about the only way to use the unit is to place them around your base like towers.. because they can barely move lmao
To be fair they're really good as defensive troops, if you're reliant on the strat of smashing an initial assault and meeting the opponent with a counterattack - but definitively too slow to be used outside of that
It’s good to defend siege. More of a team death match unit, not that good in rm
Legionaries also have bonus damage of +4 vs other infantry. So on theyre first attack they deal 25 damage vs other infantry, even acounting for armor they still do like 20 damage in one hit, thats generally between 20-33% of a units hp and even after theyre charge attack they still do 20 damage per hit

Champion is expensive and takes time on its own. Druzhina is also somewhat expensive and requires castle. If you fight in post imp death match sure. Booming as pocket in closed type maps like arena sure. But otherwise....

I think dismoutned Konnik is a bit underrated here, especially since it hard counters the unit that is the hard counter to the Konnik.

Depends on which Eagle warrior in question. Mayan EEW are the only ones that trade well with Paladins. The other 2 double as raiders and anti-archer.
Out of all the unit types I love infantry most, probably because for me, the fantasy of medieval battles is pretty much about infantry. I'm glad to see the love infantry is getting the past couple years.
Don't forget the halberdier is a step above the pikeman in terms of swag
definitely slept on the condottiero, many civs have condottieros that can specialize into niche roles and completely stop metagame civs, even just the italian one is good enough with it's timing to give arbalests, halbs siege, kaimayuks, shotels, normal champions, the entire bohemian and portoguese civs a run for their money, very hard to put it in a category of course but i think it's an honorable mention unit
I initially was thinking eagle warrior number 1, before seeing anything else, but then when you talked about the kamayuk I got psyched out and thought karambit.

Slow and die to ranged or can be outrun. Way easier to counter than Mayan eagle
Yeah it's like an elephant: it is only as strong as your opponent allows it to be. Being a slow unit means you can't force an engagement. Why would your opponent stand and fight the Obuch with melee units if they excel at it? The answer is they wouldn't, so the Obuch doesn't do much in the practical sense, unless both sides are just patrolling into each other
Obuch eats buildings too
The main reason is slow walk speed. Pro players don't like slow units because they micro manage their units during battles and slow melee units can easily be outmaneuvered.
Elephants do a lot of damage too.. but they are rated poorly because of their walk speed.
7:35 I'm guessing its the Mayan EEW. Its like a Huskarl with its HP and pierce armor, and it cost effectively trades against Paladins. Not to mention its built from the barracks.

Berzerk are awesome in my opinion, they just are in a weird spot to use. In late castle you have all their upgrades when you go longswords, so mix a bit of bzk is a great thing as their move speed and regen make them better than they seem.
But it's hard to justify the upgrade to elite when you age up and have champion available ... Still they are pretty good to fight and raid with
If you have ressources to spend, it's great topick the upgrade and sprinkle some bzk in your armies

Berserk> Champ in basically every situation tbh. The cost difference is easily paid back by their ability to self heal, the speed boost is really good and the fact that they can trade cost effectively with PALADINS makes them really good as a power unit that you want to pull and overwhelming the opponent with. Mix in some Arbs and you got a very powerful army comp.
Their only downside is that you need a castle to train them, which can affect massing. But the self heal also helps here.

I'd want 6 T.C. Tigui to range/defend against my opponents, I've been wanting to do that sort of stuff - mostly on African Clearing, in this little tournament I've been going through. But as of now... no luck!
Gbeto are great units but kinda squishy very easy to lose a great mass of them. Run them into mass of xbow by mistake or an onager shot and it's a painful loss.
My personal favourites are Eagle Warrior, eutonic knights, huskarls, serjeants, and throwing axemen/gbettos.
No mention of Armenians 100hp champions???
tbh i thought it would be the gbetto cause of the high dps the speed and the ability to destroy buildings as a range unit
Berserker berserkers are my favorite infantry I just wish they made a mod to give them bear skins.
Obuch slept on HARD
Obuch are slow. It might be good at lower ELOs, but pro players will outmaneuver slow units. It's like an elephant. Situationally they can be the ideal unit and pros would know best when to use them. They aren't bad, they just aren't flexible enough i think to be considered a top infantry unit in my opinion.
I was so sure Woad Raiders would make the top 5 but when I didn't see them by 3rd I thought they probably didn't make the cut. Didnt expect Kamyuks not played in such a long time forgot how cool they are.
guess: The Japanese MAA, up there as the most terrifyig units with his comrads the Briton Crossbow and the Elite Mangudai.
but I cant imagine Hera not mentioning Eagles.
1. Either: Eagle warrior because it's versatile and counters both archers and cav pretty decently, is cheap and spamable, runs under TCs, and kills buildings and villagers

Trouble is that u can't spam them and they get killed by light cav. But they shred everything else. Plus they got cool beards.

