japanese "Maid Cafe". So the "band of maids" concept was her idea. This is their debut music video. But they're much more of a live band. Their live performances are generally better than the music videos. For live performance, I'd suggest this one shot in February of this year.

Other all female Japanese bands you need to check out are LoveBites, Mary's Blood, Bridear....and so many more. Also, a Japanese Band with female lead and female violinist, Unlucky Morpheus, will blow you away.

I like BabyMetal but you can't compare these two. Band Maid is a traditional rock band. BabyMetal came from the tradition in Japan of manufactured vocal groups with rotating casts, though BabyMetal has broken the mold by keeping SuMetal and MoaMetal up front (but with a rotating cast of other dancers).
Hopefully, you've seen more Band Maid to understand they are a group of equals. They all contribute equally and they all share the spotlight. People all have their favorite band member but you can't say, for example, the lead singer is the leader of the band or the lead guitarist or whoever. They all work together and all lead. That's what I like about this band. They each share the responsibility of driving the sound of the band forward.