As for the number one unit, personally I would've gone for the halberdier followed by the eagle-line, specifically the eagle scout which can be really hard to deal with in feudal. Personally I would've put the Obuch or Gbeto or Urumi Swordsman as #5 over the legionary, but must admit that the fact alone that you can spam legionaries from barracks while only needing a single Centurion near them probably makes them better.
Shoutout to the Lithuanian Champion, which they have access to despite lacking Supplies, Gambesons, Blast Furnace, and Plate Mail Armor XD
Surprised shotels weren't here. Especially with how easy they are to mass

You can deduce #1 by logic thinking because he said "we're gonna get back into unique units for a little bit" at #2 and since helbs were already mentioned and champs are pretty surely worse than legionary and depending on if you count condotiero there's only one non-uu left
my guess is mayan eagle warrior. but i think the urumi sworsdman is slept on it counters all melee so hard even teutonic knight. also obuch is strong af for how cheap it is
My guess was Urumi Swordsman because Dravidians are the best civ and you know it
I wasn't even thinking about eagles simply because they exist to replace cavalry so I don't really consider them infantry, the proof is that they are the initial scout unit for the meso civs

Kamayuk it should be mentioned really are not in their prime w/o the UT fabric shields which help a lot against ranged units.

Guess the #1 is the gurjara's unit. Imo #1 is woad raider though. INCREDIBLY gold efficient. You can wear down just about any combo with them.
So the best infantry units are units which counter cavalry or counter archers (or even both). Who would have thought?

Camels are good, but against elephants and even Cataphract, they aren't cost effective at countering cavs.

Kinda funny to have Halbs above Kamayuks, but in the context of wider application, it makes sense.
Personally I love the Gbetto but I don't think it's particularly strong - still fun tho. Similarly I like Shotel Warriors.
The list as a whole I agree with, it all makes sense. I think the Condottiero deserved an honourable mention for the shere flexibility it provides.
I've played 1000 team ranked games and never make Condottieri. They are good against gun-powder units but gun-powder units don't appear often enough to warrant their use. Condottieri are otherwise just an overpriced champion. They are a niche or specialized unit that is only really good at one thing. I don't know what flexibility you're talking about.

Berserk getting disrespect 😐 They are harder to mass than champs of course but overall a lot more versatile. (Better vs cav, faster moving, higher attack, self-healing) I think they could use a last small buff like +1 pierce armor OR +2 attack OR adjusting the hp that they end up with 80hp as elite to really put them on the top tier infantry units. I don't really see why you hate them so much though. Kinda sad. 😬
They one of the strongest they are just harder to mass and weaker to archers
i think armor or attack buffs would severly overtune them
+5 HP might be good but overall i like their place
maybe a hidden bonus like +1 or 2 attack versus villagers (as viking raids are pretty famous in history)

Another honorable mention I think could be Burmese, Japanese and Malians champions. Also Aztec champions, they're all solid 💪🏿
My guess was eagle warriors, because they're basically infantry knights, and knights are one of the best units in the game.
Kinda surprised samurai didn't make the list or even appear in the honourable mentions section. They're really good in their role of countering other civ's unique units and train in only 9 seconds (very nice for when rams are pushing your castle and you want infantry to zone them out).

I still use your "Ideal Unit Composition For Every Civilization" video as a daily resource when playing random civs and you pointed Berserks as the main unit for Vikings.
Did you change your mind and the video is outdated or am I missing something?

Not sure when that video was made, but MAA line has gotten a lot of buffs. Berserkers are still a good option if your enemy is spamming cavalry/infantry with no archers/castles to back them up, but they die much faster to arrows than champs.
I'd still recommend berserkers if you're fighting a civ like the Goths with their infantry/hand cannon combo in the late game. The extra speed of the berserker might help them chase down the hand cannons while champ's PA doesn't play as much of a role due to the HC's bonus damage. They're mostly there to deal with the Huskarls and protect your own Arbalests though. Or even crossbows really, since Vikings can wipe Goths in Castle.
I thought TK would go on honorable mention, but i guess their weakness to archers is just too great, sure it has 100hp but now that barracks units got gambeson TK now have the same pierce armor as regular champion. 😢

Surprised condos didn't get into the list even as a honorable mention.
On paper you may think they are good only vs gunpowder but they are incredibly well rounded. You don't need too many upgrades, they are a quick answer in a lot of situations, so strong in early imp, solid stats, decent speed, shreds gunpowder units, easy to produce...

I originally thought the Jag warrior forgetting about the Gbeto until you showed the Chakram thrower.
But I disagree with the eagles, that's definitely a personal preference. Gbeto just have too much going for them.

I think they at least deserved an honorable mention if not a spot on the actual list. I would rather have a bunch of Elite Obuchs than Legionaries for sure. The fact that enemy armor is removed until the damaged unit is FULLY HEALED is huge. Even with monk support, the fact a unit damaged by an Obuch must reach FULL HEALTH to regain the lost armor is HUGE
Obuch mass is so strong
Armor reduction, snowballs so quickly with trash like skirms and it’s crazy cost effective - so cheap for what it is. And how could we forget that attack sound *chefs kiss*
Warrior priest should be in the list, think you probably forgot about it.
